Be one of the first to discover a phenomenon that isnt supposed to exist!Longest running mine in Arizona.Rare introduction to history seen nowhere else on Earth.Help keep history of the west alive and visit Castle Dome Museum.Tours available.
This is such a cool place to visit and take photos. So much detail in the structures and artifacts. Well worth the $15 to do the walking tour of the entire museum and grounds. I came on a cool and sunny weekday and was the only one there. I spent about 3 hours walking around and looking at everything. Some of it is a little spooky. The road leading to the museum is about 6 miles of moderately rough, dirt road.Pro tips: Bring your camera, drinks, sunscreen, and snacks. Beware of the ghosts!
This hidden gem is a little bit off the highway but will immediately throw you back into the 1800’s. If you are a western movie fan or just an American history buff, this city will make you relive the experience those had who were here over 100 years ago. Ask about the gravity anomaly and make sure to check out the mines
Great place to visit. It felt like a travel in time, worth a drive.
Amazing relics of a bygone era in mining. The site occupies a lot of space and there is much to see here. Bring plenty of water and spare camera batteries. Wear sunscreen and monitor for sunstroke.
A really cool place in the middle of nowhere!!This is definitely worth a visit. The last part of the drive is a dirt/Stone road for about 10 miles, but you can perfectly do it without a 4x4 car.The amount of near pictures that can be taken is endless. We even saw a coyote walking by!!You can easily spend a few hours here!Theres also a possibility to visit the mine, but we didnt do that because of too little time.Highly recommended place!
It was very informative and fun to see everything they had. So interesting.
Very nice, but expensive. No senior discount and the mine tour is cost prohibitive.
DISCLAIMER!!!: 5-7 miles before you reach the actual museum the road will be all loose gravel, if you have a small car drive SLOW!!It was a very nice outdoor museum that had this vibe of the old times.you were able to walk around freely and enter the old buildings at your own pace, the walking trail was also very interesting. You definitely need more than 2 hrs time to check everything out, worth the trip. $15 per person, but it was absolutely worth it. There were restrooms as well
Really well displayed mining equipment and housing... A good outing
It was a rough road for a bit but not awful. Its just big enough to make the drive worthwhile.
So much to see. Well worth the price of admission. $75 to tour the city and the mine. The time flew. We will do this again! Great history. Wild, luminescent walls in the mine.
Great place. So much to see.
It is a very nice historic place. The owner was very kind and showed us around a lot of places extra from the tour. Thanks a lot!
Overall I was very impressed with the size of the museum/ghost town. The gravel road is a little long, but worth it. They are continuing to expand by rebuilding the mill.We also did the mine tour. It is a fair amount of money, but I thought it was worth it. The florescent rocks were spectacular. I think the pictures actually turned out a little brighter than I remember seeing.
If you love history and beautiful desert scenery you will love this place! The road in is a little dusty and bumpy but not bad at all, just take your time and enjoy the scenery!. When you first pull up it looks very small. Looks are deceiving! There are around 50 buildings filled with period relics to explore. They only accept cash or checks, there is no ATM and they cant process credit or debit cards.Volunteers greet you when you first enter and will give a brief history of the town and show you how to get to all of the exhibits. We were very impressed with how knowledgeable they were about history of the town and mines. The tour is self guided and is divided into to two sections. The ghost town and a section containing mine shafts, a cemetery and several buildings Be sure to visit both sections and be prepared to do a lot of walking outdoors! There is a lot to see so plan for around 3 hours or more.Take a picnic, wear good comfy walking shoes and dress for the weather!
This was more then I expected lots of antiques and its a self guided tour that has lots of information If you take the time to read. The road heading to the museum is rough it starts out paved then turns to dirt roads with lots of rocks. I suggest you bring some water with you. They do have small very clean bathrooms no running water and soap just hand sanitizer. They do have a small gift shop and next door they have a little food stand that has small snacks drinks and hotdogs. It does have lots of parking and it did look like a camp ground but not sure. Anyhow my family had a great time and we will be back to visit for sure.
Awesome place to visit to learn a little about the mining history. The road in is unpaved and quite a drive, but worth it once you arrive.
Great place to learn about history in this area. Lots of original equipment and knick knacks from mining towns. The road going in is gravel and rough as hell. Long too(at least 6 miles) but worth the trip. When you think youve gone too far, just keep going. The road will dead end into the museum. The staff was extremely nice and knowledgeable. Definitely worth the 15 dollars. Next year theyre expanding to another site and there youll actually take a tram ride down about 500 feet into an old mine.
