I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed our time here. I knew Savannah had a lot of Civil War history, but I was ashamedly unaware of how much Revolutionary War history is here. We went to the reenactment (which I generally hate) but this one was very interesting. Our tour guide was well versed in the history of that time and was quite a good story teller. I would recommend this for a nice afternoon. You can get through the museum quickly, but the reenactment will take you another 45 minutes at least, and I think it was worth it.
Excellent rail museum. Live steam locomotives, operational turntable, many different era cars to tour.
This was the best thing we did in Savannah! You have to make sure you do the tour when youre there! Without it, the museum isnt nearly as interesting. The Revolutionary War tour was outstanding! The young man who led our tour made the whole trip worth it! He was interesting and engaging! He brought history to life!
Very interesting museum. With lots of history & artifacts from Savannah from before the revolutionary war. Its worth the trip. Nice gift shop. Some of the displays are hands on. Self guided tour so you can take your time. It was one of the many highlights on our trip through Savannah!
With live people giving tours of the museum and the outlining homes of Frogtown (Morgan our guide was excellent) the museum was very focused on the people and places in Savannah. All the wars as well as the development of the Girl Scout chapters in America show the real people story of history in Savannah. Frogtown shows the diversity of the working class looking to help each other as well as themselves to survive and build a better life. Minorities based on color and country came to try and find a job and a home around the train repair yards. We got to walk to 2 examples of the hes of the real workers seldom left over from progress. The homes of the wealthy are nice to see but the worker class homes need to be preserved as they tell the Savannah story too.
Was a nice little museum, contained some great information as well as great exhibits with interesting relics from antiques to popular culture. The one down fall would be that it was small...very small compared to other museums Ive visited and for such a historical city I did expect more, I walked through the museum with my kids and it didnt take us much longer than 30min to walk through every exhibit, not to say you couldnt spend more time as I do have small children to entertain, I just feel compared to others in my experience it was small and a little expensive for what it is $9 an adult and $5 a child. There is also a kids museum and railroad museum across the street but it had construction taking place so didnt visit.
Great experience to learn about history. Knowledgeable people there and helpful
Great place to visit. Lots of history.
Great place to see the history behind savannah!!
Loved the exhibition... great detail.
Awesome place if ur a history buff like me ull love it.
This is was a unique space for our companys event. I imagine it would be good for other large groups too.
Two posts on this one nice but would have liked to see everything grand kids liked it as well as myself.
Stopped in on a road trip... We both love trains. Was interesting to see the history.Takes about 1-3 hours to go through...lotsa walking. The factory is fascinating
This will be the best $7.50 youve ever spent. The museum is not that big but it has everything from The Forrest Gump Bench to a Revolutionary War Reenactment.
I recommend this place
Very cool place. If youre lucky enough to be there when they have the tours of the Railroad Presidents Cars it is well worth the time. The employee doing the tour when we were there was VERY knowledgeable. She spoke about the train cars as if they were her own children. Extremely nice woman.
Nice museum. Lots of cool stuff inside
Really neat place filled with lots of history about Savannah
Nice to see the old locomotive trains. Nothing to write home to Mom about.
Trains and museums what a great combination. Price is reasonable. I highly recommend this place if your visiting savannah
You can do this in just over an hour. Some well written storyboards. The Baldwin Locomotive was the centerpiece and informative. Great paid parking next door. The only negative was, there isnt a AAA discount.
This is a neat place to visit. My son really enjoyed it too!
Reenactment was fun for the whole family!
Very informative but a little too small. Savannah has a lot of history on its own. I wish they build the bigger place for it
We went specifically for the Loyalist and Liberty tour and it was awesome! The guy who presented the tour did so in a full drummer boy uniform walking in drumming calling all loyalist to join.his story telling ability was theatre worthy! Our grand son at age 12 loved it! If you go to Savannah check it out they have tour times and well worth it! And also the tenement tour was very informative everyone yours the mansions but to see how the real people lived and but if the history was worth the discomfort of the heart.
Nice museum and a good bargain if you purchase the three pack. Liked the train museum and Old Fort Jackson as well.
This was a fun place especially for train buffs. Tour the inside of the executive cars.
We attended 2020 Night at the Museum and it was incredible!! I hope they continue to have this event as we will make it an annual family adventure!
