The 1928 statue titled “The Mingo” was erected as a tribute to the 1700s Native American inhabitants of the Wheeling vicinity. Mingo is the name European settlers gave to Iroquois people, primarily Seneca and Cuyuga, who moved from New York to the Ohio River Valley in the eighteenth century. The statue is positioned at the intersection of two parallel streets making it difficult to view in close proximity. Be careful of the traffic. The setting is at the highway summit on the high ridge between Wheeling Creek and the Ohio River. The sculptor was Henry Oscar Beu. There is a white border postcard showing the statue under a street light (see pictures).
Terrible place. Was really musty.
