Visiting the Washington Monuments is an awesome experience. It was built to honor brother George Washington, the first U.S. president. It is 555 feet tall. Even walking around at night is great. Make sure you go up to experience US history and admire the city and its surroundings through the N,S,E,W windows.
The Washington Monument is iconic. This is my first time seeing the obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, DC. This monument was built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, in the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States. I enjoyed visiting this monument on my most recent trip to the nations capital. I think my mother loved the monument more than I did. She was just standing there looking at it for what felt like an hour. Its a cool piece of Americana. I will be back again. Hopefully its still here the next time I visit. I will bring my kids and grand kids if I can produce some. Anyways, Ill be back again. Epic!
Truly a beautiful area. It feels safe and the grounds are very well maintained. It was great to see this part of history. It is a LONG walk, so be prepared for that. It was also nice to see all the locals going for runs around the area.
Washington monument never gets old. They have a renovated, earlier we were able to go to the top and see the view of White House and other places. It’s been few years, they are renovating this place.A must visit, if you’re around in the area. It has a nice lawn and the view is pretty good even standing outside of the monument.
First in War, First in Peace, and First in the hearts of his countrymen.George Washingtons military and political leadership were indispensable to the founding of the United States. As commander of the Continental Army, he rallied Americans from thirteen divergent states and outlasted Britains superior military force. As the first president, Washingtons superb leadership set the standard for each president that has succeeded him. The Washington Monument towers above the city that bears his name, serving as an awe-inspiring reminder of George Washingtons greatness. The monument, like the man, stands in no ones shadow. The Washington Monument, designed by Robert Mills and eventually completed by Thomas Casey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, honors and memorializes George Washington at the center of the nations capital. The structure was completed in two phases of construction, one private (1848-1854) and one public (1876-1884). Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father. When completed, the Washington Monument was the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches.
A non forgettable visit, although its been 5 years but I still can feel the same . adorable piece of history and a amazing place to capture beautiful pictures as well!
️My eye is always drawn to the monument when driving in and out of DC, taking off and landing from DCA, in all seasons, day and night. I hope you enjoy some of the shots I have taken over the years I am posting here. Sadly, I have lost many shots to the cloud. Some of my favorites are ones shot in the wee hours. Can you tell which ones they are?
The worlds tallest obelisk built to commemorate George Washington is one of the iconic symbol in DC. Hard to miss as you can see it all the way from a great distance. Great view from across the park where there are several food trucks on standby ready to take care of your snacking requirement for the day. Better to stand a bit further away to actually take a good photo.
The capital of this great nation where we are all equal!
Absolutely fantastic place. If you are an American, you need to visit this monument to our greatest President. Wonderful views of the city that you can get no where else. Now it is easier than ever with the online ticket reservation system. Go and visit, you will not regret it.Only con: Slow down the elevator when passing the stone donated by the States, it goes far too fast!
I was very lucky to get a free ticket early the morning. I would recommend getting up early and go get your free tickets. The waiting time to go in eland up is about an hour give or take. But the views and history around this monument is well worth it. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Washington.
I definitely recommend this place. It is great. You get a great view of the nations capital from up there. And even if you dont go up the monument and park are beautiful. The National mall is amazing. Here are some pics.
One of the United States majestic and proud monuments built in honour of George Washington.
Beautiful area that is well maintained. Definitely worth the trip.
Had a great person working in front asking people if they had questions. He told us about the tickets to ride up to the top being free... this guy deserves some credit! Great experience. Even better views. They didnt rush us at all. Highly recommended.
We got walk-up tickets for the tour of the Washington Monument - my first time ever going up the elevator to the observation deck. It was incredible. A truly great way to see D.C. after walking the Mall and to the monuments ... gave our little one a sense of everything she saw, how far she walked, and the connections between everything. It is worth getting up early to get walk-up tickets (just go to the ticket window at the back of the gift shop) ... tickets are FREE!Security is a little tight - literally because there isnt much room - so just be patient and prepared. Its so worth it!
