This was the third mission which was part of Missions National Park. You can drive over here but this had a very little left of the mission. Just walk around the park and read the pointers given to know more about this mission. People were going around the mission trail along the San Antonio river on there bicycle. The trail along the river is long and pleasantly.

Usual historic mission and church. Has a few interpretive panels.. Decent parking... Good access to the river walk trail.Of all of the river walk missions this one is the least picturesque... With the weakest interpretation... If you cant see them all missed this one.

I believe it is the most southern Mission site. Its beautiful and worth a visit. We visited all the Missions by car. I would not recommend to do it by bike unless youre trained, since the route is not as built as you might think. Weve seen a bunch of sweaty and tired people. It was sad to drive through those poor neighborhoods in between the missions.

One of 5 Spanish Missions in San Antonio, Mission San Juan is a favorite of mine. This is an active church built in the 1700s and services are private. Located just off the San Antonio River, it is a short stroll (1.5 miles) from Mission Espada. Behind the mission, there is a short nature trail along the creek. The scene is beautiful and I would highly recommend the small loop through the woods Enjoy a bike ride to Espada Park, pack a lunch as picnic tables are available, or see the Espada Aqueduct and Dam nearby. Water fountains and restrooms are on-site.

A great mission that has seen a lot of effort in the last few years to improve it. It’s a great walking spot in a great area to ride your bike. I never got the chance to go to service like I did with the other missions but the inside is just as beautiful.

Nothing much to see (can finish within 30 min), but if you and your partner try to find a trail to walk around, this mission trail can be an ideal spot. The trail is pretty long, connected from here all the way to north till the Alamo. My advice: just drive if you just want to check out each missionaries. Or biking. Dont walk, too long.

Overall, this mission was a little different than the others we visited today. This one didnt feel the same as the others, and seemed to modernized by overall appearance.Plus, the people that live their in that home, made it seem a little awkward and out of place. The trails in back of the property were nice and well kept. So it made it worth the walk around the backside of the property. We couldnt understand why the church was closed either, all the other visited missions churchs were open.

The farm at Mission San Juan Capistrano is definitely worth checking out. This mission was founded in 1731 by Franciscan Order Spanish Catholics on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River. On November 2, they held Farm Day where you could explore the roots of San Antonio food culture from the Spanish colonial missions to modern food, health, and wellness.

Kayaking the Missions. We visited the San Juan Missions this morning to drop off our bike for the kayak pick up point. Took some investigating to find the kayak pick up point from the San Antonio River offshoot (see 1st picture). We did finally find the Blue Cement marker at the pick up point (see 3rd picture) although the hike to the water (2nd picture) and pickup point were a little overgrown. We then drove to Roosevelt Park to start our own Kayak the Missions Tour! Would do it again with a sit on top kayak or sit in kayak only if we had a water splash skirt for it.

Much quieter, and does a better job of educating about what life was like during the period these were built- much better than the alamo, more chill. This is one of the smaller missions that are part of the National Park System (and a World Heritage Site). The church is still operational, but only for scheduled masses. Unlike the other missions, the church doors are locked up when mass is not happening. This means you aren’t able to go inside and view the beauty inside. This is due to some thefts of historical religious artifacts and that’s a crying shame.Make sure you read the signage and find the resting place of some of the American Indians that lived and worked here. There is an interesting story about this. Several remains had been excavated many years ago and studied by various universities, etc. but a federal law was passed that gave any one in possession of the remains 10 years to return them to the mission. Many remains have been returned and have been reburied, but the mission is still waiting for the return of remains from several other universities.

This mission is one of the 5 frontier missions built by Spanish missionaries in the early 18th century and now designated as UNESCO heritage sites. Compared to the Alamo, Mission Conception and Mission San Jose in the north, Mission San Juan is much quieter thanks to its more remote location, and is also smaller and simpler. Mission San Juan is 7 miles south of the Alamo and 3 miles south of Mission San Jose. For those travelling on public transport, bus 40 goes from the Alamo to Mission San Juan via Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose every 30 minutes, 7 days a week. (I bought a day pass for $2.75 on the VIA goMobile app, which allowed unlimited bus rides in San Antonio.) Mission San Juan is the terminus of bus 40. If you want to go to Mission Espada further south, you have to change bus at Mission San Juan. From Mission Espada, the bus goes back to the Alamo via Mission San Juan, Mission San Jose and Mission Concepcion.Among the 5 missions, Mission San Juan looks the newest thanks to a major restoration in 2012. The exterior is covered in lime plaster, giving it a white and smooth look unlike the battered and exposed exterior of the other 4 missions. The interior is also restored and is (to my surprise) air-conditioned. The whole mission compound is quite small and can be viewed in less than half an hour. The nearest mission, Mission Espada, is just 1.5 miles further south along the San Antonio River. If you miss the southbound bus or if you want to exercise, you can walk to Mission Espada in 30 minutes. The path is mostly flat and is suitable for wheels. The path from Mission San Juan to the river (~10 minutes) is shaded by vegetation, while the remaining path is unshaded. Bring an umbrella if the weather is hot and sunny.

Most people fail to walk the trails behind the Mission. There is lovely wildlife there and sitting areas near the river. The trails are easy for small children. There are public restrooms near the public parking. Even though the gates close, you can still walk the grounds around the Mission to take photos. The walls to this Mission have been preserved by cement, so refrain from sitting and standing on them. The rock breaks off quite easily. Its a shame that efforts were not taken long ago to preserve the frail walls. Espada Park is nearby and has many picnic tables if you fancy an outdoor Bar B Q. Its nice to hang out near the river and relax.
