This is an almost easy hike. Beware that there are no rails along the trail. Kids need to be definitely supervised very carefully. There are chances to see a few reptiles/critters along the path sometimes. The recommended time would be to reach the top during sunset before moonrise. One can see the whole picture unfold from there. It is easily crowded most times with casual regular hikers and tourists alike. There is no entrance fee. Remember to stay hydrated on this trail and wear proper hiking shoes along the way to ease the difficult even more. A sunscreen and a hat with an additional light (if staying until dark) wont hurt either. Remember that there are no restrooms on the trail. Dogs are also welcome on the path. One of the beautiful places and very close from the Phoenix Zoo.
It is a rare thing to talk about Hole in the Rock in the same breath as the other iconic landmarks of Arizona like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon. But I have to to say, Hole in the Rock has a certain undeniable charm, and it is a legit site and destination.Anyone but the most frail and the neonatal, can hike here. Just minutes from downtown Phoenix, this rock formation is easy to get to, easy to climb, and it is free!On the day I went, the moon, me, and the ceiling hole, located in the rear, were in rare cosmic alignment. Ancient people have used the hole to track the sun. For me, it wasnt meant to be.Once done with the hole, there are trails near by for hiking and biking. There is also a lake for fishing, as well as the zoo, and the gardens. Check this place out.
Nice late afternoon or evening getaway. Ample parking, dogs allowed miles of trails, and a popular sunset watching spot. On a typical evening you can get a beautiful view of the city with a gorgeous glowing sunset sky backdrop! We love visiting this area after long days. Of course, we typically avoid it during the hot summer months. You will not regret visiting this Phoenix jem thats in the heart of the city!
Visited there with my colleagues while we all came from NY office and stayed in Tempe for in-house training. It was moderate hiking to the top and view was awesome. You can also take a good picture of cactus.
The Phoenix park department has really cleaned up the area over the last few years. Now a beautiful place to visit and the climb around back to the top of the opening is easy to do. Great view of the Valley from there.
When I read the reviews I didnt really think its gonna be this beautiful as the elevation is not so much. But, the view from here is just amazing.
Super cool. Many hike trail choices or make your own. Great for families with small children and older ones too. Was with my college freshman son and we both had a great time.
A very short hike to the hole. Expect crowds during the sunset. Great place to see the sunset from. Youll not be amazed if you go any other time of the day.
It was a neat little place to go to! Plenty of free parking, which is great!! It’s a short climb up to the hole and you get a nice view from looking out either side of the hole. The rocks are HOT though, so beware!!
This was a really cool spot to visit by a water feature and the zoo.
Awesome place to take a walk, chill on the rock and watch the sunset. The hole in the rock is obviously a main attraction, but there is more to do around. You can find some lovely spots for pick-nick, relax by the water, ride a bike or hike to the pyramid tomb. Fantastic place to spend time with friend, family, walk your dog or read a book by yourself. Highly recommend to check this out.
It has a good view of the airport and the city of Phoenix and sunset, its easy to get to and parking is available. The hike itself is short but poorly maintained and not easy if you are unsteady or have a disability. There is no wheelchair access. The city or the state could do a better job of maintaining this part of Papago Park.
Really good short hike. Takes maybe five minutes to get from the parking area to the top. Small children should be fine on this hike. Great shade at the top and good view of the city.
Nice easy trails and pet-friendly. There was an abundance of wildlife on the day we visited including some very vocal songbirds and rather suspicious turtles...Hole on the Rock is very easy to find and there are ample parking places.Anyone with an interest in fishing should be pleased to note that there were several parties of people who picked this spot to cast their lines. Many photo opportunities, should one be so inclined.
Always a great place to visit. Great view anytime of day.
This is an easy hike that you can even take kids on! There is a great view as well as plenty of bike trails, picnic tables, and flora to look at! This is also an ideal spot to see the sunset and moon rise! You can even go down by the water and see ducks and geese! Its very peaceful here!
Fun place to scramble around on some cool rock formations and check out the sunset. Pro tip: go to the right and you can get up higher onto the roof of the space in the photo
Clouds had the sunset tonight, otherwise it would have been great!
Short hike, great for families. There is shade at the top so you can hike on any day.
It is just an incredible site to behold. The view from up to of the skyline of both Phoenix and Tempe is fantastic.