Had a great time visiting DC. Lots to see and remind me why America is great.
There are some things that require no debate or afterthoughts. If your visiting the District of Columbia, you must see and visit certain historical sites and monuments. The Washington Monument is on that list. The tallest freestanding stone structure in the world. No metal framework of any kind. The 360 views are spectacular. Another awe inspiring visit.
Wonderful monument! We took great pics! Hoping we could get inside though we still, we got amazing pics. It was blazing hot and there werent trees around to its pretty hot.
2020 FebruaryTheres not much to see on this one.. its just an iconic structure in American history that symbolizes so much!Plan ahead. Its free. Tickets to go up via an elevator gets sold on-line months ahead for a $1. They distribute more tickets on-site but make sure you fall in line to get tickets as early as 730am. By 830am, there were no more tickets left. The view above is incredible. As every building in this city, you have to go through an airport-like security.A must-see!If this review helped you in anyway, please give it a thumbs up!
Beautiful open field around the monument. There are lots of food trucks. The area is so lively!
An amazing sight to look up and awe.
Me and my wife and my friends visited here last Sunday for a day trip. It was really good weather to visit all museums and all memorial monuments. I saw it for the first time and I think it was really huge when we get closer. I didn’t go on top but just to visit is really nice. I also noticed that there was so many food track that I can get any kinds of food there that also very satisfying!!
The view is cool. Wish the windows were a bit bigger but thats probably structurally difficult. Cool museum inside. You must get there early (8:30am) to get the free tickets thought.
Lovely building. It really stands out and brings up certain feelings. The reflecting pool is a perfect place to observe and reflect. If you go during sunset hours you can really appreciate the changing colors of the sky reflecting off the monument. Definitely recommend
Awesome building. Love the location and the setup. Very unique. Great view to the Lincoln Memorial from there. Did not have time to go up there, but wont be the last time I come.
What a nice scenic view. You are informed about the history of the monument while going up. The tickets are hard to get though they are free. Considering that its a small place up they allow only limited people every hour. We stayed there for 90 minutes.
A very impressive feet of engineering. Classical virginia sandstone and marble. Great for photos and family day trips!
Very good place to walk and take your family and take pictures. You may need to wear tennis shoes, if you want to enjoy everything. No establish trash cans and no restrooms available. So go the bathroom before you arrive there and be ready to spend at least 3 hours.
Center of National Mall and you can view this from a long distance..This is one of the top ten monuments in Washington. Amazing that it was all built with bricks and very interesting to see the color change caused by the halt in work before completion. This can be viewed from so many places but the best view is to walk down the wide mall.
This is a beautiful monument, located in the heart of Washington DC. in the walking distance you will find a lot of museum. You do need to purchase tickets earlier if you want to see the whole scenario from the top of that. They sell out insanely ️
It was great to get back after years of being closed from the damage sustained during a rare DC earthquake. The new security procedures are on the slower side. I guess its for a good reason. Opens to the public 9.19.19 tickets are first come first served.
Washington Monument is a special place has been shown in many movies. Its unique mark in the world.
Amazing to see this in person. Great for walking and running in the park. Definitely worth the walk and exploring around the area. Lots of people in the park. I wish I could come back here in the spring for the cherry blossom.
Still Here!! Walking and driving follow the same principles. Stay in your lane, dont get to close or you will get hit. No horn, no flashing lights, no insurance. Old fashioned hit and run on foot. So pay attention. Best of luck
Amazing place to visit while in Washington D. C. Its a legacy of President Washington. You can see the top of the monument from The White House and many other places. It has visiting hours if you want see inside of the Monument tickets are issued on first come first serve basis daily.
It’s as big as you would expect and really cool to see in person. I am not sure if anyone gets to up top anymore. Enjoy the pics.
It was awesome! With the exception of all the people not wearing a mask. But it was awesome!
