Its challenging to choose the proper words to describe the depth and richness of Mrs. Posts remarkable collection of art, objets dart, furniture, serving wear, jewelry, porcelain, etc. Whelming is a good start. Her lavish life of society entertaining and a mind boggling global collection is so foreign to me but the presentation of everything, and how close you can get to it, make you realize most of the items are handmade by skilled artisans, so its as much about them as it is her money to buy and display everything. Well worth a visit to experience the mansion and collection, the grounds, outbuildings, etc. of a life unimaginable to most.
Right off Rock Creek Park after the Zoo is this little slice of heaven. If you love gardens, dont miss this gem. The mansion is impressive too. Felt like I was transported. The two women working the gift shop were so kind. Lots of 40-75% sales. The guards shared stories about the place too. Perfect place for a romantic date, even if you just take yourself out!
The District has some of the most interesting and historical places in the country, and this is a lesser known place away from the main attractions down town. The gardens and grounds are some of the most gorgeous cultivated gardens anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic, and I worked at a botanic garden. They also have their own greenhouses and propagation house where they have a very outstanding orchid collection and impressive production space for all of the plants they display in the gardens. That is certainly worth the visit if possible and if you enjoy plants and botany as I do.The inside of the estate has many historical paintings and pieces that are worth visiting and viewing. They charge a small fee for entrance, but it is certainly worth it. I would avoid taking children under the age of 10, as it may not be the most exciting place to visit, but it’s in a gorgeous part of D.C. and is certainly worth it. I would definitely come back again with friends and family when they’re in town, and would recommend to anyone who appreciates high class living of the 20th Century.
This estate is the epitome of the Gilded Age’s white privilege on display. The gardens are a beautiful and serene respite from DC’s hubbub. However, the house is architecturally unprepossessing and Post’s obsession with Russian and French artifacts reflects the crass aesthetics of the American bourgeoisie of her time. Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate is much more charming and personable - not to mention representative of the American Dream’s ability to elevate someone from rags to riches.
Ive lived in the DMW my whole life and sad that I never came here before. I made reservations online and went through the entire exhibit a little under 3 hours. My friend and I hit everything from the greenhouse garden, mansion, estate, cafe, Japanese garden and outside small gardens. Awesome location to take a bunch of photos and even a photo shoot. I noticed a couple of parties had outdoor picnics or just catching some rays from the sun. The location is very easy to navigate around. Grab one of the brochure maps and just follow the directions. The pieces here are timeless and I found myself in awe as I went from room to room. Parking is very easy to find as security will help navigate you. With current Covid conditions you have to book in advance and give yourself about 30-60 minutes between each exhibit if you enjoy taking pictures. The cafe here is no joke. They have gourmet sandwiches, croissants and even frose!
Truly lovely place in DC. Th emansionnitself is a museum full of Russian and French art pieces... and some funny stories generously given by the guards. The gardens are absolutely beautiful. You can bring some blankets and picnic (we even heard a champagne pop) on the grounds. Make reservations ahead of time, and go marvel.
Visit the garden as of 9h30am! Early arrival will offer you access to the gardens without the crowds! Excellent online guided tour you can download on Google Play and Apple Store. Allow about 3 hours: 90 min for the estate, 90 min for the gardens. Café on site sets in fabulous setting. A gem for all Russian enthusiasts or art collectors!Suggested donation of $18 as of summer 2019.
The beautiful Hillwood Estate and grounds are suprisingly quiet and peaceful despite being tucked into the heart of DC. Fans of gardening will enjoy walking through the French and Japanese gardens and through the greenhouses and lawns. History buffs will love the unique blend of collections of French and Russian artifacts along with a private look into Posts fascinating life. Dont miss the tour!
This is truly a beautiful place. Not that many people know about it. It has a gorgeous mansion, lovely gardens, a cafe with very good food with indoor and outdoor seating, and rotating exhibits. And its not expensive to get in. Its great for families. Our young daughter loves it.
Beloved destination ANY time of the year. Relaxing back-drops with one of the most prestigious museums in the world, a first-rate gift shop, food, wonderful new seasonal exhibits and best of all: Sundays are Dog Days! Theyve been guarding your caves for 50,000 years...dont they deserve a trip to the Hilwood on THEIR day too?
