Such a cool and unique experience. You can walk by awesome rapids right in downtown. One of the best experiences in Richmond!
Great experience. Narrow walkway so please be courteous to other people when they want to pass. This area is a popular attraction in summer, people get down off the walk and in the sandy beach beside the James River. Off path is some trash and homeless camps.. Ive never had a problem with them when I visit. Would love to see some beach cleanup effort. Be cautious of snakes.. they are there. Take a picture and leave them be.
Walking along the pipeline is pretty cool but Im not sure why they put an over look here, it just looks over one of the more polluted areas of the James
I love the views there very peaceful
I love this catwalk. Really neat man. If your into that type of thing. Be parpared for alittle climbing
Awesome spot to walk and watch the Blue Heron rookery and kayakers drifting through the James River rapids! Its sad to see so many homeless people living down here - they really need some housing in this city which seems to value its pubs and kitchy restaurants above anything else.
Awesome place to explore and have a nice walk
The pipeline overlook is an interesting walk. There is parking nearby for $8 a day. You enter these large metal door as shown in the photos and you turn left. There is a sign that tells you a bit about the overlook. You have to go down a short metal ladder and then you can walk on a path that follows the pipeline which gives you a nice view. There is a small beach and folks swim and fish nearby. Its a charming way to escape from the city. The last piece of the walk had no railing but there is a nice small waterfall at the end. This walk is not great for invalids or small children. You would need to hold on to little ones. Its a short walk which is about 15 minutes long. Worth checking out!
Find the entrance to the stairs just east of the overlook. Ignore the warning signs that say danger falling objects from the tracks above can cause injury or death and get ready for a great experience. You literally walk on top of an old pipeline for what seems like an absurdly long time and there are areas where it is over the water. There are rapids and all sorts of wonderful architecture and views. Theres a spot where it comes close to the ground and you can climb off it and walk to the shore and watch the Rapids go by. Further out the fence disappears and you just walk top of the pipe with nothing to hold onto. What a great experience .
Great place to take a little hike. It used to be a lot cooler when more abandoned places were on the river bank and the hipsters didn’t know about this place but it’s still nice to check out if you can find a time when the people without jobs aren’t hanging out and doing whatever it is they do while not working . Check it out and enjoy the photo ops and lovely sound of the river !
Its a great place to fish or just relax on the beach
Very cool! Its literally a pipe you walk across. Be cautious during rainy weather. The pipe can be covered by the water making it dangerous to walk across the part without railings.
The view and ability to walk around tp Browns and Belle Isle
Great place to walk, take photos and enjoy the view
Fun little trail hidden in Shockoe Bottom. Especially go after a rain when the water is high!
Ok view......worth a peek if your on the canal walk.
Great place to clear the my mind
A sweet place to free your mind
Awesome murals!
I dont sleep here, stop askin
This was a beautiful get away in the heart of RVA. Had a wonderful day just taking in the beautiful James River.
The sunset you want with out the ladder
Pretty cool to see especially when the water is really moving through there
Really cool short walk right in the city.
Really cool walkway over the pipeline. Today the water is really high!
Interesting part of Richmond. I wouldnt put it in the category of family friendly, but if youre with a group of friends, it might be a fun idea to check this place out. The walk is narrow, and the people that hang out in this area can be kind of strange, but if that doesnt bother you, go for it.
Cool little area to relax for an afternoon. Theres a beautiful great blue her on that fishes and lives at the end with the ladder we get close to.
Beautiful place
Cool. A little scary. Kinda dangerous. Careful with your car keys.
Passed through here to access the Pipeline Trail. Loved it. Absolutely beautiful.
Best place to fish and just get away like stepping out of the city
Nice view
Great day to be on the pipeline. River boisterous and path eventually impassable.
Very cool experience to be walking across the water!
Nice place to walk around
Absolutely stunning! A must-do for everyone who travels to this area.
Awesome interesteing kinda hidden spot! I love exploring this type of places in the world. Various birds looking for fish. Sometimes watch kayaking. Also good only few people on the day. Be careful when passing by walkers from opposite side (seems one way though)
Really beautiful to walk through this town and imagine what it could have e been like hundreds of years ago... the history is overwhelming and the city has kept some of that magic while building present day around it, like cobble stone roads, buildings from centuries ago... walk the city and see the treasures.
Fun and clean
Nice way to see nature inside the city
I love this place. Nice views, great for phsical activity and recreation.
This is the first time I have visited this area of Richmond after living within 30 minutes my whole life. Very beautiful setting that is well maintained with several historical medallions in the sidewalk telling about the industrial heritage of the city and various key figures. Highly recommend. Bring your pets, bike, or just walk and hold hands with you special someone.
Skip the overlook and continue downstream on thr dirt road until you find the trail down to the actual pipe. Walk the pipe as far as you want. Look for wild life and kayakers. We saw snakes, crawfish and fish spawn.
This was a nice a nice hidden gem which we discovered while exploring Richmond Virginia. You have to pay for parking! Make sure to wear sensible shoes (sneakers) because to access the area requires some trekking down a ladder and walking along the pipes. This is not for height conscious individuals or fearful travelers. Lets just say if youre adventurous you will love it. You can explore the overlook, jump from the pipes into the water, or simply enjoy a hot sunny day by relaxing on shore or in the water. There are also hidden paths which you cam take to access other areas. This was a great find. Enjoy!!!
Highly recommend. Look out for a group of three men in a black shirt, a tie dye shirt and an green shirt if you are alone as a female. They watched me and some other girl for I dont even know how long sun tanning. One of the times we made eye contact they all walked away quickly but I saw them numerous times in one hour so please keep your guard ladies!!!
