If visiting during the Summer Months, I HIGHLY suggest bringing/applying some form of Mosquito Repellant as well as long sleeves and a Mosquito Net for your head.; Im VERY serious about this. This year, mosquitoes were very active and there were plenty of them, if you desire to walk along any of the trails within this area, you need to protect yourself and loved ones from the mosquitoes... In the meantime, Enjoy.
Great place to hike and get away from the city while still being in the city! They have little ponds with huge koi fish! Its also across the street from the park that has lots of amenities!
Very pretty park with clean trails. We went on a rainy day and still enjoyed it. We were hoping to see some Koi fish but didnt get to see any today.
Treasure in the valley. Easier access and less crowds then more popular Huntington Gardens. $9 to enter. Charles Wood Japanese Garden alone is worth the admission. Laid back. Relax. Several lawns for snoozing and benches for resting weary legs.
Lovely wilderness space with azaleas, a wooden walkway hidden at the back, three small ponds w/pitcher plants(?), one pond w/two geese. Natural, not manicured, but a tiny bit of attention lately with new wood on a few benches, new wood on the fence at the perimeter, few new planks on bridge. No designated wheelchair parking or good, safe access, but a lower asphalt edge at the front end; flat inside/is navigable. Fair number of people here during early March, azaleas in nearly full bloom.
Beautiful, well kept, and serene. Be sure to bring bug spray though!
Amazing foliage and plant speices. Beautiful landscapes.
I dont think this place is in operation any more. I drove by to check it out and it just looked like a mostly overgrown field with 3-4 lily ponds and a hidden boardwalk behind it all. I dont know what it used to be but its hardly anything to look at now.
This was the most un-Japanese Japanese garden Ive been to. The only Japanese things here are koi and a bridge, otherwise it is ponds, lily pads and trails and thats it. No Japanese plants, hardly any rocks. Its a nice nature walk but not a Japanese garden.
Ive honestly been to better gardens/botanicals. Theres plenty of parking and the price is doable, but nothing spectacular here.
So pretty. Theres so many different plants that grow here and the koi fish are elegant. There was surprising a lot of turtles and it was a nice walk.
Great place to go for a nice stroll and decompress after a long day. Let your frustrations melt away as you take in the beautiful water lilies. Great place to take visiting family. Plenty of little alcoves and sitting places to bring a book or just take in the fresh air.
Love this place. Very beautiful. Take a bag of cat food and feed the koi fish, there giant and beautiful
Used to be kept up since the old fella I used to help when come up on him worki g. Passed so has the gardens
Absolutely beautiful place to relax and experience nature.
Its just an abandoned park, nothing to see here.
Beautiful...I didnt know this was here.
These gardens are beautiful year around.
Love walking with my family and dog here. Broke my heart when I saw a bunch of grown adults throwing large heavy rocks into the Koi fish pond, theyre probably going to be the reason why we cant have nice things.
Beautiful to look at. Its a little small but theres lilys, huge coy fish, turtles and beautiful scenery its very relaxing.
This was a beautiful garden. A bit to small to warrant the drive we made to check it out. But apparently its a very popular spot for prom pictures!
The best time of year to visit is when the azaleas are in bloom. Just plan to take a slow leisurely walk about, no pressure, no rush, calm, relax, take your time. There are some benches so you can sit. Im taking in the view. Smoke em if you got em. Yes that is a turtle, yes that is a very large fish, is it a koi? I dont know but looks like one. You are correct that is a raptor in the tree. You saw an alligator I didnt see him, he got away too fast, a baby one you say. Glad I came by, I needed to relax. You going to pass that thing? Dont be a Bogart.
Beautiful for a stroll. Will definitely be coming back in the spring.
Great place to walk your dog and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Loved walking around and looking
Nice, safe, quiet place to visit
The peaceful creeks, well groomed foliage, exotic plants and wild life give this garden a wonderful feeling. Its a nice place to calm down, have a walk, read a book, or spend the day with friends.
Its so peaceful and the scenery is so pretty. Beautiful place to take photos
Free, beautiful area, can not wait to see it at spring time
Its a very calm and natural place! The koi are beautiful and the view in the back is amazing!!
Very peaceful and beautiful. My daughter enjoyed looking at the fish.
The most peaceful place in a busy city.
Excellent nature walks! Great place for photography as well!
My favorite park in the city, very relaxing koi ponds. Very good place to take photos.
Very good place to find your ZEN, the only thing I hate about this place is people walk their dogs and leave their nasty droppings all over the place. Even my Chilids think its nasty too.