The monument area provides a picturesque view of Washington DC in a 360 dimension. A serene place for reflections and a lot of tourism activities to do. And for those who love jogging, enough places to.
The memorial is visible from far off whether you start from the Capitol Hill or from the Lincoln memorial. The best views are from the walk from Capitol Hill towards the memorial where there is lush green grass and ample parking. You can quickly reach close to the monument and access other attractions using your bicycle or car.️ This place has:Yes=Ramp access.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Entrance.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Restroom/Toilet.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Seating.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Parking.
Excellent place to visit! Please check Pictures amenities.
This is such an incredible place to fly a kite, have a nice relaxing meal or just enjoy the views of Washington DC. This is a must visit place if you are coming to Washington DC for a short period of time.
This iconic monument is a must see and not to be missed if you are visiting DC. This is a beautiful place to walk around with family to hangout and feel the capital. Lincoln memorial, White house, State capital Building and Smithsonian museums (National Air and Space, Arts and more) are all surrounded. Only thing is you have to walk a lot to see all the beautiful museums and monuments, but worth it.
It were so great for my twins kids they are so inprents the everything they saw there they want to go back again
Apart from the fact that it is one of the worlds most incredible buildings, its history and the history of George Washington is so impressive and going up to the top of that building and looking down at all the incredible structures around it really emphasizes its greatness. The view from the top is amazing and is definitely a must!
Interesting for all US history lovers. This is a wonderful place to walk around. You can go here walk over to the Lincoln Monument. We’re good shoes there is a long walk. Best visited during April and October. Weather is pleasant and mild and not too hot or too cold. The monument is open for visitors and you can go in.I love visiting Washington DC. All the museums and monuments are free and there’s so much to do here. Great place to bring your family to learn about your history.
Beautiful iconic US history. To go inside you need advanced tickets. You will see the stones are in 2 colors. Originally they only built it partially and due to war and money it was stopped for many years. Then when they continued, they had to purchase the stones from elsewhere thus different colors.
Impressive monument. I dont like the fact that they put a fence around it.... Best time to visit is spring and fall
You meet people from all over the world at this monument. It’s so amazing how a structure can attract so many.
First time going there that wasnt a school field trip and we were able to see it at night, was a wonderful experience
This place is really fun and cool at the top, and lots to learn about the history of the washington monument, thought be careful when you go, when I went up it was really foggy and we literally could not see anything, so if you go watch for the weather.
Didnt come close to this place- sadly, it wasnt part of my tour. However, from everywhere you see it, its impressive. Standing at 555 feet tall, its the perfect perspective centerpiece, while youre staring at it from the Lincoln Memorial, down the reflection pool. The Washington Monument is perhaps one of the greatest statues/monuments they have in DC, and is definitely worth a visit.
Definitely recommend this place. One of the iconic/historic sites of Washington DC. One place to not miss when in DC.The whole strip on the mall has so much history and is a perfect tribute to all those who worked hard to keep this nation together and worked hard for the nation.Every time we visit DC we spend an evening on the mall.Best place to pictures.YOu will see the monument pretty much everywhere in DC.
Very nice park and place to be evry day
Actually we pressed our way to the Black History Museum which is next to the national mall. They were having a special event, so we were not able to get in. It looked absolutely stunning from the outside. I cant wait to go back and take my family.
One of the nation’s great monuments located in DC with much to do around it. Beautiful walk extends down the national mall from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial with Capital Building set behind Washington Monument. Not to be missed spot if visiting DC.
What a great place to visit in Washington DC, the tour of the Washington monument was wonderful. An incredible place to learn history about the first president of the states. Great view definitely should go to the top!
Must do experience in Washington D.C. highest point and best view of the city. Admission if free, you just need to get the tickets early, they go fast. Tip: Reserve good time for this activity, even if you have a ticket at a specific time, it will take at least 30 minutes to get inside.
