My 12 Keiki did a three day surf camp in July. I wasn’t sure she would take to it, but she had a blast. They super personable folks gave her one on one instruction and had her catching waves from day one. They sent us go-pro footage from the last day.She can’t wait to do it again, and I am considering lessons for me...:)The Ty Gurney team were vigilant and FUN!

The shop closes at 4 but we got some huge traffic and only got there at 3:30. We thought they are gonna either do a 30 minute lesson or reschedule us entirely, but they actually stayed 30 minutes after closing time to give us a lesson!! Such service deserve a 5 star review. The instructor is very friendly and gives you a great land lesson first. Then he will use his toe to toe u out far into the bay, and you get to hit some super strong waves. I actually surfed on my first try!!! And believe me it is not easy. Im a sailing instructor so my balancing is great but the paddling with arms is not something Im use to. The instructor actually did a ton of paddling and toed us Really Far. Hes very patient and his teaching is super simple and effective. Highly recommend every first timer to come here. The only thing is that they dont have a restroom. So you have to go into some hotels restroom. But if you booked a resort somewhere close its no problem.

My friend & I did a semi-private lesson as our first ever surfing experience. Nate was super friendly and got us both up and surfing right away! He made sure we caught way more waves than I expected. I highly recommend this place for first time or experienced surfers!!

Long due review! But this time we had in Honolulu really made our trip memorable. Especially the video footage we received! We had two private instructors for the three of us and they helped us really get a positive first experience to surfing. Will most definitely go back when I can! You wont go wrong this surf school.

My husband, I and my seven-year-old son learned to surf together. Each one received a private lesson, which was a really good choice. The teacher taught my son friendly and safely, so he flew over Waikiki Beach at the time! I and my husband also succeeded in surfing and really enjoyed it. Thanks to the best teachers!Aloha

Ty Gurney’s surf lessons are way better than I had expected. They are super helpful and a lot of fun. My wife and I had Travis and Austin and they were great. We both successfully caught some waves by the end of the lesson. Would definitely go again and recommend completely.

My 9 year old son and 10 year old daughter had lessons on November 17th. The instructor for my son was good BUT the instructor for my daughter lost sight of her for over 15 minutes in the water. She was paddling herself on the surfboard in the ocean looking for the instructor. They need to make sure the children are supervised at all times. Luckily, they finally found her but it was not something that should have happened. Obviously, my daughter didnt learn to surf that day.

Dave was our instructor for our 11-year-old daughter, Angelika. He is so knowledgeable and professional! He was so kind, caring and patient with her! She had an absolutely wonderful experience! We tried another surf school a few days back and she didn’t want to go back there again. She said she will always come back to Ty Gurney only!!!The entire staff is so welcoming and friendly

My beginners one-on-one surf lesson with Koa was brilliant, so much fun and I felt safe and well taken care of. The feeling when I managed to get up and surf a whole wave was amazing! I got the chance to ride a bunch of waves straight away, they tow you out in the beginning and between waves so you can preserve your energy and get more out of the lesson. I think it’s worth the extra money for a one-on-one lesson since I found the hardest thing about surfing in a group was paddling, it’s extremely tiring when you don’t have the right technique. The spot at Waikiki where we surfed was just beautiful and there was even a sea turtle lurking around in the water around us!I highly recommend Ty Gurney, thanks guys for a great experience that was the highlight of my holiday!

I had Ty as my instructor and he was a radical tacher. He made everything about surfing seem easy and breezy. Very hospitable, just an amazing first time surfing experience. Am highly considering going back for another private lesson. Best surf lessons on Waikiki.

Booked a two hour private surf lesson online a few weeks before my trip to Oahu. 9 am to 11 am. Joey my instructor was great, despite the inconsistent waves during that particular day I was able to get up and ride a bunch of waves. I recommend 2 hours as you really just start to get a feel for it after an hour. Joey was great at explaining, demonstrating and instructing me on what to do different on the next wave. Im hoping to go back to TY Gurney this week !

I and my husband took 2hrs semi-private lesson which worth every cent. Chad was a great instructor! I have tried a surfing lesson before but never stood up. But with Chad, I made it easily at the 2nd wave! While I was not good at paddling, he helped me to paddle. And he also made me overcome the fear of waves. Thank you!

