So incredibly beautiful and the best part was not only the view after the hike but the dole pineapple whip at the bottom in the parking lot. But the views are breathtaking for sure. There were 148 steps near the top I believe that is what we counted. I recommend going early morning or late afternoon because of the heat and take water with you. There are a few view points on the way up where you can rest and see other views. It was just beautiful no matter where we were.
The views were amazing. The hike was not bad at all. There are 142 steps to get to the top, or there is an easier route if you go left after the tunnel. Rocks got a little slick after the rain, but the view was breathtaking. Also at the top we had good timing. It got busy after we were up there a few minutes. Total time up and back was about an hour and half. And Im average shape Id say.
Diamond Head hike was breathtaking and amazing but not before you hike up 1 mile of uneven paths, stairs, and a underground tunnel. Pay $5 to park to start your hike. Dont forget to bring your water and camera. There are plenty of places to take a break on the way to the top of the crater. Once at the top, the views are breathtaking and a lot of history to be read. Once you are finished you can hike down and purchase some merchandise or get some fresh food.
Loved it. Walked it on a cool day. Not a lot of people so that was nice. A quick trip to the top but its worth the time. Walk in was only $1! Family friendly.
It is quite close to Waikiki and you can easily get there by bus for less than $3 US in 2020. There is some steep stairs but most people would be able to reach it and return in 2 hours. There was a lady who appeared to be in her 60s with a walking stick returning. However on a hot day taking frequent stops is advisable
This is a fairly easy short (less than 1 mile) hike with a moderate incline and a section of uneven ground and a bit of stairs. The trail is well defined and has a number of lookout areas before reaching the summit. A leisurely hike with plenty of time at the top took 1.5 hours round trip!
We arrived here via the bus from Waikiki (only $5.50 per day). It drops you off about 5 minute walk from the entrance and from there its about a 15 minute walk to get to the information centre and center of the crater. Entry fee is $1 per person walking in and $5 per car. The walk to the summit is relatively easy, its quite an uneven foot path but the gradient isnt too bad untill you start to get closer to the top. It takes roughly 30-40 minutes to walk up depending how quick you walk. The views from this point are truly amazing.
Fantastic hike. The paths, food and amenities are very well thought out. The rest areas are also appropriately spaced. The area is safe and well maintained for the whole family.Lots of tables to sit at, at the entrance and end of the hike. The food trucks on site cater and easily manage the crowds of tourists that use the park.
Nice trail, breath taking views. The trail is well constructed, but steep. Go early in the morning to avoid traffic jams and full parking lot. Take a water bottle. Not too difficult, but youll get a workout!
Would have liked it more without busloads of our Asian friends. They were rude and clogged the best parts of the very top waiting for the sun to rise. I get it. Otherwise besides being a lot more touristy its a great climb and spectacle.
Diamond Head is part of the system of cones, vents, and their associated eruption flows that are collectively known to geologists as the Honolulu Volcanic Series, eruptions from the Koʻolau Volcano that took place long after the volcano formed and had gone dormant. These eruptive events created many of Oʻahus well-known landmarks, including Punchbowl Crater, Hanauma Bay, Koko Head, and Mānana Island in addition to Diamond Head.Diamond Head, like the rest of the Honolulu Volcanic Series, is much younger than the main mass of the Koʻolau Mountain Range. While the Koʻolau Range is about 2.6 million years old, Diamond Head is estimated to be about 500,000 to 400,000 years old.
Awesome views from the top. With large crowds it took us 40 minutes to the summit. Only 20 minutes back down. Skip the pineapple whip and get the mango whip instead. You wont be disappointed. Must do while here!!
Go early - a lot of visitors come to this attraction so it can be very busy as the day goes on! We went mid morning and the path was pretty busy going up and going down, but it was still a very enjoyable hike! It was beautiful at the top and the 360 view was AMAZING! There is a steep stair portion, but also a longer flatter route to the top which is great for all hikers! Tasty treats at the bottom when you finish! Bring water and sun screen and solid walking shoes! We enjoyed the top for about 30 minutes, so I would factor at least 2 hours for the hike from start to finish!
It take about 40-60min climb up to top,the hiking trail was beautiful and not very hard. A lot partial shade areas. The views on the top would take your breath away! It was worth to climb up there.
