The memorial for the victims of the witch trials who were hung at this location is not at the actual hanging site. The hangings probably took place around on the other side of the little house, overlooking the Walgreens. The memorial itself is very low key and stylistically ties in to the main memorial in Salem. A nice place to visit for a few minutes of quiet meditation and remembrance.
Was very interesting. The feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. Actually brang me so much sadness I started to tear up and I fully can understand the heavy feeling of sadness and anger .It was a experience i will never forget. The magnitude of emotions is of deep depths and layers of all kinds of emotions flooding my being. I am deeply sorry the lives of so many innocent were taken..
A beautiful site to remember the innocent lost. Many Salem residents will not tell you where it is, but we thought it was important to visit. One of the only actual historical sites in the city connected to the Salem Witch Trials. Everything else has been raised. This is an important site, make sure to bring flowers for those lost.
If you are visitng Salem and want to pay your respects to the innocent lives stolen by the Salem Witch Trials, this is meaningful spot to visit. It is a memorial monument but it isnt heavily trafficked; sadly, this is because I think most people dont know it exists. Its just a few minutes outside the main area but it is listed as the actual location where the victims were executed.
Well, no one actually wants you to see it. The monument was an afterthought, and you cant park anywhere near it. (Honestly, the CVS down the street has no parking signs in front of actual parking spaces.) Better to go see the victims memorial in Danvers.
Seeing the actual places where events took place is important. Of course it is much changed. Limited parking.
This place is new to us. Pretty cool memorial to visit. Didnt get to walk in woods cause it was dusk.
Not exciting but really cool to see it.
Its humbling to stand where others died the sorrow and pain stain this place but all in all it was amazing to experience salem and the hanging spot
Solemn and peaceful area to truly honor the dead.
Its in a weird area but its worth stopping by if youre visiting the historical sites of Salem.
Quiet, clean, moving memorial to these innocent folks who were killed by their own community. All the more poignant for being in a residential neighborhood. Blink and youll miss it. Bring a coin, a candle, a decoration, or other small offering to leave in remembrance.
It was just a sober historical spot. I felt sad being there but it is a part of history
Travellers, this memorial is tucked away on a side street at the base of the hill where the accused witches were hanged. It is somber and includes names and dates of the victims but does not offer information on what happened in Danvers. Still worth the moment to remember how horrible things can get. We recommend.
It is not really a highlight of your visit to Salem. It is a bit hard to find as it is not really a place so to speak it is just part of the curb so if you have not seen the pictures what to look for then you can easily miss it. It is behind a huge electric power station (at the outskirt of the city) that you can spot from the main road. You go upwards in the twisty road a few hundred meters and you are already there. You can park at Walgreens and walk up or stop right there...Not really sure what to write about it I think the pictures are speaking for themselves. Of course the location is given so cannot complain about it but there is nothing really to look at or sit down or anything...The names are set in stone in semi circle and even that gives a feeling of a still unfinished business... a memorial for hanging all these innocent people, not really a place to sit down, walk around and think about what exactly happened here...
This monument is at the base of the location of the original Gallows Hill where many of the Salem Witch Trials executions happened. To explore park at the nearby Walgreens and walk up the road behind the monument to explore the top of the hill then work your way down to the monument itself. Very eerie place. Unnaturally quiet. Even birds and squirrels seem to avoid it.
No parking but is a beautiful historical site
It lists the names of humans who were killed during the infamous Witch Trails.
A little sad but a great bit of history
A very surreal experience
Its very small and tasteful. We stayed about 15 minutes and that seemed about right.
A quick climb to see the ridge (as per newest research) rumored to be the infamous location of the witches hangings.
Small but Serene location out of town in Salem Mass. The spot memorializes the deaths of the innocent victims of the panic of 1692.
Peaceful, well maintained memorial.
The only downside is there is no parking. Its on a tiny one way street off in the cut but it totally worth visiting. The energy here is amazing! Its clean and a nice little monument.
Easy walk to a breathtaking view.
Thoughtful place to visit.
Very intresting place to visit
I was on my way to a Samhain ritual up in the park and the procession I was in stopped to pay our respects at this new memorial just under Proctors ledge. It was beautifully crafted and a sobering reminder of what can occur when closed and frightened minds prevail.
Very haunted. Got feelings everywhere. Slightly able to sense these things. Many confirmed murders on the altars everywhere. Rituals and sacrifices at night also not allowed there at night so dont go unless u want a fine or to die at night
Beautiful memorial with lots of history. Nice place to remember and mourn.
First time seeing this and it was worth trying to find it.
Amazing visit in Salem. Thank you 9 Wells
The ancestor Im named after, Sarah Wildes, is on the wall. Nice to see her honored.
Difficult to find but important as this is where the innocent were hung over nothing more than hysteria.
Cool place
Cute little spot
This is one of the many places you need to visit while in Salem. It is a must see.
Very heavy feeling
Interesting seeing where it happened. The local government needs to buyout the neighbors to jazz up the place.
Its a really nice memorial and worth the visit. Small and in-between houses so not a long stop.
Very clean place so much history in one place highly recommend if your a history fan
Monument to the 13 people hung during the witch scare in Salem.
