One of my favorite museums in DC so far. I really enjoyed their exhibition, “A Right to the City”, which shows how residents in DC have been displaced by urban renewal projects and how they have fought back for their interests and needs through different forms of activism. You get to really appreciate DC’s history and community. Very community oriented and definitely worth a visit!!
My First Time Back There Since 2011 and After The Remodeling. It Was Go To See The Shaw Area. Havent Lived There In The Area Since About 1985. And Seeing The Historical Era Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Riding Down 7th Street NW In A Parade and Also On Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE.It Was An Awesome Trip For Sure!! And Seeing An Old Street Public Phone Thats Extinct Now!! But One Thing I Would Like To Recommend Is That The Museum Please Put Some Disinfectant Wipes By That Phone Cause As I Did Without Thinking I Picked Up The Receiver And Listened To The Recording As I Know Hundreds Of People Have Done Before Me And After. But All In All It Was Awesome!!
This is a Smithsonian museum so admission is always free. Its small compared to its sister museums so a visit shouldnt last more than an hour. The exhibits were eye-opening and informative, highlighting issues of displacement, segregation, and discrimination faced by DCs marginalized communities, and how they and their allies organized to tackle and overcome those issues. Its really stunning how all of these happened right where the nations seat of power is.This place is out of the way for most visitors, especially for those without a car. It would be nice if there was a shuttle service from the National Mall (where most of the Smithsonians are) to this museum.
This Museum is a off the main path amazing find in Southeast, DC! I remember as a young child visiting the Anacostia Museum at a different location. Fast forward to 2019 and you will find a new location with lots of history hidden away. When approaching the building you will notice the very nice landscaping around the facility. The inside was very clean and has lots of deep history that will open your mind to the past into the future. Before there was an African American Museum there was the Anacostia Museum. A neighborhood museum that was originally the Carver Theater. John Kinard was appointed director of the museum in June 1967. He was a pastor and activist during the Civil Rights Movement, Kinard was heavily involved in the Anacostia neighborhood, His vision was to make sure that the young people of the neighborhood were involved in the creation of the museum. Fast forward to today and its still holding roots in Southeast, DC and in 1987 was moved to Fort Stanton. In 1995, the Anacostia Museum became the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture. It was to serve as the location for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This is a great find if you want to visit the birth from a neighborhood museum to modern day museum under the Smithsonian umbrella. Ill visit again soon to see even more scheduled updates and changes.
For the subject matter they did a great job with the presentation. My family and I stopped here on our way home from vacation and sadly didnt have a lot of time to really soak it all in. The main theme though was not lost and I love that theyre getting Gen Z involved.
Great information and pictures! Very infor.ative about urban renewal.
The museum looks great, a really ni e job on the remodel.
Always a great place for learning. Small but can enjoy a entire exhibit in one day. Always quite and has a beautiful outdoor setting for a picnic. Changes exhibit about every 3 to 6 months. Great for Afrikans in America to experience. Fredrick Douglass house is close by. A must see! Help to keep these places alive in our community.
A great and wonderful display the growth of Washington DC.
Attended a Gardening Event here with Derick Thomas as the presenter. Enjoyed the chefs who shared recipes with the attendees using fresh herbs and goods from the garden at this location. Network and met people who were also involved with learning how to care for plants and herbs. This was a GREAT EVENT!!!!!! I enjoyed this event.
Unexpected trip here when the National African American museum was way too busy. It had a really cool exhibit abt urban development gone wrong in various D.C. hoods. Its only 1 level, but laid out well and packed with information and videos. Donations accepted. Very satisfying experience.
Very Excellent & Nice Place!!
The Anacostia Community Museum may be the smallest of the Smithsonians but its the first federally funded community museum in the country. Located in SE DC in Fort Stanton, its often overlooked since its the farthest from the National Mall and not near a Metro. Despite this, if you live in DC, its worth for these reasons:1) Its a community museum and highlights the marginalized in our city and advocates for community, advocacy, and identity. They invite you to interact with the each exhibit asking yourself about how you define freedom and identity. If anything, it makes you reflect and think.2) It only takes 15-30 minutes to go through so if you need a quick trip, its for you.3) The building is beautiful and there are a few murals inside that are striking.4) Theres a nice park next door with picnic tables to enjoy the outdoors.5) Its free and they host some great events also for free.If youre a tourist and short on time in DC, skip this one. if youre a local, visit this place at least once!
Great guest, exhibits and fun. I feel blessed to have this museum in the community.
Ward Eight Southeast DC is honored to have a branch of the Smithsonian in our community. I have enjoyed the projects, programs and meetings with delight and great interest..
Amazing tour that is incredibly rich with DCs history. I personally learned a lot about the many transformations some of our historic neighborhoods have experienced.
Needs more wifi strength.
This place is a hidden treasure. I happened upon it and was glad I went inside. Seeing and reading about early DC and Anacostia was enlightening and humbling. I am 3rd generation Washingtonian and I rendered speechless by what I didnt know. So educational, so needed!
