Very nice reserve, open marshland with varying wildlife depending on the time of year and weather. Has over a mile long boardwalk out over the river and marshlands, great for exercise!Costs 3 dollars for 4 adults to enter which is super reasonable. You need to grab an entry paper and put the money in a blue envelope near the visitor center, tear off the bottom of the entry paper and keep it with you, then drop the envelope into the little bin nearby.
Lovely. Wish there was someone there to enforce masks, but most people wore them in passing. People are usually fairly quiet and respectful to the wildlife and you can see seals sleeping. :) its a lovely walk and a but longer than youd probably expect. I wish they had restrooms closer to the boardwalk area! Its only a $3 entrance too!
Great experience! Lots of birds...kind of busy on Saturday. Easy access to highway. Bring hand sanitizer...porta potty available.
Boardwalks and trails let you see lots of birds and scenery. Very flat for easy walking
Amazing views and like a Wheres Waldo of local wildlife! Boardwalks that walk through the trees and marsh land and then a huge boardwalk that goes out deep into the tideflats where the mcallister and Nisqually river meet the Puget sound! Many different birds, some otters, seals and even frogs were seen in just one day! Had a blast taking our kid, and he loved it too!
Truly enjoyed my visit very beautiful and was super enjoyable. They only part I was disappointed is that they had the last part of the walk closed because its seasonal.
The Nisqially Wildlife Refuge is always a joy to behold. The beauty of the environment in transition from ocean to wet to dry lands coming in at the southern edge of the Peugeot Sound is nothing short of breathtaking in the right light. Also, dont forget to walk the wooden paths and trails at the refuge to get a great up close and personal experience with the environment and local critters!
Absolutely beautiful place! Wish had a full day to walk the full boardwalk
We will definitely come back. A place to calm my mind listening-to the sounds of the nature. Amazing creations that God created for us to love. And thank you to all the Staffs who created the boardwalks beautifully and maintaining the place. Thank you
Had a great 4 mile walk (2 miles out and two back) to the observation pavilion at the end of the boardwalk (Puget Sound overlook). There are benches along the way and plenty of scenery to observe -- birds, landscape, water and foliage. As the tide wandered in, it was cool to witness a change in the waterscape. And, unexpectedly fun was the change in the weather as I walked (2 rain squalls blew in and out).
What a delightful day to be outside. The views were spectacular. So many birds to see. The fall colors gorgeous. Get out and support your parks.
This is my dream place and Im so lucky to live just 5 minutes away. A beautiful landscape of forest and wetland, with boardwalks running through both. I never fail to see new wildlife when I go. Perfect place for little ones to discover and play. Bring binoculars and a camera and youll certainly find something you can treasure for years to come. There is a visitors center (closed for COVID) that has a great selection of informative books and fun trinkets for the kids.
Wonderful bird sanctuary with over a mile of boardwalk and another two or so miles of trails. You start in the woods and make your way out to the river and tidal flats. Limited parking is the main problem. Great for families and friendly for strollers or wheelchairs.
What a beautiful place. Full of interesting things to see. The walkways and boardwalk make it an easy hike out to the end of the boardwalk. Plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
It’s not difficult to find what is special here. It’s wildlife .There are 3 kind of areas here, wetlands, grasslands, and fresh water area. In each area, you can find different wildlife. In my first visit, I found three coyotes in the grassland. Unfortunately I haven’t taken a good picture.I like to walk here, to explore the wildlife and feel the wild style.
This is a great outing for all ages. People are very considerate and plenty of social distancing and mask wearing.
Beautiful place. Lots to see. Easy to walk and social distance. Enjoy nature close to Tacoma and Olympia
Ive loved walking here for 25 years. Still beautiful, still peaceful. Less people in the early morning but plenty of space on the gravel paths as opposed to the boardwalks for physical distancing.