First time surfing attemptor here. I was terrified the entire time but managed to ride a bunch of waves. Our instructor Pat was awesome, laid back, friendly, observant and had good tips. Im blown away by the strength and endurance of surfers. My husband and I did a private lesson together. All staff was warm and friendly and helpful.I can see the appeal of this lifestyle. What to expect based on my experience:We only spent 5-10 minutes on land getting basics, then he towed us out (using his toes, insane) and took turns leading each of us to good waves. We just got right out there. You kind of learn technique and ettiquette as you go, rather than before you get out there. Honestly a once in a lifetime experience. Worth the money.Wear lots of sunblock (surfers really layer it on their faces), especially on the back of your legs bc you are on your stomach a lot. Paddling was the hardest part to me. No wonder these ppl are so fit! Im also glad I had a rash guard on, which they loaned me.You can purchase pictures and video of your time. They said they were not able to get many of us bc of our location and that theyd send what they have on the house, which I hope they do.

Instructors were excellent! After a short time on the beach where they teach you the proper way to stand, they go the extra mile (actually 1/4 mile) to tow you to a spot where the waves are the best and its not crowded. Each of us had and instructor taking care of us and they were very patient to wait for the right sized waves to get us started. We had a great time.

I highly recommend Ty Gurney surf school. Austin and Drew were absolutely amazing! After a quick few minutes of instruction on the sand, they got me out of the water and moving! I felt completely confident in standing up on the board. They truly instill the trust you can have in yourself out on the water. If I had more time on the island, I would certainly return for another lesson. Disclaimer - I dont believe lessons typically come with two instructors; they did explain that one of the two instructors was being trained. I am so glad Danielle was able to fit me in for my 1 hour SUP private lesson, even though it was about an hour and a half ahead of time. I had taken another regular surf lesson in Kailua the previous Wednesday with another school and was extremely disappointed.

I was on a business trip to Hawaii and was not going to pass the opportunity to do some surfing. I am not experience in surfing the ocean but have some experience with wake surfing so i decided to take a 1 hour lesson with Ty Gurney surf school, they are more expensive then most out there but the quality of their lessons are by far superior, the staff is knowledgeable and at no time did i feel in danger. I had lots of questions and got answers that helped me get out on my own after the lesson.I highly recommend this school. Thanks to all at Ty Gurney.

I highly recommend Ty Gurney Surf School. I had my first lesson ever, and was up on the board within 10 minutes of hitting the water. My instructor did all of the heavy lifting - he paddled me out, put me on waves, gave me a push into the wave, and came to paddle me out again after I rode a wave in. Really friendly staff - they had sun screen and a rash shirt for me to wear. Very laid back and wonderful experience for my first time on a board.

Chilled out, friendly staff. Rental prices are around $5 cheaper than the ones right on the beach. Make sure you hire the boards before 3pm as they shut around 4pm, which is a pity cause it doesnt get dark till after 7pm.

Got word from Jay that this is the best place to learn surfing so my gf and I took the 1:1 instructor lesson for 1h. We had a blast and were able to surf most of the waves. We felt secure and well guided. Totally worth the money. We havent received our link to the photos yet, but I guess they will be as excellent as the lesson was.

Highly recommended. Perfect experience start-to-finish. We loved the first lesson so much, we decided to book another.CJ - booked our appointment. She is super friendly, genuine and low pressure. We liked her a lot. She answered all our questions with a smile and seemed very well organized.Brian and Nick - our surf instructors - were on time, super friendly and professional. We trusted them right from the start. Both were clearly strong surfers, swimmers and made us feel safe so we could focus on learning. Whats more, is they are great teachers. Its one thing to be a good surfer, but not everyone is able to teach. By the end of a single, hour-long session, we had caught more waves that you might think possible for a couple beginners, catching as many as 20 waves each in a private session (highly recommended). They happily towed us out time and again after each wave, which kept things moving, and saved our energy for riding waves. (The effort required to paddle for beginners is significant.)The location - is ideal. We surfed Little Pops (near the Sheraton), which is up the shore from the Waikiki madness. This is a much better surf break to learn on I feel than the ever-crowded Canoes (the Waikiki shore break).

This was THE BEST event my wife and I did here in the seven days we were here. We did the water falls hike, coco head hike, atv tour, snorkeling, beaches at bellows afb, dole plantation and much more but this beats them all out. I suggest the end of the day lesson for the nice weather and tidal levels but I think the way they teach and get to the point of getting you on a wave is good business. You get a five minute dry run lesson but they try to just get you out and in the water because thats where you really learn. Our instructor was helpful all the way around and when the wave had too many ppl he held off and sent us on the next wave so we wouldnt have accidents with other surfers. This is the one thing that would be prescheduled next time around so we can head out as soon as we land. Thank you guys!