Lovely mansion, full or art and history in particular Russian. Make sure you follow a guide so you can relate the artifacts with the history, so it is not about a wealthy family but the history and appreciation of the legacy. If its not Spring time dont expect the garden to be in bloom, but the greenhouse by the mansion have a great variety of orchids. Very relaxing. I gave it four stars because I expected the gardens to be more manicured with clean or clear paths.
Marjorie Merriweather Post lived quite the lavish lifestyle and Hillwood puts it all on display. From the elaborate interiors to the fabulous gardens. Be sure to download the app or use the audio guide. They also have programs and lectures throughout the year for locals. Their temporary exhibits are wonderful as well.
The Russian treasures, good architecture, beautiful garden mean that you should come there together with person you like. You will look to the person only and the Hillwood Museum does the magic from its side...
The gardens are amazing! Proposed to my fiance in the Japanese zen garden and couldnt have been more perfect. The mansion is neat to see but the gardens are really the best part imo. Cant wait until everything else opens back to normal to see the rest!
A perfect place to spend a beautiful day. Whether walking around the grounds, touring the mansion and admiring the exquisite collections, visiting the green house to admire the orchids or having lunch in the cafe, theres always something to look at and admire. I just wish it was easier to get to without a car.
Great place to visit. The mansion is grandiose and full of French and Russian art. It also has the largest Russian royal art collection outside of Russia. It also has a lot of beautiful gardens, my favourite is the Japanese style garden
Beautiful antiques, well-preserved art work and tapestries. Immaculate grounds.
The jewelry and art works from the Russian aristocracy are exquisitely beautiful. The furniture from 17th and 18th century France are a joy. The house is full of wonderful pieces of delicate beauty.
Great mansion with many rooms full of interesting artifacts. Guided tours offered. Beautiful grounds with a variety of garden types, figurines, water. Loads of exotic azaleas and rhododendrons, peak bloom in April. Take your allergy pill and wear comfortable shoes. Cafe with indoor or outdoor seating. Make reservations.
Now is the time to visit this beautiful house and its expansive gardens because there are so few people there youll feel like you own the place. The cutting garden is in full bloom. And dont miss the orchid greenhouse. The cafe is also open so you can have a cool drink to cool off.
We had very nice time visiting. Just one note: one of the tour guides was discussing current state of politics in Russia with a visitor in what sounded like not nice and biased way. 80% of the exhibited items came from Russia. I would recomend that stuff at least would be respectful and keep attention to artistic and historical values, educating visitors and leaving negative personal opinions about Russia to personal time. I feel it is important. Sorry, 3 stars
Even in the dead of winter there is beauty here. I walked around for a bit and took the one hour tour of the mansion. Such rich history. Stopped by the café for lunch the Borscht soup was so delicate and filling, the salad was fresh, very well tossed with olive oil and enough for two. The tuna melt sandwich is the best I have ever tasted. I would love to be here in spring or summer to experience the flowers full bloom. Definitely worth visiting while in DC.
This is a wonderful museum with an amazing collection of imperial Russian artifacts. I been to Hillwood several time and I love going back ever time. It’s a great place to spend a day. Best of all it’s incredibly affordable. Online there is a suggested donation of $15, $18 on-site.
Really beautiful place... i loved the greenhouse! when we visited, we spent a lot of our time walking around outside and exploring the gardens :-)the mansion was interesting too, but im not very big on history, so i didnt try a guided tourthey had a photography exhibit going on in one of the buildings at the time of our trip, so thats worth checking out too!
I had randomly searched for unique things to do in DC to get away from the normal city life and Hollywood Estate happened to come up on one of the websites. After visiting for a few hours, I can safely say this place is just amazing and takes me back to Europe. It is just filled with old French/Russian collections and the entire estate is just exquisite.Highly recommend - phone pictures dont do it justice.
Great place for a family picnic. Beautiful gardens and very friendly staff. Make sure you book your times for the mansion and exhibits in advance.
Lovely grounds, interesting snapshot of a piece of history, and not overrun with tourists
Such a wonderful gem and an amazing history. A cultural treasure that should not be missed. Enjoying another lovely day in the gardens.