Looked great, but not very accessible
Its beautiful!!! The sunset is amazing from this view
If you have never walked this, it is a real treat for outdoor lovers in the heart of the city. On the pipeline you can see a bunch of wildlife and get a more wilderness view of the river. You will commonly see blue herrings, Hawks, fish, the occasional snake, sunbathers, and more. Its a little hard to find the entrances, but once you do its worth the trip. A tip - wear hiking shoes or sneakers as you walk on a metal grate or some hiking depending on where you get on the trail.
Great views of the river and a cool spot in the shade. There is also access to beach areas along the James from the pipeline walkway.
This is a hidden gem. Great place for bird viewing. This walk way can be scary.. And the river can be quite high at times, and that can make the trail with limited access.
Great spot to go visit. Get there early in the morning to find a good spot on the beach
The Mrs and I took a canal boat cruise and walked along the pipeline trail in downtown Richmond. We had lunch at Legend Brewery as well. It was a good day for an outing.
Love the pipeline, quite and out of the way of most visitors to the river. Be careful of snakes
Husbands favorite place to enjoy a relaxing walk along the James River
A creepy ladder to climb but nice view
Great spot to check out the River!
I observed it from my kayak, kinda secluded.
This is a seriously hidden excursion, but totally cool. Little scary to do in the rain like we did, but still a fun adventure!
Nice walk and spot on the river. Cleaned up alot from what it used to be with plenty of near by parking. Been coming here since we used to scale the walls of the old mill and explore. Of course now its just another apartment/ condo building on the James.
Scenic, not crowded, relatively easy to access. Whats not to like‽‽
Very lovely view.
Pretty amazing views! I would recommend going after its been dry a few days. Weve been a few times now and it rained really bad the night before one of our pipeline trips and the water was so high it was coming up over the pipeline. Be careful if you venture out pass the handrails. You can go all the way through if the water is not high. This place is always a must when we visited Richmond!
Beautiful scenery. Definitely must see if visiting or live in rva
20 good walking minutes, relaxing
You can actually climb down to that pipe and walk along the river. Neato.
Slightly challenging access to the river at the old street car hydro electric power station but a nice easy hike on top of the pipeline with places to hang out by the river and watch rafters go by. Also plenty of wild birds and fish. Good fishing area. Swift current.
One of my favorite places in the city.
Very cool spot! Narrow single-track walking path hovers just over the river, and parts may be covered with water during high-water events. The pipeline passes a heron rookery, so keep your eyes peeled for the great blue heron fishing along the rapids. A small ladder leads down to the pipeline, and parts of the walk have no handrail, so watch your step! Not suitable for very young kids.
One of my favorite spots, such a great place to walk and explore.
Nice place. A little dangerous for a 5 year old to visit. We walked above the pipes over the water. Nice spot. But if you do it once that would be enough.
Very interesting view of the James River ad it flows by downtown Richmond. At higher water levels Pipeline rapid is something to see. The trail is a bit skinny so there are times when oncoming hikers need to negotiate their way around one another. Also worth noting is a short ladder climb at the downriver end of the trail. Its about 7 or 8 feet -- not hard, but requires some very basic ladder skills to use.
Gives you a unique view of Richmond. Downside is other people fish off of and walk down the catwalk too. Requires you to become a little bit more familiar, than youd like to get past them.
Love the peaceful walk and view
Beautiful view. Make sure you go during low tide so you can travel the entire trail
A nice walk by the water. NOT pet friendly, unless you have a small dog you can carry the entire walk. Its a narrow walkway and part of it doesnt have any railing. Will definitely visit again.
Our family enjoyed walking this pipeline on our recent vacation. You have to climb down a ladder to get to it. Most of it has railings on each side, but there is a part of the trail that does not have any railings. We past people who were swimming and relaxing by the river. It looked like a lot of fun.
Great place to escape the heat in downtown RVA!
A great place to walk in Richmond!
This is a vary cool walk over the river. The part without the railing was pretty intimidating being about 8 feet over the river. You would not want to fall, even though you probably wouldnt die. People swim and raft and tube.
It is a great place to walk. It was my first time a couple days ago and the view is amazing. Walking cross the flood wall was just something you have to-do for yourself.
This walk is unique and amazing close to the wild James River
This is a hidden gem, less hidden than it used to be, but its a great spot to see the river and wildlife without leaving the City. Less populated than the Canal walk during lunch, its like an oasis. Not recommended for running or small kids as theres an eight rung metal ladder to descend to the pipeline, and the surface is a metal grate for more than half the distance.
Nice walking, hiking area rhat provides a very exciting view of good artwork and the james
I enjoy the views, and the walkthrough.
I love this spot, areas in the river
Cool closeup views of the James River Rapids on the Pipeline!
Nice little spot
One of my favorite non-typical adventures in downtown RVA. Like an industrial-nature path underneath the train viaduct on the rivers North shore. Finding the trailhead is part of the fun. Be careful when the river is swollen, this walk will be unpassible.
A wonderful experience every time I visit. There is a lack of parking, but it you are there early enough you can snag one of the 7 parking spots. This is where I go to swim. There are often many families here during the Summer because this is their place to go swim as well. During the off season I will see many hikers start here and complete the North Bank Trail. Also, watching the water after a storm is a very neat experience. Be careful though and stay on the grates.
Super cool short walk
Wish there was lights but great time
Awesome place to explore. Careful of flooding after heavy rain.
Wonderful fishing spot worlds first hydroelectric plant powered trolley car system right there
Not well maintained but has a good view of the arts and culture in Richmond
