This was my 1st time to actually enter The Christ church burial ground. Even though I have been to Philadelphia multiple times. It was quite an amazing experience even though they charge $5 to enter at least you get a map of all the notable graves. My purpose to visit was very unique and special to me. I want to pay homage to one of the quiet and unsung heroes of the founding of our country - Tench Coxe Is buried in this cemetery not even a stones throw from Benjamin Franklin. Most people do not know who he is or what he did. And to many especially of his day they called him a coward and a Tory . But his role in solidifying the bill of rights and in particular the 2nd amendment Can not be understated...
Campos Philly Cheesesteaks loves Christs Church
When we were visiting Philadelphia we wanted to find the grave of Benjamin Franklin. Near Independence Hall is Christ Church Graveyard. Franklin is buried near the fence, you can see the grave without entering the graveyard. If you want to enter there is a nominal charge, something like 3 bucks per person. Inside there are 4 or 5 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Either way probably not worth the entry fee.
Christ Church Burial Ground is a historic cemetery located within the larger tourist area of Philadelphia. It is the final resting place of many prominent early Americans, the most noteworthy of whom is Benjamin Franklin. Due to acid rain, most of the headstones have had much of their engravings effaced. Admission is by fee only: children under 5 are free, 5 to 12, $1.00 Adults are $3.00. Guided tours for adults are $8.00 per person, $3.00 per child. I was very glad I did the tour. Our guide, Bob, was both fun and professional. His tour was really the highlight of our visit to Philadelphia.
Lots of good people buried there
This is a very cool piece of history in Philadelphia and for just $3 it should be on a must-see list for tourists wanting to check out the birthplace of American independence. Ben Franklin is definitely the big draw here. Don’t forget to bring a penny to toss on his grave! There are four other signers of the constitution here as well, however, including Benjamin Rush, the father of American Psychiatry. Bring a quarter for him! The staff here are also very friendly. When I informed them I was descendant of Benjamin Rush they accompanied me to his grave and told me facts about him that I did not know. It was a very nice visit.
$3 to get in, worth the cost. Lots of historical figures laid to rest here, including Benjamin Franklin, and 4 other signers of the Declaration of Independence. Would definitely recommend checking this place out if youre from out of town, like myself!
This is a cool place to see history. 5 signers of the declaration of independence including Ben Franklin. But they also have old head stones that date back to 1721. You can walk on the grass. You can look but dont touch these old stones. It is only 3 dollars to enter and 8 if you want a tour.
If you care anything about American history, or if old graveyards are just your thing, you arent missing this when you visit Philly. Small donation of $3 to enter. Beautiful well-kept graveyard where youll find the gravesites of Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Rush, and three other signers of the Declaration of Independence. Come pay your respects!
Excellent remembrance of some great people including Benjamin Franklin.
This cemetery was quite an interesting experience. It was fascinating seeing the graves of people from a couple hundred years ago, during the Revolutionary Era of the United States. Of course the most interesting was that of Benjamin Franklin, but many of the other tombstone inscriptions were also interesting to read. I was also surprised to see a couple of relatively recent grave markers. For the $3 admission price, it was definitely worth it to experience this part of history.
Calm, serene, and shady. Nice retreat from the hustle and bustle.
A great little escape from the city, small admission fee ($3 non guided tour) totally worth paying to preserve and keep the place looking the way it is.Pictures dont do it justice, if youre walking around the area and need a hour to kill I recommend it
Stopped in here to visit this historic cemetery and visit Ben Franklins grave. Very interesting experience.
Was supposed to be open until 4pm but was closed by 3:30pm. Charges admission. With that said, Ben Franklin is most famous grave and can be seen from the sidewalk so don’t have to enter/pay to see that.
Completely enjoyed the history buried here! Worth visiting and taking the guided tour to learn about who is buried where
Interesting historical site. 5 signers of the Declaration, including Ben Franklin, and Charles Mason (Mason-Dixon Line)
Worth the trip. Make sure you take a penny to lay on his grave in honor of his famous words penny saved is a penny earned.
Historically significant and a nice place to wander and learn.
Burial sight of many important early pioneers of our nation. Very special place where you can come and explore the many tombstones of early Americans that made a difference in our countrys early beginning.
Great place for history lovers.
Very interesting. Ben Franklin’s grave and also Benjamin Rush, too.
Really neat! You can pay $3 to walk around inside or see his grave from the fence.
