I visited back in February before COVID. When you open the doors, you are immediately welcomed by the concession stand. The prices are decent! Beware that the popcorn sizes go by #mm. As a first time guest, I was slightly confused but the attendant politely explained.Just a few steps away, there is a bar with a few stools. Further in, there is also a seating/waiting area. Guests are not allowed up the stairs, I believe. One theater room with the classic red seats. The screen and audio are great. Like at any theater, I recommend sitting in the center.Overall, this is probably one of my favorite spots in Dallas. It was an amazing experience.
A long patron of the neighborhood theater. I was going to celebrate my birthday here and was unable to do so because was unable to work out a deal with the person in charge of events “Mary Katherine”. I was truly disappointed and left with a bad taste after trying to broker a deal to get football kicked off for me and my party at the Texas Theater. I do understand that Thursday night screenings are a hot commodity but due to Covid I was trying to broker a deal to include drinks and food. I was literally left on read and I felt really disrespected at the fact that Mary Katherine felt like my inquiry was not worth her time or money. I felt that 500 plus food and drinks would be a good deal for a Thursday evening 800 total would be more a wonderful deal but Mary Katherine felt otherwise. Thank you for leaving me on ready and unfortunately I will have to go and spend my money elsewhere. It sure was a good run watching Starwars movies there..... Sad sad times indeed. Hope y’all fix your communication issues because this is completely unacceptable.
This place is great, a really cozy environment.
Best place to catch a movie in NTX, hands down. Would give em twenty stars if I could . . .
Could they just maybe update the candy and drink selection to not be *deadly* toxic? They have some craft brews; those are often much safer than many assembly line drinks. Wines are really difficult to screen for problematic arsenic content because people are filtering them with diatomaceous earth in production. Also almost all the American candy is trash. If you don’t just serve Euro brands or really expensive certified b-corp brands you can only buy at Sprouts, it’s literally courting cancer from the dyes. I don’t know what they can do about that. I’d say maybe a local shop can help out. Dude Sweet Chocolate is EXPENSIVE to mark up in a theater to help support it though.
This place is a pretty cool nostalgic theater. By far it is the oldest in Dallas with lots of history behind it. Weather if you want to go and watch a movie, or just hang out at the bar with your friends, this is a place to enjoy yourself and just be you. More than likely Ill be back.
Beautiful building, cozy atmosphere, high quality film experience, personable staff; this is my favorite place to see films in Dallas. They have really special viewing programs, LOVELY staff at the bar (funny, kind, genuine), and the building is what I thought all of Texas would be like before I moved here. Highly recommend for regular date nights, treating yourself, and visiting with guests from out of town!
This theater is amazing and has history associated with it. It is very nostalgic. Surprised at how comfortable there seats were. They show alot of different movies and also have premiers for other movies. My wife and I saw Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Was an awesome show with a Q & A.
This is a great little theater to visit. The historic quality is a fine touch on a smooth experience. Staff was super friendly, and the drink options at the bar inside were even better than expected. You might need to park a few blocks away or more depending on time and type of event, but its still easy to handle. There are parking meters on the street, but they dont apply after 4pm (if I remember correctly), and on weekends. There are some nice little restaurants in the vicinity for a quick bite before an event too.
I LOVE THE TEXAS THEATRE! I visit at least once a year on Halloween for the ballet slash classic horror film event. Its a great place with a real touch of nostalgia. Old red velvet seats, a stage, and a great collection of 35mm films make this place really something special. My only complaint is the popcorn, it could definitely use more butter. But under buttered popcorn is a small price to pay to see some classic films on the big screen, restored to their former glory.
I love this place so much. The building is gorgeous... love the signs outside the building, but the interior is incredible. The events are super fun and cool, the bar stays busy, and the snacks are classic. Love watching movies in the theater. It kind of echoes around the room and it’s about as classic a theater experience as you can find. Highly recommend a visit if you love movies and/or architecture and/or supporting local art and/or history.
It was a cozy little theater with good sound. Only issue was the extremely uncomfortable, very old seats and limited leg room. Other than that everything was good. Saw Joe Bob here! Was aweosme!
