The Saco Heath is an amazing little Microcosm! Its both a Blueberry and Cranberry Bog. The trail is easy and well groomed with a lot of wooden walkways. It varies from a nice darker Forest to an open Bog. When you get to the Bog walkway there are two benches you can sit on to enjoy the surreal environment. I saw Crows and a pair of Falcons. I heard a robin in the distance and a few sparrows. I was surprised at how quiet it was. Once across the bog you can take a short LOOP trail where its a bit less groomed. (trip roots) Along the way you can stop at a nice outer bench overlooking an untouched area thats a bit wilder. I believe I saw the Lorax and definitely heard him mumbling about the traffic noise. There are tons of different kinds of plants, bushes, and trees. Everyone I met was polite and I even snapped a photo of the nicest ones. ;) A unique area to visit for sure!
This is a really fun, well maintained trail in Saco. Nice for an fun walk (not a hiking trail). The walk would take about an hour and fifteen minutes max to do the whole route. The scenery is unique and beautiful, and I would definitely recommend visiting.A few other things to be aware of:1. Its free!2. It is open in the winter (and maintained decently, but be aware of ice).3. Its open dawn to dusk.4. The walkway is narrow so you have to be careful when people are walking the other direction.
Been wanting to check this place out for a while, finally got to with my family. It was really cool to walk down the boardwalk, the only wildlife we saw were red squirrels but thats to be expected because of how busy it gets in the afternoons. A good place for families with young kids to enjoy a little bit of nature!
This is a wonderful place to bring the kiddos for a great walk. Various seats available for resting & bird watching or a light snack. Lovely hidden gem.
We found this place for the first time last summer and look forward to visiting again. The paths are very well maintained, but definitely bring a hat and sunscreen as some sections of the trail are very exposed. Our 3 year old loved it, but was a bit too young to do the entire trail without needing to be carried some of the way. Older kids will have no problems.
Awesome place to walk and enjoy a different habitat. The boardwalk is a fantastic way to see the heath - its level and provides access to different areas without having people wander off into fragile areas.Highly recommended, and am looking forward to sharing it with visitors to our area.
I love the preserve...that’s why I was bummed to learn it’s CLOSED due to COVID-19 as of right now.
Unique walk, serenaded by a birds and surrounded by wild blueberries and plant species and a stop at the historic way way store after
Nice mix of familiar forest and unusual Heath.
Great short easy walk, with tons to offer!
Nice walk/ view.
Our family loves this trail! Please note you cannot bring your dogs, and it is super narrow for baby strollers. But it is a super easy and quite beautiful walk.
Very much enjoy the trail here. It has a great view and something new catches your eye each visit. Blueberry bushes along the trail as well make the hike more than worth it!
Nice place for a walk on a snowy day
Beautiful landscape with a long boardwalk bringing you through multiple mini biomes. Keep your eyes open for the carnivorous plants (seriously, they have some). If you go in the summer or spring, bring a TON of bug spray though. Mosquito heaven.
Outstanding trail, walk over a bog. The boardwalk keeps you save and dry.
Very scenic. Best Heath in Maine.
Beautiful area with very well laid out trail and rest areas.
A beautiful and natural Preserve. Pathways allow for a hiking and just taking in the natural beauty of the place.
Very nice walk path. Perfect day for it. No bugs and perfect temp.
Very peaceful. Love it here
Really awesome place for a nice short walk
A great contrast of shady woodlands and open heath - which seems simultaneously desolate and lush. Very unique landscape. Bring a hat or sunscreen for the boardwalk across the heath - or come when it isnt too sunny. This area is well maintained, and gorgeous. An easy walk and a must-see for nature lovers. Free trail, but I would have happily paid a fee - well worth your time.
Lovely little walkabout. Been here several times during different seasons. Love the bog and trees/shrubs sprouting out of it. The wooden boardwalk is nice. If you are in the area, I recommend.
This is a hidden gem. A leisurely walk through the pine forest to boardwalk in a large big.
Cloudy and overcast, but still a great walk. Nice boardwalk. Very quiet walk.
Very pretty and unique ecosystem. The trail is predominately a four foot wide ponchoen or boardwalk suspended on a bog.
Beautiful setting, quiet, just a great place to visit, walk, and commune with nature.
The trail needs a little work. How can we help with that?
Its a lovely place to go on a walk but if you have a stroller, beware that the loop trail is NOT a good idea! I had to basically carry the stroller with my baby in it. So you can take your baby on the boardwalk but you gotta walk all the way back to the entrance. They should have some more discriptive maps or pamphlets about the area. Otherwise, its a nice place to explore.
Highly recommend visiting if you dont mind a little walking
Me and my autistic Grandson love this place what a beautiful place to visit
Great place for a quick, scenic walk. Not a ton of parking, but its not usually that crowded, so likely to get a spot.
Beautiful area, it feels as though youre entering Area X when you get to the bog and marshland. Its easy to navigate and trail is marked so its accessible. I cant wait to return when theres less snow.
You just have to go see it for yourself, explore nature!
Great little walk, awesome veiw but careful pulling in, big bump
This is a hidden-gem to be sure. Went here with my partner and we had the most wonderful. Few other methods by which to see bogs in Southern Maine.
I love this place. Beautiful all year long, though you might have some trouble getting around in the dead of winter. Very peaceful and relaxing. A real gem.
Very nice walk through the Marsh/Woods.Shaded. Its really clean.
Good easy walk a bit muddy in places.
Quiet peaceful place
Very interesting and unique. So few left anywhere, you feel so connected.
No dogs allowed. But poorly behaved children and adults who throw trash in the woods are. Excellent.
Great place to walk and enjoy nature
Nice brisk walk
Good nature walk.
Beautiful yet very buggy
I love the tall trees that open to the heath. It looks like they recently updated the path. Nice 2 mile walk!
Great spot for a quiet walk.
Very beautiful place!! Well kept and clean! ️
Beautiful and accessible!!
Great place to take a short hike. Beautiful.
It was a great walk through woods and over a bog on a boards. Really fun.
Great walk
Beautiful as always, even this time of year. :-) a little bit icy in the shady areas.
Beautiful. Def worth a visit
A dramatic transition from a dense, suburban rural highway into a quiet and vast natural wetland.
Local and beautiful
Unique wildlife. Keep maine pretty!
Fantastic place for a long walk
Nice relaxing walk around a bog:-)
The boardwalks are an easy walk.
Beautiful! May not want to bring a stroller, the pathways are just wide enough but it can get awkward if someone needs to get by