So many historical figures here. We were only there about 30 minutes, very worth the quick stop.
Beautiful, tranquil, a gem in the city. Its a must see.
Cemetery . Very special as many signers of the declaration are buried here I believe. Help maintenance of the area by paying for maps. Benjamin Franklin buried here.
This place was amazing. Friendly guy at the entrance. Very good information.
Visit Ben Franklins grave, plus signers of the Declaration and Revolutionary War heroes.
Our tour guide, Anna, was very kind and knowledgeable. Well worth the price for the tour.
Worth the minimal fee to walk around, very humbling standing in front of the resting place of Benjamin Franklin. Well kept grounds.
Awe inspiring. To think of the history of the people buried there - and how what they did led to my life Im America today...selah.
Where Ben Franklin was buried! You can see it from the sidewalk but it costs money to go inside. But people leave pennies, why not Benjamins?
This was a great experience. The tour guide had abundant knowledge of the history of the Church and the cemetery. Very personable and loved for you to ask questions. We really enjoyed learning about the folks interred there. Although the grave stones have weathered to the point of losing their information, the Church archives have a directory of the location of everyone buried there. We thought it would be great to have a book with pictures and stories of those folks. I think theyre working on this.
It would be 5 stars without the $3 entrance fee
This was a great way to take in some of the more esoteric stories of the founders.
I enjoyed looking at the unusual and old stones.
Everything that Ben Franklin did for this great country should never be forgotten!
I hate that it closed at 4, but the Iron Window through the bricks still allowed my family to see the grave and have a memorable moment.
This is one of the places we visited when we visited Philadelphia. I like historical places and I enjoy visiting cemeteries too. The day we visited, they had someone who didnt come to work, so we were unable to get a guided tour. We had to do a self guided tour but it was a nice place to visit.
Ben Franklins resting place and that of many other historical figures.
Fascinating piece of history. Well staffed, played out well. Would recommend to friends
Some seriously old graves here, like pre-declaration of Independence old. Pretty cool.
The guide was very nice and knowledgeable and its a great place to learn about history and it includes Ben Franklins grave.
First time and probably last time Ill ever have to pay to visit a cemetery lol, all for a great cause :) .Its beautiful, reminds me of the cemeteries in Salem Ma. Be sure to bring your camera for some excellent shots.
We took the guided tour of this historic burial ground and our guide Bob was fun and enlightening. Thanks for your efforts!
The best thing about cemeteries is reading the interesting grave stones and Christ Church Burial Ground has interesting ones. The most interesting grave of course is Ben Franklin’s. It’s right next to the gate so you technically don’t have to go into the grounds to see it. It does cost $2 or so to get in and they even have a small gift shop. The graves are super old.
Get as close as is possible with the earthly remains of Ben Franklin and a few singers of the Declaration of Independence . No need for the guided tour. Just a dollar for the kids and three dollars for the adults. Buy a one dollar map and you can tour the graves of note. A good 20 minute diversion as most of the gravestone’s etchings have long since eroded away - a further reminder that nothing is permanent.
I truly enjoy cemeteries. The history here is incredible.
Many founding fathers are interned here. Beautiful place, must see.
Excellent guide very knowledgeable and could answer any question
Interesting to see good ole Ben Franklin and his wifes final resting place. The pennies on his grave are a neat sight. Nice to see preservation like this in our fair city of Philadelphia!
Our guide was very knowledgeable about each of the graves. Despite the heat he was very informative about all that he talked about. He also answered all questions asked of him and kept on till we were satisfied with the answer.
Amazing to see Benjamin Franklin restimg place and others buried there too. Very peaceful there.
Amazing place .including Ben Franklins burial site
...dont forget about this burial place while you are in Philadelphia many American revolutionary heros are resting here including Benjamin Franklin!!!
Did not go inside as you can see Ben Franklins grace from the street, but it was still worth a visit and if I had had the time, would have been worth the small admissions fee to see the rest of the cemetery.
This is a nice place. Tour guide told us everything about this place. This is a beautiful place and I will visit here again.
Limited tours available.
Overly crowded and closed on rainy days. I went by on a datthat it was only drizzling and it was closed. However, you can see a lot of the cemetery from the street.
If youre going in expecting to see great mausoleums or memorials you will be severely disappointed. Even Ben Franklins tomb is underehelming for such an important figure in US History. Id say 80% of the tombstones are unreadable and the other 20% are getting there. The price of admission doesnt include any kind of guide either.