Saw Jay & Silent Bob Reboot here, the roadshow. Great movie, Excellent Q&A experience. Good beer, just a little small of a lobby. Decent seats, although older so they are not on par with the new plush theatre seats at a larger venue. Overall, a great time was had.
They always have great shows! On one occasion there was a problem when they changed a showtime for an event we had already purchased tickets for on line. We could not make it at the rescheduled time. Once we reached the manager he promptly fixed the problem for us. Nice venue!
Great place to see a show.
Always a great experience ! love the atmosphere. great bar inside and music to chill. movies the way they are meant to be seen.
Such a great time and friendly bar tenders.
What a great little theater! Friendly staff, clean auditorium, and they present the perfect movie experience. I get nostalgic every time I walk in this place.
We had so much at our date night!! So much history in this place. Its pretty cozy for as many people as they can fit in that place. Get there super early - youll be waiting outside for awhile. Made friends with people in line and turned it into an adventure!
Came and watched 5th element. The Texas theater had that old school theater feel. Popcorn and frozen pizza served out of an oven were available . There is a decent sized bar right outside the main theater. The sound was kind of hard to understand at times but nonetheless I enjoyed my visit.
Great venue, great staff, and great entertainment! The theater is beautiful, and the bar is well provisioned.Freak friendly, but not required.
Amazing experience! This theatre is really cool and has free parking!
This Theatre its great, its an historic place, the people that work here its kind and friendly, the movies that are shown here, never disappoint and they are always interesting, and not very mainstream, so you can discover films here.
Very well take care of theater. Hard to believe its been around since 1931. Great peice of Dallas history
Classic old style movie theater which stills shows movies on 35mm film! Famous for being where the police found Lee Harvey Oswald after the JFK assassination. Has a museum style lobby with historic photos and a full bar in addition to standard movie snacks.
Went to see the Acrocats. Yes, cats. The venue was nice. Very historic. Parking was easy to find. We had diiner and drinks at a nearby restaurant a half a block away.
Had a great Red Carpet screening of our new film called Mystic Xrossing
Attended award program for John Cleese. A great place for these types of events. You cannot help yourself from being immersed in the history of this iconic Texas theater as soon as you see it from the street.
A piece of American History preserved very well! Enjoyed seeing El Camino there. Not a bad thing to say. The staff was very friendly as well!!
Went to the Twilight Roast and had a blast! Good popcorn, awesome decor and vibe.
Love this place. Went to see the premiere of an Independent film. Enjoyed it very much.
The Texas Theatre is a retro style old school theatre. Most filmsare those who get a limited release or retro films. Due to old vintage major issue is the sound echos a lot. Digital programs are better here. Overall it give classic theatre experience.
A historical and Nicely preserved original Art Deco architecture in the lobby and extended area. A bar is available for drinking beer and liquor. The theater area has comfortable seating an excellent sound system.
The Texas theatre is amazing. Just walking in, youre punched in the face with nostalgic wonder. Definitely the best place Ive been to watch classic films and have a drink.
It is very good the employees are very friendly
This place attracts a fun crowd. Really enjoy the special showings they do.
I love when retro movies are showing, fun to watch here. Not your average theater, always fun times here.
This is where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested. Pretty cool place with a lot of history.
Commemorating “Terry Southern Day” Oak Cliff May 2011 with a screening of Dr. Strangelove and the commemorative plaque was received by his son - Nile Southern. Terry Southern - Screenwriter - Dr. Strangelove and Easy Rider. Bling Blinky of Texas Shout Out: History still in the making at the wonderful Texas Theater!
Lots history and flavor. Small seats but huge fun. You havent lived til youve been.
A terrific place to watch a film! They always have something worth seeing.
Fantastic atmosphere whether watching a cool film or drinking at the bar.