It was awesome to have a chance to hang out inside a dormant volcano with our family. They have food and drinks in the volcano so you dont have to take anything if you dont want to. I would recommend walking shoes if you are planning to take it all in. Also if you have kids, I dont know if you are going to get the chance to see it all unless they love to walk and climb a lot of stairs. Its worth the visit though as its a beautiful place to visit. If you take the time to visit I hope you enjoy as much as we did!
Amazing views!!! Fun hike, great for ages 6 and up. Depending on the time of year you can enjoy a refreshing Coconut or Pineapple drink from Dole.
Easy hike (paved). Incline with stair sections. Railing throughout. Some railing sections have safety fencing/mesh, others do not.(as of 7/27/19) Parking fee $5, walk in fee $1. Cash only.
Great historic place to visit and hike up. Id recommend a guide to get some historical information as you walk, though its not required. Its not much of a hike, but the paths can be tricky. I imagine rolled or sprained ankles occur her often. A must visit.
Beautiful views when you get to the top of this ex-volcano. But I highly suggest to go before the sun comes up or before the sun gets overhead at noon because the elevation and heat is enough to make you extremely tired and unmotivated to move. The paths start off paved, but then it gets rocky for majority of it. As you get to the top, there is a larger set of stairs to climb. If you take it, it will bring you to another set that swirls upwards. Eventually it takes you to the old military look out where you climb out to reach the top of the volcano.Otherwise you can take a long wrap around the volcano to get to the top. The views are stunning at the top. You get a great view of the city.At the bottom there are ice cream trucks, gift shop, and a picnic area where you can eat and rest. Throughout the hike there are some look out points and areas of rest.
The view at the top was incredible...and well worth the arduous hike.I wish the brochure had a better map up the trail with mileage markers...and a better idea of how long it takes to walk the trail. If you want the self-guided tour you have to pay at least $4.I also needed a water refill at the top and saw several pieces of litter along the trail. So...maybe put some trash cans along the trail and several 5-gallon jugs at the top.
We visit this park every time we come to Oahu. 2 miles hike that takes you to the top. The rocks can be a bit slippery when raining but the view is well worth it. The grass field by the visitor center is also picturesque. Kids love running there.
Awesome hike. Not too long or short and the view at the top is incredible.Things to be aware of:The whole trail is paved, but be aware that a lot of it is very bumpy, wear shoes with good traction. Near the top there are a good amount of steep stairs as well. Theyre also a few fairly dark tunnels near the top.Theres a bathroom at the bottom of the trail as well as a water bottle filling station.
It is one of the most amazing places that you must visit in Hawaii. Climbing up might take between 40-70 minutes to reach the highest point. The entire place closes at 6, but no one is allowed to start climbing after 4:30. It is a great experience and must do thing in Hawaii.
Great hike. Easy to find and the walk way is paved for most of it. Definitely busy, as a lot of people go, but was worth waiting for parking in the dedicated lot. If you park somewhere else, you still have to pay to get in, and the nearest parking is a good walk. You are in the sun pretty much the whole time, so keep that in mind and bring water. The view is incredible, and its nice for those looking for a cheap activity, thats not an all day adventure.
This hike is the most user friendly on this island but still a little challenging. It IS worth it and so much fun. The view is amazing. And at the beginning or end of the hike, there are restaurants and a bathroom.
The hike to the top looks daunting, however dont let it scare you - takes 40 minutes at reasonable pace and there is fresh pineapple smoothie when get back. Parking can get full, but there is a park on the bottom where you can walk up into the crater.
Great views. You have a climb if you want to go to the top. We did it In flips flops, it’s not hard going it’s just a lot of steps. Well worth the workout.
Great nature hike that is not too difficult for those starting out. Issues I have deal with it being very packed due to it being a tourist spot. Not really a hike if theres crowds of people funneling through a single path and then overcrowding the top at the end of the hike. Overall, not too bad, will do again but probably before 700am when it starts getting packed. Be mindful though, this place charges $1 per person who walk in and $5 per vehicle of you decide to park there considering it a public place with limited parking to begin with.
