Very surprised with how large this area was. It was also very informative. The water wasn’t working at the moment but I’m sure if it was it would of been even more beautiful than it already was. Very kid friendly and just a short walk to the Martin Luther King Memorial and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
Honestly one of the best memorials along the mall. It manages to convey both the values and the specific policy decisions that FDR pursued in each of his four terms, and the symbolism with the water fountains is brilliant (Google to learn more if you havent already). I thought the sculptures were well-executed, but I still appreciated the decision to not fill the large reflective spaces with a huge amount of text or a bunch of different statutes. The spaces feels like a place to reflect rather than a place to absorb a bunch of FDR facts and move on, and I think that approach to memorial design is appropriate given FDRs stature as one of our countrys greatest presidents. Highly recommended, worth going out of your way to see.
A spectacular monument and memorial and in a beautiful setting. A great space to wander through with plenty of small spaces for thought, reading, and reflection. The space is very focused on telling a story of the man and the moments he lived in and less on being monumental in the traditional sense (i.e forcing you to stare up at a massive statue or tiny quotations high on a wall). One of my favorite early morning spots in the city to visit.
The Roosevelt Memorial was a great place to visit and walk back in time through his four terms of presidency. each term that he served has a significant statues and different quotes by him. It is a very unique Memorial to take your time at and its great to visit during the night when all the lights that lighting up the different functions at this Memorial. There is a gift shop where you can get your National Park passport book stamped and buy memorabilia about this president and additional items. Its a very spacious Memorial, strollers are welcome as well. The Jefferson Memorial and the Martin Luther King memorial are located one on each side.
Interesting memorial to FDR. Make sure to start at the Northern side to walk through and experience all of his terms in chronological order. While visiting none of the fountains and water features were working due to massive flooding, so it didnt have the same awe that it may be in future years.
A rather disappointing monument for what I consider to be the greatest President in the nations history. There is none of the grandure of the Lincoln or Jefferson Memorials and one would think a President who served four terms, and led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II would have merited a large museum to house many displays exploring the innovations of the New Deal and the major historic events that provided the context for FDRs presidency. Worth visiting, but not doing justice to its subject.
History, culture, beauty. When faced with dark times, Americans worked to make each others lives better with both law and deeds.
This is a must visiting place on the National Mall. It is an outdoor memorial and next to tidal basin and wonderful view of Washington monument. Lot of paid vehicle parking on Ohio drive. Lot of quotations to read and great place for kids to enjoy the park and greenery. Nice to walk around tidal basin to visit other memorials in a loop.
Well done memorial best seen at night and when the water is running properly.
Talentedly designed!Truly impressive!Free admission! This spacious memorial consists of four outdoor rooms. One for each term he served. Each room shows the greatest achievements of this wonderful president for that term:during the Great Depression, World War II, etc.Franklin Roosevelt is rated by scholars as one of the three greatest US presidents, along with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.Great memorial dedicated to a great president!
Would love to see it again when the water features are fixed. A great memorial for a remarkable life.
This is a fabulous outdoor exhibit to honor one of the greatest presidents in American history. And also to honor Eleanor.
A amazing memorial that takes you through the terms of possibly the greatest president of all time, it shows how he handled the great depression with his fireside chats, being a friend to the country. You can see the lines of people getting food in the cold and how people suffered during that time. You see a amazingly accurate statue of him in his wheelchair showing that even with a disability you can achieve anything. Another part shows how he handled WW2 and how he saved the world. And of course at the end a statue with him and his dog.
One of the best designed memorials Ive seen. It told a succinct story with minimal text and excellent use of statues. Its probably my favorite stop the entire time Ive been to DC.
Great place for reflection. Very peacefully set and spread out. The fountains are currently not functioning due to a flood in their mechanical room, but everything else is good.
One of my favorite memorials to walk through. There are so many quite that resonant with me regarding current events.
Truly one of the best historical and presidential memorials in Washington DC. Its also the most aesthetically pleasing memorial when the waterfalls are operating. Unfortunately, due to a recent flooding of the pump system, the waterfalls are out of order.