Im going to preface this with a caveat, if youre going to see an old movie here its probably a great place to do that. Also, the staff is great and the alcohol prices are really nice. Its also historical. With that said, dont see a modern movie here, its a dump. The screen is small and the sound is atrocious. Like a decent soundbar will sound better. I understand its old, but that doesnt prevent you from upgrading the speakers and throwing some additional ones on the side walls.
Saw Jay and Silent Bob Reboot! GREAT movie, comfortable seats, great experience!
Made pictures from the seat where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after the assassination on JFK. Really nice people there.
What a fabulous piece of history! This is a great venue!
If you want anything from the concession stand and bought your tickets online. Dont bother unless you want to stand in line twice. They funnel the will call into both registers and if you get into the online ticket line they will make you go though that line and the other one. Into one register yea i get it. But when you make people who pre purchase tickets wait twice.... Wth? I love this theater. But some of the ways things are handled are just lazy or insane. You guys do have a beauty of a ticket booth. Use it as intended and it will speed up all the lines.
I got to watch The Mummy on the big screen with commentary from the Movie Likers Guild and it was so much fun! Ryan and Darcy were hilarious, as well as their guest comedians, and I plan on returning for their other shows! The building is also very cool with a cozy, inviting, and slightly surreal atmosphere that takes you warmly into the past. I highly recommend it!
Historic theater in the heart of Oak Cliff, Texas. They show an assortment of old & new films & have fun events after some of the movies.
Amazing place i love it
Wonderful place that is playing a key role in re-vitalizing the South Dallas area. Check out the lounge, have a drink, and a snack. Its so cool here, you wont want to leave. Support this amazing local business.
Sunset drive in was a great experience!
Such an awesome place to just chill and have a few drinks.
Stellar arthouse/indie theater showcasing the best new and old films, as well as comedy tours, podcasts, and live music shows in an historic building in one of the oldest parts of Dallas. Adorable lobby houses a cocktail bar staffed and frequented by local creatives, and has cool DJs spinning tunes for special events. Dont miss their intimate Behind-the-Screen live music shows (frequently paired with and following a film) Dallas Ambient Music Nights (several times a year), Tuesday Night Trash (B-movies the first Tuesday of each month), or the world reknowned Oak Cliff Film Festival (the first week in June).
This space is extremely cute. I went for a ballet performance/movie duo and loved it. The decorations made the venue. The theatre is multilevel and you can explore, but if you are claustrophobic be careful with the stairwells. Bar onsite. Another good thing is they have vintage movies and sometimes they have after parties. A bit of a downer is that they dont typically have new blockbuster movies and they have only a couple movies a night, but extremely worth it for the quality. Cant wait to go again.
I came to this theater with my grandpa and grandpa to watch The Yellow Submarine movie and it was the best experience I ever had. It was magical EVERYONE sang along with the movie, popcorn was great, and so was the drinks. I wish I could do this all over again. I will never forget it.
The stage is set for a very special night.Texas Theater is a time capsule that has nuance harkening back to an older time with its 20s deco-stylized architecture and colorful murals that cover the main foyer. Wonderfully charming and cool in its own right. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. They dont make em like this anymore, and they should.Thank You Guys! (:
Very cool place and not super hard on your wallet.
Historic theater in Oak Cliff. They host a combination of documentaries, classics, and modern movies. Small bar inside with a moderate selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks. A definite jewel of Oak Cliff
Enjoyed a fine evening in a great old theater. The staff was friendly and the movie was an excellent documentary.
This is such a cool historic theatre. The same place that Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after he shot JFK. Last night I saw Harry Potter and the Potted Potters. This was a hilarious show! I highly recommend it. But the theatre has so many fun events! Just keep an eye out for them in the observer or in the theatre website. Also, there is great food just walking distance.
This is one of my favorite theaters in Dallas. They play old movies on 35mm film. Plus there is a full bar with great drink specials!
Its great that this is still an operating theatre.
The Theater is still the same as I remember it as a kid. Had fun talking my granddaughter to watch a movie and tell her the crazy things I did when I was a kid there. Lots of good memories, old and new. The movies change, but the theater didnt. Plush seats, good popcorn and great sound. Cant wait to catch another classic at The Texas Theater.