The countrys capital is a stunning spot to meander around and unwind. There are numerous attractions like the Washington Monument and relying upon when you come there will be some movement or another event. A few ends of the week are busier than others particularly around the cherry bloom and kite celebration time frame. I generally appreciate this region it is pleasant and unwinding to simply appreciate the view.
I thought this is just a perfect place to visit.its so American!! Makes you understand and appreciate this country.....just need to be ready for the long walks.the restrooms are so far apart..if you think you cant hold it I suggest to wear adult diapers...and of course a good pair of walking shoes is a must..please consult the great shoe outlets for their suggestions. I just know I only walked half the distance ..got to the rest room and walked back to the car..parking is really really so far away...But the place is historic and a great place to keep your heritage at heart...
Just in aweWhen you see itIt keep getting larger as you get closerAnd then when you get up to itIt makes you feel small and humbledBe sure to take a panorama if you canLots of opportunity for selfies and reflectionThere is a view to the lincoln monumentMight be a good opportunity for a lot of quality pics
Great place to visit. I would recommend to do the tour to the top first so that you can see all of the views and get an idea of what you want to visit in the area. Great aerial view of everything DC!
The whole National Area including Washington monument is amazing. I lived near to monument. But I think nobody’ll get bored even after visiting this place multiple times.
Amazing to see this at night. This whole area is beautiful and a great experience to take in at our nation’s capital. Decent distance between monuments. Be prepared to walk or rent bikes/scooters.
Absolutely the landmark in Washington D.C. You just cant miss it~It is the tallest building in Washington D.C. since they dont allow any high rise building here.Definitely a place to visit!
Under renovation so could only walk the grounds. Still a very nice and very amazing structure. Lot of lawn. Guess they do not worry about water on this coast.
Great experience and definitely a must do! Make sure to be there at 8am to get walk up tickets if you’re unable to reserve tickets via recreation.gov. They do have limited tickets daily and the tickets are released the day PRIOR. So if you plan on going to the top on a Saturday then tickets will be released around 10:30am EST and YOU MUST BE QUICK or be prepared to show up early at the monument center at 8am.
I like walking/biking around the area. Very nice area.
It was a lot of fun to go on a clear cold day. The views were great. The people were friendly. The elevator worked no problem.
The Washington Monument is currently closed until September 19, 2019 for repairs that will modernize the elevator and increase long-term reliability and safety. Please check the National Park Services website for updates before you plan.Built to honor George Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States, the Washington Monument was once the tallest building in the world at just over 555 feet. The monument to America’s first president still holds the title of world’s tallest stone structure and obelisk. Maintained by the National Park Service, the Washington Monument is located on the center of the National Mall between the U.S. Capitol and Lincoln Memorial. The easiest way to get to the monument is by taking the Metro. The two closest Metro stops are Federal Triangle and Smithsonian, both on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. If traveling by bus, take DC Circulator’s National Mall route or ride Metrobus routes 32, 34 or 36. If driving, visitor parking is available on Ohio Drive, between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. Note that street parking is often limited near the National Mall.
What a great place to visit in Washington DC, the tour of the Washington monument was wonderful. An incredible place to learn history about the first president of the states. Great view.
You need to get q free ticket from the visitors center to go up to the top. Be there by 7:30 am to ensure you a spot. Time slots run out fast and tickets run out quickly!
One word: very beautiful. While we travel there, they closed monument for repair elevator. So, we miss chance to go top and look around DC. But still it is beautiful place to visit and explore around dc. Hope they have already fixed this and reopened for public. I have visited twice but both time I was unlucky to have to opportunity to ride to the top. I wish always to go to the top and see that view, but I don’t get chance to go there recently. Such an iconic monument to walk by and see. Oh yeah, there’s limited food store and truck available so make sure you have enough diet before visit there. You can see it from all over DC and on the tip of Virginia. Its a spectacle especially at night. In weekend and holidays this area will is very crowded so be prepared to share space. Make sure someone can bump you accidentally and you also so be easy with public. Absolutely don’t forget to mark this place to your visiting list while you are planning for visit United State of America. White house, Capital building and other hearts of us capital all around here. And you also make plane to visit many museums they are around here.
