A hopeful and inspiring place for all Americans as Frederick Douglass was born into slavery yet became free an spent his life working for the rights of African Americans and also womens rights.. Amazing view of DC cityscape and the capital. If you have kids, bring them to see this American heros final home. They will be interested to see Lincolns cane as well (which Mary Todd gifted Frederick after Abraham Lincolns assassination). It flies under the radar so not usually busy.Free admission and free tour but you must register online or by phone or at the visitors center before you can enter the home.Short film in the visitors center available for viewing prior to visiting the home.Free parking but beware **the front gate closes** a few hours after the open hours and your car may be locked inside if you decide to walk or bike around.See you on the road, @gabrielcraft.meFrederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. ~Wikipedia
This was an extreme privilege for me to see the Washington home of such an important and influential man. Frederick Douglass, from former slave to supreme abolitionist, an extremely well versed speaker and brave human. The house is wonderfully kept, the guide was very knowledgeable, this is history at its finest.
Wow. I learned more about this man and his legacy via a 15 min tour than I did in school. The house is amazing! Beautifully upkept since the 1800s early 1900s same as it was left. You literally step onto a time portal. I didnt like that their park rangers were not giving out proper instructions and information about the tours start time. When I walked in and being someone who had never been there before I asked them everything to take the tour and those 2 rangers gave me a wrong time, didnt say I needed a ticket, told me to meet right where we were standing but it was actually supposed to be somewhere else. And for that I was there for an hour and missed the tour because of the rangers failure to explain what to do. They didnt know when the shuttle buses were coming and going. I mean they were not that organized. It was strange! The book store clerk was extra helpful and thr tour guide was even more. They seem VERY protective of F.D. and its interesting that he died with women protecting him and to this present day women still do.
This was amazing to see again. The view of DC from his home was breathe taking. Will vist again
Frederick Douglass home was such a Fantastic visit. I took my children as sort of a mini field trip to tour the grounds. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and informative about the timeline of Douglass life when his incredible Family lived in the home and on the property. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the home had to offer, it was marvelous to have a window back into time in such an extraordinary way. I recommend all families near and far visit this national treasure!
Amazingly preserved home of frederick Douglass, of which he lived for around 40 years. The home is accessible via a tour, our guide was a young woman who was very passionate and thoroughly knowledgeable about Douglass and his family. The rooms are preserved essentially as he left them, and gives a great insight into the historical figure. Located in the Anacostia neighborhood of D.C. on the Maryland side. Free parking.
Beautiful Inspiring house on a hill looking out over D.C. spacious, very well built & well kept. Has a Stature & Smell of Blackness & Deep Rooted Culture. A dream of many men of that era; Well earned Well deserved.
Lovely historic site. Beautiful very well kept grounds. The tour guide was nice, had a great voice and super knowledgeable. The inside has some very insightful quotes from Mr. Douglas. Picture worthy in every way. I would recommend going and taking friends / family on a tour. The views from atop the hill are just breath taking.
Transformative experience with incredibly knowledgable guides along the way.
An impressive site. It is out of the way, away from the main tourist attractions of DC, but a very important story for all Americans to know. The home is high on a bluff overlooking Washington, above the Anacostia neighborhood, across the river in South East DC. The concrete visitors center is dug out of the side of the hill. You start your tour here with quotes from his writings and a timeline of his life followed by a video of his life story. The house can only be seen by guided tours of 10 people so call ahead to make a reservation. The house is very large and decorated in the late 19th century style. Since the home stayed in the family it has many of the original family artifacts. The National Parks Service needs to make a new video and make sure their staff are more thoroughly trained on the story of Frederick Douglasss life. Definitely worth a visit. Makes me want to know more about this important mans life.
The house was well preserved. The tour guide was well-versed in Frederick Douglass life. The visitor center plays a film about his life that is very informative. I recommend this tour to everyone who is interested in the history of this country.
A amazing place that everyone must visit and the tour is a must even if you know the story.
What a privilege to visit this amazing mans home. The relics of Mr. Douglasss were awesome to see!
Visitor Center was AWESOME! But I am very disappointed in the upkeep of the property. Grass needed to cut, sidewalks swept, informational sign on backside of the house had bird droppings covering it. I was pretty upset about that aspect.
I had a wonderful experience today at Fredrick Douglass historical home. The ranger, Kevin Bryant was excellent! I truly felt like Kevin was a friend showing me this treasure of a home and sharing the history of the people who once lived there. I toured the Douglass home, saw the video which was well done. Then I purchased a book from the book store. What a wonderful experience!