An awesome tourist attraction. And a go-to for many locals. Its an easy walk up to the hole. Youll see fantastic views of the city. Its also close to the zoo as well as the botanical gardens. There are many hiking paths all around.
This was the best part of our Phoenix adventure. Remarkably beautiful, and free! The trails provide Mountain View’s practically everywhere that you look. It is easier than you would think to climb around the back of the mountain and into the hole. There are stairs leading down into the hole. Once inside you are able to see the lake, Phoenix skyline, planes landing, and of course the mountain skyline. It is such a serene place. People are eager and more than happy to take photos for you and there are nice nooks in the rock to just sit and watch the airplanes. You can also see the governors tomb (pyramid), and the lake is quite pretty. Will definitely visit again. So beautiful.
Really cool stop! If you come to Phoenix area without coming here, well then now you have a reason to come back. Parking can be fussy. Get there far before sunset to get a good spot to park & sit, also plan on staying at least 20 minutes past sunset. Bring good shoes, water, small blanket to sit on. Look out for bats and slippery rocks.
A longtime, Phoenix institution.Very popular for hikes especially at sunset as it gives an unobstructed view all the way to South Mountain.During the summer it gets super hot like much of the area so bring water, wear sunscreen and watch for signs of dehydration.A truly unique gem in Phoenix. Take your visiting friends and family to show them what The Valley has to offer.
Fun quick hike up to the hole in the Rock. At sunset, it is super crowded!
Lovely trail very clean and suitable for young children and wheelchairs! Well-maintained path.... as you walking up you hear the natives singing their tribal songs.
Beautiful sunsets, lots of parking with a short hike to the top. Golden hour shots are great here.
Small little trail leading up to some big views. Perfect little spot to take kids to run around and even have a picnic. It wasn’t too busy when I went during the week. You can definitely get some solid pictures of the city and mountains in the distance. Also, being inside a giant whole inside a rock is a pretty neat experience. Once you’re inside the rock make sure to keep an eye on your kids since it is decently high up.
Great sunset view and enjoy the city lights after not difficult to get to small hike, but well worth it
Super cool place to take in the Phoenix areas scenery. Definitely a unique place to visit!
A must do when in Phoenix.. wear comfy sturdy shoes as lots of loose gravel... wear a hat, bring lots of water and a camera because you get some amazing photos. We parked on the road we didn’t find a lot of parking. Free to do and you get a great view of downtown
This place used to be a nice place to relax and take in the valley but now it seems full of instagrammers.
An easy walk with a slight incline. Prefect for the whole family! No wheelchair or stroller access. A beautiful view and a great place to cool off in the desert heat! Quite a bit of broken glass on the trail and in the cavern so appropriatly shoes are a must!
Fun location to hike and see the famous hole-in-the-rock here in Phoenix. Easy hike to the top, excellent views all around for photos, and free parking is welcome too!
This place is easy to find. Has a great history and wondeful view. Not a difficult hike unless it is very hot outside. Definitely a must see.
Very easy climb up. Restrooms are open.
If youre looking for a nice relaxing, serene place with just a little bit of company, this is the place to be. Centered in Papago Park, the Hole in the Rock is a jewel in the valley with several recreational hiking areas nearby, the botanical gardens, and the Phoenix zoo. Walk the trail, hike the very small mountain to get to the top (5-10 minutes), and look out onto the cities of Phoenix/Scottsdale.
Great spot to take out of town guests for a short hike with views of the entire valley ️
It’s exactly what’s it’s called and it’s awesome.
Really great hike and view at the end.
You can drive up to the rock and the hike is really easy. In about ten minutes, youll get a breath-taking view of the surroundings and the effort is certainly worth it. Do make a stop here!
Easy hike for amazing views. Rocks can be slippery so wear good shoes!
Very cool spot for an easy hike good for all ages. Great views of the city. The hike can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as 15. The skilled Can get to the top, but the main sight and location would be in the hole that they made easy for people of all ages to access.Theres also a cool duck pond, and zoo near by.Go at sunset or sunrise for special views :)
If i could rate this place i’d rate it a 0. My parents spent about $40.00 for my mom, dad, brother, sister and I when there was only about 7 different animals. Also, we went here thinking there’d be shade, for those animals in 100° weather but there was barley any shade there for those poor animals. To top it off, there was no water for any of the animals and if they was water it was all gone and in the sun! Same with the food, we would give them food and they would all be starving! No hate to this place but the animals should have full bowls of food and not have to rely on the costumers to pay for $5 buckets of food to give to the animals. Please if you visit this place and have a water bottle or any water on you give it to these animals they need it
A beautiful and easily accessible park. The hole in the rock is usually very busy, but is absolutely gorgeous for sunset. I recommend getting there a bit early in order to get a good spot
This is a little hike with great views. Lots of places to take pictures but it was pretty crowded. We took a toddler and my parents who are in their 60’s and the hike was no problem. We had to watch the toddler close because some areas were steep once we got to the top.
