Let me start by saying that you should definitely avoid this hike if it has been raining. It gets very slick at the top. That being said, the hike is absolutely beautiful. The views are amazing. Its mostly roots, steps, etc. It gets steep in some areas. Theres a picnic table rest area about halfway up. Its a good spot to take a breather, because shortly after is when you hit the steps. The steps are a little unnerving, for me at least. I dont know how many there are, but theres quite a few. The first half of the hike is mostly switchbacks. I would do it again.Parking is in a resigned neighborhood. Dont leave any trash and keep noise low.
This is a true adventure! Hiking the trail you go from one type of foliage and scenery to a completely different type each third of the trail. This hike is not for the faint of heart. We took all of the kids with us (6, 8, 12, 16). The views are absolutely beautiful. WEAR BUG SPRAY!!! There are a lot of mosquitos but if you wear bug spray, you will be just fine. There are a few areas where you have to climb over roots and rocks with steep inclines. We did the hike down in the pouring rain....that was interesting. Towards the end of the trail there are a lot of stairs that have been cut/put there to help you traverse the mountain. If you are not in the best shape, your butt and legs will be sore the next day. Every inch of the climb is worth the views at the end! Absolutely beautiful and they make for great pictures.
This was an intense uphill route but the reward at the top and the view were totally worth all the stair stepping and hard breathing. Even got a little chilly at the top so it was a nice break from being all hot and sweaty and a great way to start the decent back to my car! If you like my review, please follow me :)
Great afternoon hike. We left at 5:30 pm and did not make it to the top for fear of not having having enough day light to get down. It rained, but the tree coverage prevented us from getting wet. That was pretty cool. These picnic tables are at the midway point. Next time I will leave an hour earlier, enough to be able to make a full round trip. Its a good 3 hour hike at least for a novice
7km from round trip. Bring water and maybe a snack. It is usually pretty dry until you reach the steps closer to the top. Breathtaking views at the Summit.
It wasnt muddy when we went and it was sunny, so there were great views. Parking can be a little hard since its residential before the trail head. Lots of people with kids and dogs. Lots of roots to tread over so bring something with good grip and that are comfortable. Bring plenty of water because, although it is covered by trees for the most part, the climb becomes a little strenuous. That being said, dont be surprised to see people wearing slippers or running up/down the trail. Difficulty 4/10.
No parking structure for this trail, only street parking by the houses.Takes just 1 and half to 2 hours up and 1 hour down. Going up is not too bad in the first half but second half (after passing the benches) is more elevated. The majority of the time during this hike, youll be in the shades. Its gonna get tougher going up but the view is definitely worth it. On a cloudy day, youll literally be in the clouds and on the sunny day youll get a better view of the city. Either way, not super duper long of a hike and the view is phenomenal.
Plan to spend about 3hrs from start to finish here. Awesome hike and its mostly in the shade. Lot of switchbacks in the beginning then at the ends it 3 set of stairs and each set is longer than the previous. Feels like kokohead stairs since youve already been hiking for a bit. The view is rewarding!!
Nice shady hike. If its rainy, make sure to have good hiking shoes.
Amazing hike! Easy and moderate for those that arent avid hikers. Towards the end of the hike it quit steep but once getting to the peak it is welll worth it! Seeing both sides of the island, Diamond Head, and all these beautiful beaches. I highly recommend this hike for a nice day trip. Took our group 1 and half hours to get to the top while making multiple water breaks. Pets are allowed if leashed. All In all highlight of the trip
Long hike and nice views but we do prefer Wiliwilinui Ridge over this hike, it was shorter and more of a 360 view.Parking is in a residential area. This hike was longer than posted on All Trails. It starts with lots of switch backs in a forest. Then some trail hiking. Then some stairs. These stairs were pretty washed out but still do able. It was pretty dry (except for a few sections in the forest) so the stairs werent too bad for us. The view from the top is very pretty. Approx 5 miles round trip. Took us about 4 hours. But there were definitely quicker groups passing us.
One of the most beautiful treks I have ever done. Its about an hour and 45 minutes of hiking up at slow to moderate pace. Amazing views at the top! Highly recommended!
One of my top hikes in oahu. Spectacular view.
My only complaint was the fact that they domt have designated parked. You have to park street side and walk a little to the trail head. But the hike itself and amazing and the view from the top is B E A U TI FUL! It does have stairs near the top, and an area at the half way mark that you can stop at and rest and it has a couple benches.
Amazing, challenging, strenuous, rewarding hike. Last public bathroom at Jack in the Box.
Great hike with an even greater view! Trail head starts at the end of the neighborhood on Kalaau so parking will be tight and be mindful of the residents too. First part of the hike is your average trail cutting back and forth up the face of the valley with lush jungle flora then it transitions into high Sierra pine. This section was especially tricky with all the exposed roots on the trail and where you start to feel your vertical gain. Can easily sprain an ankle or two if youre not careful. Last section of the trail is pretty much Stairmaster 4000 but its the last hurdle before you reach the summit. WORTH. Theres a few spots to rest at on the trail with views and a section thats been washed out/eroded but the trails clearly marked with signs. Majority of the trail is covered by the tree canopy until the last 20% so it wasnt all that hot. Dont know how the trail would be in rain but I wouldnt recommend it. Didnt feel crowded like Manoa Falls but then again its a more difficult hike. Hiked on a Sunday and met a dozen or so couples/duos and some with their canine companions. Enjoy!