In the same building as the Visitor Center, this is a great place to start your tour of Savannah. Its a small museum, but the tickets are inexpensive. The ticket also includes admission to reenactments of the battles that occurred in Savannah during the Revolutionary War. These take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Unfortunately, we were not able to get back for these.
$7 admission, easy reasonably priced parking, good exhibits, gift shop, restrooms and Cafe. Can access the battlefield, trolly tours and railroad museum easily
This museum was a pleasant surprise! After our trolley ride, we toured the museum and really ejoyed it. While inside, we were offered a tour of two old houses in Frog Town, just a block away. Very interesting and informative.
Informative history of SavannahA pleasant walk through their times.
A small museum with very good information on the history of Savannah and life there since its foundation, especially about the Siege of Savannah of 1779.The revival of the battle, animated by a very good young man in period uniform, is not to be missed. He explains all of the context of the battle, and after a short walk through the battlefield and fortifications outside, also demonstrates shooting a musket. I cant understand why this is not even advertised on their website.
Great experience! Enjoyed the retelling of the Battle of Savannah. The “soldiers” were fantastic, got all the visitors involved- the kids loved the chance to pretend to battle the redcoats! A quick outing but well worth the cost.
This place was a little piece of history!! Great tours.. the ticket is good for 3 days. So you can get your full of railroad stuff.
Informative information, very detailed
We really liked this Museum. It is small, but it has kid friendly stations like touch and feel, built your own pattern, etc. The highlight was the actors that narrate the history. Be sure to check the schedule for it. Friendly staff too.
The Savannah history museum is a great place to visit for locals as well as visitors to Savannah. The staff is friendly and the grounds are well maintained. The old trains are wonderful and children absolutely love this place.
Visited with a food tour, very good ice cream, will be back on our own soon
Lots of cool restoration going on. The buildings are being restored or are restored. It is good to watch both films. If you are short on time watch the one about the railroad history on the left hand side.
Really interesting train museum with an operational roundhouse and a lot of cool locomotives and train cars on display. This repair shop employed skilled workers who could fix locomotives and train cars (and make parts if needed!).Theres a good movie in one of the train cars as well as a lot of machine shop tools and machines to see. One building has several machines (e.g. drill) that were run by a system of belts and pulleys that were powered by a steam powered generator housed in a building next door.Highly recommended!
Dont take my word. See it yourself its wonderful
Learnt some interesting things here but ot wasnt has Bigg as I expected.
This was a great place to visit for some local history and a replica of the Forrest Gump bench is there!
Fun to learn the rail history of Georgia
The museum has an eclectic collection of Savannah and its history. Not too big and easy to navigate through.
A must go for all. Dont miss the Loyalist and Liberty act!Take the time to go to this museum. They have a lot of variety in beautifully arranged displays including some interactive ones. Dont forget to attend to one of their Loyalist and Liberty acts which is a reanactment of the American Revolution Battle of Savannah. Its an amazing experience that I highly recommend. The staff is wonderful and knowledgeable. The ticket price is low especially considering all the things youll see and learn.
A few interesting exhibits but pretty small overall and nothing has been updated in a while.
Beautiful museum, would recommend for anyone into civil war.
Great place! My only complaint is its not super stroller friendly - pretty bumpy ride!
Im not big on History museums. The grand babies loved it here.
This is a typical old town museum, but what raised it from ordinary to outstanding were the 2 young men from the historical society dressed in French uniforms who marched through the museum beating a kettle drum. When they had drummed up enough interest they led us outside onto the remains of the English redoubt (fort made of earth) and explained the battle of Savannah. Then we were issued with wooden muskets or Colours (battle flags) and our guides led us on a charge against a reconstructed fort while stopping to load and fire their flintlock muskets (real gunpowder but no bullet)I gained from this reenactment an understanding of the battle and why the English won so decisively, which could never be obtained from a description on a museum wall.
We just participated in the Night at the Museum night guard training and my whole family loved it. After watching the Night at the Museum 2, we went through night guard training and then went around the museum where 7 different exhibits came to life and explained about their particular character, their impact on Savannah history as well as their points of view through history (think British soldier during the revolution). What a fantastic program.
Wonderful people, great exhibits!! I highly recommend stopping here while in Savannah.
Very informative. Will definitely come back to see the additional trains being refurbished
Love historic sites so this was a nice experience
This was a lot of fun. Went to different buildings to see what use to be. Enjoyed the train ride and lots of history.