Fantastic views. Challenging hike but a short one. You can make it to the top in about 30 - 40 mins.Climb stairs, walk through tunnels, climb more and you will be rewarded with the panoramic view! The snack and drink station will help you recover after returning.
Such a nice place for a hike and close to town. take a shuttle bus to this place! dont be a rookie and wear high heals or dress shoes. dress in sport gear, bring a water bottle and go in the morning!
Great hike. Its quite mild only the stairs part toward the end is a bit intense but the magnificent view on the crater worth everything. After getting off the mountain don’t forget to reward yourself with some sweet treats. Dole whips is very limited even in Hawaii.
A ridiculously beautiful area that’s a bit crowded, but worth it for the simple if steep hike, and marvelous views from anywhere in the park. The crater itself is cool, but the views from the top of the ocean and the city are absolutely breathtaking.
Best place to see the entire island. No view quite like it! The hike was my morning exercise. Wear appropriate shoes..no sandals.. its an uphill sidewalk then unleveled rocky path to the top. Go at your own pace.
The hike up Diamond Head can take 30-60 min. You can be a walk-in and pay $1 to enter the park or you can park your car for $5. The parking is small so they have a wait line inside the parking area where as parking spots become available you are ushered to that spot. I was a walk in. There are restrooms at the start of the hike. The hiking trail is a mix of cement, rocky terrain, a short tunnel, and stairs. The stairs are very steep. You zig zag along side of the mountain until you reach the final part of the hike, the stairs. I would guess that for most people the stairs is the hardest part of the hike. The hike does have several places where you can sit and rest.I walked from my hotel in Waikiki and the round trip journey was about 9 miles when it was all said and done. About 6 miles of the 9 were walking to and from the entrance of Diamond Head.
This is a great place to visit while on Oahu whether youre staying in Honolulu/Waikiki, Kailua, or the North Shore. There is a fee if you park in the lot on site, but we did see a lot of people walking from other parking locations up to the trailhead. I would say that its totally worth it to pay for parking since the trek up to the top is fairly strenuous in that its at a slight incline, but long and if its sunny then youll feel the climb even more. There are 2 steep sets of stairs at the top to get to the observation point. Make sure you bring water to drink along the way or you could easily get dehydrated. Views are spectacular and its cool to see all of Waikiki in its glory set next to the ocean.
Another excellent spot for hiking. $5 (per sedan) to park closer and I say worth it knowing youll be hiking a lot. They have a truck near the info center for drinks and snack. Good clean restroom at the bottom as well as water refill station. Make sure you bring enough water. One 32oz water was good enough for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids), but we did run out right at the bottom. Probably smart to bring at least three 16oz if you dont mind carrying. Very easy hike until you get near the top where you have a crazy flight of stairs. But you can by pass by turning left after the tunnel, its a loop. But whats the fun in that? I did it in one shot without stopping and kids did good as well. Excellent view of the crater and range once you get up there.
Great hike with great views, pay the parking, its worth it. The views are amazing. The stairs at the top are kind of tough.
So worth the hike! Beautiful 360 view looking out at the ocean, mountains, Honolulu and light house. Although I didnt think I would survive the hike once we started we did stop a lot so we could take in the breath taking veiws! When you leave make sure you stop and get a fresh cut pineapple juice .
Awesome hike! About half of the trail is paved, the other half is a mixture of uneven rocks and stairs. Views from the bunker are surreal. Last hikes of the day are at 4:30. Also a great dole vendor at base with smoothies and refreshments. A must do if in the area.
Im not a hiker and I dont like walking too much but managed to reach the top and it was an awesome view! So worth the early wake up time. We didnt go too early. I think we got there at around 7am and finished in about 2-2.5hrs. Took our time hiking because my mom (64y/o) went with us. There were little kids who did it too. It can be a little bit slippery if its raining but overall, a great activity for the whole family.
Amazing trek up the hills of Diamond Head Crater! Bring water for the hike and cash for a treat at the food truck. They serve delicious pineapple treats like smoothies, swirls and fruit slices. We had a great time and spent around 2,5 hours for this adventure
Amazing hike! Well structured! Beautiful views at the top indeed! Its a dollar per person for entry :)
Terrific hike! Stunning panoramic views especially of Waikiki. Great history. Entrance fee to park is $5 cash. Bring extra for the fresh Dole pineapple juice! Bring lots of water and sunscreen and where appropriate shoes. Lovely picnic spot if you want to bring lunch.