Amazing collection! Great Russian Winter Fest, so much fun, great dancing, music, crafts.
Beautiful home and gardens! While I was there they had a stunning photography exhibit showcasing the work of Alfred Eisenstaedt of Life Magazine fame. The entry is free or pay what you want. Parking is free and very close to the house. I went when I was going through a very sad time and it took my mind off my problems and gave me a peaceful and relaxing space to be. A treasure of DC, to be sure.
One of the most beautiful places in DC. A true hidden gem of the area. The grounds of simply breath taking.
An extremely beautiful place. The gardens are gorgeous, and the house is spectacular. This spot definitely transports the visitors back in time, into an era of beauty and luxury. Stunning exhibits and interiors.
This place is one of my favorite place in dc!!
Wonderful home and museum pieces. Very interesting place tucked away in DC, like its way out in the woods, but you can see the Washington monument out the 2nd floor window.
Great afternoon out. Well worth the visit
A beautiful home and garden with a lot of artwork and artifacts from Ms. Posts private collection. We took the garden tour with the head gardener and it was so interesting! Then we took the mansion tour. Our docent Lara had the ost grogeous Russian accent and she was extremely about the home and the many pieces. I especially loved the throwback kitchen and bathroom which were of course very modern for the time. Look at my pics to get a feel.
Wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Lovely gardens, interesting dwellings, personal art collection, and nice cafe.
Beautiful gardens and flowers. The food was wonderful in the quaint restaurant. Take your time and enjoy the day!
Beautiful estate with lots to explore. Our kids enjoyed it as well. Cost is minimal since they only ask for donations.staff were friendly and accommodate our large group of seven.
Beautiful gardens set away from the hustle & bustle of DC. House is filled with Russian & French treasures. Take the free tours - definitely help explain what everything is!
Climbing is what I remember most, inside and out. April 11 is a little too early for lush gardens, but it was very interesting. Amazing what unlimited money can do, LOL.
Beautiful estate with breathtaking, tranquil gardens. Amazing number of collectables. Restaurant on site was wonderful. Attentive staff and delicious food with vegetarian options. A must see if visiting DC.
Beautiful went here because i was stressing about driving around and needed to stop somewhere due to the craziness but ended up spending hours looking at the mansion
This is a great place to visit, the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. Interesting gardens and grounds. Well worth the price of admission.
We visited the lovely Hillwood gardens despite the rainy day. We especially enjoyed the japanese garden & waterfall and orchids in the greenhouse. Everything was beautifully maintained and worth seeing.Since our time was limited we decided to only tour outside for a stroll, and admission is by donation (They suggest $18 per person for the fulltour so we decreased that). Next time we will return for the full tour when time permits.
If you need any help deciding what going big looks like, this is the place. Everything has a purpose and is perfected. Take the audio tour. Its so informative but at the same time ask the security guards for info. They know some great secrets. (Ask about the snooze room).
A magical hidden DC gem. Today we saw the gardens. Next time - the mansion!
Lovely mansion, out buildings and grounds. Priceless art and other collectables on display. Reservations required to visit.
Bought tickets online and spent Sunday afternoon exploring. Awesome gardens.
Loved it! Beautiful home and gardens. Interesting lady. Well worth the visit.
Lovely mansion museum with gardens. Very very cool, locals don’t know about it.
A beautiful mansion and gardens. Interesting exhibits, extensive Russian collection. A perfect place to visit to explore beautiful pieces of art and gorgeous gardens.
Beautiful place...
This place is absolutely amazing, I recommend this place to anyone heading to DC, I have been to a ton of museums and gardens in the DC area and this is my favorite!! It is absolutely beautiful and should be included on any trip!!
Super fun! Beautiful house and gardens!
Grand estate with great art and historical ornaments and lovely gardens too
Incredible collection in the mansion. Enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the cafe. Reservations recommended.
Gorgeous mansion with a wonderful guided our self guided (audio) tour. Some stunning artifacts and art inside, including a jeweled crown, precious chalices, and a collection of Fabrege eggs. Also lots if very interesting and striking portraits. It was well worth the ~15 minute walk from the metro.