Great place to take the kids free tours on Thursday Friday and Saturday interactive as well
Had a great time with all the old big trains!!!
Very fun place to visit. The info center can help you with maps and things to do. Lots of old objects and photos. They have clean restrooms and food.
Price tag ($9 for adults, $5 for kids) seems a little steep for such a small exhibit, but the workers are friendly and offer great activities for kids, including dressing up in Revolutionary garb!
Great display of Savannahs heritage and even had a revolutionary war reenactment. Would recommend to anyone. Savannah has a great history thats many dont know about
We had a blast! The staff is amazing and super knowledgeable! Great experience!
We met Dan, and had a great time and learned so much...Thank you
The environment of the museum illustrates the importance of rail transport in the development of commerce in the South. The preservation of the shops and warehouses has been very well done.
Loved this museum especially the part where the guide shoots the gun. Awesome experience.
Last time I visited this place was 15 years ago and its so great to see them adding as time goes by! Shows you how much Savannah has gone through and how much its citizens have contributed!
Wonderful history. Great staff that are knowledgeable and friendly. Help keep this piece of history preserved, by visiting and donating.
Pizza great huge slices only takes cash
Amazing place lots of history. You will learn a lot
Holy cow, got to the museum late. They let us tour on a donation and came out to let the kids ride the hand car even though it was not a scheduled time. Is everyone in Savannah this customer service oriented? You guys rock. Visit it is col, plus make a nice donation.
We drove two and a half hours to do their Night At The Museum event they had for the kids. I highly recommend going!! The actors were amazing and did a great job with keeping the childrens interest in learning about history! After the children found all the clues to help the guards find the keys to the museum, the children got to sit in the theater they have and watch the actual Night at The Museum movie. It was well worth the trip and the cost of tickets!! Its a must it you happen to visit Savannah!
Great place to know the history of Savannah and then knowing an amazing area to go to check out
The museum is very well done. My favorite part was a guided tour from a Revolutionary War reenactor. Plus, the Forrest Gump bench is there.
The museum is nice, but not impressive. What WAS impressive was the young man who led the revolutionary war reenactment of the Battle of Savannah. WOW! He was so enthusiastic! I highly recommend a visit just to participate in his presentation. What a great way to learn about history!
Im a history buff, love anything to do with history and supporting places like this. Without these places we will lose out on so much in our own history.
Great info. I enjoyed most the girl scout exhibition
What a great little museum. Really interesting war exhibits from civil and revolutionary war. I think we paid 7 bucks a person which I am more than willing to pay to support local history.
Alot of great and diverse information here! Love seeing all the war history and the Forrest Gump Bench! Also there is a wonderful Girl Scout section at the end for any girl scouts out there! And at only $7 admission it was definitely worth it.
For a small fee we got to see the history museum. Small place, but well put together. Many great bits of history. The best part was the revolutionary war reenactment of the Battle of Savannah. The young man was so enthusiastic, you can tell how much he cares for the city’s history. He gave a small talk before taking us to the battlefield and explained many aspects of the battle. On our way back there was also a Girl Scouts exhibition. We had a wonderful afternoon.
Loved it will come by again when in the area
Great place to go. Make sure you have a lot of time to look at the artifacts and take the two tours.
Had a great time. Some great looking and informative exhibits
This is a great place to go and spend some time learning about the foundation of Savannah. We were here on a Saturday morning and they had a Living Historian onsite to show you and explain in details several of the major things that happened on the very site of the museum. This is a must stop for any one of any age.
Really enjoyed the time I spent here. And they let me bring my dog on the train ride
Love the friendly staff and all the history here. Will be passing through in july once again
Such a cute little museum and they even have a fun activity for the kids. A must see for locals and visitors. Our favorite exhibits are the train, Forrest Gump bench and Girl Scouts history
The museum is a must see for any and all photographers!!! So cool to visit. Been there for a wedding... Gosh it was stunning!!!! And so classy!!!Went back withgrandkids, ages 8, 8 and 11... They had a blast too!!
A lot of fascinating historical items and information for the whole family. Anyone visiting Savannah definitely has to see it.
Took my 2 yr old grandson he loved it. They have a 3 day pass . Train rides on certain days and he loved all the wonderful kid friendly areas. Really great time
Very educational
