Not figuratively a pile of compacted dirt on top of a small hill, covered with nth generation woods. Without the helpful plaque near the bottom of the stone stairs, you would not know you were walking on ramparts from the revolutionary war.Unless you need a walker the walk to the top and the walk around the top are easy 5 and 10 minute projects from the he unmarked roadside parkingEven in spring with no leaves, the woods are dense enough to prevent the views of the town and harbour the dirt was originally pilled to create

Lots and lots of parking but still lots and lots of people visiting. Best advice is either get there early in the day or get there after 3 and afternoon during summer time and during days with festivals at Salem Willow. There are bathrooms, restaurants and games down at Salem Willow. Also it is very nice to sit and enjoy people-watching on a bench or in the grass plenty of places to walk around and in just enjoy the day!

The only Revolutionary War rampart fort still in basically its original condition. Not much to look at for non-history types, but a fascinating look at what Bunker Hill would have looked like from inside.

Great historical site but the lack of maintenance is unacceptable. Trash, overgrown vegetation, and even some human remains every now and then. If this is the best Salem can do I am not impressed. This is sacred ground keep it clean.

Yes, unfortunately the site has fallen into a state of disrepair. This was not a hastily built fort such as what was erected at Breeds Hill, but a well laid out, garrisoned fort. When you walk into the fort proper, the extension on the right is what is left of the powder magazine, which was constructed of sod brick. The ramparts were constructed with poles placed every two feet most likely with baskets of fill and clay in between. According to engravings of the fort in 1820, on the ridge outside the fort facing left and down from the fort was the wooden barracks. Pipe stems found within the fort and area show habitation from the end of the 17th century till the 1850s. Ox and horse bones and shoes, Bennington ware spitoon fragments, and irom ware have been found near the magazine.in 1975-76 brass plaques were placed at the fort( these have since disappeared. Havent been up there in years.