Great hike that rewards you with a spectacular 360 view of Honolulu and much of Oahu. Leave early, bring plenty of fluids, hats, sunglasses, and good walking shoes are recommended. Parking is available within the crater, but fills up quickly. There is a free public parking down the street, but your hike to the summit will be longer.
Very touristy and kind of crowded, which I didnt love, but beautiful views at the top! That said I still got the tourist necessity pineapple whip at the bottom. I enjoyed the view of the downtown Honolulu cityscape and Koko Head. I did this in sandals - its a really easy hike on a mostly paved road and stairs.
We loved it!!!! View pics!! I started off fast and didn’t past myself so I almost stopped once we got to the first set of stairs. Super gorgeous views, the Sun loved my Skin, weather was perfect!!! It did rain for about 5-10mins but we were already at the top so we just sat at one of the boxes/lookouts. Must do hike for sure!!
Hike was okay. It wasnt easy but also wasnt too difficult. View was really good at the top if its not too crowded. Only reason why we are giving a three star is because of the heat, which cant be helped. Lol.
Easy trail to hike. Allocate at least 2hrs to account for parking and the hike itself. Just make sure to be properly equipped for it. Water, comfortable footwear and a good camera.
Fun little hike. The stairs and the hike uphill was not a joke. Bring drinks and comfy shoes. We got there just in time before it started raining.
Nice hike, pretty short but I would say its moderate due to the stairs at the end. Really nice view of the city. The parking lot there is small, and often gets full quick, recommend to come earlier if you need to park
Easy to finish. The views are amazing
Amazing trail and views from the top! Highly recommended
Beautiful sight. Didnt get a chance to go on the trail but hopefully next time. This view is right before we get to Diamond Head.
Epic scenery but too many people, especially at the peak. It isnt a tough hike but you are still required bro be physically fit. Roads are bumpy and isnt paved nicely, especially approaching the summit. Nonetheless it was an interesting height with the best scenery of Honolulu city.
Really great views and cool hike . Lots of steps, tight spaces, and a tunnel. I recommend caution if you are claustrophobic. Had a hard time finding parking and ended up parking on a street 0.5 miles away from trail head. Might save yourself some time and just park on a street instead of going up and turning around because the lot is full. We also saw some wild ferrets (or weasels, not sure how to tell the difference) and a variety of birds. The hike was definitely worth the trip.
Amazing views! The hike was not as hard as others made it sound and there were a lot of people on the road... but it was worth it! The really busy places are busy for a reason!! Encourage you to go early in the morning or you may be driving around trying to park.
Very easy “hike” with great views. The trail is a little uneven and you need to use stairs to reach the best lookout points, but overall it was a very easy walk up. It took us about 45 minutes up and back. A great place to take mainland friends or family to get nice views of the island. It’s $5 to park or $1 per person if you walk in. Be sure to grab some dole whip at the pineapple stand afterwards!
Awesome easy hike. The worst part was finding parking. The parking lot at the base of the hike gets full fast so you have to park at the very beginning. If you move fast it’s hard to go around people but the views at the top are amazing.
Diamond Head is amazing. The trails could use a little more maintenance, but its a hike up a crater--at least there is a trail! We did the hike carrying a toddler and a baby in our carriers, so it isnt extremely intense. Bathrooms at the beginning of the trail are clean. Parking is limited, so go as early as you can and plan ahead.
This hike was super fun. It was about 1.5 miles round-trip and had a ton of steps. I would highly suggest walking through the military bunker. We even saw whales from the top.
We hiked to the top. Beautiful amazing near 360deg views at top. Highly recommended. Picnic tables and Parking is very limited so be prepared to wait in line for at least 30min or more. Food truck sells pineapples, burgers and drinks.
So fun and family friendly! Our 3 year old did it all on her own. Can be busy with tourists, and you may have to park far away and walk in, as parking seems limited. We arrived at 9 AM on a Monday and the lot was already full. But you only have to pay $1 / person if you walk in, rather than the $5 per car (our baby and 3 yr old were free), so we saved some money.