Beautiful estate! So pretty I decided to propose girl friend here, she said yes! The mansion is so beautiful, with so many paintings, gold items and expensive furniture. Definatly the lap of luxuary. The staff was super friendly here, showing us things on the map. There are many gardens that surround the mansion, including a dog graveyard, and japanese garden. There was also another building featuring faberge eggs. Such an idealist spot in a quiet place in DC backing up to the park. Free parking included with pass.
The home and gardens are worth a visit. The staff here are wonderful and very engaging. The unique items here make it one of a kind and the audio guide makes the experience immersive. We will definitely be visiting again when the gardens are in bloom.
It was a very educational experience. The docents are knowledgeable and the tours are very organized. Also ate at the cafe and the food was fresh and delicious. We made a reservation prior to our arrival and that seemed wise since it was a bit crowded due to holiday visitors. Spent about fours hours total. Watched an explanatory video, did two guided tours and wandered on our own. Parking was free and adjacent to visitors center.
This place is gorgeous. We went on winter before the closing time and they were so kind to explore a few minutes without paying. It was a short review but definitely enough to have an idea of the beauty of the property. This place needs to be visited with enough time specially during spring and the fall.
Elegance if a bygone era, this is the best house museum and gardens Ive seen in ages. Loved the cafe, too.
Hidden behind all of the townhomes of Washington DC, is a spectacular estate owned by the late Marjorie Merriweather Post called Hillside. There is a small fee to visit the home, grounds, and building. She was a renowned collector of spectacular art and treasures. Expect to spend the whole day there. It is truly a site seers dream.
A place to enjoy a beautiful day, or explore the intricate history of Marjorie Merriwhether Post. The gardens and greenhouse are absolutely breathtaking, especially when the flowers are in bloom. I’m not too much of a decor and china person, but if that’s what you’re into, you’re going to have the time if your life.
The Hillwoood Estate, Museum & Gardens has a donation based entrance fee. Going to the compound of the museum gives visitors to take a break from the usual/common destination museums in the DC area. The estates and houses around the compound are also awe-inspiring to see. The curators of the property, however, have to maintain better care of the gardens and the surrounding premises of Hillwoods.
What a beautiful little park with amazing gardens surrounding the big house. You can enter for free but a donation is appreciated
Beautiful place. This was my second visit. Bought my membership. Lovely in the winter with some beautiful decorated Christmas trees. Russian art collections are unbelievable. My summer visit included the gardens. Wow! Can’t wait to come back in the spring.
One of my favorite places to visit in DC. The perfect spot for lovers of history and horticulture. Great place to bring family and friends especially if you are tired of going to all the touristy places like the mall and monuments. This place is one of the must sees in DC. Try to visit when the flowers are blooming especially the azaellas.
The must important Rusian colection out of Rusia, eonderfull and historic pices of fine arts in a wonderfull house and gardens, a must in D.C.
Very nice. Beautiful house full of gorgeous displays.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for DC. Absolutely fabulous house and grounds. Suggested donation of $18 is worth it. Took a docent led tour of the Mansion. Hillary was great! Pointing out tiny details the average eye would miss. After the tour we walked around thr building on own. We packed a picnic and the visitor center lent us a picnic blanket. Free parking and there is a cafe on the property.
The most beautiful collection I have ever seen in D.C..
Love the gardens, exhibitions and the historic style in details of the interior design and architecture. You can feel like going back in time. The cafeterias outdoor space was very cold for autumn but Im glad we got seated inside after waiting for a while to our party. Just make sure to do reservation for a table indoors!
Very cool estate. So many beautifully detailed pieces. Grounds are meticulously kept. Japanese garden was beautiful.
Tha place is beautiful but i reserved one day before
Lovely gardens and greenhouse and beautiful mansion filled with incredible decorative and fine Arts of 18th C France and imperial Russia in the 1800s and 1900s. Furniture, paintings, Faberge eggs, icons and CHINA! Plus there is always a special exhibit in the Adirondack building. Most recently (July 2019) it was the photos of Life photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. Free easy self park, nice pricey cafe, and giftshop. Dont miss the Japanese style garden. Nice every season. I visit at least twice a year.
