This is such a beautiful hike. The view as you go up becomes more and more beautiful. I personally do it at night most of the time because I get off work at 5 so by the time I get there its already dark. The moon and city light do a great job at illuminating the trail so Ive never used a light. I do however appreciate the people that use red lights... Because LED blue and white lights are just so strong to the eyes specially when a lot of people arent using lights.
I came here for sunrise.I had no idea what I was getting myself into.I just parked in the first lot and climbed a small mountain nearby. As the sun rose, I became aware of another mountain nearby, I could see little dots moving, I then realized those were people and if I was this close I couldn’t leave without climbing that giant double diamond rated mountain(didn’t know that till I got there). The police academy was training and they were suppose to make it in 35 minutes!I gave it my best shot, took a few breaks and made it to the top of the mountain. It was glorious. Here are a few photos.Follow me on Instagram to see more @CTSNature
Go straight East on Northern until you cant go any further. Do you have one of the following: wheelchair, horse, street bicycle, mountain bike, skate board, or feet? Then you can enjoy BEAUTIFUL nature at this place.
Ive been hiking here for nearly 20 years and am still fascinated by it. We are so lucky to have this marvelous park right in the middle of our big city. There are so many trail options that I can adjust my hike to what I want to do. The desert terrain and flora is beautiful and you can access it from so many trailheads. Thank you to the foresight someone had to preserve this area many years ago. I do suggest you print out a map if youre not used to hiking as it can be easy to get a little turned around. Also, I usually access this park from the north side.
Great hike, so many places to explore, always a new trail to take. It is a spacious beautiful desert preserve in the middle of Phoenix that everyone should check often. Bikes hikes and horses welcome. Bring water.
Excellent park for hiking and running. It’s being renovated in 2019-20 so the improvements make it even better. From May-October: be careful! Bring far more water than you think you need. It can get very hot very quickly and people every year require rescues/medical attention. If you’re not from Arizona or another very hot climate, this tip is for you.
Nice easy to moderate hike to enjoy the great dessert landscape views and get some fresh air.
This was a nice short intense hike for about 3 ish miles. You can finish in an hour or less if youre quick
Great hiking trails from easy to moderate to hard. There is something for everyone.
I love hiking this area! We hiked from the Sutro Baths to the GGB and it was a great day! We explored downhills and had to go back uphill but the lookouts, old navy bunkers and views made it all worth it. I highly recommend at least several hours for this hike and taking public transportation or Uber back so you can go as far as possible without turning back and hiking the same trail. Bring water!
Enjoy hiking the breathtaking trails and scenic mountains. Great workout while enjoying one of the best features of Phoenix!
I’m an AZ native and love the trails in this mountain preserve more than Camelback Mountain. The views are absolutely stunning. The Summit trail is a very difficult trail and most popular so if you’re looking for a great workout, I would do the Summit. There are also many other trails that accommodate all levels and lengths you want to do.
Great place to take a hike and see Phoenix in the valley below.
A very nice walk in the middle of the rocky mountain preserve in Central part of Phoenix Lots of people were out.
Great hiking trails. It was very clean and I saw no trash along any parts of my hike. Very busy place. Parking was very limited due to construction. Thats the only reason I didnt give 5 stars. I had to part by exit of park and walk in.
Love being out on the trails in Phoenix Mountains Preserve! Nature is a Healer and I always love seeing who of Natures Relations is out to greet me!
Great mid-level trail. Dog friendly.
Phoenix Mountain Preserve has a wide variety of hiking trails for beginners to advanced. Trail 302 covers the base circumference of Piestewa Peak, then connects to Trail 300, about a 4 mile trek. You decide how far you want to venture.
Great place for a hike or family gathering. The facilities include benches, picnic tables and restrooms. Very clean. Restoration or construction is happening at one of the spots and that does not interfere with daily activities at the park.
Hiking season is upon us and this has the some of the best views of the whole valley!
Amazing views! That was truly awesome! Go there at night for a night sky with a view of all of the valley.
This is a great place to hike. Lots of different trails you can take depending on the level of difficulty you want for that day. The parking is not great so be prepared for that. There are a few lots are, but they are pretty small and fill up very quickly. The route to the peak is heavily trafficked but it is worth it. There are plenty of other trails in this area with much less people if that’s what you prefer. We really enjoyed our time hiking around this beautiful area.
Unfortunately the bathrooms are a toxic waste hazard and it is really busy, even during the middle of a workday.LOTS of mountain bikers who, while riding fast, are courteous. Lots of dogs and friendly people, even people riding horses. There is lots of parking (including horse trailer) and the trails are AWESOME, really rather easy footing with occasional hard inclines and a little hand over hand climbing. If you hike for about an hour you can get some absolutely AMAZING sunset shots.
Plenty of trails, room, views. Perfect Phoenix fall weather, free, great day !!
Beautiful urban mountain park. This is one of the reasons why Phoenix is a great place to live.
