Its an amazing nature preserve. Undulating area made of hillocks, with few trees around. It is a great birding spot especially for hawks, harriers, etc. February to April is considered the best time to see flowers everywhere.
This is a nice place to take a strole with someone whose company you enjoy.I will warn you, most of the people on the narrow trails seemed to be unaware of the need for masks.(note to future readers; this was written in the time of COVID-19)
Very interesting place. Would probably be very pretty in Spring and early Summer with wild flowers blooming. Nice place for a hike.
This was an at the moment side trip. My partner and I were good we stopped by. Its a fascinating location with a geological mystery. Very easy to walk; be sure to bring a hat and a Discovery Pass. There is a gun range nearby, which is a little distracting. However, the beauty of the mounds and the meadow overcome this nuisance. If youre in the area, this is a quick day hike great for kids of all ages!
Paved trails, an observation mound picnic mounds with tables, very lovely! Up close viewing of giant mima mounds! Family and wheelchair friendly! I will be going again!!
A wonder and mystery of nature. What a lovely stroll among the Mounds. So much to see that you never would have thought was there. Worth the visit.
Unusual and fascinating spot featuring mystery mounds and a prairie grassland in the normally wet and forested PNW. Nice spot for nature walks and bird watching. Sounds from a nearby gun club can detract from its charm.
Pictures dont do justice to the amazing sight of the prairie mounds. ADA accessible trails as well as more challenging (but still moderate) walking zones. Sadly, no dogs allowed for the protection of the site.
The trail is really easy, and the view is beautiful. The landscape is unique, and the information boards are very informative. There arent usually many people here, so if your looking for a nice quick retreat for a contemplative walk its a good place to go.
I love this place. I live pretty close to the Mima Mounds and when I want to get away from everything this is where I head. Just walk and listen to nature. Its beautiful.
Nice walking paths, lots of insect activity.Close to a gun range so, unfortunately, it was not peaceful. Still pretty cool!
Nice little spot. Not too far off the freeway with a small interpretive center and trails throughout the mima field. Need a Discovery Pass.
Kinda cool natural formation of, for lack of a better term, mounds. No one knows how they formed or what caused them, but theories are proposed in the interpretive center. Nice view from first platform. The sound of rifle fire is annoying and intrusive from the very near sportsmans center. But, you know, 2nd amendment blah blah blah. Nothing to eat close so stop on the way. Farm boy is good, if disorganized.
Gorgeous and well worth a stroll! Such a fascinating and beautiful place for walk around the preserved remains of our glacial past.
Trails to walk and contemplate what created the mounds.
Visited the Mima Mounds yesterday. Easy to find, sufficient parking and theres a spot that offers 15 minute parking for those without a Discover Pass. The mounds are interesting (How did they get there?), but its not mind blowing. Its an okay little stop, with accessible paved trails. Nothing spectacular.
Boring place really. The public bathrooms were really well kept .
I expected very little but with my 3.5 year old this hike/ walk is PERFECT. We brought his balance bike, and it is flat enough that I dont have to worry, but still has lots of small dips here and there for him to go downhill and practice risk taking. I kind of like that there are no trees because I can see everything, whos coming down the trail, animals, etc. It feels very safe for this mom of 2 hiking without Dad around.
One thing I didnt like was that u cannot bring ur dog. Most people I Kno that hike trails have dogs.
Its a nice place to take a walk and relax. The mounds are pretty interesting to see, but its not one of the places I go out of my way to visit.
Great 1.9 mile trail
Pretty good place to go walk!!
Always a beautiful place to stop and visit, unfortunately everyday be prepared for the very loud gunfire from the shoosting range nearby.
Great place to visit with kids! Easy to get around with a nice paved pathway.
Really fun place to visit. The mounds are very interesting and there are about 4-5 miles of hiking trails starting at the parking lot. No dogs allowed, discovery park pass required.
We loved the hike and coming up with stories about how the mounds were created!
Fun place to take a nature walk! I cant believe I didnt know this place existed until now. Really cool scenery! Fun place to take kids, or dogs. Not a lot of people frequent this place either .
Ive come here on several other occasions and I find the outings to be informative in the geological sense. Its a curiosity as to how they were formed and the informational stations erected really do a fantastic job of trying to explain the unusual phenomena. Its an easy level trail and I believe a portion of it is ADA accessible. While the hike can be pleasant at times when the nearby shooting range has paused with the firing, I suppose if it bothered me more Id take along some cushy ear plugs, I just happen to be a little more interested in the outing and I put the pop-pop-pop out of my mind. Have fun!
Spent a few hours on the hill a few miles through the park, picked mushrooms, (get licenses). Socialized with hunters. Nice sunrise today.
I find it amazing how the mounds were formed. There not man made, nature decided to give us a unique puzzle. Its kinda breath taking to some when they first see how many mounds there are with no explanation of how they were formed. Some say that Big Foot buries their dead there and how the mounds appeared, when you see them it will raise many questions in your mind leaving more curious than ever on how and why they are. Great place to see,one of natures little secrets that everyone wants the answers to. Youll be glad you went and seen the Mima Mounds,
Can you figure it out? How did these get here?
This is an amazing place to visit and ponder how the mounds came to be or a nice place to take a walk.
Fun place to see these mounds that just developed and nobody knows why. Great for kids to get out and run. Walk the 1/2 mile loop for fun. Great drive in and out of there also.
Interesting and a fun trail to run. Only problem - no dogs allowed.
Quiet, peaceful, fun, good walking
TMima mounds a magical prairie, with a mystery to contemplate. Peppered with white oak trees, beautiful grasslands and countless large mysterious mounds...its a must see, very interesting.
