Extremely old and historical cemetery right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Old Town San Diego. Simply amazing to walk around and pay your respects to some of the founding ancestors of the city. A must see if you are in Old Town San Diego. We have a full review on our blog site and YouTube channel for this cemetery.
Cemetery of El Campo Santo is a small burial ground and historical landmark established in 1849, with interpretive signs. This cemetery is rumored to be the nexus for a surprising amount of spiritual activity ranging from cold spots and misty figures to floating torsos of spirits and vanishing spectral people. A lot of spiritual activity is said to occur here. One possible spirit is Yankee Jim Robinson, a man who stole San Diegos only row boat, and was hung at the nearby Whaley House. Afterwards he was buried in this cemetery. If you walk just outside El Campo Santos front gate, there are small brass circles that say “Grave Site” embedded in the concrete sidewalk. Only one guy, a state Assembly member, was exhumed and re-buried within the cemeterys new boundaries. The other graves are known to exist thanks to ground-penetrating radar.
This was pretty nice because its so old. Nice history!
A fantastic site, full of history (happy and horrid). The research that has gone into the excavation and mapping of the site is amazing. Today confined, you can find on the street just beyond its limits are small bronze plaques that mark additional grave sites.
Its nice to stroll thru and read about some of the history of Old Town.
I would like to go back, considering it to be home.
I live down the street and always like to kick it with my friend Jesus at the entrance he was just like me, a drunk!! Haha my place 4 peace!!!
If you go it, there are some stories noted among the tombstones. Not sure if the gates close, but it was open in the evening after the gift shops on the street were closed.
Interesting old cemetery but not something you should make a Trip for.
