Awesome sight to see. One of the most historical sites in wheeling. I have actually seen a picture of a pig farmer rustling his pigs accross the bridge way back when. Its getting to the point where if you dont see it now, you may never get the chance to.

This is a really cool stop to make on a road trip. I really enjoyed that they closed the bridge to vehicular traffic so you can safely walk along the middle of the bridge. Unfortunately Wheeling looked almost like a ghost town with how few people were around and how many shops were closed down and abandoned.

Cool bridge! A little unnerving on a motorcycle (you can see through the bridge to the water) but worth the jaunt!

I love this bridge! Great piece of transportation history...very interesting learning about the importance it had on the development of the West. Ive lived in this valley all my life...it is a shame kids dont learn local history in school. This is the oldest suspension bridge open to current vehicular transportation IN THE WORLD. AMAZING!Note: There is a weight limit on this structure...NO TRUCKS ALLOWED. Meaning no trucks larger than a pick-up allowed to cross.

This is a really nice historic bridge to visit and walk across. It can make you a little light headed if you are afraid of heights. I enjoyed the view down the river and of boats going by.

Very cool bridge. It can be hard to believe that this was once a huge engineering accomplishment. If you’re walking down the sidewalk, you can feel the bridge bounce a little each time a car passes.

This bridge has been my favorite since childhood. It is so well constructed, it amazes me how long it has lasted and is still being used. It makes a great backdrop to the waterfront concerts and movies, as well as the fireworks display on the Fourth of July. Love to walk across it and look out over the river.

50 years ago, as a kid hanging out summers at Grandmothers house (former W.Va Governors mansion built 1860-64 at 310 N. Front) walked island to this bridge now 170 years young, over, down Main or past The Capitol Theater to south Wheeling to catch the Greyhound Bus that went to Oglesby Park Country Club youth sports camp 4 days a week. The bridge walk in the early mornings, the Ohio running underneath, being a kid visiting and living summers every year away from Saint Petersburg, FL. this was a kick to the daily adventure golfing, playing tennis, equestrian horse riding, and oaring that were ahead after the hour plus bus ride up the mountain. After each days Oglesby Mountain Camp, and another hours plus bus trip down the mountain to lower Wheeling, the walk up the hill of downtown, getting to the music shop on corner of bridge street, i knew that when i walked around the corner of the music shop i would this awe-striking steel true cable suspension bridge from 1849. It meant that once i got over to the island i was just a half miles walk to yet another world - The Island Life - at grandmothers Wheeling island riverfront view from the bank back to the south of this timeless old bridge i had just walked over. Twice a day for several years several summers. I hear that still allowing limited widely spaced vehicle traffic over this interesting bridge.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is, I believe, the first bridge to have crossed the Ohio and is still in service after all these years. It carries traffic to and from downtown Wheeling to Wheeling Island. The bridge is a unique experience as there arent too many of these old bridges still in service. Walking the bridge is also a treat as on a windy day you can feel the bridge move with the wind.
