Wonderful collection of historical buildings in a small but lovely space. Excellent outing. Get the tour!
A must see!! Well-preserved period architecture from SC. Incredible to be able to compare a frontier SC period house with a house that was built a bit later when more resources were coming in. Mr. Mike was our guide and he is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.
Even though we couldnt go in all the buildings due to covid right now, we enjoyed our tour.
Great look back into our history and past. Well kept. Excellent tour options. Best time to go is the open house. Needs more funding so all buildings can be open all the time
This is such an amazing place! The people are great, very informative and friendly especially the gentleman that took us on the tour. The tour is definitely worth the $5 and roughly the hour and a half it took. Beautiful very historic place. I would definitely recommend it if youre in the area and have the time.
Just went to the museums Haunted History Halloween program. Nice alternative to the usual Halloween activities. Staff did a nice job of bringing history to life a bit. Looking forward to coming back during the day to see more of what is offered. Seems like there is alot more to explore than meets the eye.
Totally awesome! If you love history and a guide who can take you from the present and instantly to the past..expertly...then you are gonna love this!!! Dont miss it for anything!!!!
We went out for family day which was a free event they were holding today. It was nice but not suitable for little kids. More for children 5 and up. The staff were really friendly. Most of the houses werent open for people to look in. All in all not bad but I personally am not looking to go back right away.
Herb sale and bake goods.yum lavender sour cream pound cake
An amazing asset for our county full of historical information with so many accurate details about out past. Valuing our past is such a major part to move forward. Our museum is well worth a visit.
Very nice field trip. Informative, age appropriate and pleasant staff.
We really enjoyed this place. The walking tour was wonderful. We learned so much about lexington and South Carolina history I had never known about. I would reccomend this place to anyone
An amazing and educational display of how things used to be long before I was born.
Ive lived in Lexington most of my life (35+ years), and never visited until recently. What a hidden gem with massive tourist and educational potential! The kids enjoyed it and want to go back. With a few docents and guides in period dress, the museum could really become a draw.
Interested in history and the time period to hear how people lived in that time period. Here is a one room school house and what it may have looked like inside.
Great place to visit. We had a personal visitor guide. Very informative and very reasonable.
Cameron gave a excellent 2 hour guided tour that only an amazingly knowledgeable historian (such as he is) could give. Learned so much about the rich local history and loved it! The period correct artifacts are fascinating glimpses back 200yrs +. Will return soon!
This is an untold story in the region. 6 1/2 acres of land wonderful tour only $5 per person ....an hour and a half or two hours through the 35 structures and the stories that they tell. A wonderful contribution to the community of Lexington and surrounding areas. Largest collection of Midlands antique furniture in the country.
My daughter’s 1st grade class field trip was fun and very educational! All the kids thoroughly enjoyed their time there today.
An Unforgettable ExperienceThe tour guides lead us through the county’s history prior to 1860.
Our Girl Scout Troop went. The staff is very friendly, welcoming and happy to engage. Such an underrated local jewel!
Cameron gave one of my favorite tours in a museum I’ve ever listened to! Out of the several states I’ve lived in & learned about, this is the first time I felt I was actually in living history. It was such a joy to hear someone who was passionate about history & had great jokes to entertain us while teaching. I am absolutely going back & bringing all my family when they visit! Thanks for the educational & fun time!!!
Enjoyed the tour, knowledgable guides.Highly recommend.
Well worth the drive! Mike gave us a great tour and made sure that any questions we had were answered.
Great place for the family. Awesome programs. Super historians! Highly recommended!
Great Christmas program. Loved seeing how Christmas was celebrated in the 1700-1800s. Loved all the original houses and decorations.
What a great place to learn Lexington County history. What a great interpretive center. Mike Spears rocks it as your guide. Beautiful rustic buildings as well as refined. They also have a great and I mean great with a capital G quilt collection displayed through out. I hope they think about doing a special exhibit of their immense collection, even if its off-site of the museum. Id come back just to see that.
Very nice place ! Beautiful and historic... Great spot for pictures
Very awesome. Staff is so knowledgeable and friendly.
The woman that took us on the tour was very friendly and knowledgeable. The museum doesnt look impressive from the street but theres a lot of interesting history in those few buildings. Watch out for fire ants if youre wearing sandals.
2 hours worth of History on a walking tour of the grounds and only $5 per person if you want the guided tour if you dont want the guided tour its free to walk around. Love seeing the buildings inside and hearing stories from the past that bring history alive
Our tour guide Mike was very knowledgeable. Anyone who is into history should check the place out. Lots of stuff spanning back as far as the 1700s. Didnt really get to tour it all because of the timing. Plan on making a trip back to take in more of it.
This was a wonderful tour as we travel to connect with my ancestral roots.
I took a school group here on a field trip recently, and we had a great time! So many interesting historical buildings from right here in Lexington County. One of the homes was built in the 1700s by the Corley family, who had 17 children! No wonder Corley is a prominent name in Lexington! I learned a lot, and the kids enjoyed touring the Colonial homes, kitchens, dipping candles, and having a lesson in an old schoolhouse.
Just went to the spooky Halloween tour. The skits were funny for all ages. Had a great time.
