One of my favorite places in town. Beautiful every time of year watch the seasons, weathering and aging each moment and area as lovely as the next
I cannot believe it would show up on Google with less than 5 stars! Significantly historical, Jefferson Davis, John Tyler and James Monroe are buried here. All within a few hundred yards of each other! And, what a beautiful walk overlooking the James River! Slap yourself if you pass this historical marker, free never felt this good!
I love cemetries. Even more so for cemetries with simultaneous river and city skyline view.
This Cemetery is very beautiful. It has many interesting head stones and serves as the resting place for many prominent historical figures such as Presidents John Tyler and James Monroe and an innumerable amount of confederate soldiers and the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis and prominent Confederate General J.E.B Stuart.
Beautiful place! So much larger than I imagined. Very easy to spend hours there.
This cemetery has lot of historical figures final resting place after Arlington National Cemetery. It is nice to drive your car rather than walking uphill and nice view of James River. James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Daviss final resting place. Must visit while in Richmond area.
We were here to see the final resting place of US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It was cold during our visit so we abandoned our initial plan of walking and just drove around, using the faint blue line painted on the side of the road as guide. There are no admission or parking fees.We parked temporarily near Daviss tomb. His is quite prominent with a statue and was thus easy to locate. We missed Presidents Circle, site of both Monroe and Tylers mausoleums, on our first drive by and had to ask for directions. When we finally found it, we parked nearby and stayed for 20 minutes. A short distance from there is a scenic lookout with fantastic views of downtown Richmond and James River. Our entire visit lasted 40 minutes. This was a good experience overall and wed recommend it to anyone visiting Richmond.
I have been here several times and have gotten lost each timeThere are three President buried there. Monroe, Tyler, and Jefferson Davis. There are numerous confederate generals and soldiers. Most outstanding of the generals are Fitzhugh Lee and George Puckett. There most famous statue is of a dog who is standing guard over a little girlLots of confederate soldiers with flags. There is a large stone structure honoring the 18000 confederate dead . Beautiful setting overlooking the James River
During this covid 19 times, the Hollywood cemetary is a good option. We drove by the tombstones. No tours available but lots of information online. It is clean. Nicely maintained. There were a few people walking but the place is so large (130 acres) that you dont bump into people.
Beautiful and historic place to explore, stroll, photograph and run. Especially in the fall.
So much history here! Wonderful place to walk around!
A very nice and calm place to visit. If you love visiting cemeteries like I do, this place is a must. Very well kept up, a little easy to get lost in but it makes a great story. Just a magnificent place, great history.
Beautiful, historical park like cemetery with graves of multiple Richmond notable figures & 2 US president’s. Lovely views overlooking the James River. Makes for a great urban hike. For fans of the civil war it’s a must see as it has a large confederate section along with the grave of Jefferson Davis (not in the confederate section) & his family. Many beautifully carved graves including faux bois style, figural, & obelisks. A must see for native Richmonders & visitors alike
So cool! Cant wait to go back and spend more time.
I walked through this beautiful cemetery, and felt a peace that I havent felt in a very long time. The atmosphere was so quiet and timeless. A glimpse into eternity can be experienced here, and it quiets the soul.
Amazing place. Peaceful and beautiful. I like to walk into the gardends and enjoy the beautiful day . Totally recommend.
My friends and I stopped here while touring haunted locations in VA. We expected it to be a quick stop, but we ended up here for several hours, enjoying the history, the trees, the various plots and monuments, and the sprawling grounds; we kept expecting to get to the end only to crest another hill to more. It is a very nice-looking cemetery to visit, with the river right nearby and the hills. The monuments are well kept, and the grounds are relatively easy to explore on foot or by car (we did a bit of both). I recommend it.Skeptics go no further.I also had my most significant ghost experiences ever here. I felt sick to my stomach several different times for the span of maybe a minute each, I smelled rot a few times, I heard rustling and thumping in closed crypts, I felt chills, and I distinctly felt something wrap around my forearm, like being gripped by a hand. My friends even noticed marks on my arm afterward. Skeptics will make of that what they will; I put it at the end of the review for the sake of people who just want to visit the site and dont believe in the paranormal. If youre into that, though, that can be another reason to visit.
Wonderful history ... This is a stop everytime our family is in Richmond
Great history of the confederate soldiers, Confederate President and two former Presidents of the United States being buried there.
Hollywood Cemetery is best know for being the burial location of three people: James Monroe, John Tyler, and Jefferson Davis (and a whole bunch of confederate soldiers). However, locally, it best know for three ghost stories: The Little Girl and her Dog, the crying Pyramid, and the Richmond Vampire.Plus, to the dismay of the fine ground keepers at Hollywood Cemetery, its almost a Richmond tradition to sneak into the cemetery at night. FYI: If you do get caught, you can be arrested and face huge fines.