Pretty cool spot. Free to see and climb up. Family friendly. Not hard to get up I to the hike at all. My 2 year old walked up there herself.
We came here after visiting the botanical garden. It was a short hike up the hill. It was a nice view. There is also a little lake with some nice palm trees close by that we walked to after. Definitely added to our trip to the garden.
What a great experience. I was looking for something to see that would be out of the way and not super busy. And this was it. I got a nice hike, and amazing view and met a new friend. What more can you ask for.We spent some time at the top reflecting on the beauty and the grandeur of the valley before us.Take a few minutes out of the day and enjoy this gem.
This is one of the best climbing adventures. Its easy, not that hard to get up there! Once you get to the hole area then you could see Downtown Phoenix and Camelback Mountain. Its free for visiting, free parking, there are picnic area and restroom nearby.
Best time, a little hot but I went the best people in my life. I wouldnt want to share that experience with any one else.
Popular spot, with easy trail to hole. Other trails were a bit harder to find. Several picnic area throughout. Many wading birds and water fowl at the Oasis. No staff were observed during the visit.
Hole in the Rock is such u cute little gem unknown to many people. There are water patches surrounded by palms, also a small picnic area where you can sit and enjoy your snack or meal while having amazing view! Taking a short hike up you will reach a hole in a rock through which the view will leave you speachless! There are interesting rocks to be found if you like to collect them. You can simply just relax and suntan. I highly recommend driving to this place!
Really beautiful natural landmark, lots of great scenery. It’s an easy hike, but if you’re not used to the heat/blazing sun avoid in the summer. As a northerner, walking around Hole in Rock in August was brutal, with the 115 degree heat. Luckily, the actual hole in the rock was shady so I got a brief respite from the ungodly heat.
Great place to take out of town visitors. Fairly easy hike with great views all around. There is also a fishing pond nearby with ducks. Bring bread to feed them. The kiddos will love it!
Fun to hike! Nice view also
Nice spot to visit and fun to climb to the hole for view and photos. Active large bees in the area, so do be careful. The Path is not well marked and can be a little confusing as you are heading back down. Great place to view a sunrise or sunset. Unfortunately, some visitor left their garbage and some go there to smoke joints, otherwise I would have given a 5 star rating.
Was so glad we decided to check out the sunset. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minute prior to sunset. Lots of cars, & they lock the gate to get in right after sunset. It was an easy climb, we did it in flip flops. Took @ 5 minutes. Worth it!
Whether its 5 minutes or 5 hours time will pass quickly. This place is awesome. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Stroll by the lake, hike up a mountain, look at a monument, feed the ducks. Picnic tables with/without shelter, bathrooms and bbq pits are a hop skip and jump away.
Simple hike great evening view.
Easy hiking trail for everyone. Even those knee issues can slowly navigate through the natural trails. Bring your camera the sights are amazing.
We took the short hike up to the whole and enjoyed the views of Tempe and and Phoenix. Views from the hole were awesome. Very close to the airport if you are looking to fill some time. Plenty of places to sit down and have a picnic as well. Zoo is right next door as well.
Very easy, and very short trail. Definitely good for families with small children. We went on an early afternoon week day in hopes there wouldn’t be too many people about but we where wrong. Almost impossible to grab a decent photo up there due to the amount of bodies in the area.
Amazing park. I would recommend to anyone for sure.
Good place to bring your dogs and to just relax
Super gorgeous and worth visiting!! Since its so easily accessible compared to other nature destinations in the area, youll have all kinds of visitors. So...I guess be ready to hear some weird conversations as sound travels really far out on your walk there due to the holes shape. Would be 5 stars if there was a bit more seclusion involved, but thats not the holes fault.
I been going here since i moved in 2004. Its been a few years since going today. Geocacheing at Papago Park today.