The tallest monument in DC. Such an amazing sight. My 7 year old just had to see this. We have a cell phone tower in Jackson ms that is a replica of the monument so it was nice to see the real deal
Definitely one of the most iconic buildings in the world. Stands as a unique symbol dedicated to the first president of the United States. You can feel the presence of history when you are near it.Even though its visible from everywhere in the DC metro area, quite a different experience to see it up close.
We did not go up in the Monument. I hear it is worth doing, though. Lunch from one of the plethora of food trucks nearby ran about $40 for burgers, fries and drinks for four. Very tasty, tho, and better than the $72 cold sandwiches and salad we had at the Museum of Natural History cafe.
This impressive monument can be seen from almost every other nearby monument. I wish it had longer hours of operation, there is clearly a demand. You can walk right up to it, though from the outside.Other than having more accessible hours, it could be about 8 feet taller. But, otherwise a great feature of the DC area.
Great view! Definitely suggest going to the top! The park rangers are super friendly and theres really neat info about the monument on the level below the top
Great time ... visited during the kite festival. The place was pack with people and kids. A lot of fun. Many tangled kite but still awesome time. Everything around is nice and clean. For a quick bite you can stop by the carts. Also, if you visit DC you can find a lot of souvenirs to buy. Recommend for all ages.
To lay on the benches and look up the side is an amazing view. A must do!!
Great place to visit while touring historical monuments in DC. Easy access to many other monuments via walking or biking. There are bikes to rent easily for your tour.
Thanks For Letting us having a grear View
This a beautiful monument, centrally located. You can ride to the top, once you understand the significance, you will be amazed. It feels so bold yet calm. Bring your walking shoes and look all the way around
Must to visit. Wonderful views on different part of city (500 foot level). I recommend book ticket before or you should take it very early in the morning, in other cases u can not go inside :)
Sad but this place is temporary closed till 2019.to honor the first president of USA, the monument was built, and it is world tallest stone structure too.few places in dc are known to everyone like capitol building- Lincoln memorial-white house and this Washington monument. this is in same national mall zone, in one straight line with capitol and Lincoln memorial. its walking distance from the capitol. while coming to dc, you can see this monument from miles away. the best pic one can get is from Lincoln memorial where the reflection of monument you can see in the reflective pool. that is an awesome view, especially at sunset time. night view of this monument is amazing.
Beautiful, world known stone monument and whats even more amazing it there is no iron/steel substructure. It is only made of stone. Great stone craftsmanship.
Excellent views of DC, must get tickets online to go but definitely worth!
Such an amazing and beautiful monument, this monument can be seen from afar and brings a sense of power and inspiraron. A little history on the obelisk. The obelisk is a sign of power and the sun god used back in the ancient time of Egypt. They would put these symbols over graves to protect them in the afterlife.
Finally after long time I see the best view in town. Short line at the tickets office starting around 8am, located right next to the Washington monument, dont be late and Dont Miss the Great View in The Capitol
I particularly enjoy where the builders began using different blocks, about 1/3 of the way from the ground.
Very tall monument built in honor of George Washington. Building stands tall and proud and can be seen from a great distance. Was an honor to see it up close and to take pictures. Too bad we werent allowed to go in as it was closed at the time. We still had fun visiting places around.
Make sure you take pics from a far and in direct sunlight. It looks white that way. It looks greyish if you look at it from close up and without sunlight. Its a nice moument that looks great close up and from far, not sure what else youd at the moument.
It was a pretty park. There were a lot of people but it was nice to see.
If you are visiting DC as I did in October 2019 then this is a must visit. Took the elevator to the top and got some great views of the city. A great piece of American heritage.