Wet and muddy. I didnt have the right shoes. But as long as youre careful, youll be fine. Just say goodbye to clean shoes lol. The top was all foggy and couldnt see a thing. But sites on the way to the top were nice. Wish the weather was a bit clearer. I bet its beautiful. Fun hike though. Not too long or short. Picnic tables half way up. 9/10 would hike again
I love this hike for the views, pack a light lunch and a lot of water. Its a long uphill hike.
This is a favorite trail. It is wooded most of the way, so more comfortable because the sun isnt beating down on you. There are picnic tables (which can really use maintenance) for a break before the steepest part of the hill starts. The view is gorgeous at the top. Well worth the climb. Not for beginners. Beginners can go to Moleka trail or Puu Pia in the Tantalus system.
Beautiful hike. Well worth the trip. Not too hard either.
In my opinion, the best hike in Oahu. The changes in vegetation are out of this world (and look like they dont belong in Hawaii). 1600ft of elevation from the trailhead... About 5 miles round-trip. It is a strenuous hike, but not dangerous.
Spectacular ~5 mile hike that takes you up a mountain where a great view awaits. In total, it takes about 3 hours round trip to climb up and back down. The trail is mostly shaded and cool, but there are a few dense, humid bits. The last half mile on the way up are climbing up stairs and roots with few good rest spots. It’s challenging, but worth it. The trail near the bottom of the mountain isn’t always well marked.
One of the best all around hikes.
Views are great and the whole trail is interesting! Just watch your step;the roots are slippery
Awesome, dry hike with plenty of Shade and changing scenery. The view at the top is worth the hike up!
Its a tough hike, but the scenery is worth it. The first 1.5 miles is fairly easy, some rocks to climb over as the trail meanders up in elevation to 850 ft at around the mid point (the covered picnic area). From there, you start climbing. In the next ¾ mile or so, you gain another 900 ft in elevation. Its like doing a 2 mile hike, then climbing Koko head.
Quite a workout! A 2000ft+ climb through an interesting forest to get some lovely views borh South and East. Good trails, dry when we did it, but the tall step sections at the top we quite a challenge. A little cloudy at the top when we arrived so the views were a little diminished but a rewarding walk.
Took us just under 4 hours, view was totally worth it.
Excellent and challenging hike. Takes about 2 hours and the reward of a beautiful view and breeze at the top is well worth the trek.
Wonderful trail. There are many trees a long the trail so it is not hard to complete. Beautiful scenic. However, it requires a little effort if you want to go to the top to see both side of the island.
The ridge trail is tough, but I would recommend it for a fun outing and bring a picnic for the picnic area.
Beautiful and varied trail that goes through a number of nature types before reaching spectacular views on the highest parts.
About a three hour, moderate hike. Completely worth the views! Saw lots of dogs on the trail, and a couple spots were a little muddy. Mostly shady except for near the top of the ridge.
Very nice hike. Great views. Was a little muddy near the top and the tree roots were a little slippery, so trekking poles would come in handy. Definitely one of the best hikes on the island.
Great memories
This is a great trail for a run. Its shaded, and the switchbacks make for a good run. Its about 2.2 miles to the summit, and on a clear day, the view is spectacular.
Like most trails on the island, youll spend a bit of time gaining elevation. This is not a particularly hard trail but it is a good challenge for kids. Its worth taking a few hours to hike and seeing another view from the top of a mountain. P.S. on the way up youll come to a picnic table if you need to take breather.
This hike was a great way to cap the trip. It definitely makes you push yourself especially towards the end with the stairs. You can do this just take your time and bring water. I would not recommend this trail during or after a rain fall because it would be dangerous.
Fun ridge hike
Great place with some of the best views on the Island
Nice and easy trail with a great view at the end of it :) super dog friendly as well.
Has one of the best payoffs at the end of the trail on all of Oahu. Its a fairly vigorous hike but worth it with the beautiful views. Highly recommended.
Love it. I burn a lot of calories
An awesome trail and a hike into the rain forest. Have two trails to decide on, hike or just walk through.
Excellent hike that is shaded virtually the entire time with great views at the end.
The hike up was challenging but totally worth it for the views at the top. Coming down was much easier.
Not a easy hike, but the view at top is well worth it. Be carefully if it just rained it can get slippery.
Watch your step on the slopes. Not for kids
Great workout...disappointed at the top... great views, just small area, dusty... very little place to recover.
Intermediate trail, about 3-4 hours depending on the level, can be really tricky and slippery. The trail finishes with a good 15-20min steep slope made of stairs, but it is all worth it, for it end with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Bring lots of water.
Good moderately challenging climb with a cool view at the end. Lots of different terrain and trees. Also close to Kona Brewing for a nice cold beer afterwards!
AWESOME views.. worth the hike!!
Its an amazing view and trail
Very slippery and muddy conditions the day we went made for a much more challenging hike.
Slippery roots in chacos top 1/4 of trail
Great hike for my group of girlfriends.
Love it!
Awesome hike with beautiful views at the top!
My favorite hike on this island :)
Hard hike, but view at the top on a clear day is EPIC!
Expect to walk upwards
Fun hiking trail
