This place was great. Everyone was very nice. They led a detailed tour where numerous working models were on display and operated. They were actively switching trains via the turntable, which was really cool. Some of the historic cars were fully renovated inside but were closed due to COVID . They also offered live blacksmith demonstrations some days. This tour was worthwhile, to say the least. We bought the pass for 3 sites so we could view other properties managed by the Coastal Heritage Society. The others were equally hospitable.

I love it here, I love the old trains and history of it all, Morgan issued an informative and excellent tour/demonstration of the steam engine, I especially enjoyed the hand pump rail car with you. I felt like a kid again !! So awesome!! I got myself the toy train in a cool tin box and a whole bunch of postcards and bumper sticker. Huge model train set up of Savannah is awesome!! You all are doing a wonderful job keeping this place going. Kudos everybody!! ️️️️️

I thought this would be cool but every car and engine was closed because of covid. Not sure if it wouldve been any better without covid. The model train layout was dirty, run down looking and only had a single engine going around the track. The turntable was started up but without anything on it, it was as boring as watching a lazy susan go in circles. I didnt think it was worth the cost of admission and only took 30 minutes to walk through it. For the same price, go see The Mighty Eight Museum, its worth the money, educational and not at all ho-hum.

This is the largest, ( Five Acers ) mid- nineteenth century rail road building complex in the the U.S.. There are a functioning Turn Table, and Three Tenders; one steam, two diesel. ( Havent seen the Steam Tender in quite a while - Why ? ) However, it seems to be under the control of bureaucrats, and not Blue Collar Workers, who, by definition, Know more than the afore mentioned. I think, kinda, maybe. Humbly submitted.

This historic venue is super enjoyable both for those who want an informational tour and families who want the kids to see trains up close. The Roundhouse and turntable are beautifully preserved and there are numerous cars and several engines to explore. On most weekends there are train rides which are a real bonus. There is so much to see and absorb that if we lived in the area an annual pass would be in order. If you love trains and/or history, definitely add this stop.

Excellent opportunity to experience Georgia steam era railroading first hand. The tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable in the overall operation and functionality of the entire site as well as individual buildings and work areas. There are also activities to keep younger children busy when they become uninterested in the historical presentations. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in either local history or railroad history in general.

This was my favorite stop in Savannah! The history, and they let you explore basically everything. The entire campus has trains, buildings, history around every corner. The family spent over an hour just looking. The train ride was good, gives you a feeling of riding in an old train. It is an open air car so my family was cold the day we went. Otherwise, awesome experience. FYI, if you have children, you have to do the childrens museum! That place is out-of-this-world. My kids might have stayed all day.

Right price for what there is to see. This is a great small, interesting museum. They have a cute little store which I really enjoyed looking through.Learn from my mistakes by reviewing my tips:- I wouldn’t take small, temperamental children. And especially not on a hot summer day.- Be aware that there is a schedule for touring the different train cars, so get there early or there won’t be much to enjoy- Consider an adult-only stroll through so you can really enjoy it. :)- Check our the passes available to you because there are 3 day pass options and others I can’t recall.- If going with kids coordinate your visit with open hours of the children’s “museum” as well.I didn’t do my research for the long day trip here. And as a result I didn’t really enjoy my visit with my temperamental 3 year old. I personally feel like 98% of this museum is most interesting to adults, but with a little planning it could’ve been more enjoyable.

Worth the visit. Tours were interesting and informative. Being able to walk through the train yard buildings and roundhouse was a bonus since you can see not only the static display but the workings of a historic train yard operation. There are many people working to improve the experience for future visits and to preserve the important history. Take the tours. They are informative and the only way you can go through 2 of the static display passenger cars. The short train ride tour is worth while too. Tours are included in the price of admission.

I spent the weekend in Savannah for a serious foodie weekend! Georgia State Railroad Museum is the host yrly for the Food & Wine festival. Go early for this event, parking is crazy, but only $5 in the garages. I appreciated the city not ripping folks off, like most cities do during events. Its a short walk 2 blocks to the festival.Ive been to many food festivals and I must say, they are not as organized as others. Im used to paying one price for the food & wine for the a given amt of time. Only the wine, beer, liquor tasting was included. So you have to stand in another line inside and purchase tickets for the food. They did have a few vendors giving free food away, but you have to really look for them. This was rather annoying to be honest. I like how Columbia, SC does their food & wine fest, one price for everything. Hopefully they will change in the future, it will be less standing in long lines.I did like the museum grounds and setting. The vendors worked really hard to make sure you got a tasting in a timely manner. You do receive a tasting glass upon entering.Tip: Bring your own wine holder strap, or buy one at the fest. I have plenty of the and forgot mine at home...Do enjoy!

Do you like trains? Do you have kids that like trains? This is a well maintained museum and former operating yard. Lots of steam engines as well as some diesel-electric. Tours are available as well as a ride behind one of the engines (and you get to experience the turn-table, and have some of the history of what youre seeing narrated to you). If you have children, combining with the child museum admission lets you entertain them if they tire of the more educational exhibits. Though, some of the engines you are allowed to board (read the signs), so there is plenty of entertainment for all.

I have been to a LOT of good railroad museums, and (in early 2020) this is not one. Seriously, I am guessing they are under-staffed/financed but this place is only a little better than whats the point? as there are hardly any plaquards or signs or maps . . . even though this area West of Savannah is interlaced with historic railroad access and passenger terminals (the visitors center) and freight houses of the almost half-dozen different roads that accessed the city and port area during the 1880s-1930s.Nice turntable and a reasonable (if non-themed or connected) collection of old rolling stock. But no signs or attributation. I guess Norfolk Southern only has so much resources to finance every museum and the local politicians may promise more than fund, I suppose. PA State RR Museum in Stroudsburg is the Gold Standard imo.Its kind of a shame as the GPAuthority, only 5-7 miles away, is a HUGE generator of rail freight (mostly intermodal). There is so much more railroad activity going in/out of Savannah now than there was since little steam engines pulled 8~20 car trains 100~150 years ago. But walking thru this place, one would never know . . .
