My favorite bridge. Built in 1912!An amazing piece of American engineering. Lots of chill spots if youre on LSD the Mushies and or need to roll bluntages.
Trains and pedestrians on the bottom deck, cars and trucks above, Probably one of the oldest bridges in Portland
Beautiful view of the NATO waterfront. Although this was taken during the Portland fires and the smoke was so thick you could not see across to the other side of the river. There are no filters or special effects used here on these photos, this orange and brown hue is what is in the air at the time of the Oregon fires.
Good for walk n gazing through the river
Sometimes a lower crosswalk is closed be prepared to walk some stairs
It’s a nice remeberence if things that where built to last!!!!
The steel bridge is an amazing place for a fild trip and an amazing and perfect for walks and swims. I LOVE THIS BRIDGE.
I like how the pedestrian pathway is at sidewalk level, meaning that you dont have to walk up and down stairs to cross this bridge (unlike the Hawthorne bridge for example) having that lower level though means that sometimes it needs to raise to let tall boat traffic through. It looks interesting and vintage.
We are so lucky living in an area that has such magnificent bridges! Portland is definitely unique and wonderful.Crossing the Willamette River, Steel Bridge carries some amazing distinctions. Since it carries almost all types of traffic, I think the biggest distinction is that it is one of the most multimodal bridges in the world! Which certainly fits with Portland being such an eco-conscious City. And it is the only double-deck bridge with independent lifts in the world! And overall it is very unique looking.
Better than Hawthorne. Or any bridge.
What can be said? Its a bridge made out of steel. And it does a damn fine job of spanning the river and allowing trains to continue their journeys.
This bridge is so unique and a pleasure to run or walk on anytime! If you are lucky enough to catch a train up close and personal that is definitely a cool experience. This bridge is just another amazing architectural bridge they have in their resume. I love the bridges in this city and they are all a joy to walk over and look at everything below and surrounding!Visit this whenever you can!
Got me across the river....
Ironically this bridge is made entirely of iron (a word that makes up the first 4 letters of ironic). To be honest I dont actually know if its made of steel, but the name is strongly suggestive. Easy bridge to cross on your bike, and the North end of the waterfront walking/biking route.
The Steel Bridge has an extensive history in Portland. It is owned by the railroad and maintained by the railroad. Its a double-decker Bridge with rail on the bottom along with bike and foot traffic paths and the upper deck is for automobiles and is the main line for the light-rail heading downtown.Long before Interstate 5 was opened up front Avenue in Portland was the main artery Road for traffic going north and south and Front Avenue pathway extended up and over the Steel Bridge turning into Interstate Avenue and you followed Interstate Avenue all the way up past Paul Bunyan and it would take you to the Columbia River Crossing at Jantzen Beach. The Steel Bridge is one of my favorite bridges in Portland for many reasons but the most important is when I came with my family from Japan in 1959 my dad drove his old Buick and I remember crossing the big black scary Bridge that to a five-year-old looked like a scary monster. Little did I know that when I went to work for the USDA I did photographic work for the Louis Dreyfus elevator next to the bridge and I got permission to go to the very top of one of the high points and take photographs from atop The Steel Bridge and let me tell you the view from there is one in a million.Portland is a very unique town with the 13 Bridges crossing the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The city of Portland and everything about it makes it a true gem!
My favorite bridge in bridge city. Especially because it connects the 2 waterfront parks downtown with a great pedestrian/bike paths. You can walk on both the upper and lower decks for different perspectives on the city and river. Beautiful at sunset!
Vintage Bridge, great look over the city, but also an amazing work of the past, train rails, bridge lift, great connection for crossing over the Willamette River
Dont get caught on there with a crazy person lol
Really interesting bridge, nice views too, B-
Its a beautiful place with a wonderful view of several areas of Portland. During the day time there normally is alot of friendly people around but at night time it can be a not so very safe or healthy place to be. I recommend not being down there after dark
Industrial! Utilitarian! Old rusty piece of work. Lots of bike traffic below. Connects nothing to nothing per my objective if you walk.
Nervous driving over this bridge it needs replaced or retrofitted badly. Look carefully at it when on the walkway and you will become way more nervous about it.
I love walking and riding my bike across this bridge. For pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge is bi-leveled, so you can choose to go over the higher or lower level of the bridge. It also looks pretty cool when the bridge raises up and lowers for large boats and ships to come through. From a distance, this bridge is kinda intimidating and foreboding looking, compared to all the other Portland bridges, but I dig it!
One old bridge but I feel safer on it than some of the others!
One of the many bridges in Portland that you need to cross take a car, a train, just cross it however you can to see the views!
Great way to get to the other side of the river on my power walk along the promenade. Keep your wits about you, runners and bicyclists abound - sometimes at high speeds.
Very good, very Steel bridge.
What can you say about an old bridge? Is it earthquake safe?Should this be replaced? It isnt beautiful.