Beautiful and peaceful
The memorial is small but worth seeing. You can park at Walgreens and walk a short distance to the site. Behind the actual memorial is a patch of woods that is part of the empty lot that the memorial is on. Go one street over and there are signs marking it. It is undeveloped but has dirt trails. There are giant bolders and you can look down on the memorial from behind. There is an area with a large chain link fence that closes off what may be an archaelogical site. There is an opening in the fence. The story is that after they hanged the accused witches they rolled their bodies down the hill into the enclosed area. Then in the dark their familes retreived them. The lot has been empty for decades. Looks like a local play area and may have been used for drinking. You should probably have others with you. The city may develop it one day. The giant boulders are cool and you will most likely have it to yourself. Definately worth exploring.
The memorial was beautiful. With 2 garbage cans near by, which no one seemed to use
It feels weird to say i loved a memorial to such a tragedy, but my wife and i both felt it was a moving experience that was amplified by the simplicity of the monument. It was a little tricky to find, having to navigate hills, limited parking, and one way streets, but that seemed to add to the effect of finally standing there in a quiet nook, reading the names and reflecting. Definitely worth a spot on any itinerary for Salem.
Behind Walgreens. A lovely little spot, be sure to go well before dark
This place is extremely interesting considering the history of Salem; however, it’s hard to get there from downtown as there are no signs to guide you. You basically have to look it up and navigate to the place, which is located in a regular neighborhood (so it’s even more confusing). It’s worth the walk though if you are interested in knowing a bit more about the time of the trials.
Such an amazing vibe and beautiful place.
Cool place to say you visited. Exactly what you would expect it to be.
A memorial for the people that were executed during the Salem Witch trials.
Happy to see these people have a place to be remembered
Kind of a weird thing to be reviewing, but its a very pleasant and quaint memorial.
The proven place where the victims of the Salem witch trials were hung and left to not be buried. They were not allowed to have a Christan burials but some families would come back under cover to take their deceased back to be buried in unmarked graves after being given a proper burial.
While the memorial that was recently installed is very nice and thoughtful, this is hardly a tourist destination- not that it should be, but this is literally right next to modern homes and behind a Walgreens. We cant pick and choose where history happens, but visitors looking for a place of reflection would do better at the one downtown or at the Nurse homestead.
The corrected location of the Salem witch hangings. Touching memorial.
Its a lovely and quiet little park up the hill between two houses. Its all fenced in and you can look over the edge. The actual memorial is down the hill, giving a view of the ledge. A pleasant and quiet place with lots of room for pretty pictures and reflection.
A little out of the way, nothing really extraordinary. But it was impactful to consider where we were -- respectful memorial.
Its small, but definitely worth a trip to see if youre in town. Its a beautiful monument on a quiet, suburban street. You can walk there from downtown Salem if youre okay with a long-ish walk there and back - theres a lot of historic houses to see nearby if youre into that. Or, you could park at the Walgreens right near it and walk over. Either way, go see Proctors Ledge if youre in Salem.
Nice new memorial. Off the beaten path of the usual touristy areas.
Tricky to get there. Recommend parking at Walgreens and walking up.A good memorial. Rumored that the remains of the witch trials victims were left on the slope. Cool location, feels haunted (if you believe that kind of thing) worth the time to see.Deserves a bit better memorial I think.
Cool place to visit but dont expect a big parking area. Underdeveloped and quaint. The street is a one way, dont make the same mistake as me lol
This place is so calming
Beautiful little monument but feel like they should definitely have a little bit more of a monument for those people and the terrible things that happened there.
Very Interesting place roast beef around the corner go check it out
Difficult to locate if you arent familiar with the area. Its on the back side of Walgreens but on a one way street. Its a residential area and parking is limited. Otherwise, lovely location and memorial.
Very great place, we had to stop on the way out of Salem! Memorial headstones for all who lost their lives in the witch trials, a must see if you are visiting Salem!
This location is so significant in Salems history that its a shame that it isnt cleaned up. Looks like its been a dump spot over the decades and it could easily be cleaned up, landscaped and made a legitimate, small place to visit and read an informative, historical plaque for cheap money.
An emotional memorial to those who lost their lives. The town has done a great deal to honor them and embrace their history
So sad but thankful for the memorial!
My husband and I climbed the hill to take a look at this historical landmark. Women were actually hung here for witchcraft.
Located adjacent to the Walgreens near the drive thru pharmacy exit, about 40 feet from that exit point to the right. Humbling experience.... this is the location where they hung the accused witches of Salem...
Place of executions of the Witches of Salem in the 17th century
A good memorial for such a blight on the past.
11 yr old Daughter is really getting involved with history. Saw the episode of Timeless on t.v. about the Salem witch trials, and wanted to see this site.
Beautiful, small memorial for the innocent lives that were taken. A must visit.
Its okay but nothing special
Nice memorial of those that were hung. ( so Giles isnt remembered here) close to the real gallows hill
History lives here. Creepy, touching, haunting. Go.
Nobody knows for sure where the executions in Salem took place, but the current leading theory is that it was in this patch of woods, which today looks out over a Walgreens parking lot. A nice spot to pay your respects.
We drove all the way to Salem to see the site of the 1962 witch hangings but left feeling very disappointed, as there were no plaques or signs to recognize what occurred at the site. It appeared to be a neglected area in peoples yards and was a let-down for anyone who was interested in exploring the historical site.
Lovely memorial wall.
Awesome experience. A must see if visiting Salem!
A tribute to wrongfully accused people.
Went there with my school
Again, if youre into witch things, its a must see.
Just a hypothesized location of the hangings. The other memorial is more respectful.
Interesting to visit the exact spot, but not much to do except snap a picture
Not too much to look at but a pretty memorial area to see if you are already in the area.
Was so glad we found this! I really wanted to find spots where the historic events really happened!
