Ive been here before the dam was removed (lake was there) and after the dam was removed. From a beauty point of view, it was much nicer with the dam in place and the lake there. Took several hikes up along the lake. I understand the removal of the dam, but now, as others have noted, the river floods constantly and washes out the road and access to the area. There is now no campground in the area (washed away). Can still hike in the area, just no road as the river is subject to constant spring damaging floods.
A beautiful location with a compelling story. You need to hike to this location now over the road that is closed to cars, but it is gentle slopes on an easy road. The plan is to remove the dam so nature can restore the environment including salmon (note historical pictures). But also note the dam removal destroyed the road to the dam site and trailheads so only hikers can see the beauty. I was fascinated by this trip, spend a couple of hours to do it yourself. The bypass trail is no longer required (as there are temporary bridges) but is well worth it if you can handle the extra elevation changes.
Amazing transformation with great displays. Work the hike to view a little bit of history.
Maybe halfway to hot springs... Liked the educational displays.
Pretty cool, road is washed out. 4 mile hike each way. You can bring bikes but you need to push the bikes through a detour for 1 mile.
Great stop for a fresh sandwich and chili.
Well worth the hike or bike! Great views of the canyon and parts of the old dam. The road is currently washed out due to a prior storm that prevents you from driving up to the overlook.
A truly awesome place. Really nice to see nature reclaiming the area. The drop down into the canyon below is quite awe inspiring.
Great place to observe nature taking over after a dam is removed
Beautiful view, really nice signage and info about the old dam. Very nice area in general, one of my favorite places to ride my motorcycle.
A great monument to past errors. Great to see them righted. Nice hiking in the former lakebed.
The largest dam removal in North America! This is fantastic. Its a must-see for anyone who loves salmon and hates civilization.
Amazing to see a restored habitat. Though the dam has been blown up, the remnants are a scar on the landscape.
The view is lovely and the park services does a wonderful job keeping the site accessible.
The location of the old spillway from the now-removed Glines Canyon Dam. When it was a spillway and during removal it was very interesting to visit, however now it is just a gorge with water flowing at the bottom.
Great view of the biggest dam removal in history (as of 2016)
I had the place all to myself on a quiet winter day.
Gorgeous view of the landscape
Intermediate difficulty. Looking at the gorge the river flows through is amazing.
Elwha restoration project, informative and add scenic.
Great education experience
Simply awesome to see this river opened up.
Beautiful view, unfortunately due to the road wash out it is a bit of a hike to get to right now.
Long hike but worth it.