Very huge steel monster. Its pretty old. It was built in 1912. I was surprised about its vertical-lift of middle section. But, unfortunately, I didnt get that time when this section is lifting up. Its second oldest bridge in North America. And its bridge history
Beautiful & historic steel railroad bridge.
Really calm and quiet. Very beautiful
Was cool the park is beautiful and the place is always cooler on hot days
Its a nice place to visit with great views of th willamete and Portland waterfront. Nice place to capture photos of SP 4449 crossing. Also nice walking bridge. Upper level has traffic and max.
Very beautiful to look at. It has a deck to carry bikers and pedestrians and another for cars
Its a bridge. Its made of metal. Its old, but will problably be around for another 100 years. It connects parks and people. It does a good job.
Traffic always sucks
The Steel Bridge is a through truss, double-deck vertical-lift bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States, opened in 1912. Its lower deck carries railroad and bicycle/pedestrian traffic, while the upper deck carries road traffic (on the Pacific Highway West No. 1W, former Oregon Route 99W), and light rail (MAX), making the bridge one of the most multimodal in the world. It is the only double-deck bridge with independent lifts in the world[1] and the second oldest vertical-lift bridge in North America, after the nearby Hawthorne Bridge. The bridge links the Rose Quarter and Lloyd District in the east to Old Town Chinatown neighborhood in the west.
It’s a bridge... it did not fall apart so, yeah, good bridge.
Nice place to take dog swimming and walk
Best bridge on the planet.
AMAZING
I just like the looks of this funky, very old bridge. Be aware of the convoluted path to get from a street bike path down to the east esplanade. You can just ask a passerby or a transit employee for directions. From either the east or west esplanade, steel decking leads to the LOWER level of the bridge that also carries real train tracks. Just as a side note/suggestion, if you have never seen the Steel Bridge raised, you will find the Rose Festival the best time to see that as the Fleet comes to Portland and docks along the waterfront at that time in June
Aptly named! Its a bridge... Made of Steel... Weird.
My walk was so nice, the view was (well what can I say) beautiful
Nice bridge to see if youre into that sort of thing.
Cool old bridge.
Amazing views at sunset time.
Its right next to the Moda Center.
Whats not to love? Why are you asking me to rate a bridge?
I think its now made of rust and tax dollars. Also trains occasionally burst into flames on it.
An absolute all star, its never once failed to do its job.
Least likely bridge to kill you if you jump.
Amazingly ok cool.
The coolest looking bridge in Portland thats a must to check out, a marvel of 100+ year old engineering with its retractable doubled decker design which you can see in action whenever a large enough boat passes under. If you plan on walking or biking across the bridge then make sure to stick to the lower platform as the upper sidewalk is ridiculously narrow, forcing you to stand to the side and wait for the occasional biker to pass safely.
One of the favorite Bridge. This Bridge might need to be replace cause there will be an earthquake at some point no matter of time. This Bridge has 2 decks and both of them lift the Bridge when huge ship comes. Cars, Pedestrians, Bikes, Buses, and Max Trains go above the Bridge. And Below the Bridge is Pedestrians, Bikes, Amtrak and Private Train go underneath the Bridge.
My daily commute. Beautiful sunset and easy to access via bike.
Walking across a bridge is always a nice experience. Each one is unique. This particular bridge did not disappoint. From the massive girders to the low/underside placement of the pedestrian walkway, this bridge creates a wonderful experience.
Love it.
Its a bridge, what else is there to say?
Historic bridge. Very cool.
Its a bridge that didnt fall down when I was on it. Seemed sturdy. Good times.
My favorite bridge with the quickest travel time from east to west and vice versa.
Love the lower level bike path! Great for tourists!
Has safely allowed me to cross a big dang river on multiple occasions.
Old Bridge a nice view
Its a bridge. Its made of steel. What more to say?
Hecc hecc me saw the le grumpy old troll living under teh bridge. Hey said oi mate I like you face solve a puzzle now. Mr wissssssskers said hecc that easy he did the puzzle we went pass the bridge but dang good service though.
Great bridge. Very metal
This bridge crosses over the Willamette river. It has a cool view and has a pedestrian walkway on it that rides alongside the MAX train line. This is the go-to bridge for riding the waterfront via bike.
By far my favorite bridge. Very easy and pleasant access to pedestrians.Fun fact:Its a one -of -a -kind telescoping vertical lift bridge throughout the country.
Such a great walk.
Beauty at its best.
An aesthetically pleasing structure that serves a wonderful purpose of connecting the East Bank Esplanade and the waterfront. A smooth ride for cyclists and an enjoyable stroll for pedestrians
What can I say? Its a steel bridge. Over water.
Ummmm, its a bridge... nice pavement I guess.
Bridge tender straight up yelling at people over a loudspeaker because they kept trying to cross when a bridge lift was about to happen..was awesome