Spent a day here enjoying the old town and also going down into the mine a few days after Christmas. Very interesting and educational.. The husband who gave us the mine tour was enjoyable and his wife very sweet.
Was a very good couple hours.
Amazing history, great place to visit. I highly recommend.
Great if theyd post their hours at the entrance rather than a 7 mile drive on washboard dusty road to find out we should call for an appointment .
My wife and I really enjoyed the museum. We did not do the mine tour thinking it too expensive. We also thought that $15 was a little spendy.I visited a museum last fall in Flagstaff that costs me nothing and I enjoyed it more. But if youve never seen this kind of place, I think you should do so. It was very hardy people that created places like this 150+ years ago.It is interesting
Castledome mine is enchanting. You will enjoy placing yourself in a variety of photos that will mske time of your life go a bit backwards.
This is a cool place to visit but I was very disappointed. I was told its wheelchair accessible which it is not at all. I took my wheelchair veteran friend. They are not even think of being Ada compliant. Thankfully he can walk on crutches a bit but could not enter even the front museum or many of the buildings. Their wheelchair entrance is litullary through a ditch.
This is an interesting place to visit.
It was okay there were many fun artifacts and buildings to see and for children to explore but the cost was high and the cost for the mine your was absolutely prohibitive. We would of liked to have seen that. The cost was much more than we expected in general at $15 per person and the very long gravel road was also unexpected but now we know.
Great ghost town!
Wow, great place to visit. History at your finger tips, from the town and all the buildings you can walk around in, to the actual viewing of the mine shafts on the walk, great place to spend the day. Very interesting.
We have been here twice, and enjoyed it so much both times. Im a photographer, and this is a photographers paradise. I love the history that has been gathered, and preserved in this space especially. To think that so much of this would have been lost is heartbreaking. The restoration work that has been done is top quality, and it is just a fun walk through museum.
A fun spot if youre in the area! And a cool geocache as well!
Great place with lots of history.
Nice ghost town, bring at least gallon of water and b prepared to walk.
I have been here multiples of times and enjoyed each visit. Taking the grandkids is a must. No fancy citified nonsense here just the feel that your surrounded by old time AZ history. The prices of the underground mine tour have not let me go there however. Take a lunch, no food provided, picnic under the trees and enjoy the sight of towering Castle Dome in the background.
This place has been around for awhile, but the owners revamped it adding an actual mine tour. When you get deep into the shafts, they have black lamps set up so you can see how different minerals illuminate or glow. Its actually pretty fascinating. So the cost when I was there was 75 bucks, and there is now a wait list. Expect to be here about 4 hours to explore, which you will want to do. Lunch and rides are included. Definitely a myst if your a history, or mine buff. The tour guides are knowledgeable and answer questions. There are mines, old buildings, and best off all they are all open to go thru.... when you pay the admin price
The owner is blocking the road to your public lands. When visiting the area I tried to go to the Castle Dome Peak Trailhead for a short dayhike and I was approached by the owner of the museum when I was preparing to open the gates to cross their very narrow section of land that crosses the public road that leads to Casle Dome. The museum owner made it very obvious that I was not welcome there and that they do not enjoy people crossing their land to go to the public lands. Though they enjoy an easement through the miltary range they threatened that they are going close down the easement through their land to the rest of the Castle Dome area of the Kofa Wildlife Refuge. I highly recommend seeing the Castle Dome area of the Kofa Wildlife Refuge beyond this museum it is absolutely beautiful. It should be illegal for this guy to block access to our taxpayer lands.
Awesome place! We had a great time! If you love old bottles, artifacts, history, this is the place for you!
Second time we have been here. They continue to restore and add. A lot of history, it is a rock road for about 10 miles. A good walking tour.
Great place to spend an hour or two. Follow signs or gps. It take 20 min to get there. The road turns into a bumpy gravel road half way there. We took a motor home without problems, but if you are pulling a long trailer, you might have a difficulties getting turned around.
What an interesting place! Being an active mine from the 1809’s thru 1970’s, there is a lot of variety of memorabilia. Interesting and fun to look at plus the mines, a cemetary and various cabins. A fun way to spend an afternoon.
Very cool, I’ve been there many times since 2010. I was there for a festival, there was a gunfight on main street, a barber shop quartet, The hotel was Jefferson Davis boyhood home. A great experience!