This is a very interesting place to go and think about the history of Philadelphia. You can enter the burial grounds for $3 or go with a guide for $8 (per person) and it is well worth it. For example we learned that many of the stones have sunk down a few feet. Its not a place Id recommend taking little kids, because the stones and crypts are very fragile.
I was expecting Franklins grave to stand out. Although a very nice place to visit and see Americas history.
A very interesting piece of history located in the Old City section of Philadelphia. A small donation ($3) is requested upon entry and it is unquestionably worth it.
A great place to see the tasting place of the of the signees of the declaration of independence.
A must visit and 100% worth the $3 entry fee. So many notable people in this burying ground.
Definitely visit this site to see the tomb shared by Benjamin Franklin and his wife Deborah. I must say though that the experience was underwhelming mainly because the tomb does not stand out, calling into question what the people behind the 2017 restoration of the tomb were thinking when they planned the effort. I was told that maybe they wanted something modest but IMO, the plainness of the tomb does not really honor the Founding Father and his legacy. By contrast, the gravesite of Mr. Franklins parents at the Granary Burying Ground in Boston is quite notable. As are the gravesites of two US Presidents at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. And those sites do not charge an admission fee the way they do here. Yes, the fee is minimal but with the prestige that this site brings, I wonder why they cannot raise the funds required for maintenance and upkeep.
Fascinating location. There are so many influential people from history buried here.
Paid my respects to Benjamin Franklin!
Small graveyard, but with some very famous people
Ok so I have a thing for wandering around in old cemeteries. I am drawn by history and a cemetery is the best place to find history. In just one glance you can learn so much about people you never knew existed. In this cemetery you also get to learn about people you do know existed. People who helped shape the world we live in today also. They offer a map and they sell a small book. Get the book its cheap, but packed full of information on the cemetery and some of its residents.
Not much here other than the grave of Ben Franklin and his wife. It costs a bit to get into the cemetary, but you can view the grave site from outside if you want. This is fine to see as part of your overall experience at historic Philadelphia.
You can see Ben Franklins burial site through the gap in the north wall so if that is all youre going for not much point sending money on the admission fee. Treed and shady during a hot day.
I love old cemeteries. Resting place of Benjamin Franklin is what drew my attention. It is beautiful and well preserved. Admission is $2.
Good historical place to visit
Beautiful and well kept!
Nice grounds. I posted some photos to the Christ Church site of the adjoining burial grounds..
Great place to wander and try to read aome of the old markers on a nice spring or fall day. Benjamin Franklins grave is a must-see for every serious tourist!
Great place to rest in the shade, then ponder how things were in Colonial times.
One of my ancestors are actually buried there. His last name is Side. It’s a crazy story, he was one of my great, great, great grandfathers. His family had a lot of money back then but he was outcasted because he didn’t marry the woman his parents arranged for him. He married my grandmother (thank god cause I wouldn’t be typing this ) and settled down in the lower Kensington area of Philadelphia. My family and I still live 5 mins away in Fishtown.
Lot of history here obviously. Walked through the entire grounds and found all of the historical figures here.
Take this one slow. Read each tombstone, not just Benjamin Franklins. Think about what these people meant to our country.
All I can say is WOW !!! Very impressive site. The nicest place we visited in Philly.
A Revolutionary War burial ground, it is extremely well kept and provides the visitor with a unique historical look into our past.
History, History, History.....so many founding fathers and mothers of our great country, humbling and sacred experience.
Great experience.
Amazing historical cemetery
Able to see Ben Franklins grave from the street but there are tours available for the cemetery
Well kept grounds, peaceful and clean. Not spooky. In the daytime at least.
Amazing to see how people were buried so long ago and to see how some stones could stand up all the centuries
The historical content is incredible. highly recommended
Holes are poked in the stones so they can breathe.
Cool little historic graveyard where Franklin and other famous people are buried. Old gravestones. Very small donation to enter, but worth walking through.
All it really is, is an old cemetery with Benjamin Franklins grave site and a few other Declaration signers. When we went his grave was shut off from the public. But it was very cheap and the people were friendly.
Well kept little cemetery. I could find a little peace in here.
I wish this place was opened year-round!
Fascinating and peaceful burial ground, filled with historical figures and ordinary people.
Very historical. Many famous Americans are buried here.
Grave of Ben Franklin
Surreal. Cool to see.
