Bird watching. Great way for the kids to wind down and close out a day on the water. Purple Martins were abundant at sunset.Great family time.
We went to watch the Purple Martins leave the roost for the day. It did require getting up extra early in a weekend, but it was a cool experience.
The Purple Martins were so beautiful in flight. Really enjoyed the experience with family!
Super cool to watch my 3 year old thought it was very interesting. Especially with the sun setting as well.
Amazing night watching birds come home to bomb island. Thousand at a time.
Watched the arrival of purple Martins at dusk. Really beautiful setting and interesting if you enjoy nature.
I love lake Murray. Best recreational lake Ive ever put my house boat in !! Love watching the birds on bomb island . Always drop anchor close and admire.
If you can visit Bomb Island to see the purple martins return to it at sunset each summer night, then do it. It is one of those things in the natural world that is special. Thousands and thousands of them fly in after a day of foraging.
One of the only places the purple Martins roost in such unbelievable numbers. Truly amazing. A must see!! They migrate every summer from the tip of south america
This might be one of the most--very, very most most special places in South Carolina.
Bomb Island, is on Lake Murray is located in South Carolina. Its name derived from WW2, was used by Doolittles Raiders, as a target. It is the largest roost of Purple Martins in North America. A must see......
Big open views of lake Murray and considered to be a good bird watching area surrounding bomb island.
Love watching the purple Martins so relaxing.
One of the best experiences. Over 1M Purple Martins coming from all over right at sunset.
Easy afternoon/evening cruise. Anchor about 200/300 feet off shore, depth variable 20/40 feet. Caution south side mid island spit below surface 2/4 feet at full lake. Island known as bomb or Dolittle or ( on my GPS and local paper map) as lunch Island. Purple Martins by the thousands start arriving about 45 minutes before sunset. Depart about daybreak. Photographers dream. Phones do Ok but bring a good camera with variable lenses for that sailboat in the setting sun with the Martins as a background.
Beautiful Summer Nights provide guests with a view of the sunset and thousands of purple martins (bird).
Still a nice sunset but the purple Martins arent in the numbers they used to be.
The purple martins were swarming once again during an incredible sunset explanation
Not meant people know about this island becauae you have to get a boat there. But its a beautiful sight watching the Purple Martins come in at dusk. Just dont get pooped on. LoL
Definitely a must see when on Lake Murray.
Beautiful place to see purple Martins.
So beautiful watching and listening to the Purple Martins.
Went there to see the purple Martins fly in for the night. Awesome sunset!
Great place to anchor and swim. Cant go on the island itself (bird sanctuary) but there are a number of shallow sandy areas to anchor a boat. Beautiful views, great place to watch 4th of July fireworks over the lake but get there a couple hours before dark or the area fills up fast.
Very interesting place to see the roosting Purple Martins. Come before sunset and enjoy the show!
Have never seen anything like it before thousands upon thousands of purple martins on this one Island. If you get a chance to see them you should take it.
Its beautiful and so tranquil
Peaceful and quiet and beautiful
Purple Martin roost during the summer months is a true spectacle to witness.
Never knew this was even a thing to do. It was crazy how many birds were flying in a tornado style pattern
Really fun to watch the birds drifting around the island.
Such Beauty view...you have to see it!
Beautiful evening
What an experience. The Purple Martins only happens for a few days each year. If you have a chance GO. Dont forget to take a video With Sound; stil pics are not as good this time.

If you have not seen the purple martins, you are missing as surprising a site as I have ever seen! There seems to be a couple hundred thousand birds that migrate to Lake Murray ever June thru early Sept.I was Not enthused to go see the birds, but when I did, I was awestruck!! You can arrange to go with Spirit of Lake Murray dinner cruise boat!!
Now a bird sanctuary for purple martins. Illegal to get on but great to watch the birds from your boat