One of my favorite hikes in the valley. Drive through the gate and find various parking areas on both sides of the road. Near the back a makeshift helo landing zone is marked out. More parking loops this area. I prefer the hills to the south of the roadway. Not as intense of a hike but far less foot traffic and dogs are allowed on the trails to the right of roadway. These trails vary and have multiple jump off points so you choose the length of desired hike. When reaching any of the peaks beautiful views will be found of green golf courses, downtown skyline, east valley including Camelback mountain. Temples skyline can be made out also. Make sure to bring a camera to capture the views!
I love it there! Been doing there since I was a child and it never gets old!! Met a lot of really great people there. Praise God!!!
What an amazing hike! It was beautiful! Recommend going super early before sunrise as it gets really hot later in the morning. This to me was a bit more than moderate but worth every step!
Well maintained and marked trails. Open to everyone with designated parking in various neighborhoods.
Hiked at 40th St TH. Great conditioning hike. Nice people and dogs.
One of the toughest hike trail inside the city. I have made within 46 mins without proper rest. If you are a beginner then be sure about the challenge you gonna get. Its worth it when you made to the top. Go early as possible and enjoy.
It was good first time hiking in the longest time. My little sisters loved it. My daughter didnt like it at first but seemed to enjoy it in the end.
So many trails to explore from here! There is plenty of parking, but it gets busy so be prepared to wait for a spot or park up elsewhere.
Only visit if you enjoy nature please
Amazing hike but not dog friendly
One of my all time favorite hikes. Its a steep climb to the top, but the view is totally worth it! You get a perfect panoramic view of the Phoenix area. You will want to be in a moderate health condition to hike this, but if you take your time, youll be fine.
Lots of clean trails! Nice people as well that respect safe distance and wears masks.
Great easy trails to take the dog, or your kids! A little busy though...
My favorite park in all of Maricopa county. Endless beauty and different views every day !! This is my peace on earth... love hiking
A bit of a busy place, but for good reason!
It was wonderful! The cacti were blooming, the birds were chirping and the rain was falling. What a glorious day!I was fortunate to come across a Western Diamond back rattle snake.
Ive been hiking the summit trail for years, and I love it. Its been getting pretty congested though...
Nice hiking trails and scenic views. Good place to get away from people without being too far away from everyone. Biggest issue is a lack of parking spaces to accommodate guests.
Great place to visit, you can enjoy sleeping Phoenix city on beautiful Sunday morning with cold breeze kissing your sweating cheeks.
Its a great place to just go and clear your thoughts. You can also challenge yourself as well. I bring my dog when I visit the preserves so I cant test my ultimate limits but thats ok. There are plenty of other challenges besides going straight up. Climb high enough and you could see for miles in either direction, when the air is clean in particular. Wish I could go more often but Im on disability and cant afford the proper boots. You will eat up a pair of cheap boots in no time on these rocks. Anyways, Happy Hiking Everyone. Dont forget to bring plenty of water.
Perfect hike! Beautiful views, challenging, but not crazy hard. Get there early though, the parking lot is tiny.
Hot, but witha nice breeze blowing. Bring plenty of H2O.
Loved the hiking trails, especially in the winter when you don’t have to battle the heat. The trail is slightly difficult, but the view you get at the end of the trail is worth it. Make sure to bring plenty of water and drink it sparingly on your way!
Absolutely awesome place to get out and hike! Its very unpopulated compared to the other parks around and it makes for a great place to escape in the middle of the valley. Be sure and check this location out, bring lots of water because there are no water fountains anywhere.
It’s got parking & waterless toilets. The path is pretty rocky so wear proper shoes. In some cases the amount of gravel is ridiculous. Other than that, it’s got amazing views of the entire valley metro.
Well maintained and fun to hike. We went on Saturday around noon and parking was hard to find. I suggest finding a nearby side street (without a no parking sign) if you cannot find a place to park.
This place is a great hike, so peaceful!
I was a fan of dreamy draw park until I returned to my car on a Sunday to find my passenger side window busted out. Beware I had nothing in plain site no purse no personal items now I have to go elsewhere
I love hiking here, its a very well maintained area with trails varying in difficulty, decent bathrooms, & nice picknick areas.
Good hiking at Dreamy Draw recreation area during weekday. Several trails here, easy to moderately difficult. Expect washes, loose rock & gravel, no paved trails. A few mountain bikes, mostly family hikers, many with dogs. No powered vehicles. Nice concrete parking area. Restrooms typical of public park but well maintained. Can become congested during peak hours on weekends.
I do enjoy the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Place offers a lot of trails and many different starting points oh, so you dont have to take the same Trail every time. Do not forget the sunblock or water when coming out here. There is no Verandas or other amenities when on the trail. The area is almost always clean, the only places that get a little bit trashy is right by the highway.
A sweet escape from the city. You enter that valley and feel like you’re a hundred miles away. Beautiful!