Such a beautiful place for rest. Took a drive through the winding paths, spent time in reverence around the graves of the more notable buried there. SO much art in the tombstones and grave sites. Very enjoyable afternoon.
Unique place to explore. We love walking with our dog. Beautiful views of the James River and city.
Such a beautiful place for rest. Took a drive through the winding paths, spent time in reverence around the graves of the more notable buried there. SO much art in the tombstones and grave sites. Very enjoyable afternoon.
Historical place of burial next to the James River.
Awesome historic and beautiful place!
Not an ordinary cemetery; instead, youll find beautiful, shaded walking trails that bring you to scenic overlooks of the river and the Richmond skyline while surrounded with amazingly landscaped and detailed granite gave markers and stone mausoleums. Its really beautiful here and almost too large to cover in a day of hiking. You can drive through or take your bike. If biking, there are off-road trails that take you down to the river. If walking, there are plenty of shaded areas and benches to rest. There are lots of elevation changes so keep that in mind if you are bringing children or the elderly. There are walking tours (for a fee) most every day at 10am. Very cool place!
Absolutely beautiful cemetery! I love to walk around, enjoy the quiet, nature and read the old head stones. The architecture is very impressive. A lovely place to relax and discover some history.
I love walking through here and checking out the older graves. Definitely a cool place to stop by! If you do not want to walk, you can drive through instead! I recommend wearing comfy shoes if you choose to walk, there is a lot of inclines.
Ill admit Im a bit of a history nerd. This tour tickles all the right spots. You get to learn a lot about not only famous dead people from Norfolk, but Victorian-era cemeteries in general. There are a lot of beautiful memorials in Elmwood Cemetery that have interesting stories. It would be a steal at twice the price (its only a $5 recommended donation!) Excellent tour and a beautiful cemetery. I will definitely be back for the other themed tours they offer. Donations go to the Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation and are used directly to care for the grounds, stones, and monuments. Wear comfortable shoes and bring some water if its hot.
We went on an unseasonably warm December day. Hollywood Cemetery feels more like a beautiful, historical park than a cemetery. It is a history buffs dream with lots of historical figures buried there. We walked for about 90 minutes and enjoyed the views over the river, large trees and gorgeous monuments. While we did not bring our dogs, we saw many, on leash, walking the grounds. It had poured the night before and we were a bit concerned about standing water making our trek muddy but Hollywood Cemetery has paved paths and even when we walked to the monuments, the ground was not muddy at all. Bring a bottle of water and wear a good pair of shoes. The paths are hilly but not steep. You will get a good workout. If you are visiting Richmond, be sure to check it out and if you live in Richmond, go often. It is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon.
Very historic well-kept cemetery park with open paved roads for strolling or biking. Final resting place for presidents and offering stunning views of the James River.
Retry cool place. Fun visit. Need to come back to do a Ghost Tour.
This cemetery is definitely worth a visit. There are some unusual and interesting finds. The views of the James River are spectacular from parts of the cemetery. The monuments are interesting and old. Quite a few well known people are buried here; two former presidents, Jefferson Davis to name a few.
Hollywood Cemetery is a beautiful, historical cemetery with the first burial in 1848. The back portion of the cemetery is the confederate memorial and along river youll find the graves of Presidents Monroe and Tyler, and Jefferson Davis. The cemetery is a great place to walk with some of the most beautiful tombstones youll ever see. Be sure to look out for the puppy statues!
Historical park and a very nice and calm place.
I have been to Hollywood Cemetery numerous times and I always see something new each time I go. It is especially spooky at Halloween time. I am amazed at the number of beautiful trees that are there, some of which are original (designed in 1847). Among many other famous residents, this is the final resting place of U.S. Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler. There is an impressive 90 foot Pyramid monument to the 18,000 Confederate War Dead buried in the cemetery. Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy is also buried there. There are many fabulous views of the James River, which has, for eons, carried the tops of Blue Ridge mountains downstream to create tidewater Virginia. This is a must see when visiting Richmond.
Just a beautiful place to spend time. The peaceful energy is amazing. So much history and the landscape is spectacular!
Such an incredibly beautiful venue to walk and remember the past. The grounds are breathtaking and the historical figures interred here are awesome. I had no idea two American presidents are here. The grounds have a beautiful sweeping view of the River James. I felt honored to peruse through the grounds.
Picturesque hilltop views of the James. Full of history and local folklore.
I love this cemetery. There are so many interesting and historic personages buried here. I could walk around here for hours. It puts one in a contemplative mood of course, and I always bring small rocks to lay on the graves I stop by as a token of visit (per Jewish tradition). I like to spend time by the graves of the Davis family and the Jewish Confederate monument. A number of US presidents buried here too.