Great place for families, bring the camera because you will take lots of photos. Theres picnic tables if you want to eat and enjoy the beautiful view ( yes you can bring your own food and a cooler) Plenty of hiking trails, the hole in the rock is AMAZING! I went with my family and took my kids ages 11, 8, 6, and 3 your children will love it. Bring water for sure. Parking is free and you can bring your dogs. Great even for a Sunday stroll theres also paved sidewalks if you have a baby in a stroller or a family member in a wheelchair they wont miss out on the beauty at all! Enjoy! (Youtube @momochronicles)
Easy to find. Short trail walk and easy for the whole family. Went there with my wife and 3yr old son and had no problem getting up to the top of the rock. He also loved looking at the ducks in the nearby ponds.
Love this place spectacular views for sunrise and sunset. Awesome place to come hang out and enjoy the time you have.
Easy hike, though climbing up to the hole itself can be a slight challenge for very young children and elderly adults. Plan to arrive early for the sunset as it gets crowded quickly. Amazing view of downtown Phoenix with the sun setting directly behind.
Very easy walk up the hill I took my 3 kids with me, 5,3 and 2 yr old up there and they loved it! Theres some great views up there. I went on a Sunday and it was extremely busy so I would suggest going a different day maybe during the week. Its also right next to the Phoenix zoo. Theres tons of parking. And ponds all around. All in all its great and def recommend!
Absolutely great view from the top! I recommend going in the evening time!
Gorgeous views often require longer hikes. Parking was located just a short 5 minute walk to the hole in the rock. The surrounding park is a beautiful garden with trails, picnic areas and a botanical garden. Perfect place to enjoy a sunset. When we went, it said that the park closes at 7. We arrived at 6:55, drove in, hiked to the hole, enjoyed a bit of time with some photos and were back in our cars heading out around 7:20.The gates to enter closed at 7 and as long as you got in before then, there was no one there rushing people out of the park.
First time here, stopped by on a cycling outing. Very pretty in the morning
So much fun! I was in Phoenix for a work conference, and last minute, my team decided to go see the hole. Me and the other two girls I was with were in heels!!! But we still made it up and down alive - so the hike up isnt too bad at all. View was worth it, loved the view post-sunset with all the city lights too
Wonderful spot for the family to explore and enjoy the beautiful view. Brought our twins when they were 3, 4, and 6(this year). Climbing getting easier for them, and much more fun for us as family! Remember to bring some bread for the ducks when you check out the pond area (and some snacks for the family to enjoy at the picnic table)! Overall, this is an easy and relaxing 2 hours + outdoor activities option.
I climb all over it and its a great place to find spots to chill and u get to fond animals there.
A must visit of you dont have much time. A bit crowded but was a perfect day out
This is a must see! Its free and you get an awesome view. Park on paved road and take a 5-10 minute walk to to see the view. There are stairs and youll be walking at an incline. Recommended for anyone who can walk up hill. Leave the stroller in the car. Bring water, youll want a drink when you get to the top. Have fun! Take lots of pics!
Very easy hike up, a thought it gets more vertical and difficult while actually on the rock. Great photo opportunity! Be careful if it is wet. There are plenty of paved trails surrounding the area and there is a lot of parking.
It is a great spot to watch the sunset with a beautiful view of Phoenix. It does get really busy so get there a bit early to have a nice spot. Very easy walk up. If you are a bit more adventurous you can climb up on top of the rock as well.
Excellent place to just sit and observe the landscape. Relatively easy hike (short and few difficult inclines). Be careful on the steps. The only detriment was the amount of trash. Appalling how many bottles and other trash there were.
Nice for a quick stop. Right by the Desert Botanic Garden.
Such a beautiful place to visit! Its a great hike with kids too.
Awesome ♡ hike
Cool experience
Really cool to see a must visit!
Such a beautiful park, amazing views, amazing landscape, beautiful water, great fishing Horseshoe pits, grills, gazebo, working drinking fountains, easy access free great parking, you can also take trails all through the hills, theyre all so beautiful, very well maintained, you can also see the back side of the zoo with the big horn cheap, which is pretty amazing.hole in the Rock is a beautiful place, definitely experience for anyone to enjoy
I walked to Hole in the Rock from the Botanical Gardens. It is an easy/moderate walk to the Hole. Definitely suitable for all ages! It is a great place to have a walk and get a cool picture!