Awesome place for anyone, anytime. Also side note, you can rent the building for your own personal events.
Awesome venue! The bartenders are generous and very accommodating. Cant wait to come back!
Great bar and fun events like David Bowie karaoke after a screening of Man Who Fell to Earth. Awesome concert venue as well. One of the crown jewels of Oak Cliff
Really cool historical place to hang out & watch a movie
I gave it a one because the beers are cheap. So not a zero. The sound system was comparable to tv speakers without sound bars. They added picnic table chairs for seating it was comparable to chairs at a barbeque at a trailer park. Overall the place is a dump.
Saw a comedy show with family and friends here. So much history in this place. They have done a great job preserving it. Quaint place, but they have done their best to stay updated and maintain the history. We enjoyed our evening.
I know its a historical land mark but it felt very dirty. It feels like they put very little effort in keeping the place in good condition.
Awesome history. Very cool venue for the Crime Junkie Live show.
Always love this theatre. Strong drinks great staff kickass content
Unique theater with some of the best programming in the world. The popcorn could be better but other than that everything else is 10/10
This theatre is the place where Lee Harvey Oswald was captured by the police. Warning surely wait staff!
It’s a great price and you can seat yourself. It’s worth showing up a little early!
This should be 4.5 and not 4, but Google does not let you do halves, it just averages out the reviews present.Huge fan of this theater, they show pretty much any movie I could want, including limited released and re-releases.Tuesday Night Trash is always such a great time, the burlesque shows that come by are really fun, and again, the movies they play are just fanastic. Ive caught a ton of movies I wasnt even alive to see in its initial run in a theater because of this theater. Movies like Suspiria, The Great Escape, Jackie Brown, incredible movies.Half a star deducted because there were a few times in the past where the sound was a huge issue. Through screenings of Eraserhead, audio was very distorted and sometimes difficult to understand. No, it wasnt the movie, the speakers sounded like they were struggling.Additionally through Sweet Sweetbacks Baadasssss Song, the audio was just really bad. Not just because it was a cheap movie, the soundtrack that played throughout was pretty much almost unintelligible. I bought the DVD release to see if that was just the quality the movie was restored in, since the screening seemed to be the 2K Vinegar Syndrome restoration and I had no issues with that version. The sound or whatever they did with the sound made it difficult to understand or hard to listen to because it all just seemed as if the speakers were going to blow out.I have not seen these issues in a long time, however. Ive been back many times since and it appears that the issue has been corrected. The popcorn also is not great, seems like it was popped way before anyone gets there and its just cool and almost stale tasting. Im not deducting anything for that since its just a menial thing, but I *really* love popcorn and just want it to be better.Im sure they make more money through the bar, anyway, so whatever. It is a really great bar!
My favorite movie theatre in Dallas. They always have something awesome going on. Great screen. Great sound. Cool bartenders and staff. And a fantastic selection of art house films.
Great little theater with a history. They have a lot of cool events.
The Texas Theatre overall is different. Most films they get are films that get a limited release and they also play a variety of retro films. They normally run programs digitally on occasion they will get 35mm film prints. My major issue is the sound. Because of the buildings acoustics the sound echos a lot. Digital programs do sound a lot better than the actual film prints shown mostly because the newer digital shows have better sound mixing. They try for a classic theatre experience but I wish they would get more wide releases so they can be enjoyed first run at an actual theatre and not just in some multiplex auditorium.
What an interesting building
Great old theater, great bar, shows a lot of great new and classic movies.
Best theater in dallas. Piece of history
My family and I just watched a wonderful documentaryTouch of Sugar...this historic theatre was clean, inviting, and a pleasant environment...the staff was nice. We had a SWEET time.
Great historical theater with very cool architecture and great place to grab a drink and catch a classic movie.
Iconic. If you see them screening a movie you love, DON’T MISS IT. Love this place so much.
Awesome experience, The Oswald seat is in the middle isle, row 3 and also 5
Great theater!
I went to watch Potted Potter with my best friend. A historical theater. Loved the atmosphere.