Easy hike although uphill with constant great views along the way. Highly recommend getting there for the 6 AM open to beat the heat and the crowds to see the sunrise!
Fairly easy hike up. Takes 45 minutes going at a comfortable pace. Once at the top, amazing views of Honolulu and Waikiki beach
Very nice views for the city. Hiking is easy but lots of steps. So take your time to go up.
Easy hike, lots of people mid morning! Great views
Great view and nice walk. Best not to go when its to hot and make sure you bring plenty of water there is no where to fill up along the way
Get here early, the trail can get crowded. When you reach the second set of stairs, if you go left you can hike to the top without having to climb that big set of stairs and maneuver out of the bunker. The views are worth the trip, HIGHLY recommend.
If you are visiting Waikiki I could not recommend to do this more! It is an easy walk most of the way until you reach about 10 mins away from the top, which then becomes quite challenging. There are a lot of stairs too climb before you reach the summit. However you are rewarded with a beautiful picturesque view looking out too the whole of Waikiki and the ocean. Recommend catching an uber or bus there, we arrived at 6:15am and the parking lot was already full. Was quite surprised with the amount of people there for sunrise.
This place really caught me off guard. So beautiful. If you exercise regularly this is not a difficult hike. Would be a nice spot to get your daily cardio if you ran up and back down. Can be done in flip flops but shoes are definitely better.
Go early. Take water. So many countless people going up without water and someone ended up passing out at the top while we were there. Please go prepared, its pretty consistent uphill followed by the equivalent of 4 flights of stairs to get to the top. Go more prepared than you think you have to be.
The hike can take about 90 minutes round trip. We did it in an hour but had to keep moving to get up and back that quickly. They have a small gift store and food vendor at the base but once you get started there are no services on the hike.
Great easy hike with incredible views. Some incline but very doable.Lots of spots on the way up if you need a break, but no bathrooms on the trail. The trail has a distinct stone footpath which in my opinion is near paved with hand rails. You need to keep an eye on your ankles because of the stone but do not need to worry about any dirt/soil or loose ground sections.Definitely aim to avoid peak hours The trail does get narrow in places and can feel tight with other people around. You hike up and back down the same route which is why it can get busy.Bathrooms and HP Co. Truck located at the bottom where you start. Enjoy a shave ice when youre done!
Go early as they advised. We got there only at 620 am and already the parking lot was getting full the diamond package through the visitors center for $20 is a wonderful bargain. At top after you get through tunnel go to the stairs on the right its harder but less travelled. The views are magnificent and worth the trip up. If it rains remember to be careful to not slip. Great place
Can get crowded which resulted in the choice of waiting in line with car for parking spot to open up or park outside of the park. Did the latter and walked in paying the one dollar fee. Other than that spectacular views of Waikiki, the Pacific Ocean abound. If you visit Oahu it is certainly worth the time to make the climb.
I loved this place. I had a small bite to eat before going for the hike and rewarded myself with a pineapple smoothie after i left. the soft serve at the place was great. the views were awesome. i dont recommend bringing very small children (or infants in that case) on the hike as there are some steep steps. Great experience overall
Roughly paved trail that ultimately gives a great view of the diamond crater and the shoreline. The large number of stairs near the end were a surprise and did make me a little short of breath (there were nearly 200 stairs!). The tunnel that walks you through an entire mountainside was really neat.
Very nice 360 views. Get there before 5:30 am and get in line. They open at 6am. $5 per car or $1 per walking person. Hike up is about 25-40 min. Down about 20min. Get extra shirt to change. You will be sweaty. Get water and snack bar and cell/gopro/camera for nice footage. Also get wet paper towel or something to wipe hands from dirt and rust from handrails. Dont go at noon. Too hot. Hope this helps.
Being on top of the Diamond Head gives you an awesome view over Honolulu/Waikiki. You can walk from Waikiki (if it’s not too warm) and take the bus back if you don’t want to walk back.Annoying though that people apparently don’t know what ‘end of trail’ signs mean. They should put camera surveillance in place and fine those people $250 each or something.