This is the former estate, or one of the former estates, of Marjorie Post who was quite a collector and socialite. Her dad was one of the founders of General Foods in which she was an active participant on the board. She was an active collector of decorative arts even before she married her third husband who was the ambassador to the Soviet Union, which is when she started her Russian period. The mansion and gardens are impeccably maintained. The collections and the gardens are exquisite. The docents were very knowledgeable and a pleasure to listen to for the hour tour (each) for each the mansion and gardens. Our mansion tour was led by a tall, gray-haired gentleman (?Len) who was excellent; I do not recall the name of the garden docent but she was just as good. We had lunch at their cafe where the service was attentive and prompt, the food was great, and it was all reasonably priced. The lunch was better than at some pretentious in-vogue restaurant in the city. I will look forward to returning.
What a cool place! Fabulous wealth on the inside beautiful gardens on the outside. Could spend hours here. And the admission is very reasonable: pay what you will, basically.
Enormous collection of Russian art, jewelry, and china. Beautiful estate. Great for a day out, though may not be good for kids.
Fantastic place to visit. So much to see. Very informative guided tour of the house.
Our idyll in town. We are so glad we joined as a Member so we can just go and walk around the lavish gardens whenever we want. The cutting garden alone is amazing. Lots of nooks to explore and seating places to have a quiet chat or read a book.
Amazing place to picnic. Open during COVID.
A piece of marvel, a hidden gem. Place with a really nice atmosphere, full of Washington DC history and Russian czar history. Marvelous artefacts of the Russian history. The mansion is nice, gardens beautiful. Take time and when possible ask for a guide. Take make the tour more vivid and interactive, add more layers and detail to the place and its history.
Amazing! Beutiful collection and inspiring atmosphere!
Loved Hillwood.
This is my second visit to Hillwood. The last time was in 2013. The boxwood in the panterre that was planted then has matured. The Dacha was closed this time. The greenhouse has some beautiful plants. The special faberge exhibit is well worth seeing. The audio guide is free with admission and well done. The Cafe serves sit down and express if you prefer to eat in the tent. The ricotta gnocchi was a bit dense but the deviled egg trio and hazelnut pan a cotta are excellent. The gift shop sells unusual items such as fascinators and wraps. It is 17 minute walk from Van Ness metro station. The Japanese Garden is lovely.
Magnificant estate with a beautiful mansion, great art collection and peaceful gardens. The docents are excellent.
This place is a hidden gem. Wow! We took the subway and then walked all the way up there but it was worth it. The gardens were just breathtaking and so was the Mansion. The staff is really helpful and friendly. I would say - skip the White House and come here instead.
I did enjoy the experience, but I think the entry fee is a little expensive for what they are offering.
I never heard of Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden or of Marjorie Post. This place is breathtaking between the gardens, the art collection and the beautiful estate I was so pleased. I think that this place is underrated or deliberately hidden. Nonetheless I do find it sad. I am not trying to place blame on any entity but I stumbled upon this place because I saw it on Google maps. I studied history and I naturally gravitate to museums whenever I travel. Ms. Post was a fascinating woman and my tour guide was amazing. Her knowledge of Ms. Posts life and background, Russian and French loyalty and the art pieces were amazing. I think the next time I visit D.C. with friends, I will suggest this place. I never saw a Faberge egg in my entire life and learned about their existence in high school. My only regret was not coming to the museum earlier to explore the estate, gardens and the gift shop. Thanks to all of the warm, friendly and attentive staff!
Such a happy place. I love walking the grounds and learning about the many Russian artifacts that fill the estate. Always a pleasure to visit Hillwood.
This museum is absolutely gorgeous! If you like history or just beautiful places you should visit here. The museum is family friendly. There were several groups having picnics. I experienced a tea service there and the museum cafe was exquisite. I will be going back with friends as soon as I can set up a time & date.
Such beauty! Beautuful artifacts, gardens and home.
This is a wonderful museum with an amazing collection of imperial Russian artifacts. I been to Hillwood several time and I love going back ever time. It’s a great place to spend a day. Best of all it’s incredibly affordable. Online there is a suggested donation of $15, $18 on-site.
Awesome place! So much history and so many interesting things! Loved it!
Biggest collection of Russia artifacts outside of Russia. Simply amazing piece of history. A must if you like history and/or art.