Wow HouseWow one the best place to visit. It looks to much coolEvery where only white colour of house and the grass green colourIt looks to much osmmmI am Indian Tourister. And I like this place very muchHope one day I will live in that houseAnd the interior of that house is omgReally it looks too much osmmI whsh to buy it but its too much costly.I recommend my every friend to visit that placeBest
Took a night tour and visit this monument area, really nice
This memorial is amazing and great place to walk and to talk photos! It’s an American history!!
Normally this monument is nice but when I went this time all of the water fixtures were off and broken. The are a focal point of this monument so I was disappointed this time around.
By far my favorite of the memorials! I loved all the wisdom contained in the quotes. They are definitely words I wish our country still lived by.
Due to the winter of 2019 flooding the water is not at the memorial due to the pumps being ruined. The construction to fix the pump house is underway and should be fixed by next year. The monument itself is massive and amazing. A great trilobite to a great US president and his wife!
I visited on a Saturday afternoon recently and there were very few people around. Its a very moving memorial and a great place to be outside while social distancing.
This is one of the better Memorials and its only a stones throw from the main squeezes... Just cross the street from the Lincoln Memorial to enjoy lovely waterfalls, beautiful sculptures, and excellent river views. Its a well kept secret from most weekend tourists.
It was great. We really had a great time. The fountains and pools are under maintenance, so they werent running. I am sure that would make it spectacular. But we still enjoyed it.
An inspiring monument, a testament to the good and caring leader FDR, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was President from 1933 - 1945.He led the USA through very trying and difficult times. FDR was elected during the Great Depression through the US role in WWII telling to defeat the Nazis and Hitler. He started many programs we now take for granted and infrastructure and buildings that were built during his tenure are still used today through the WPA and the CCC and Social Security.
Our visit stoked my kids curiosity about American history. It is a well done peaceful memorial to one of Americas greatest presidents.
We visited in the pouring rain, but I would have loved to take my time and linger in better weather. Unlike the other monuments and memorials, this one feels most like a park with spaced out rooms to represent FDRs four terms. There is also a gift shop with restrooms available.
It was a fine tour around, with a cold breath of the Potomac river...
Waterfalls weren’t running, otherwise it would have been 5 Stars. FDR did some incredible things while President of the United States of America. Really liked the Memorial in his honor.
The water has been turned off because of flooding. It is unlike all of the other monuments and memorials. It is a walk through memorial. It begins with a statue of FDR younger and in his first term. There are quotes from him, then it shows statues of citizens of that era poor and In a line for work and food. The United States was at 30% unemployment when he took over in The Great Depression. Then you walk through his second, third, and fourth terms. He didnt even campaign and he still got elected. At the end there is a statue of him older and in his wheelchair with his dog. Eleanor Roosevelt is the last statue before it ends. Amazing Memorial, a must see. Through his second and third terms you see tributes to his fireside chats on the radio and, of course, World War II.
Very nice and easy to get around. Awesome stone work everywhere and fountains that when operating look amazing. Spring time is the best time to go because the cherry blossoms are blooming. I walked around the lake and it took me about 5 and a half hours. Now with that said I was taking pictures and reading placards. If you would like to very comfortably enjoy the monument portion of the park I would give yourself 2 days.
Never knew all these great quotes came from FDR. Good learning experience.
We learned so much more about FDR by visiting his memorial. A very special place for a wonderful president!
This was my favorite manument in DC, and what a great man FDR was!
I wasnt looking for FDRs memorial. I just happened to stumble upon it. It is open-air and allows you to get a better understanding of this iconic President.
This is one of the hidden jewels in DC, really nice to visit after the Jefferson memorial.
Well worth the visit, dog friendly. A lot more to see than I expected. Some great quotes engraved on the walls, to make you reflect about life. I loved it, it gave me the I love my America chills. Check it out, you wont regret it. There are also beautiful cherry blossom trees to make the walk through even more magical.
Great spot for pictures with fewer crowds, has rock benches for lots of places to sit and have lovely views. Words of great wisdom embedded in plaques on stone walls. Interesting rock formations. Worthwhile seeing.
Such a beautiful and peaceful monument mapping out this great presidents three terms and the inspiring quotes he made through that time. I love that there is a statue of Elenore as well since she was such an important figure to our nation too.
Ive only visited this memorial at night. While I feel like most memorials are more enjoyable at night, FDRs isnt nearly as well lit as some others. Its also a more piecemeal type monument, not a monolith, and some of it I couldnt see at all in the dark. Id definitely recommend going day and night, but if you can only do one, hit it during the day.