Very interesting, you can go into the old buildings. But we thought $15 per person was a bit high.
Museum? Im not sure about it. It is more like a collection of really old and dusty rooms and rusty metals. Things that I didnt understand is, the houses are built to show the life of the miners back then so why not built something nice and clean? Or leave the way the miners left it. Interesting part of it is there is $15 fee (that sounds a joke but it is real). I guess after a bumpy ride to the museum I expected a little more than that. If you expect a couple of dusty rooms filled with old empty bottles and rusty metals you probably are not going to be disappointed.
Very interesting and worth visiting!
These amazing colors of the Hull mine is what we went for. The ghost town was interesting too.
Theyve done a good job of recreating the feeling of an old mining town. Glad I live in this century!
Was shocked at how expensive for unguided tour. 15.00 each, 80.00 for mine tour.Restrooms were terrible. I have been in better honey bucket portapottys . No food except self serve water, chips, snacks. Interesting artifacts thowever .Buildings brought in from other communities, not an authentic town. If you are looking for restaurant, cafe or gift shop, not the place for you.
Very cool to walk around at our own pace and see how life was lived in the mine town through out its history.
Its way way off the beaten path down a long dirt washboard road. The cost is $15 per person. Seems like a lot of money. The lady running the place was rude and very unpleasant and wouldnt let me use a restroom until I paid the $15. Will never recommend this trip to anybody
A trip back in time. Real wild west city.
One of the best views in Arizona!
Very interesting and well depicted exhibits of life on a silver claim all the way back to the 1800s. If you havent been there for a while they found a 50ft column of phosphorescent rock about 2 years ago.
Interesting museum and ghost town. Fun to walk through and see all the old artifacts from the mining town. After the six miles of dirt road it was worth the $15 to see it.
No explanation of equipment on display,. Very little history explained. Self guided. Rude staff. Only good thing is the views. And scenery.
Nicely done privately owned museum. Worth the few miles travel off highlway 95
Such a neat little town, we really enjoyed our visit. It was really windy while we were there, so we didnt get to wander around the entire museum, so we really want to come back to see what we missed out on.
Well worth the $15 admission to the museum. Needs more curating of the many artifacts & antiques, and signage for the mining area could be more obvious! We had to look for the signs to enter through this or that fence. Super quiet up there, untouched desert, definitely recommend a visit here if in the area. Worth the 10 miles on dirt road through the proving grounds.
This was our first time and we found it so interesting that we share with friends.
AWESOME! this place has so much history, one of the first mine settlements, I have had family here in Yuma all my life, until a couple years ago didnt even know this place existed.finally made the move to Yuma from California myself, hands down coolest place I have been so far!! Will definitely be visiting again.
Very interesting for all ages.
Beautiful place to visit and I recommend doing the mine tour
Good place to take your out of town guests.
Great ghost town museum celebrating the area mining history .If you like mining history, this is a must see. Beware tho, the long dirt road to the museum is known for eating tires.
Worth the effort in the car. Road is very rutted and unpaved so be careful in an RV
Excellent piece of history, really good considering how far they are from anything else. Worth the drive and the 15 $. Didnt have the time (2 1/2 hours) for the movie tour, unfortunately. That would have been 75$ for both the mine for and the museum.
Very interesting
Lots of fun
Place was well worth it. Id go again. Im sure Id see something I didnt this time.
Lots to see. You can spend hours exploring the old buildings.
This place is so fun to visit! My husband and I really enjoyed our time here. The history and artifacts are so interesting and fun to see and we did the hull mine tour which is AMAZING! There’s minerals that glow inside the mine and it’s so pretty. The tour guides were great and taught us a lot about the history of the town. Definitely coming again
Great fun day to show History of Arizona
Alot to see was fun
Great Museum! Before you get on the road, know that you have to drive 7 miles of dirt road!
This was an interesting way to spend a few hours. There a large number of buildings and exhibits to wander through. There is a 7 mile or so gravel road so take your time. A few of the stories have weathered to point that they are unreadable but theres still lots to do.
All kinds of remember whens and never seen befores
Its very cool being out in the middle of nowhere and just imagining this ghost town used to be bustling town. Check it out!!
