A very beautiful synagogue in the heart of Savannahs historic district. Lots of history and interesting artifacts from the Jewish population of past Savannah. If youre touring the historic district this is worth the time. The staff was friendly and the tour guides very knowledgeable. And as the t shirts say, Shalom yall. Cool and interesting. Check it out.

Amazing, historic synagogue and museum. A Torah from the 1400s that came over from England in 1736 with the first ship of Jewish immigrants fleeing religious persecution. Many other fascinating and historic artifacts. Highly recommended.

Great historic synagogue that is located Downtown Savannah. They offer shabbat services on Friday and Saturday. The temple itself is very beautiful inside and out with stain glass windows and wonderful architecture. The congregation is mixed with ages and backgrounds and are very involved within the community. Their annual Food Festival draws and massive crowd at the end of October.

We visited Congregation Mickve Israel on a recent trip to Savannah. It is a beautiful synagogue in the historic district. The docents were very knowledgeable and bring the history of the 3rd oldest synagogue in the US. In fact its founding is almost as old as Savannah itself. The synagogue building dates back to 1878, and its Gothic style is rare for temples today. The many stained glass panels are vivid when seen on sunny days. On the second floor, there is a small museum with 2 deer-skin Torahs, among other historical artifacts.

This was the first of a kind that I ever visited. I was amazed. They give a tour of the place with some stories from history and a lecture in the synagogue itself. The architecture and the stained glass windows are just inspiring on so many levels.

We arrived at about 1 in the afternoon, and decided to go on a tour, $8 per person, and 12 and under are free. The tour guide (volunteer) was very informative and answered all our questions, not only about the temple, but about Judaism as well. The sanctuary is a Neo-gothic sanctuary, the only one in America. The museum is not large, just one room, and contains some of the artifacts that the original settlers left. It also contains the 2 oldest Torahs that the temple has. All in all, it is a great place to visit in Savannah.

Extremely cool to hear about the history of Jews and the current Jewish community in Savannah, something I never would have imagined existed. The docent on our tour was wonderful, and I enjoyed seeing the beautiful sanctuary and the small but informative museum. Well worth the donation, and I bought a few adorable “Shalom Y’all!” T shirts as gifts.Must see for anyone interested in the Jewish history of Savannah. Also, highly recommend visiting the Bonaventure cemetery for their surprisingly massive Jewish section, and the Holocaust memorial they have is pretty moving as well.

Historic synagogue in a gothic revival church-style building as its over 150 years old, the congregation is over 300 years old.Rabbi Robert Haas and his wife April are amazing people as are the various aged congregants: alas as most American synagogue congregations they skew on the majority in the over 50 age and above, though that is getting some turnaround. If you want a primarily Hebrew and orthodox religious experience, look elsewhere. But if you want to get meaning from your reflective prayer ( you should want to have Kavanah for your prayer) then come here by all means and be welcomed whole heartedly.Fyi: Kavanah roughly translated from the Hebrew via the kabbbalistic tradition means to have pure heart and 100% devotion in your prayer study, else dont even bother to go through the motions as you only will receive that which you give freely & sincerely from your heart & soul speaking from the drash.

Interesting gothic synagogue. Although the original congregation was founded as a Sephardic (Spanish Jewish) congregation back in 1735, the membership shifter toward reform German Jews by the 1870s. The docent pointed out that it is the only synagogue in the USA, and probably the world, to be purposely built in the shape of a transept cross because the Jews of Savannah felt that this would help them be accepted by their Christian neighbors when the new building was constructed after the Civil War (he actually said this). My Spanish friend confirmed that the interior was reminiscent of a Spanish Cathedral. Why I am only giving it three stars is that the tour started late, only lasted 20 minutes, and the tour guide, incredibly, made a comment about Florida Jews being people that he and his wife wanted to get away from when they decided to retire to Savannah. This is after a show of hands asking people on the tour where they are from, and Florida came up by a considerable number of people on the tour. Granted, this might have been an attempt at humor but many of the people on the tour just stared at each other in disbelief. The Synagogue should vet their docents to a greater extent.

While walking in the old section of Savannah we stumbled upon the tour of the synagogue. We had a great docent who shared with us the history of the Jews in Savannah. This is the third oldest congregation in the United States and was founded primarily by Sephardic Jews from England. It is now a reform synagogue. The small upstairs museum houses beautifully preserved Torahs. The short tour was definitely a worthwhile stop.