Great place to visit. Has a weird aura about it. Makes you wonder want the mounds truly are.
Beautiful any time of year. Natural habitat so you have to visit several different times of the year to fully appreciate but worth the trip and user friendly trails easy walk paved trails clearly marked wheel chair friendly.
Nice place to visit.
So unique and interesting!
Cool to look at, dont expect to spend a ton of time here, not all that much to see.
Interesting land formations! Nice paved trail that goes around. Permanent portapotty type restrooms. Dont forget you need a Discover pass to visit the area.
Interesting flora and fauna in and around these rather in a Savannah like environment.
This mysterious feature of our region is always an interesting, if a little subdued adventure for us. The diversity in the prairie life that exists in this environment presents itself in an unique cross-section which permits us a view into the workings of nature.I am appreciative of the whole experience, from the placement of picnic tables, seemingly hidden like Easter eggs, atop some of the mounds, to the observation platforms stations which offer impressive panoramic views of the landscape. I am also appreciative of the efforts to maintain such a feature, which I estimate to be no small challenge given the available funding with which to do so.Ive rated this with 4 stars in light of the clear need to improve access to the park. The paved pathways which allow those with mobility impairments to experience the park are degrading, even as it is evident that they are dutifully maintained. Additionally, the entire experience is, as far as Ive seen, self-guided. The signage is very explicit, but a guided tour can help to make the experience more dynamic, especially for those whose attention for sustained reading is difficult to maintain, or for others who may seek a deeper understanding of the environment.
Beautiful ️
Eerie and beautiful, go on a cloudy day. There is no shade.
There is information and history about the mounds posted at location. Truly fascinating
Fun place to go for a hike or short run
Very neat place to visit. Interesting soil mounds, which have puzzled people for decades. Even with top scientists and modern technologies, they have yet to determine how they were formed. Nice information posters near the parking. Grab your discover pass and go visit. As always, please stay on the trails, as this prairie is under restoration.
My husband and so didn’t want to pay the discovery pass fee. We decided just to take a drive through the park and i saw that is was very well kept. A great place to take a day trip with. scenic drive and check out some beautiful landscape.
Interesting sight to see. Small kiosk with a few info panels to read, nothing too in depth. Good for a quick stop.
A nice place for a walk, would get a better rating if it didn’t sound like WWII every time I’ve been there due to the firing range next door.
Super interesting place. Great for pictures, viewing and hiking around.
The mounds are interesting to look at if you enjoy seeing the odd creations that nature comes up with. While not awe inspiring you leave scratching your head wondering. After visiting this place I noticed they are everywhere around here.
I drove by it to go to the gunclub
Great place to go for a nice walk.
Interesting place, mounds arestrange and unique, especial when the camas bloom all around them
Very cool little Park. It has the mysterious natural phenomenon, the mima mounds. There are acres of them. As far as you can see. Picnic tables are available but no camping. Its fun to look across the prairie at the strange landscape and wonder how they got there. They are not only found here in Washington, but they are quite rare.
Perfect spot for after hike piknik only a few tables set amongst the wooded mounds, but very quite.
A wonderful place to admire geology, unique wildlife, and tundra species! Restrooms available, as are picnic spots and parking.
Peaceful prairie, Mysterious mounds.
Get the pass before you go!
A really interesting geological find. Easy to get to and easy, easy to walk. Flowers and wildlife are great. This would be a wonderful spot for an afternoon out with the family. Recommend bringing sunscreen if it is a sunny day.
Nice walking paths and information about the mounds. Parking lot had the cleanest outhouse that Ive seen in a while.
Wonderful place to take a short hike, and learn some natural history about the local area. Definitely worth the trip. Family friendly, picnic areas, interpretive trails.
These mounds exist beyond the park boundaries but this is the best place to see them displayed. A unique phenomenon in which it is interesting to walk around. Gunfire is often heard from the shooting range on the other side, but dont worry as they are shooting in the opposite direction. Perhaps to scare the bigfoot away?
Great walking trails. Open areas, bigger than I expected.
Super interesting, and a short under an hour stop
Interesting and beautiful. The sound of gun shots is disturbing.
Beautiful and scenic
Very clean, no litter on or beside the trail. Next time we will come earlier in the year to see the wild flowers in bloom. There were the sounds o f freedom coming from the nearby gun range, but they didnt bother us at all.
Interesting geological feature found in Thurston County Washington. Pack a lunch and wonder thru the Mima Mounds and enjoy the wild life.
Very interesting! Fun place to visit. Something for everyone.
Very interesting place. A lot of interesting birds and bugs to be heard/seen. Great for young kids. Unfortunately, hearing all the gun shots from the shooting range interrupts the otherwise peaceful environment.
A nice place to do a day walk and enjoy the weather. Not much scene diversity for people looking to take photos.
Very relaxing. Beautiful views
I loved the historical facts and writing they had. They also had a little observation look out. Wish it was taller but it still was awesome. A nice little walk around in the mounds.
The major flaw is the gun club situated directly adjacent to the mounds. We were surrounded by the sounds of gunfire the entire time. Very difficult to enjoy the scenery or the atmosphere. No sign of wildlife obviously. Otherwise a beautiful place.
I love the trails here they are a great walk
Love it here
Easy walk through nature.
One very amazing place. As for how they were formed Im undecided as to which explanation is most plausible to me but I find it quite humorous that there is serious consideration that gophers may be to blame for the mounds. Go figure. It could be true. One outstanding experience, though. Glad I was able to go.
I think its fascinating. The wildflowers bloom in May And are beautiful. Its worth seeing
