One of the best cemeteries I’ve ever visited. First of all, this place is huge. There’s a lot to see here. Also, the whole place is so well maintained. It’s such a beautiful spot and I would recommend this cemetery to anyone who likes old gravestones, historic cemeteries, or just a nice spot to watch the sunrise.
Cave Hill Cemetery is about as beautiful and serene as a cemetery can be. While our sons were in town for Fathers Day weekend we decided to visit Cave Hill (were those people who love to visit cemeteries) to visit some of the luminaries that are resting there, and to take in the beauty of such a storied cemetery.Driving in the main entrance you first travel down a long, tree-lined street. For those that have never visited before (like us) there is a kiosk with some informative pamphlets and a map. We knew who we wanted to visit, so the map helped us find our way.Cave Hill is a sprawling cemetery with criss-crossing roads and amazing scenery. The roads wind up hills and down valleys, all while paying silent respect and dignity to departed who rest here. Our first destination was to Muhammad Ali, his a very dignified, stately memorial. And surprisingly understated. Freshly planted flowers accompany the walkway up to his resting place. Our second destination was, of course, Colonel Harlan Sanders, and his grave site was pretty much as I expected. A bit of grandeur and nicely maintained. The Cemetery makes it easy to find these two locations simply by following the green (Ali) or yellow (Sanders) lines on the pavement. Otherwise just driving or walking around this cemetery is a beautiful experience. The varieties of the grave markers is amazing, ranging from a simple granite slab on the ground to grandiose sculptures and intricate headstones, all which reflect and pay respect to those resting there. My wife and I plan to return again, given more time, to take in the quiet beauty of this magnificent resting place
Really well maintained cemetery with lots of history. You can pick up a free map on the way in which shows you where the famous people are. Muhammad Ali and Colonel Sanders both have paths that lead you their resting place. It’s easy to get lost, so make sure to follow the main road and look for the colored paths on the road (Muhammad Ali’s is green). All of the stones have been cleaned and kept in great shape. It’s free to visit so make sure to check it out!
Cave Hill Cemetery is a 296-acre Victorian era National Cemetery and arboretum located at 701 Baxter Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky. There is a main entrance on Baxter Avenue and a secondary entrance on Grinstead Drive (two other entrances have been closed). It opens daily at 8 a.m. and closes daily at 4:45 p.m. (when you are well advised to be off the property because it will be locked up). It is Louisvilles largest cemetery and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Cave Hill National Cemetery, containing military graves, is also on the National Register, added in 1998. American Revolutionary War military officer and founder of Louisville George Rogers Clark is buried here, along with sisters Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill who composed the Happy Birthday to You song, boxing champion Muhammad Ali who was born in Louisville, and Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Both union and confederate soldiers are buried there, which is not common. The cemetery is very large, is very well kept, and is full of interesting and beautiful grave markers, tombs, and monuments, making it a beautiful and peaceful place to spend an afternoon. The cemetery is currently listed as a level two arboretum accreditation but is in the process of becoming a level three and, once that is achieved, it would be one of only five cemeteries in the world to have that accreditation status. There is no entry fee.
Great place to visit! If able, I would reccomend walking and taking in the beauty and history. The guards can point you in the right direction to visit the Ali grave and Colonel Sanders site. We like taking Sunday walks and visiting different parts. Nice off the beaten path place with a lot of history.
This is a gorgeous and very well kept cemetery! I love the history of the place. The landscaping was beautiful and lawns manicured properly. Getting the guidebook to view the famous peoples graves was very neat to do! We loved seeing Colonel Sanders grave. My only complaint is that the hours you can visit the cemetery are not very good. I understand it is because of people coming in and vandalizing the cemetery, but if there was anyway to keep the cemetery open longer so you could visit in the evening that would be nice!
Great cemetery with many notable Americans, from sports, politics, frontiersmen, the lady who wrote the Happy Birthday song, great military soldiers and other famous Americans of all fields. Some of the memorials and tombstones are true works of art and it would take many days to see most of this historic and beautiful cemetery in Louisville.
Beautiful cemetery, very well taken care of and some very interesting history there.
Cave Hill is truly amazing! Do yourself a favor and see this. The monuments are second to none. They illustrate the rich history of Louisville’s most powerful families and lineages.
A wonderful, beautiful cemetery with lots of places to sit and relax/meditate. Very clean and prestige landscaping! Love it here!
We were very pleased with our experience at Cave Hill Cemetery. It is a spacious, beautiful, historic cemetery that provides a lot of different venues for burial of a loved one. They gave us a complete tour and provided all the information we needed that could help us decide on the perfect spot for my husband’s final resting place. They also gave us all the information ahead of time about their services to expect the day of his memorial service. Everything was right on time and stress free for our family. Everyone that attended was very impressed with the beauty of the locale we chose and the manner of of professional care and privacy we experienced.
