Thought users of Google Maps might want to see some old photos of the C & O Canal and related structures. Many of these photos I am posting are from Civil War era (including Mathew Brady/Levin Handy, Library of Congress) to early 20th century. The photos were compiled in the book, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Old Picture Album by Thomas F. Hahn. One early photo I find interesting is of a group of DC school children on a field trip to the canal. Others show various scenes in Georgetown including locks and the arch bridge at Wisconsin Ave.
The C&O Canal has been restored in Georgetown.
What a great hidden gem in DC! Whether you fancy yourself a runner, biker, or speed walker, the C&O canal offers an excellent scenic trail for you to practice your sport. I love running on this trail because I find the dirt to be much more forgiving on my joints than Tarmac. Plus, the scenery is definitely something to brag about. Lots of weeping trees, wide open waters, and even Blue Herons standing on rocks looking stoic.
