Awesome that we got to go to this place. Unfortunately it was not open due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So we could not go inside. The outside however was fascinating. However 1 block away from it in almost any direction except for the Liberty Bell exhibit, was typical of most inner city neighborhoods in the City of Philadelphia (thats all Im saying about that).

Visiting the Poe museum was great! There are two staff members there who are extremely kind and helpful. You knock once to gain entrance (recall a certain poem?). There is an option to watch a 8 minute video on his life. The film is very informative. The house has several rooms, the steps are steep so I recommend wearing flats. There is a cute little gift shop. I purchased a bookmark. Overall wonderful experience. Oh and admission is free.

Empty rooms. No authentic artifacts. An 8 minute video is all that gave us a sense of Poe. Steve, a knowledgeable park ranger, filled in the blanks with research about Poe, his writing and his life. Steve’s effort was Herculean and we enjoyed our time thinking about this great American writer in the Reading Room. But shame on the National Park Service for not creating a better display that tells the story of Poe in Philadelphia. Find this gem of a monument and support vital part of our American history: it’s literary giants.

The tour guide gave my students an excellent tour and I received a teacher discount. There was a 90 mins tour, plus documentary. You have to book this ahead of time, but booking is easy, via email on the website. This is a great place to take your students, or just to visit. Parking was easy. My students and I really enjoyed ourselves.

The Edgar Allan Poe house is a unique experience. This is quite a small site, and not very accessible due to the age of the building. It is interesting to hear of a chapter of Poes life, however the interior is fairly bare. I believe this is part of the narrative of the history of the site. The National Parks staff and guild were very nice and informative.

Very informative about the life of one of Americas greatest literary figures. Theres a short self-guided tour of the house and yard, and small exhibit area.Went on a Sunday morning and were the only visitors there, so if you are one to ask a lot of questions to the rangers its very nice to get their full attention.Deducted a star for a combination of the following: (i) rooms are unfurnished -- would be nice to see furnishings representative of the period, (ii) in the rooms there werent formal exhibits but just a bunch of papers in individual plastic sheaths left loose on closet shelves, and (iii) no dedicated parking lot -- only street parking in a somewhat shady area. Still well worth a visit.

I came here thinking It was going to be a quick pop in but I was wrong. I spent a good amount of time reading and learning about Poes life in PA. Theres no fee to enter in and there are 3 levels of the house (including cellar) to explore. The people curating the house were so nice and encouraging of us looking all around. they have a little section to buy gifts. The tour of the house is self guided and a nice place for kiddos who may want to wander to have a go. They have signs posted around with info of those who lived with him and pictures of how it looked when it was inhabited.

Aside from your interest in his literary works, there is not much at this site for a visit in my opinion. Most of his house and attached neighbors house is empty with a scene on tapestry draped in a room to make 1 wall not empty and broken. You can be done in 15 minutes. Actually a shame that the building seems to not be taken care of at all on the outside. Grass is not mowed and the shutters are eaten and falling apart. There is historical leave it be and then just common house maintenance.

Im into the history of a place and hey, if its a bit on the macob side thats all the better so the Edgar Allen Poe House was definitely worth the trip. Seeing how I enjoy the odd and unusual, I thought I knew pretty much all there was too know about good ol Edgar but no... I was pleasantly surprised to learn a few things about the time he spent living in Philadelphia that I did not know until reading the brochure. I also found it amusing that something was trying to make a home in the mouth of the statue of The Raven located in the side garden of the house so it looks as if there is something hanging out of its mouth and only adds to the eerieness thinking, Hhmmm...wonder if thats a noodle from some Chinese takeout leftovers or some spaghetti from a big Italian Sunday dinner? LoL its a great location in a good neighborhood and easy to get to.. especially with the giant wall mural on the building next door. Next time I plan to go during its atour hours and maybe Ill get to learn more about the man who put the madness he suffered from into words so we too could experience just a tiny bit of the thoughts and fears that tormented him until his death...RIP Edgar

Diamond in the rough. The only bad thing about this place is the hours - only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as of 8/2019. Free admission. Several exhibits about Poe and a short biographical video. Self guided walking tour of one of the homes the Poes family lived in whike in Philadelphia. The park rangers are the real gem - they are able to add exquisite detail about Poes life both while living in the house as well as in general. There is a reading room with a collection of all of Poes works as well as stories on CD that is open for public use. Sit for a while and connect with the surroundings! Worth the stop if youre nearby - not enough to warrant a trip to Philadelphia.

I cant believe I never went here when I lived in Philly... then again I dont think I read Poe until I wasnt living in Philly anymore. Go figure. Now that Im a high school English teacher, I read his pieces & teach several of them. I find his poetry & several of his short stories to be VERY teachable. So Im really glad I got to visit the Poe House on my recent trip to Philly. Its small, but theres so much great info, the guides are very nice & helpful, and I just love the history of the place. It seems that if youre lucky, you might be regaled with a story from one of the guides (we were lucky enough to hear a summary of & talk a bit about The Black Cat while in the basement! Spooky! Haha).I love the gift shop too. Just an overall cool experience!

This was a really special visit! You start your visit by knocking with an actual knocker, which kind of sets the tone for the whole visit. The entire tour did not take us very long - Poe didnt live at this house for very long, but its thought that many of his major works were begun there. Being a National Parks site, the rangers are more than happy to answer your questions and direct you. Their love for this site is apparent. What little information they do know is on full display, along with relevant newspaper clippings from the time period discussing Poes life and contemporaries.Access-wise, its not great. The stairs are very narrow and steep. Theres not a huge amount of information in the upstairs rooms, but it is still pretty cool to go up there - you may want to call ahead and make sure you have a plan for your mobility aid if you want to visit.Overall, this is an excellent visit! Its within walking distance of some of the other major National Parks sites; its worth the time of the walk.

Interesting, while rather small, national historical site, being one of the few remaining residences of the great 19th century writer Edgar Allen Poe. Not much of the house is actually remaining, most of the furniture and interior decorations of the original house are gone, and are replaced by rather antiquated and hard-to-read National Park Service signs that are at best relevant. You can visit what most likely was his room, his study, his beloved basement of horror and intrigue that looks like a haunted attic (and smells like one, too). The best part of the house is the Poe Reading Room, a room built from Poes description of a good room and equipped with period furnishings, a complete audio set of Poes works, and various period books, including Longfellow and Scott. Is worth the trip as you will never see something like this again in your life, but is not the most intriguing or entertaining museum, and perhaps could need an update.