A great place to do a photoshoot for your War Metal band
Great place to walk around on a crisp fall day!
Amazing. Very beautiful and peaceful. Very large place for walking, drive some of it. Interesting place for history.
I discovered this place as a teenager back in the 70s, and practiced my Black & White photography on the endless fascinating burial accommodations. It is scenic, historic, and filled with lots of things you have never seen before. But I wouldnt want to spend the night there.(Originally posted to Yelp 10-12-2015)
Beautiful place to spend a long walk or get a good dose of historical appreciation. Its nearby the Oregon Hill neighborhood of Richmond and the North Bank Trail that follows the James River, so its great to walk through on your way there. Beautiful, well kept greenery and paths.
Beautiful, quiet, sad. Great views
This place is so cool!!!! i had no idea a cemetery could be so big! it would take you forever to walk around this, highly recommend driving. awesome place!
Beautiful cemetery that is very well kept. Definitely an interesting place to visit, and it has a nice view of the James River.
Ive toured a few cemeteries including Cimetiere du Père Lachaise in Paris and the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington. Several others which were not as historic as Hollywood including Albany Rural Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood definitely gets points for history and a beautifully landscaped grounds. Solumn and grand.
Amazing cemetery to drive, or walk, around. This cemetery is huge, with so many old, incredibly artistic tombstones. Two presidents, John Tyler and James Madison, are buried here. The view of the James river from the top of the hill where the presidents are buried, is picturesque. Overall, do not miss the opportunity to check this place out.
Absolutely gorgeous place. If youre a civil war history nut, this is the place for with over 18,000 soldiers buried on the grounds (as well as two presidents). Its a very peaceful, respectful place to go and observe the beauty of death. However, its not the most accessible place to visit and several interesting features are on very steep inclines, but not all. Will visit again.
Great views of the city with lots of history.
This place is beautiful. I like to walk down it’s winding pathways and look at the structures built way before my time and from a different time. The pyramid makes it seem from a different place and the history of the place is awesome
Its odd to review a cemetery, but here we are. Going simply from a visitor-standpoint, theres a lot to see! The grounds are expansive, and there are so many different types of headstones to see. There are also lots of graves of historical significance, and Hollywood Cemetery is even home to Richmonds most famous urban legend, the Hollywood Cemetery Vampire.
The self guided tours were a little confusing, multiple arrows/lines and colors. Walking will take a while but driving you might miss something. We also didnt see any restrooms. But it was free so that was nice.
Beautifully landscaped and maintained with easy access by vehicle at your leisure. Wonderful views of the river and the city can be found alongside the James and fantastic pieces of history and memorial across the sprawling lawns edging the City of Richmond. It would be nice to have more readily available access to information regarding the history behind many of the memorials for those who choose to tour at their leisure.
I have to admit, there are few places with the variety of shops as as the Carytown district in Richmond. Its a very eclectic area with some of the most unusual and neat shops Ive not seen anywhere else. Theres a very nice little chocolate shop where they make their own little chocolates have all types. Very very good chocolate. They sell a very wide variety of other brands of pre-packaged chocolate too!
Beautiful cemetery full of history overlooking the James River. Kudzu grows all over the overlook.
Some of the most iconic scenes of Richmond are surprisingly located at Hollywood cemetery. If by chance you haven’t had an opportunity to go then don’t miss your chance. My recommendation, take advantage of the local Segway tour. Hollywood cemetery can be quite a bit hilly and difficult to navigate on foot. However if you’re looking for a great run then you should challenge yourself to this route. Have fun!
A lot of people dont seem to know this, but Hollywood is a fully functioning cemetery, and they are amazing. When my brother died completely unexpectedly at only 35 years old last year, Woody and Mabel in the front office took such incredible care of me and my family. Woody even managed to make us smile on the day my brother died, the same day we picked his plot, which was the truly the worst, most devastating day of my life. And everything was perfect, everything was just the way we discussed it should be, on the day we buried him. I commend Woody & Mabel, and Hollywood, for being such a spot of beautiful in the face of tragedy. Thank you for taking such amazing care of us and for continuing to take such wonderful care of my brother.
Hollywood Cemetery is attractive and peaceful. It is pleasant for walking or jogging. Presidents James Madison and John Tyler are buried there. For Civil War enthusiasts, there is a Confederate section.
The most beautiful cemetery in Richmond!
I feel slightly awkward rating a cemetery because this isnt Google Graves or whatever. But as a tourist location (which its marketed to be) its a pretty nice one, I suppose. The overlook from the far side to the river is gorgeous and the variety of famous people buried within make it an historic trip. If youre into ghosts and legends, youll get that here too.
