It is about 4 miles round trip and there are a few signs along the way. Trail is not too exciting, mostly loose sand, but there are some interesting features in the sandstone along the way and the arch is worth seeing! The kids had lots of fun in the sand and building cairns with stones along the way.

Was a nice hike, lots of sand like walking a beach. The arch area was a nice place to rest and take pics.

Its a great little hike. Though it can be tricky to find your way. Use all trails or something like that. Once you get to the end of the trail it is up above you at about your 1 or 2 oclock. There is a slight climb up if you want to get close. There is about a mile of sand to slog through, but worth it to get there. You can see/ photo it from multiple angles if you are willing to climb a bit.

Great hike about 5 miles round trip. Expect 2 miles of riverbed sand and no shade.. not the best hike on a hot day.

This is an fun family hike. Its about 1.5 miles from the main trail head one way, West of the I-15 by Washington City now know as the Brio Community. This hike is all in the sand so be prepared to hike. Below are few pictures that helps you get to our local Red Cliff Desert Reserve Elephant Arch.

Enjoyable hike in Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.Distance: 4 miles round tripHiking time: 1.5 hours (+ extra 20-30 mins stopping to enjoy views/arch)Difficulty: fairly easy/flat/family-friendlyNote: You drive on a paved road to Brio neighborhood/development in St George, then you will be on a dirt road. The road takes you as far as Mill Creek Trailhead and then there is a locked gate for authorized vehicles only. So you need to park and hike from here. You hike 0.31 miles on Mill Creek Trail, a sandy service road, before taking a right, heading NE, on Bone Wash Trail. The first 0.5 miles of Bone Wash is also a service road, it is sandy, but fairly compact to hike on. Once you reach 0.88 miles (for me it was 18 mins in) the trail goes from a service road into a sandy wash (hiking boots would work well). You hike in the sandy wash, and will come to an open area with lots of Cairns (stacked rocks), after this the turn off to Elephant Arch trail will be on your right (NE). I was 1.46 miles (35 mins in) at this point. Youll hike 0.4 miles on Elephant Arch trail and reach the area just below the arch at about 1.86 miles (it took me about 45 mins one way). The red rocks are beautiful. I took a photo pointing to where the elephant arch is from the last trail sign just before the arch. Hope that helps. Enjoy your hike.Note: very little shade during the hike, so sun hat recommended :)

Easy trail for beginners. Compact dirt at first then the most of it is through a sandy wash. Make sure to stop and look at the map so you dont veer off the correct trail better yet snap a picture of it.

Fun simple hike. Not a ton of shade but it was really cool to see all the rock features. Youre walking in a wash for most of the time. My family enjoyed it.

Great hike in Southern Utah. It is very easy to get to the trailhead and it is close to the city, but once youre over the hill you feel like you are a world away. The trail is well marked for the most part. The worst thing about the hike is that much of it is in a dried river bottom and youre trudging through deep sand. It is difficult to reach the elephant with young children because of this. Older children and teenagers can accomplish this hike.

The pictures posted do it justice. The entire trail is through a sandy wash. You could almost do this entire hike barefoot in the sand. Next time I will leave the hiking shoes behind.

Its sort of a tough hike even though the trail seems relatively short. Thats because the part of the trail involves deep fine sand, making it difficult to walk. Also shades are few and far in between so bring adequate sun protection because if youre hiking in the summer the desert sun is relentless. While the arch is pretty it doesnt have great angles for an excellent photo imo.The trail is only semi kid friendly. Heat is the enemy here. You can get to dirt parking lot via a dirt road with any car to within about two miles of the arch. No need for 4×4.

The best part about this hike is how close it is to St. George and the awesome arch that does actually look like an elephant. The hike is pretty sandy as you are in a wash most of the time though so be prepared for that.

It is a pretty difficult hike for the reward of the arch. The walk is pretty much sand the entire way. It takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs there and back. If it’s a new hike that you haven’t done before it’s probably gonna be a one time thing for you.

Really cool little arch! It actually does look like its moniker. The kids loved this hike. It wasnt too hard, and the perfect length for them. Definitely wouldnt want to do in the middle of summer, as there is very little shade. It was perfect midwinter.

A nice in town hike. The trail starts just down the street from Brio, a new development in Washington. The 1st part of the hike is on a dirt road until you get to the dry riverbed. Its a Sandy hike so make sure to wear some grippy shoes. Theres lots of footprints in the way so you wont get lost & be careful for all the illegal trail signs. The most strenuous part of the hike is right below the elephant arch... You have to scale a small part of the rock to reach the base of the trunk

Nice hike! The arch looks very much like an elephant head. From the end of pavement the arch is just over 6 miles round-trip but you can shave a couple of miles off driving down the dirt road. A good part of the hike is in deep sand which is good exercise.

Not my favorite hike, but if you are just looking to get out and stay fairly close this one works well. It is dog and kid friendly. Most of the hike is walking on a dirt road and through a sandy wash. It is about 1.9 miles from the parking lot at the gate to the arch. When it is hot bring lots of water and wear sunscreen. Watch for snakes! If you are having a hard time finding it, drive up main Street in Washington, pass the four way stop all the way up the dirt road to the trailhead at the gates. Hike in for about a quarter mile to the bone wash turn off, follow that road for another roughly .6 miles until you drop into the wash, keep going straight. You will reach a fork that to the left bone wash continues and to the right is elephant arch. There will be a sign for elephant arch. Go right. There should be more signage for the arch once you get to this point. It will be about .9 miles from the start of the bone wash to the arch. A round-trip is about 3.8 miles and 1.9 each way.

I love this hike. Like others have said, the Elephant Arch is not the easiest thing to find and the trail is not well marked, there is one part where you are just walking through a sandy wash, and heat can be a brutal factor. However, thats Saint George for you. If you didnt realize that before you go on this hike, Im sorry but please do not blame the hike. It really is a fun hike of reasonable length. The Elephant Arch does exist. It is just tucked away on the rocky hill. If you are prepared for the heat, have a good attitude, and arent bothered by a bit of searching, this will be an enjoyable hike.

The kids and i walked for over an hour from 9ish am. Did not see marker(marker were faded, too) for the trail leading to the arch. We gave up and started walking back to the car. Maybe Google map were bad because we stay straight according to Google map. Would have been nice to actually see the arch.

We walked 4 Miles there and there was absolutely nothing. Do not waste your time. Me and my 12 year old son are sitting on the side of the trail waiting for my husband and older son to bring the car which youre not even supposed to do because were literally about to have a heat stroke. Its 90 degrees outside right now. August 18th. Because the elephant Arch does not exist. When we were walking it says you have arrived at your destination and you cant see anything for miles. Thanks for killing us out here in the desert.