Compared to the nearby Martin Luther King Jr Memorial this place is too big and over thought. The water was not working when I visited and the design doesnt work without it. I came to take a picture of Eleanor Roosevelt for my @HerstoricalMonments project. Trying to find all the places that women are celebrated in public spaces
I loved this monument. FDR was truely a great man and this monument pays tribute to his long service as president and the amazing challenges face. It has some awesome quotes from him.
The monument space for this former President is a somber area fit for reflection and should serve as a point of inspiration to those visiting these United States.
Everyone raves about Lincoln and Jefferson, but I found the experience of going through the FDR monument more moving. Its a twisting walk through sculpture and quotes - all designed to feel intimate and they packed a punch. I went during the fall colors - with the wind whipping through the area. It made some of FDRs thought even more poignant.
The fact that it is an actual memorial you can walk through and learn a thing or two instead of just a giant statue like some others makes it well worth visiting. It is nice to visit a memorial and not have to think about what party they were in, just honor a person that led through crisis.
The quotes seemed very appropos to todays struggles...guarding the human rights and civil liberties of all and measuring our progress by wether we provide enough for those who have too little. From a comfort perspective monuments are shaded and have restrooms so comfortable to visit
Lovely memorial, and a great chance to learn a lot more about this great president. Its all easily accessible, clean restrooms and a lovely gift shop. Private tours are available.
Magical place I loved it. Its nice for a family day
Beautiful memorial a must visit place in Washington DC. The scriptures written over the walls at the monument are really inspiring.
Great pieces of sculpture and art around every corner! It makes for a great casual walk.
A very nice memorial and tribute to the 32nd President of the United States. Located between MLK and the Jefferson Memorials. You have statues of he and the First Lady Eleanor. His most memorable words and sayings, as well as words and art in Braille.
Great monument, hope the fountains are fixed soon!
Very different from other Memorials. I dont believe he deserved the size over what other Presidential Memorials
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial (free entry) is a rewarding memorial to visit along the southeast bank of the Tidal Basin. It is available to visited 24 hours a day and can be combined with the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial and Jefferson Memorial for a memorable walk around the basin.Dedicated in 1997, the monuments at the Franklin Delano Roosvelt Memorial are spaced out over 7.5 acres and include sculptures of FDR, The first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt and the thought provoking Great Depression era Breadline sculpture by George Segal. You will also see a series of granite walls with cascading waterfalls, pools and streams, each with deliberate symbolism. Many of the walls engravings of FDR speeches during his time as President (1933-1945).The walls and pools of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial are surrounded by trees, giving a more tranquil and peaceful feel compared to many of national monuments along The Mall. There are a few places to take a seat and enjoy the various areas of the memorial and a gift shop at the west end if you fancy a souvenir.Overall, we very much enjoyed seeing the FDR memorial and consider it one of the more creative and memorable landmarks of U.S. Presidents that you can view along The Mall and the Tidal Basin.
Before Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) died he stated that all he wanted as a memorial was a simple marble block. Which he got, near the National Archives. Later during 1990s a much larger memorial was dedicated. The new FDR Memorial has four large open areas to symbolize FDRs 4 terms as President. While it is well made it has neither the splendor nor the grander of other memorials in Washington D.C.
This is a really large and great memorial. Really makes you stop and ponder FDRs words and how poignant they are today. It makes you realize that there were a lot of people that struggled before us and we have their legacy to fight for. There are benches to sit down on and bathrooms. Theres plenty of shade of area to take a nice rest.
Only the greatest president of all time... Make the pilgrimage here when you visit our Nations capital.
Lovely memorial in DC. Gorgeous views of the Thomas Jefferson and Washington memorials
Our guide Daniel was so knowledgeable about all the Washington DC sites. We enjoyed the FDR and MLK memorials. It wasn’t very crowded either, maybe because we went there in July and the weather was rainy and humid. Despite all that, we liked walking through and learning all about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Much more impressive than imagined - at least during my nighttime visit.
This place is absolutely stunning. A great tribute. The work put in to the design clearly shows through. When I was there there were quite a few schools there running around. It didn’t bother me but if you like peace and quiet it might be better to visit during the earlier hours of the day. Otherwise, plan on spending at least an hour hear as there’s a lot to see.