Beautiful, well maintained grounds. If youre walking the grounds, be sure to wear comfy sneakers. Theres a lot of ground to cover.
It was our first time visiting any cemetery and, with a little amusement, it was great. Its a beautiful place with thousands of graves - some of them of famous personalities like Muhammad Ali. Quite an art involved when it comes to graves and you realize it when you visit this place.Very peaceful - for obvious reasons - and you get to see the messages and memories people leave behind when they are buried under the ground. It is quite interesting to read them. We went to see Muhammad Alis grave - great experience. There is parking inside the cemetery near the office but, if for few minutes, you can stop by anywhere and then carry on.
Great historic place. Muhammed Ali and COL Sanders are buried there. The cemetery is HUGE. Thought we would only be there for an hour or so but ended but there for 3 hours! Was great to look at all the old, different headstones, monuments, and moseliums. They even have an area for the Civil War Soldiers. Did a lot of walk being that we parked at the office but it was great exercise and the provided a clear map for us. I would go back again. It was well maintained and clean. The staff at the office was really friendly.
Beautiful and well maintained final resting place for veterans and family. I have been here three times for burial and internment. I also experienced a Memorial Day at this cemetery. The staff are very respectful and helpful. Absolutely beautiful ground as beautiful as one can expect a cemetery to be.
No maps easy to get lost big place not a lot of space to park I downloaded a map onlineThere website makes you create an account to download a mapGrounds crew does amazing job looks better than a golf courseCame here to see colonel SandersResting place not very busy
Beautiful place to spend an hour or two. We went on a gorgeous fall day and drove through the cemetery (it is quite big - I recommend stopping at the visitor building to get a map), but you could walk it as well. In addition to the famous people buried here (Harland Sanders and Muhammad Ali), there are so many beautiful mausoleums, tombstones, and gardens.
When I was a child, my eldest sister and her boyfriend would drop me off to feed the ducks, for hours at a time. One of Louisville s most famous cemeteries. Huge, and historic. Well worth a visit.
Love this cemetery every time I visit I see something new. They have maps of where famous people are buried. Rows of our soldiers both known and unknown. Its an awing sight to see all the soldiers that have sacrificed their lives for our country!
A beautiful and peacefull place. There is no company like the dead.
One of the most beautiful resting places iv ever been to ...a lot of big names in this cemetary, and one of the newest members is (The Champ) Muhammad Ali
Used to come here and feed the ducks as a kid. The most beautiful and serene place.
Traveling from Wisconsin on my motorcycle and I tried to visit here today. I was stopped immediately and told that motorcycles are not allowed. I’m a 64 year old grandma and I’ve never been so offended. Back home a lot of the veterans funerals are motorcycle escorted, I’ve never heard of anything so stupid.
Picnic lunch with the colonel in summer 2005. KFC on the menu of course.
We come up here often since ALL of my family are buried here. Ive been coming ever since i was a little child. This place is beyond beautiful and comforting knowing my family is here.. The grounds are well kept and those that work here are very sweet. We also stop by and feed the ducks and geese.. You will not be disappointed if you come and ride through, its just so peaceful!! Thank you Cave Hill cemetery!!!
The last resting place of Colonel Sanders, Muhammad Ali, and Patty Hill (the writer of Happy Birthday).
This is the most beautiful cemetery Ive ever visited. The historical significance is beyond words. I can walk there for hours and never tire. I wish I could go every day.
One of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever visited. Absolutely gorgeous and peaceful.
Beautiful scenery and landscape.
You have to check this place out. Absolutely stunning. There is so much to see here. One of the guys that works here even showed us around for a little bit. Super nice.
Its a beautiful place to visit (including some of my family). There are many points of interest here: famous people, interesting graves, people lost in the significance of history. Make sure to take a couple of bags of corn to feed the geese.
Cave Hill Cemetery is a very pleasant place, as cemeteries go. The grounds are very well manicured. Staff can provide you with a map indicating where notable individuals, or your loved ones, are buried.
Beautiful cemetery & well taken care of.
Great place to walk around and refresh your body and soul.
Amazingly beautiful
Beautiful, historic, and well taken care of cemetery in Louisville close to the Highlands. Its so large, Ive not been able to see all of it after several visits! Great for a quiet walk and/or to take photos. Several well known people are buried here and its kinda fun to search for them.
Beautiful! If you give this place less than five stars it can only be because the hours are somewhat limited
This was the beat part of our trip. The cemetery is very clean and beautiful.