This is HIS HOUSE! how awesome. make sure you get a tour. one of the most influential members of civil rights, well before MLK. Fredericks journey from a slave, to advocating civil rights to Mr. Lincoln, how cool.
If you do not know much about Frederick Douglass then this would be the perfect place to visit. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history and life of Frederick Douglass. The house was very well preserved and it was a very fascinating tour overall. To be able to witness how life was back then compared to now was really eye-opening and Id definitely recommend this tour as part of anyones first time visiting Washington DC.
The NPS tour of this site is amazing. You really get an idea of who this man was and also how people lived in the time. Our guide was very knowledgeable (our group had a ton of questions and he easily navigated them all) and extremely enthusiastic. It may not be the first place youd think to visit when you come to DC, but its a great site! Theres also plenty of parking on the premises. Even just to visit the grounds and not do the tour, the view from the top is a great panorama of DC, MD, and VA.
Great way to spend an afternoon! Tour guide very good!
Frederick Douglas- A slave who became free. Known as a gifted orator and champion of the oppressed. Great to visit his restored home Cedar Hill. Beautiful view of the city.
Very historic home of an important African American gentleman who was influential in working to overcome the injustice of slavery. The park staff member, John McCaskill who guided us, was thorough and spoke well about both big and small incidences and reflections about Frederick Douglass and his family that lived in the house. Amazing to stand where one of the greatest Americans lived. John spoke eloquently and knew Frederick Douglass life so well, he was an inspiration to both young, (a 3, 10 and 16 year old girls) who were actually included in his discussion about the family life of Frederick Douglass, and old alike. Excellent presentation.
Great tour guides and an amazing opportunity to learn more about an amazing guy!
What a hidden Gem in DC. Ive been to DC at least 10 times before I went here. AMAZING!!! Great, knowledgeably, enthusiastic staff. Im a 30 year high school US History teacher and I even learned things I did not know that filled in parts of other stories in US history. This is the greatest place that few know about. Beautiful preservation of the legacy of an American hero. Do NOT miss this. Make sure you make reservations because the tour groups are small but you will get amazing attention. Ask questions because the guides know their history and love to answer questions.
It was really insightful to learn the history of Frederick Douglas and all his contributions to US history. Touring his house was definitely interesting, as we saw so many original items which illustrated how advanced society has become. The guides were excellent in answering questions and rich in knowledge.
Do make time and stop by and visit his home. We learned a lot. We came in and the only way to get in is through a group tour and book an online reservation. We didnt have a reservation, but the young woman informed us that some people dont show and we might be able to get in. So, in the meantime we watched a short film about his life and walked around the facility reading about his background. When time came we were lucky to get in and visit his home.
Great man. Nice views of DC from the property. Call early to schedule a tour. The surrounding area is quite sketchy, so I would encourage driving to the site.
It was a wonderful house owned by a wonderful man. Please visit this National Park. The tour through the house was worth the time and it was only one dollar each.
Everyone must visit one of the most inspiring stories in American history. Run by the National Park Service. the tour and museum makes it one of the top historic sites to visit in Washington, DC.
This was a Amazing tour of Mr. Frederick Douglasss house and his heart breaking but Blessed Life. He makes me even Proud to be Black, and through his past works helps My Future look brighter!! A must visit Tour within Washington DC.
Its rich with history. All man is made equal
One of the best museums I have ever seen. Curator was very informative. Even my wife enjoyed it.
Well managed, friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, large site. Not easy to access with my students from the metro but we enjoyed the trip.
Amazing experience. Our guide was so knowledgeable, informative and encouraging!!! CD
AMAZING tour. Our guild was very knowledgable and enjoyed what she does. I forgot to get her name but if u go she is a young black lady with dreads. You wont be disappointed.
Visited, Fredrick Douglas house wasn’t open. Still had the opportunity to walk the grounds. Visited the gift store. Check it out. Memorable.
Nothing less than five stars. Know your history and see someone who was a slave turn himself and became one of our greatest leaders in our nation Im pretty sure if he was alive today he would have been a president. He should have been a president and his era but besides the fact the site is great you will learn something and its one of the very few things on the east side of the river that is worth seeing.
Absolutely loved learning about this person known for his forward thinking Frederick Douglass- his home in D. C.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. There was a short movie that gave a bit of background on Frederick Douglass that they played before the tour of his home. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour entertaining as well as informative. Theres a gift shop and parking at the welcome center. Be sure to call and reserve a spot on the tour ahead of your visit.