Wonderful place to visit for the whole family
Cameron was informative and fun. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. We definitely recommend this wonderful museum.
Wonderful historic site in the middle of Lexington. Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable!
Nice Midlands bluegrass exibit
We had a great time on the haunted tour. We will be back to visit during the day to see more. We are looking forward to the Christmas season display they talked about.
I love out small town museum. I am a friend of the Lexington County Museum. The murders and mystery walking tour was educational.
What an amazing place. Our tour guide, Mike, was incredibly knowledgeable. The tour was amazing.
Very rich history here.. a must visit
Very informative tour!
Loved it! There was a generous slice of South Carolina history... from pre-Revolutionary War to after the Civil War.Our tour gide was both knowledgeable and interesting!
Amazing tour! Lots of interesting facts and buildings to explore
Always stop by when on vacation
On the surface it would appear that there is not much to say about some old wooden buildings. Our guide Ken brought them to life. His commentary was peppered with reports of experiments to validate farming and cooking techniques of the past.
Really interesting place to go. They have transported buildings from all over the state to rest here.
My parents and I took my cousins to this museum. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Huge surprise. A lot going on there
Excellent way to see the history of the area. Way more interesting than I expected.
Very nice place
Just love a place like this with interesting local history. Great tour and spent a great couple hours on the tour.
Total solar eclipse was great 2017
The staff is both knowledgeable and friendly and the museum is well kept and interesting! Definitely worth a visit when you are in the Lexington area!
Very friendly and knowledgeable guide. My kids (11yo & 7yo) enjoyed it as much as I did. We cant wait to go back and see the rest of the structures.
I didnt even know ow this was here but we definitely enjoyed walking around and will definitely come back!
Professional, polite and friendly. Thank you for the positive experience. Lown Family
Best local history youll find!
Interesting. Not a bad way to spend a couple hours
Cool little museum spread over several acres with historic homes.
A great place to learn about local history. Staff and volunteers were approachable and informative.
The reenactors of the Historic Museum where most obliging and welcoming during the famous lunar eclipse of 2017. I purchased a pigeon Aviary ornament for my Christmas tree. Go check out this historic museum. Total Eclipse Kiss with Nicole and Jim RorieAll the volunteers were most helpful and friendly! One lady named Anne Ida was so lovely that she gave me a tour of the historic pigeon aviary where they would communicate war messages on the birds feet. The atstronomy club of Augusta Georgia was very nice to let me look through their telescope at the eclipse. It was the best place to view the super moon eclipse! Thank you everyone!
Learned lots of things I didnt know about Lexingtons history. Great place to take the kids. A lot of it is outdoors though, so be mindful of the weather.
Very cool history and homes. Worth a day trip
Interesting history here.
I photograph there often and the people are always so nice
Fun place. I wish they would get more exciting tour guides.
Yeah I would give this is it I love history also but its kind of cool to see what this place used to be in what it is now especially when you go down Main Street and know that some of those buildings have been here for a couple hundred years its really cool
Great place for an inexpensive family outing to learn more about the history of Lexington county.
I have never found this place actually manned. Been around it a few times though. Would like to be able to enter the buildings though when its manned is a mystery.
What a good experience. Its a must go see.
A great place to walk around and look at old buildings and items.
Fun learning experience
A fun place to learn a lot about the times of Southern settlers
They have a neat collection of historical artifacts. We loved it!
Staff is not friendly
Very educational and staff was very friendly
Rocks! Great Museum! One of the best out of the 100s Ive ever visited. Wonderful presentation of the areas rich and diverse history, Lexington County, South Carolina. The Museum offers 36 historic structures over 7 acres of historic land. A few of the architectural wonders are on The National Register of Historic Places. Their main focus is on the daily life of the inhabitants of Lexington County from 1771-1860. They offer wonderfully guided tours by an extremely knowledgable staff. The county is one of the fastest growing counties in America. With all the growth comes a need for balance between progress and preservation. They have done an excellent job in preserving the areas tremendously rich history. If not for sherman theyd have so much more but I suppose that is in and in it of itself part of the history. There are many instances that show the strength and fortitude of Lexingtons inhabitants and their ability to overcome his _____ to rebuild their community into an area with great education, commerce, tourism, natural wonders, preservation, etcetera all while maintaining a balance between the past, present and the future. The Museum from a physical standpoint offers everything from historical homes to ephemera to Native American artifacts to inventions from the area to any aspect that represents the countys historical past. They offer special activities for kids and adults. If you think that you might have something historically important to the areas history please see below. Also, please overlook any typos. This was not easy to type using a phone!Great staff, if youre looking to donate local historical* items they will not sit in a basement or get sold, like many larger corporate-type museums. They will be displayed. *Caveat, Historically important to the area not just anything that is emotionally important to you but is important from a historical perspective to the area. The staff is wonderful. Please consult with them concerning anything you feel might be important to the museum. Its a donation so it could be of help on your taxes or in some instances items are purchased but due to very limited funds this route is not the norm. The most important thing is it will be preserved and presented to the public. You and your family can have access to it. Theyve never sold a donation or it end up stuff in a basement only to get broken, stolen, rot, etcetera. Please see them concerning anything you might have before making any decisions based on my review.
A hidden jewel of Lexington