I love this place, ever since I discovered it last year in the blistering heat. It was beautiful big Lilly ponds, flowers all around a mini waterfall to wildflowers and turtles, and koi galore there is so much to see. I recently went again and took my camera now the snakes are out saw a 4ft long ratsnake and a couple black racers, It really is a great place to get away for a bit and just keep to yourself and think. I just wish it was more kept up. It desperately needs a cut and weeding and it has so much potential, and to think its right here in Mobile. Wish I could actually help out with it. Later in Spring more wild flowers will be blooming and I will keep coming back.
Beautiful flora, but I wish there werent so many man made additions.
Nice quite place to reflect needs some upkeep but pleasant overall a wooded forest in the middle of the city
Not much to do with Japanese gardening. We did run across a nice stream slightly off trail from the “garden.”
Absolutely beautiful place to visit! So much wildlife and the koi fish and turtles play together!! The wildflowers are everywhere!!
Looking great with the help of the spray team
It was so Beautiful and Peaceful. I so enjoyed it.
Really beautiful place me and my son really enjoy seeing the fishes and turtles
Oh my goodness! The beauty of this place is quite the sight to see!
I loved seeing the fish!
Peaceful & relaxing!! Great meditation scenery
A Beautiful Sanctuary...
One of my favorite places to go in Mobile! Very serene and beautiful with large beautiful fish in each pond. Beautiful place to take pictures.
We went in February, and from the looks of other photos, maybe its better at other times of the year, but when we went it was not very impressive. My kid really loved the huge koi fish, but other than that, not much to look at. It was still a nice place to walk around, however.
Lovely park. No matter why you go, support them with a donation to keep it free, clean and the plants and water cared for.
This park is named in honor of Mr. Charles Wood who dedicated himself with effort to transform former fish hatchery into this beautiful garden. Must visit in the spring time for the lush blooming flowers and enjoy the stroll through the garden. Bring some bread to feed the ducks, turtles and fishes.. The garden is free and closes at dust.
It was quiet peaceful lovely. and just let your mind body and soul be as one.
So beautiful! So surprising to find in the South. I understand they have a Japanese sister city but still a pleasant surprise.
I have been to Japanese Gardens all over the world ... and this aint one.
Thank you Mr. Charles Wood for your dedication and all the work you have put in to this beautiful project! The park is beautiful as it is now and your future vision is magnificent! I look forward to visiting again soon! With much appreciation, Daphne (great great granddaughter of Mary McNeil Fenollosa)
Went here on our way back to the airport for some time to kill, it could be a really nice place but there is little to no upkeep so its pretty run down, we lots of turtles and coy in two of the ponds but just not much of a pretty park.
Nice but a little snakey
This my spot yall ducked and tucked off from the busy city life
Wasnt as clean as expected and you couldnt even see the kois because it is grown up.
This garden was hidden, parking is scarce, and the plants appear less polished than most Japanese gardens, but the park is spacious and the ponds are beautiful and stocked with koi and turtles. The Japanese gardens in Fort Worth may have raised my expectations a bit, but this is a lovely spot for a picnic or family photo shoot.
Very nice clean, and especially when Azaleas are in bloom.
Very disappointed.
I went to visit and was very disappointed. It did not look much like a Japanese Garden from the road. The only thing that looked Japanese was the one bldg. there, which was closed despite it still being opening hours. Then there was a sign that said Beware of Alligator. Needless to say I was not going any deeper knowing there was an alligator crawling around. I did see two people walking around deeper into the garden thpugh. Very sad as I truly wanted to see this site.
Quaint little garden located just off the road. This Japanese garden has many different ponds with multicolored koi fish, bluegill, and turtles. This is a free garden, fishing is not allowed. This garden is a great place to take family photos with beautiful backdrops. Along the back there is a boardwalk and the park closes and dusk.
I lovethis place
Charming . A Very calming place to visit right in the middle of everthing!
This place is no longer safe to visit. I used to love walking around there with my children but now too many shady people go there to prey on people and rob them!
I hate it will be closing soon!
Not worth going!
Was pretty good got a few nice pics
Beautiful peaceful place to go to clear your mind about things..
Beautiful. Great place for pictures.
Quite place to think.
I love the large koi and the many turtles.
Beautiful place!
We were there for a wedding but stopped going on a regular occasion because someone put an alligator in there.
Peaceful place to go
Pretty scenery from a distance. Have not actually gone there. Only passed by it.
Dirty water people fishing signs of no fishing posted
The koi fish are huge and the nature walk is good.
A lovely place to get lost and explore
A beautiful area
Nice, quiet place for a walk and a picnic.
Wasnt what I expected, not to mention the ALLIGATOR warning signs
Little known place with good scenery.
Not Japanese enough! They should just call it a “trail” or “forest”
Beautiful Place.
Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful
Great place for relaxing, walking and picnics.