What an incredible undertaking and cool results from 2 old guys as our guide calls his partner and himself. The mine comes to life as you are driven down 100 and experience short walks to a number of interesting points. Lights out--glow is on! Clean, clean, clean...the whole place has great walking paths around a reconstructed town with so many original items and buildings gathered from the local area. Bathrooms are modern, clean and plentiful. Just a fun experience to head back in time a bit and learn something about the ground below.
What a wonderful place! The history of mining, circa 1873. The tour of the museum was outstanding. Lots of buildings to go through... So much to see. Youll want to allow at least 2 hours. The Mine tour is excellent! The biggest mine of its kind, in the world! It has phosphorescent minerals. Its awesome! Worth every dollar of the $75!
This place is well worth the 10 mile drive on the dirt road. Sits right at the base of the Castle Dome Mount. The tour takes you 100 feet down underground where it is nice and cool. You get a spectacular color show of all the minerals in the rock. You are even shown where the fault is that runs through that mountain. Just an amazing place to visit. Will be sure to go again!
Disappointing. We traveled the 10 miles on washboarded dirt road to find out they closed early. Probably wont go back.
We had a great day at Castle Dome museum. If youre planning to go visit Im sure you take lots of time has theres lots to see in the displays.take snacks or lunch with you as theres no food on location. Youll also want to take cash as there is a premium charged if you use your Visa card. additionally if youre planning on doing the mine tour it is $60 per person and leaves around 2. We didnt have the time to do it as we arrived around 1:30 and all we could squeeze and was a tour of the town. it was a great experience even driving 7 miles on a rock and dirt road to get there through the government proving grounds.
Ive recommended this place to so many people in person. A MUST see if in Arizona. The BEST preserved Western town and a real treasure. Its privately owned and not a museum, so you get to touch and spend some time alone in the buildings which really transports you back in time to that era. A++++
I would suggest anyone to take this tour and visit the ghost town. I have been on tours all across the country and have never had a tour guide as knowledgeable and well rounded as Kent. On top of all the hard work put into the mine and town it is well worth the money!!! The mine was a nice cool down after a walk through the ghost town. Thank you Kent and Alan for all your hard work to preserve this slice of history.
What a great place. Although its a tourist town, I would not miss this stop. The roads are good for all rig setups.
Very interesting. Quotes and stories placed on the walls. Samples of ores, clothes, glassware, I just found the place interesting to wander around and look through.
Great experience here! There is a lot of cool stuff from mining towns all over the southwest, so it really feels like you’re getting a glimpse of life back in the late 1800s. Also, definitely do the mine tour ($60 extra) to see some incredible minerals and silver veins. The owners are very knowledgeable and are really fun to talk to.
If you are a history junkie like myself, this is a definite must see!! While visiting in Yuma we found this listing and we were off on an adventure. The long dirt road (just travel at a slower speed) provides you just a little insight as to what traveling was like back in those times. I just cant imagine traveling it without the modern comforts that we take for granted daily.Im not going to hide the fact that when we drove up, it did not look like much. When we entered, we were greeted by Bob and Debbie who provided us with so much information that it really reflects their passion for history. Once inside the ghost town, which is a collection of relics and theme based buildings, all thoughtfully placed together, it initially looked small... But pleasantly, we were surprised with how far the property continued.I do recommend several hours in order to really absorb this unique collection. We were also shocked to discover that there was an additional area that consisted of safely displayed mine shafts entrances and additional buildings as we were leaving. I really do wish there were more placed like this that explores our history. Cowboy hats off to Bob and Debbie for their gracious hospitality!!!
Great place, great historical place. Just an awesome time. So much to see and photo.
A must go location authentically recreated Old West Town
Long gravel road. $15 per person entry fee. No handicapped access. The lady at the counter was very rude. Dont recommend.
Very surprised! When we walked in and learned it was $15 there was some hesitation. But turns out to be well worth it! These folks have done an excellent, noteworthy job on the overall presentation. Well maintained, abundant details, interesting content. I took over two hundred pictures! Expected to spend maybe twenty minutes and we were there over two hours! Dont let the road scare you, any passenger car can do it.
Awesome Place To Check Out!
Road is terrible and very long. It looks like it would be a nice museum, but we thought the $15 per person was too much to walk around and see a few building. The owners were very nice and I wish them success. But I dont think they will get repeat visitors due to the road conditions.
Well done labor of love! Very interesting & enjoyable! We took our picnic lunch and enjoyed the scenery!
Awesome place! Wish there was better signage to find the second location.