Beautiful refuge filled with so much wildlife to observe and enjoy! Very well maintained and lush! The trails are super kid-friendly if you have kiddos that have lots of energy and endurance. We logged around 14,000 steps. We saw a mink, blue herons, ducks, geese, birds, seals, otters, sandpipers, eagles, frogs, 2 little snakes and so much more! It was amazing and most said it was an “off” day, that there’s normally so many more animals. With that said, bring your GOOD camera and binoculars! There are free viewing binocs at several locations but it’s nice to have your own. There are also some beautiful barns and that’s where you can find a set of port-a-potties for your convenience. Fantastic spot for adventure!
Beautiful place to go walking alone. You feel really safe as a female walking alone. Everyone is friendly and enjoying their time.
$3 for up to four adults (16 and older) is a great deal for a beautiful place to visit! Under 16 years old enter free. You can get to the visitor center right off of the interstate. the walking path is far enough away that you dont hear the interstate. However you can see it off in the distance. There are restrooms at the visitor center and a port-a-pot near the Twin Barns. If you plan on being outside for any length of time you should definitely take something to drink and possibly a snack. If you plan on walking from the visitor center all the way out to the Puget Sound viewing platform, be prepared with water and sunscreen. The boardwalk is nice and winds through the wildlife refuge. Be sure to take some binoculars or nice camera with a zoom so you can see the birds and other wildlife in the distance. Enjoy this peaceful area. No pets. No bicycles.
Love this place! Fairly quiet and respectful to the wildlife and you can see seals sleeping.
Aside from being crowded I enjoyed the time we spent there. The paths are well maintained. The buildings were not open but thats the norm these days.
This is the best place to go for a peaceful walk in the woods! Love it here more than anywhere else!
Beautiful walks, wildlife and outdoor spaces. Took family pictures by the old barns, great spot
Nice flat landscape, easy for kids to walk and easy for sturdy strollers. Manly wood path then some gravel and if your heading to the observation deck its a long walk out but great for bird watching and enjoying the breeze!
ALWAYS such a joy! Today we got close up photos of a wee little green frog w/black streaks on its eyes. Its back looked like someone had drizzled gold paint onto it. We video recorded what we think is a juvenile bald eagle as well. VERY large blue dragonflies all over the place! This place is ALWAYS wonderful.
Beautiful day, beautiful scenery, with a beautiful woman. My only neg would be the freeway sound from Interstate 5 in the background.
Very beautiful landscape with long board walk over water and sooo many birds!!!
Great place to stretch it your legs and see some nature. It $3 per car for parking. There is a nice gift shop, you can borrow a pair of binoculars by giving up your drivers license. The boardwalk was in good shape. It was pretty cold the day I was there so the water was frozen.
The walk is amazing! So much fun for sunsets, just make sure you get out by dusk, because the fates close. Bring sunblock if you want to walk to the end of the boardwalk and its sunny, there isnt much shade. But yes, its amazing and one of my favorite walking spots.
Nice leisurely stroll along a wetland/wildlife reserve. This is a basically dead level walk all the way to the end of the boardwalk. Great place for some birding. There is a use fee of $3 per carload but that gos towards keeping the place nice .
Beautiful! Its so nice to see the landscape being returned to its natural state.
I love this place! Ive been in WA for 1.5 years now and have traveled to many different parks/ trails, but this one is still my favorite.
Serene, peaceful, natural and so very relaxing. I live 5 miles away for 4 years and just made my first trip here. Walked the entire boardwalk. What an amazing place. Ill probably make this a weekly thing, its that great.
Nice relaxing place to take a walk and enjoy nature. Very clean area and did not see any trash anywhere. The boardwalk lays the path for a scenic view with some stationary information plaques of what birds and plants to expect.
A pleasant surprise. So close to the highway, I expected that to dominate the experience. After walking a bit past the remains of the old farm and onto the boardwalk, I didnt even think about it. Ranier is off to the side above the treeline. Herons everywhere - doing their thing. I didnt see any other bigger birds.
Lots of Bird views. Open meadows. Lots of restrictions too, no jogging, bikes, dogs. Its a bird sanctuary. There is a neat boardwalk loop for about a mile. No social distancing on that if you want to pass someone.