Without sounding morbid, I spend a fair amount of time in cemeteries all over the world. I can say this is one of the most well kept I have ever had the privilege to view. Definitely worth the time for paying respect to fallen Civil War soldiers, admiring the memorial stones of all sizes, just walking in peace, or stoping buy to see a few people of importance. Simply beautiful
Lovely historic amazing trees
Very beautiful, clean, and well maintained place. Grab a map at the office or use Google map. You may visit Alis and Colonel Sanders tomb. Please be respectful!
Beautiful place to go with pleanty more than graves to look at.
Possibly the most beautiful place in Louisville. Visually stunning in both the peak of Summer and Winter. With just enough snow to fully cover the grass, the stark contrast of the bare trees and narrow curving paved roads look like living artwork.
Beautiful cemetery, you wont find a prettier one
Such an historic part of Louisville; not to be overlooked when visiting this city! Famous people such as Muhammed Ali and Col. Harland Sanders (KFC Founder) are buried here. The grounds are impeccable and so peaceful with an abundance of wildlife (one lone turkey plus many, many ducks and geese make this cemetery home). Absolutely breathtaking!
Very nice cemetery. Although there really isnt good parking options. We went here to see Colonial Sanders grave. Follow the yellow line.
My grandparents are buried here. Ive been coming here to visit their graveside, and feed the ducks since I was little. I would bring my children throughout the years and now I bring my grandson. It is a beautiful cemetery!
Beautiful, historic cemetery. One of my favorite places to go. I recommend bringing a small bag of bird seed to placate the geese if youre going sightseeing. ;)
This is one of the best places in the state to play the game Guess Whos Buried Here!
Extremely beautiful very interesting
Many of our family are buried in this Beautiful Cemetery. Our Father passed in 1963 when I was 12 yrs old and was buried here. There are many folks who were Public figures from the Louisville area.Love you Mom And Dad we have not forgotten you .Bob
Muhammad Ali is buried here. Ive been coming here to feed the geese at the pond near the main office for years. This place isnt only a cemetery but its also a great place to see historic grave sites, run or walk, relax and enjoy the array of tree and flower species, or explore different memorials to the dearly departed. Get a map from one of the guards when you get there, bc this place is huge.
Cave Hills Cemetery is amazing in both its natural beauty and historic nature.Entering past the Corinthian style clock tower and down the tree lined road transports you from the urban bustle outside to a surreal landscape of seemingly ancient trees and even more ancient graves---sitting like a time capsule in the midsts of the modern city.Free and open to the public for self tours, one could spend an entire day walking amongst the tombstones and mausoleums while taking in the beauty of the landscape or the history of those laid to rest here. From George Rogers Clark to, of course, the Colonel--- Harland Sanders...I recommend printing a map which points out some of the more historic significant burial spots.
I have not been to Cave Hill Cemetery, so I can not comment on the establishment in that regard. Im sure it is a nice place.I was calling in reference to a Job position there that had been posted on line. I sent an email enquiring about the position. I never received a reply to know if the position had been filled. So I decided to call and ask for the individual concerned with the position and a Female answered the phone. I asked for this person and told the Female what my call was in reference to. Though she was not rude, she did start laughing quite hard. I can never recall in my almost 50 years on this planet, of being laughed at when seeking employment. Very immature person that I had talked to. I was wanting to move back to my Home state and be close to my relatives. I am a College and Military Educated Disabled Combat Veteran who is still able to work for a living. Maybe someone can fill me in on the joke.
My brother in law was interred there last Friday. The cemetary staff were awesome. Such a professional team who were very respectable to my sister and her famiky. Thank you.
Love going here and seeing all the tombstones. Very pretty here .
Huge beautiful cemetery. Colonel Sanders, Ail, and Mia Zapata rest here, among many beautiful monuments to others who once called Louisville home.
Visited Feb of 2017. It was on a weekend so the main office was closed but the staff at the guard house was very friendly. He told me stories about the history and helped me find the sections I was looking for.
I was expecting a cement plant, sorry. Very nice place though!
Beautiful, especially in the fall.
Very old cemetery that houses some of Louisvilles most famous historical figures including Colonel Sanders and Muhammad Ali. The monuments are beautiful.
Beautiful historic place. Stop and say hello to the security guard at the entrance. He will provide you with a map, Dos and Donts, as well as some information on other neat places around the grounds. The Administration building still has the feel of a 1920s schoolhouse. Go to the potty before you come here. Youre going to spend a very long time reflecting on history, nature, and yourself
Clear skies, cool breeze how could I say no to exploring one of the most breathtaking cemeteries I have ever laid eyes on! So much history. I had to go on a photoshoot!
Colonel Sanders and Muhammad Ali are buried here, its really neat (and beautiful) cemetery to visit.
I came to visit the final resting place of Muhammad Ali..on my way out I noticed that Colonel Sanders was also buried here