Totally worth the hike for the view. Just prepare yourself if you havent hiked in a bit. Overall its difficulty isnt high but its not a scroll. If you havent hiked in a bit dont worry there is benches.
Took me around 30 mins to get to the top and enjoy a clear view of the city. The scenery is amazing. Highly recommended
The best hike ever and it will take an average person about 30-40 minutes to get to the tip top and its worth it. Bring full bottle of water & good pair of tennis shoes. Trails are uneven in some places and theres a tunnel so if you are claustrophobic & it will get a bit dark inside as you walk thru the low ceiling tunnel.. just a note of caution.. There are stairs as well, one set which is very long and steep, but theres an alternate route which is a little longer but easier route. The stairs will be a challenge for some. I think there were 3 sets of stairs. None of the photos here are pics of the tip top but I made it. I recommend hiking in the morning. It was 4:00 when I started and I think it was way too hot. Also the latest you can start hiking is 4:30. Theres a juice truck near the parking lot and at 6:00 it is closed. Buy your pineapples and juice before 6:00
Fantastic easy hike. Very very busy with your groups but honestly worth braving the crowds for— incredible views at the top and your reward can be a coconut juice or pineapple smoothie at the base after your hike (bring cash!). Worth the visit for anyone who is visiting or new to the island.
Freaking beautiful! Doesnt take long. Bring lots of water because it will get hot.
Goals. Next time (if there is a next time) I will be in better shape. The steps were to much so i didnt make it to the top. But still got some great pictures :)
About the only problem with this place is it is extremely crowded and difficult to find parking. They are so close rather early. Other than that it’s still a great place.
Fun hike. Gets really crowded though.. so go early if you can
A good place for hiking. Because we have visited many many hill or montains, this one is not so fantastic to us. But the special property is that it is the volcano center. The stone here is special, combine with the plants, I think no one else can mimic this hiking environment. So although its looks a not high.
Best view from the top of Diamond Head State Monument. Come early in the morning since it will be very crowded (everyday). The trail is pretty easy; you will spend around 30’-45’ to get to the top. $1 for the ticket. At the entrance, there will be a pineapple truck which you can find dole whip and smoothie... yummy and worth it after the hike.
Diamond Head is a beautiful summit that looks over Waikiki and the coastline. The climb is entirely paved and pretty mild. This hike is accessible to a broad spectrum of abilities, and definitely worth the effort. However, bring plenty of sunscreen! It gets HOT!
Must see destination when visiting the island. Souvenir shop, refreshments and 1.5 mile hike. Leads to the top of Diamond Head crater. Lots of history to learn about very interesting. Only cost $1
What an incredible place, in addition to a great little hike we enjoyed fantastic panoramic 360 degree views from the summit. There is a lot of history and stories as well that were in fun to learn. The hike was rather interesting particularly the single 100 step stairway with two way traffic. At the summit the views of Honolulu are incredible, the water, the boats, mountains, beaches, the houses that climb up the surrounding mountains were a pictures just waiting for you to take. If you get there this has got to be on your list of things that are a must do. Enjoy.
The views from the top are great, but its packed with tourists and the topmost point is packed like sardines. Its very hot on the parts of the trail that arent shaded, so bring water. Lots of stairs, but otherwise its a quick and easy hike.
The hike is rough. Going up hill is exhausting. There’s also a lot of stairs to climb. And it just seems like it’s going to keep going and going and going. A lot longer than anyone mentioned in other reviews. The view was amazing. You can pretty much see all of Honolulu. After you come down you’ll probably be exhausted. There’s a bathroom there and also drink and food truck. The drinks were pretty good and they had ice cream as well.Parking was another issue when we got there. It said that the parking lot was full. But if you wait you can find a spot after you pay. So if you have to attend don’t worry if it’s full just wait on the side after you pay and they’ll find your spot.
Amazing view from the top and i like thé old bunker
The views from the top is amazing. The hike itself is not too strenuous. Near the top it splits into left (easy) and right (hard) trail. The hard trial has two series of very steep stairs. Remember to bring water! It gets really hot if youre hiking in the middle of the day. Once youre done go back down for some pineapple smoothie, pineapple slices or shaved ice of all kinds of flavours.
Beautiful 360 views great hiking experience for all ages.