Our History is so vibrant and full of triumphs
This very popular historic site offers a look at the life of Frederick Douglas and his achievements which provided the foundation of the Civil Rights Movement. The museum and tours of the Douglass Home are well run. Advance tour resrvations may be made for a few people or for a large school. The historian/ park ranger who led the Douglass Home tour had done extensive research on Douglass and his times.
We had a great tour guide that told us everything there is to know about FD.
Ranger McCaskill was the best! Our scholars enjoyed their visit.
Most awesome display of history. Black men dominating political scenes for the promotion of equality. Depends on the guide on what you actually learn on the tour.
One of the most fascinating places in Southeast Washington..... great place to start recognizing the Mighty Moor!!! He squeezed about four lifetimes into 1 powerful one!!!! No matter where you start.... your journey is up to you!!!!
Amazing tour. Park Ranger Bryant was the very best....
Very interesting, small tour group so we got a lot of attention. Inspired additional research.
Fredrick Douglass is one of my favorite abolitionists and former slave turned revolutionist. My opinion maybe strongly biased. That being said, going to his home, er, one of them, but his final home... Was very moving. The view of the DC and Maryland and Virginia on the gorgeous hill, is as spectacular as the view from the top of Washingtons monument. If you are a historical carnisure like me, you will definitely appreciate the deep value of the house and its contents. Worth the visit!
Great visit......just wish they had a better way to get wheelchairs and strollers up the hill.
Wow. Very interesting insights into the life and times and contributions of this early African American leader. Very inspirational and moving. The young man giving the tour was also very inspirational and went well beyond what one might expect ... with a thorough knowledge of the man and his times, and events and societal choices taken then with ramifications which reverberate even today.
Tours are very informative. So much to learn.
Marx and Engels, “It has been the first to show what man’s activity can bring about. It has accomplished wonders for surpassing Egyptian Pyramids, Roman Aqueducts, and Gothic Cathedrals, it has conducted expeditions that put in the shade all former Exoduses of nations and crusades” (The Communist Manifesto, p. 10-11, 1888) The full significance of The Souls of Black Folk as a cultural type warrants detailed comparative study, for it is not now possible to say People of Colour belong to this type. There is no doubt, however, that the type has a way of explaining to us, People of Colour Culture. Moreover, it should be stressed that the cross-cultural significance of this type, consists of varieties and purpose rather than classifying People of Colour as ...The final phase of People of Colour History has been sketched into Slavery. The very absence of People of Colour Leadership made this adjustment easier. The principle obstacle to rapid and complete assimilation into the subculture was and still is Race Relations, which barred the People of Colour from full participation in many crucial aspects of the World Research and Development. In relation to Employment, Tottenham MP David Lammy, 2018 cited in Waugh, 2018, “Yet again these figures show what Black Britons know to be true – there are still so many rivers to cross when it comes to Black Britons breaking into the establishment” Contrast to Lammy, The nihilism in black America has become a massive spiritual blackout in America. The undeniable collapse of integrity, honesty and decency in our public and private life has fuelled even more racial hatred and contempt (West, 2018). In the Twenty-First Century, I posited that, Du Bois’ Talented Men leave out Women contribution. For example, I see that Talented Men, there is no room for a woman to join. The argument is that, if we to understand in which ways the patterns of behaviour serve to adapt People of Colour to the difficulties posed by their Physical Environment. There must be room that women play part. In the view for the Talented Men, there was a struggle between the sexes. I use the ideas of exploitation and exchange between the sexes. I present Rhesus cam records of Primate Society. Per evidence, suggested that females solidarity play vital role of deciding among the bigger and stronger males who emerges as their head and in charge of a troop. For example, the Indian and the Pakistani Rhesus Macaque arranged themselves in matrilineal clan system. However, each troop of clan has male associated. Though, the male rank depends on female support. The next part will bring evidence in anthropological data in the Capitalist Society. The use of Malinowski’s method of Participant Observation revealed detailed and systematically information of the Newly-Found, Native-Pink, with their Passive-Aggressive and unwritten law of superiority, laying down of the gauntlet for their favourite beast, and suddenly found manners, in general terms, consists of conduct or words or practices which disadvantage people because of their culture or ethnic origin. In its more subtler form, it is as damaging as in its overt form. The fact is that among the group, the females assert collective control of their own sexuality-refusing sex to all males except those who came to them with supplies. The observation is that among the group, women usually timed their ban on sexual relations with their periods of infertility, while they are menstruating, creating solidarity through women togetherness. These periods tendered to occur in synchrony. Though, the result was that each month, with the onset of menstruation, sexual relations ruptured in collective, ritualistic way. The argument is that among the group, the female residence is matrilocal, meaning that a married-in contributes provisions to his wife’s kin. I see that there are two basic patterns of hunting. The first each man decide by himself whether to hunt or not. He usually hunts alone and brings back the provisions to his own household.