Been driving by for years, it is definitely worth a stop. Walked the round trip and we were all delighted by wildlife and sounds of nature.
Gorgeous place. Only $3 is required to park but I gave $5 just because of the effort of the park.
A beautiful estuary with many birds that change with the seasons. There are about 4.25 miles of walking trails and many lovely spots to sit and eat a picnic. Good for everyone. Trails are hard packed gravel or boardwalk.
Great in every way. Perfect for all activity levels. Decent bathrooms at the gift shop area and portapotties near the board walk trail. Dogs are NOT allowed, so leave the pup at home.
Beautiful and tranquil. It feels like you are far from civilization. We saw seals and herons and eagles. A great escape only an hour from home.
My favorite outdoor place to take my daughter for a walk! Always lots of nature to see!!!
This is just an awesome place for watching wildlife. Also clean and well maintained.
My family LOVES this place. Every view is like a post card!
Very lovely. Enjoyed all the signs they had up for information. They even had a bird Sonogram to tell you different bird songs. Too bad I came on a Tuesday, as the information center was shut. Bummer.
Nice place for an easy walk and enjoying the nature Bring your binoculars if you have them. You might be able to see seals laying in the sun.
This is a beautiful park with a pleasant easy walking trail with easy access just off I-5. The downside is that it is very popular and thus very crowded. If you are planning to go I would suggest getting there early.
Well maintained and very quiet scenic surroundings.great place to relax.
Great place to drop a kayak. Lake has a lot of vegetation nearby so it’s not really suited for swimming near the shore.Middle of the lake was awesome though.
I saw dozens of different bird species during a short two-hour visit. Beautiful!
We always enjoy walking here. Not as many birds this time, for some reason.
Always a great place to visit with a nice hike out on the boardwalk to overlook the sound.
We went here for a field trip it was a really nice place to visit and see. I probably wouldn’t come back but it was fun to have all the kids do the activities inside too. That huge thing hanging from a tree in the photos is a wasp nest and it’s real so keep your eyes open and be careful. I also had a snake slither past me it wasn’t big but it scared me none the less.
Frogs, snakes and toads! Awesome birds. A wonderful walk in nature make sure to hit The riparian forest overlook.
Nice walk through the marsh. Nice visitors center. Best advise is to plan to be there within 2 hours before or after high tide.
Nice place to walk. Part of the boardwalk is close during duck season
This is a local beauty that everyone should experience. We went at low tide (you can google the tide schedule) and lifted rocks to search for small crabs. My 5yo loved it. There is also a small science center with staff that can answer questions. Lots of fun.
Worth traveling for. This refuge features wetlands, forest, and field, but keeps visitors to a wooden path. You wont be hiking off path, and that is a good thing. This is the animals home, we are just guests. $3 to park.Time of day, patience, knowledge, and habitat choice within the reserve may pay off if you are quiet, still, and lucky.
Great place to go to whether your by yourself or on a school trip. Great place for kids. Love the outdoors, and love what this estuary has to offer. Walking is very easy, great boardwalk. The birds, frogs and wildlife were spectacular, as we saw a bit of everything there. We were disappointed that we couldn’t walk the entire boardwalk, however we understand that a bridge was under construction.
A wonderful place to see all kinds of birds; a nice boardwalk over the wetlands. One of our favorite places in the NW...
Excellent area to watch for wildlife: everything from birds to river otters. I saw several pairs of otters playing. $3 donation to park. There are binoculars available to rent for free at the visitor center. Lots of walking and not all of it is paved, but does have gravel. There is a long boardwalk out to different viewpoints across the bay area. I love it here.
Went here with a photographer for family photos, beautiful old barn that we utilized lots of trees. Was a very nice nature park.
I took my students at my preschool and we had a blast. We didnt have time to see everything. The trails are simple. You have to have a good eye to see most animals. I advise bringing binoculars.
Very well builtt boardwalk but the very end is closed during hunting season. That part is only open in spring and summer.
Very pretty, well kept area. I enjoyed the trails & the views. I’ll definitely take my family here when i get the chance.