Beautiful views and a lot of different trails to take.
I had so much fun at this place. I would give a disclaimer to wear GOOD shoes and pay attention! I took my kiddos here for spring break and the weather was cooperative. Nice outing.
Love this place. Many hiking areas. Restrooms. Usually good people.
Hiked Piewsta peak and it was fun. Good workout. The peak is nice but sketchy coming down. It took us two hours to go up and back but if you’re less experienced it might take you longer or you might turn back halfway. The hike is very strenuous. I run a few miles a day and I was wiped by the end of it. Make sure to take water. Views are great.
I love Piestewa mountain!!
Is so beautiful. Night hike is definitely worth it. You can actually enjoy the view and the peace at night is just amazing. You can appreciate the silence.
The is where I go to find peace.
The couple of smaller peaks next to Piestewa are great for a couple of reasons. They have multiple routes to the top...steadier and steeper inclines. People will feel the challenge, but also, most anyone can make it to the peaks! Beautiful views, and friendly hikers. The parking on 32nd St and Lincoln is very tiny! If you go in the morning, go early! Otherwise youll be waiting in a line of cars to park.
Absolutely beautiful outdoors area. Gates Pass here has perhaps the best sunsets Ive seen across this planet. Close views of the mountains and across the huge valley (where the sun sets). Great hiking trails. Good facilities as well, with parking and washrooms. All this just a few minutes drive outside Tucson.
So easy to hike. Its so beautiful here.
1st time here and didnt realize what a gem this place is. Beautiful views and really easy trails. This place also has bike routes
Hiked the summit trail (300) this is a challenging and steep hike. Lots of rock face and steep drop offs. The reward is a beautiful view and a short rest before heading down. This trail is narrow at points so choose rest points wisely (benches at various spots) so not to create choke points for runners.Recommend this trail enthusiastically, great in city hike....
I’m a novice hiker and tbh I’m a smoker so this kicked my butt to say the least. I wanted to quit but thank my lucky stars I didn’t. Look at the view. And my camera captured a unidentifiable figure going into the clouds. It was busier when we started but quickly vacated once night came. I’m still feeling it a day later but would do it again just for this insane breathtaking view of an amazing city!
Amazing hike. The best in Phoenix
Hot today but the views from the highest points are lovely. Is hard to believe we are in the middle of the city!
Mr.Peaznutz first mountian hike with Raul Miss Sophie and me
Its a short hike so the climbing is the challenge. The top has a great view in 360°. There are plenty of steps over 18 inches. There are mainly jagged rocks at the top and most of the trail. If you want to sit for a while take a small pad or just take off your shoes and sit on those. Make sure to take water and some food or snacks.
Loved it. The views are amazing! Fair warning: the intensity level is extreme.
Great options for different trails. Kid-friendly trails as well.
Amazing place. No entrance fee. Drink water. Good facilities.
Beautiful, quiet place to relax and clear your mind!
Really enjoyed the hike here with my wife and our dog. Make sure you have good socks though as it is hiking. Haha. My poor wife got a blister as her socks were too thin. Really good trails but make sure you have enough water.
Awesome peaceful easy to moderate hikes.
Great spot for hiking, you can do whatever you feel like, from 30 min to hours of hiking, beautiful cactuses, some kinds I havent seen before!
Great hike for us that arent quite ready for the peak!
Piestawa is a killer hike! Hitting the summit is quite the leg workout. Its like melted stairs the whole way up! Amazing views up top and lots of rock climbing opportunities. Theres lots of beautiful rock structures. We also found 2 chuckwallas!
Freedom trail is a great loop hike. Moderate intensity. Moderately trafficked and well marked throughout. Beautiful views.
Beautiful scenery. Great hiking. Trails for beginners and experts.
One of the best places to hike in Phx....
It was a bit muggy but cool.
Notice the signsI was on 302 and circled the mountain for about 5 miles. Gorgeous lots of places to stop and enjoy the view. Great workout
Beautiful! My God is Amazing n made it so stunning
Visiting from California and wanted to do someHiking. We found this trail and it looked the perfect hike for our first day here.We left from the trailhead and there are so many ways to get through this area. Trails everywhere. We took a trail that led us to Voaz where we did a loo up and over the top of a mountain before heading back to the start. It was the perfect length. 4 miles with 1,000 feet of elevation change.Be sure to wear good shoes. It’s rocky. Be sure to bring plenty of water. You’re in full sun exposure all day. We went through 2+ liters each. All in all a great trail. Lots of things to do here in this preserve. Hiking, running and mountain biking. The trails and pretty well trafficked. We crossed paths with many hikers today. I would rate this trail as a solid moderate.
So peaceful, no homeless that I saw
Fun hiking, good views
This is a wonderful hike And wonderful walk if you have kids. The trails are perfect and the scenery is amazing. I highly recommend
The sunsets and sunrise are beholding to be still and wait for the colors of the sky to inspire and rest in.