Beautiful memorial. Located opposite to MLK memorial. Best place to enjoy sunset.
A must tour when in the DC area. A serene, wonderful Memorial Park in the middle of DC that pays tribute to one of greatest Presidents of all time, up there with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. A must see. Must admit the Roosevelt schulpture in green cape reminds me of the Gorgon from the original Star Trek series.
This Memorial is long and narrow compared to most. Easy to see and get around. Marvelous. Several quotes on the walls. Everything we expected and more. The Ranger I met wad educated on several facts. Made visit go smooth. Enjoyable !
Havent been in a while. Still a great experience
A GREAT Memorial to one of our greatest presidents. Although I do wish the water features were in working order.
It was fun many places to walk to and it was nice looking around
One of the best memorials. Quotes and messages on the walls that are very compelling. The different statues and art really make this memorial tell a story. You have to kind of walk into it the area which helps immerse you into it as well.
Roosevelt memorial guides you through the trials and tribulations of his life definitely worth a visit
No water ... anywhere!Aside from that, fantastic! But no water anywhere!
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is unique Washington DC landmark which pays a fitting tribute to the 32nd President of the United States. As Roosevelt served four terms in office, it’s only appropriate that his memorial is divided into four outdoor rooms. Each represents a term in office, with statues and murals signifying issues FDR faced, from the Great Depression to WWII. In full, this expansive 7-acre memorial is the largest presidential memorial on the National Mall.
Good find. Lived here for 4 yrs and hadnt been there till recently
Loved all the quotes & toilet was out of order.
Great memorial, very thoughtful and educative.Definitely worth a visit especially during sunset.
Looked really nice and spacious, but very poorly lit for night time viewings /walks.
This is one of my favorite memorials in the city. The water features make it so beautiful. There are great quotes and lots of places to sit and contemplate. But dont go in the winter, all the water has been drained.
Nice park but limitated during covid
This is an open air memorial so go on a good day. It is a history of one of our greatest presidents with recognition given to his wife. There are statues and fountains and places to sit and contemplate where we have been and where we are going.
I wish the water features where working but such an amazing memorial
Beautiful tribute to FDR and Eleanor. The area is serene and a reminder that greatness is achieved by overcoming great challenges. A truly great couple. Humanitarians that made a difference felt until today.
Nice venue but Id say there are nicer places in the national mall area.
The memorial is very cool, and very big. But it is not fitting for a man like FDR. One quote carved in the stones here is grossly hypocritical for a man who imprisoned united states citizens because of the country they came from.
FDR Memorial is a beautiful, long walk. The memorial suits the man (even if FDR did not want anything fancy or big as a memorial).Walk the whole thing - it will surprise you. Take time to enjoy and contemplate. If you really only want a quick look and picture, I recommend you skip this one. This is definitely one to take time at.
A squirrel taking a time out, was pleasant to watch, bronze art makes you think how far we have come,a great walk
Seeing this Memorial is still on my mind. So touching to read all various things etched in the walls. Easy, flat walking area. I was impressed with the layout . Nicely shaded area to refresh your heated day. Spent about an hour here. FREE FREE FREE .
Amazing! Beautiful! Inspiring! A must see stop!
Definitely visit during daylight hours. Most of the evening lamps were out. This memorial is unusual. Many artistic points. Draw your own conclusions.
The Franklin Roosevelt Memorial is one of the best in Washington D.C. in my opinion. It is very big with many statues and signs. Each have their own meaning and it represents how much he did for our country at the time of his presidency. Dont miss this when visiting the area!
Loved walking through this place. Much bigger than I had anticipated. Has a bathroom, clean facilities. I absolutely enjoyed my visit! Even though there is a partial government shutdown I saw no signs of trash or negligence here. It wasnt crowded so it made for some really good picture taken.
Pieces of history and quotes throughout the park. It is absolutely beautiful. I love it!
Beautiful trees surrounded, perfect for family time. Great getaway from works and worries.
Outstanding! Drove / walked through DC today. Sharing some of our walking tour.
Excellent attraction, I highly recommend keeping some pictures...
The history was amazing. Very emotional looking at it all. In the end. I would come again.