This museum is a gem in the neighborhood! Over the years, we have learned so much about life in DC and connections to people in the Caribbean from visits to this museum. Its a mystery to me why it is never packed with people when we go. There is definitely a community vibe when you step inside, the staff (primarily the guards), make you feel so welcomed with their helpfulness and courtesy.
Tucked away Smithsonian away from all other museums.
I had a wonderful time. Everyone there was very helpful and being in a wheelchair they were the best. I will be back there.
Went there for a cook out on the grounds it was really nice
Nice place never crowded and great staff
Great place to visit and nice it is located right in the community so locals get to see it regularly.
This is a really nice museum. FREE. They have events here every once and a while. It is away from the other museums. They have new exhibits every few months.
Excellent exhibit in a beautiful location! Loved it all!
Lovely gem in DCs final frontier.
Great history of the Barry farms and Anacostia area
Beautiful, educational, inspirational. This museum was built to get the community involved in their own history. So grateful I got to see it in person
This is a great place to look into the history of the Anacostia and DC cultures; inspiring for tourism
What a great day to enjoy this hidden gem. Who knew this museum existed. Great spot to go to enjoy yet another peice of history.
First of all, this museum is a part of the Smithsonian brand and it is put, way out of the way in a near impossible location to reach, that is, via mass transit. Having said this, the staff there were engaging and welcoming and going there on a weekday or weekend is time well spent. There was an exhibit regarding my familys surname (not sure if its my family) but the staff when they saw my name, treated me like a rock star! Go there, its free and it has....information!
Nice location, though a big hill on the walk from metro. Facility looks nice, new exhibit going in now.
Hidden gem of a museum. Great way to explore east side of city. Connected to Fredrick Douglas house by trails
Nice space. community groups were meeting in the conference room when we visited. However was struck by the lack of information on Anacostis.
Good family fun a start up for a walk through history for its part of the Smithsonian museum
Very well staffed and organized.
Im so glad that a different one has opened.
Small but impressive! I enjoyed my visit, as well as my two toddlers, which was surprising. The exhibits were colorful and engaging for them while informative and nostalgiac for me!
Excellent. I spent about 45 minutes there and I learned so much! I will certainly return!
It lays out the history so that you understand the current atmosphere of DC.
I Think this was an Amazing visit and highly recommend this exhibit for all to see. VERY POWERFUL.
The hidden gem of all Smithsonians. Want to experience DC while learning about it, this is the museum.
I learned so much!! Currently displaying the Latinex Exhibition and its awesome. A must see!! And its free. Go do it.
Very interesting and memorable
I thought it was a very nice little tour Id like to see more African-American pictures in there however this is what its supposed to be was very nice
It was an awesome performance!! Id love to see much more of these types of performances in the future!
Is a small place compare to the big museums in Washington. Is worth the travel if you interested in it.The shocking panoramics on the streets is amazing!!
Fun place for a community Museum. Provides shuttle from metro stop to the museum.
Small but beautiful. More about Black peoples contribution to Washington, DC
Did not honor eventbrite ticketing and switched to first come first serve seating for viewing of what happened to chocolate city.
Got interesting stories from the staff.
Rich in culture and knowledge!!
Wait a few more months to visit, it is being remodeled.
I enjoyed the program I went to see; the staff are very friendly. I will visit there again.
Excellent Smithsonian museum off the beaten track. Free shuttle service make the location easily accessible and parking is free.
Great feel to this museum.. staff very pleasant
Super helpful staff, extremely well put together exhibit, in a beautiful space. A top tier Smithsonian Institute and a must stop
Off the beaten path of the rest of the Smithsonian museums. Its a great gem hidden in the great Anacostia neighborhood.
A great little Smithsonian museum in Anacostia. When we went, there was an exhibit about the history of the Anacostia River, and we learned a lot about the origins of the area and DC more generally. Plus, there were several events going on at the museum, and all were invited to participate.
Hidden gem, located in SE Washington, DC. Have enjoyed several educational presentations. Looking forward to attending many more events.
First time there and loved everything about it
This is a family friendly place with great exhibits about DC, cool staff, and educational programming.
Amazing with fun projects I wish you could rate it 1000!!!Air
Great place with all of its idealism and virtues
Great place for a visit but not for a long stay
Had an opportunity to visit the Anacostia Community Museum today, to embrace the exhibit Twelve Years that Shook and Shaped Washington and I was quit impressed with the exhibit. This was my first visit.I enjoyed the entire presentation on display, the colors, the history, the setting was all amazing. I truly envisioned each and every era on display, which assistant me with where Washington, DC was then and where it is now. I must say the curator and the team of people all whom had hands involved nailed it, with the visual presentation.I learned so much about a city that I was born and raised in. I wish I was still an Art Teacher for DCPS, Im sure my students would have enjoyed it, no worries I had an amazing experience for them and most importantly myself. Kudos Kudos Kudos. Thank You Anacostia......