Loved the tour and the building. Big thanks to a visiting friend for wanting to go, which got me exploring my area like a tourist.
Has been kept to the period he lived in. Beautiful view of DC. Not for the mobility challenged.
Incredible experience. Staff and Park Rangers were fantastic.
Much more interesting than I thought it would be... Really enjoyed it..
Time well spent to learn more about an African American leader..beautifully preserved home
Great tour. Beautiful grounds. Our guide was very knowledgeable and its free.
Frederick Douglass’ house is well worth a visit. Be aware that there are many stairs involved in the tour as his house is two stories and is on a hill (there is a way up to the house without involving stairs). Many of the artifacts in the home belonged to Douglass and the home itself is beautiful. There is a lot of history here and it’s amazing to be in the house where Frederick Douglass lived while learning more about him and what he accomplished. I highly recommend visiting here.
This is truly a must see place, if your a history person you must stop by. Fredric Douglas is truly one of my heroes who’s sometimes forgotten but he was and is a big Catalyst for human rights for all people.
Great location overlooking downtown DC. The house and Douglass history are very inspiring. The ranger was very knowledgeable... great field trip with my son during spring break
This place is truly a wonderful experience as you step back in time to get a glimpse of the great abolitionists and statesmans life.
I loved touring this place. Good to know a bit more about this awesome man.
The National Park Service staff is INCREDIBLE! They are knowledgeable and exciting. Thank you so much Ranger John McCaskill!
Being off the main Metro routes diminishes tourist awareness of the estate of one of Americas greatest 19th century men. But it is an easy and affordable Uber ride from Capitol Hill now to get to an uncrowded but important and illuminating site.
Amazing spot 2 learn about a great man who made a difference in black history as well American history.
Very good opportunity to know the story of a great man
This tour was amazing! The park rangers here are excellent!I even learned a few things about my own family when the rangers discussed the differences between traveling trunks. The rangers were excellent at really showing how significant Frederick Douglass is in American history. This is a must see tour...plus the cost is only $1.50
Our tour guide was AMAZING! Beware there are lots of steps getting up to the house.
This is the most amazing house museum in the US. You owe it to yourself to go out of your way to visit, get the tour from great guides, and be amazed. Reserve online if posdible, there are only a few tours each day at odd times.
We took my class here, I had no idea this was open to the public. Easy parking, great and knowledgeable employees. Gorgeous view!
It was a great to visit Frederick Douglass home; however, they only allowed us to tour the outside of the home.
Must see!! This is a great opportunity to learn more about a great politician. Great tour guides!!
When you are ever in Washington you must do the African American tour. Very enlightening from a poor mans perspective.
Not a well known site in the D.C area, run by the National Park Service, thus no admission fees for the tour and parking is also for free. The majority of the artifacts in the house are authentic and are not replicas.Be aware that there are many stairs involved in the tour as his house is two stories and is located on a hill (there is a ramp up the hill). The guide was vary knowledgeable and provided many insight. If your an enthusiast about African american and salivary abolition history, you enjoy this place.
Seeing the house and the personal items of fredrick Douglass and his family was amazing.

Very nice historic site. The history on this site is extremely rich, and the man behind it all is incredible.
Frederick Douglass was a great place to visit and to know history that in his time he took the most photographs a lot more history to him than just that definitely visit
My honey and I had no conception of how close this place was to us, so we were so pleased when we made the trip across town to visit. The tour is absolutely worth your time and contribution. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable and kind as well.I will say that there is a very steep climb to get to the house itself - stairs if youre feeling froggy and a winding path if you arent. Bring good shoes! And a camera, because the views are absolutely breath taking.
Well preserved home and the staff was very knowledgeable.
Recently attended the Fourth of July celebration, with a reenactment of Frederick Douglasss What to a slave is the 4th of July? speech; highly recommend.
Great historical home. Great work by the Park Rangers. Lovely place to visit on a Sunday afternoon.