Great place well maintained well used always interesting experience.
Nicely maintained area to go walking. Lots of wildlife to see.
Rude employees. Super rude.Beautiful nature reserve. Vital habitat that needs to be preserved. Too bad the lazy, unhelpful, rude employees here just want to get through their day as easily as possible and by assisting as few visitors as they possibly can. Was also told that due to Covid, it was unsafe for the employees to assist visitors on the trails. Weird, since the reserve is open and they are allowing maximum capacity of visitors. Guess they dont care about the visitors!!
Perfect. Wonderful, well-cared-for boardwalk paths, educational signage, and considerate people who waited for this surprise moment to happen before continuing their adventure.
We saw so many animals! Song birds, frogs, a beaver, ducks, garter snakes... And so much more out on the salt water delta!! Its a great place for kids since the boardwalk is fully fenced. Be sure to go during the mid morning or early evening hours. When it gets hot in the afternoon, sometimes the animals hide.
Once you pay the parking fee at the kiosk, turn left and you have a choice of going on the raised walkway through the marshes, to the right at the fork. Or continue on and go left and find the gravel road way. This is good choice if you want to quickly get out to view the Puget sound. It was such a beautiful clear day that we could see all the way to Olympic national Park and Mount Olympus in the distance.Serios photographers were out in droves on a beautiful day, with their large camera lenses, so it really is a great place for photography. We saw a young little green frog scoot across the roadway and it seem to be learning how to jump. Tons of geese seemed to be returning, and we enjoyed watching them land on the water. All of this and we were only there for 45 minutes. We will definitely be back! Great place to visit rain or shine if you are a nature lover for photographer. Easy walk most of the way. Probably not easy for wheelchairs because both the walkways and the gravel road are bumpy.
Beautiful! Wooden boardwalk throughout the area. Wonderfully shaded, and variety throughout. $3. Entry fee per group.
A beautiful hidden gem. Best to go early in the morning.
Wonderful place to hike and explore. Such an amazing habitat for all kinds of wildlife. Worth the 3 dollars!
Love this place. Great for nature walks and photography!
My absolute favorite place to kayak. So serene and gorgeous with lots of birds to watch. If you want to kayak, youll need to launch at Luhrs Landing.
Great place to visit, lots of nice scenery. It costs $3 to visit but the area is well maintained so its worth it
So Beautiful! Lots of wildlife & birds. River & plains. Easy to social distance!
This is a nice park with a pretty walking trail.
Great place for kids. Boardwalks lead to great views, opportunities to see birds, and helpful interpretive signs.
Outstanding activity. Will visit again
Such a beautiful walk, depending on the season and even time of day the trail can look very different. Spotted several blue herons on my last visit. The volunteer staff inside the visitor center were so sweet and knowledgeable and easily answeted the few questions I had about the birds I spotted during my last walk.
You can see a variety of birds and landscaping is nice. Really cool when you see high tide roll in.
Very beautiful and peaceful, boardwalk in great location and shape. A great place to walk!
Great place to walk the boardwalk. Its a long boardwalk, great place for pictures and bird watching.
Wonderful trails in the Nisqually Valley. Out on the board walk is beautiful, dress to be out on the water but be ready to come in under the trees as you explore all the wildlife.
It was an incredibly hot day when we visited, but worth it for sure. The tide was just beginning to come in. What a trip to watch it slowly fill all the dry places. We got to see seals too
Beautiful, sunny day. Lots of cars in the parking lots, but plenty of space to properly socially distance. Dont forget to bring your mask.
Very nice park. Beautiful area with a lot of wildlife. Great for families.Only downside is the highway. You hear a constant noise...
This is basically a zoo, for 3 dollars. The trails are beautiful adn well maintained. The boardwalk was a lot of fun to walk down and take in the environment. 10/10 would come again
What a great place to visit. The boardwalk is well maintained and its an easy, enjoyable walk. I went in Oct and saw bald eagles, coyotes, king fishers, beaver, snow geese, and more.
Great walk! on a beautiful day it gives you all the vibes!