Amazing cemetery tours
Must see when visiting Richmond. Especially in the spring. Beautiful grounds where you can walk or drive. There is an enormous amount of history here. If you are a Civil War buff, check out the final resting place of President Davis and General Pickett among others.
Many fine soldiers are buried here.
Its pretty but I cant find anyone from Holly wood wheres Brad Pitt
One of the most beautifully scenic locations I have seen in Richmond or anywhere in Virginia for that matter. The landscape is varied, with lots of slopes and hills for a stimulating hike through time as you marvel at the headstones and ornaments built throughout the last two centuries adorning the graves. Lots of shade on a hot day, and bathrooms/AC available to visitors upon entrance to the Cemetery. The views overlooking the river are to die for! No pun intended...a must-visit for anybody wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and take in some beautiful and serene scenery.
Huge place with 2 dead presidents and a few other cool attractions which can be mostly driven to. Recommend
One of my favorite places to walk in Richmond. Always beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. Incredible stonework to admire and fascinating historical value. Feels surreal in the fall.
Not only is Hollywood Cemetery an historically significant place, the burial location of several U. S. Presidents (Monroe, Tyler) and other notables, it is also a beautiful, peaceful, setting in which to meander and contemplate each ones eternal destiny. Well worth a visit.
Im a fan. Its one of the must-sees in Richmond. Its a historic, huge cemetery with much history. Two US Presidents (Monroe and Tyler) are buried there, Jefferson Davis, and many governors. On top of that, its a beautiful view of Richmond and its waterfront. The cemetery is, of course, free.
Im often troubled by those that imagine everyone buried in places like these died for the cause of racism and with hatred in their hearts.I have no delusions some did. I however am torn to judge such long dead souls when looking through the lense as a combatant with blood on my hands, for the sake of my Presidents motives 130 years later. Dead for their freedom of association is the same dead as dead for an economy or dead for the advancement or oppression of a religion.
Always a joy to admire all of the beautiful history and views of the James river are breathtaking here
An interesting place to bring the children. Great view and history
Very interesting place to visit, especially for history buffs. This is a place that most Richmonders dont see. but really should. Take a morning or afternoon and walk the grounds. Youll be amazed.
I absolutely adore this place! All the beautiful flags and monuments are out of this world! Salute!
Presidents Monroe and Tyler are buried here in Presidents Circle. The cemetery is beautiful with beautiful views of the river. They have 90 minute walking tours or you can walk or drive yourself around. There are some beautiful tombstones and lots of confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. If you like cemeteries this is one I would highly recommend. It was exceptionally beautiful with all the spring flowers. -Travelationship
A really fun half day trip from downtown Richmond, the cemetery has great views of the river and city, interesting headstones, history tours, and several notable and infamous politicians.
Beautiful site, over the most challenging stretch of James River Rapids. Very hilly. Gorgeous Victorian monuments, many with stories of the lives and deaths of the buried. Fine place to walk (hike, really) for humans and dogs. The Confederate section is heartbreaking, with rows and rows of numbered stones for the unnamed and unknown dead, and gravestones whose dates mark the records of vicious battles around Richmond.
A tucked away little cemetery that is great for walks. Entrance if free and you will rarely see other people. Just be warned, the roads are not in the best condition.
Wonderful place, especially along the James River. Lots of history here
Well maintained, great historic importance.
Beautiful cemetery, very well kept, fascinating people buried here. Recommend the walking tour to learn some interesting facts.
A lovely, historic place, well kept and maintained. A good place to go for a restful, contemplative walk.
Beautiful and Serene
Perfect place to pay your respects to the Greatest Leaders of The War Between the States. God Bless them all.
Interesting placr for history buffs. Just remember to be respectful.
This Cemetery is absolutely beautiful. The only thing is the actual address is 401, not 412. Make sure you put in 401 to get to the right entrance!
Really cool cemetery, it has some very important historical figures from the ACW such as Jefferson Davis resting here. A lot of interesting people have been laid to rest here.
Although this is my first cemetery rating, Hollywood is one of the best. Beautiful and unique headstones as well as a stunning view of the James River.
Hauntingly beautiful - definitely worth a stroll through. Also a wonderful view of the city from its highest hills.
Sensational for Photo shoots. Beautiful Cemetary That Has Several Famous People Burried In It.
Neat little cemetery with a lot of history. Only downside is that there are no maps and its easy to get yourself lost. Other than that its very good.
Hollywood Cemetery is a gem that should be seen by residents and visitors alike. Two presidents, 6 Virginia Govenors, and thousands of confederate soldiers are buried at the cemetery. It is supposedly also haunted with lore of a different ghosts on site, including the Richmond Vampire.
