Great trails to explore! Well maintained fire access lanes and smaller trails. Great loops for a 1-2 hour hikes. Good for hiking, running, biking.. You will also see the occasional person on a horse and cattle roaming the hills. Very picturesque open hills. Street parking in the neighborhood. No restrooms.
This is a beautiful place to spend some time. Hiking trails, BBQ pit with tables, restroom right next to area and plenty of wildlife. Some pics of deer, but many small wildlife too. Bird watching offers many varieties big and small. Watched a red headed woodpecker yesterday along with turkey vultures and hawks. The road is very narrow so if someone is coming the other way someones got to pull over to be able to get past.
Large open space park reserve for long hikes on days with nice weather. Very scenic. For those with delicate hearts, be mindful of what trails you hike because some trails are quite steep. Consult a map of the open space before your intended hike, so you know what types of inclines and altitudes youll encounter on your chosen trail.
Long trails, well taken care of, definitely love coming here. We let our dogs roam around off leash. Trails are really wide, if you have a mountain bike, you could probably ride the trails.
Such a great place right near the city yet so quiet, steep hiking paths, narrow winding paths, great for your dogs to explore around
Wow.. the wildlife is so active in the early morning.. midmorning hoards of people arrived.. it is a thanksgiving holiday attraction
Its a great place to walk. I wish there were more trash cans besides at the entrances, but outside of that, Im grateful we have such a large open space so easily accessible.
Lots of trails to run/walk around the base of Mt Diablo. Be careful of your animals on a hot day as it gets toasty here.
Shell Ridge is one of my favorite hidden treasures of this area. It has wooded areas combined with big open grassy spaces, and ponds when the weather allows! I love the off leash hiking areas, and every dog Ive encountered on that trail has been well behaved and appropriate. There is also a good variety of terrain: it goes from flat to steep to everything in between throughout the trail, which makes for an extra good workout!Bonus: its a fantastic location for pet photography!
Nice quite open space away from homes but not far. In a valley but peaceful.
Well maintained trails and some amazing views if youre willing to put in the work.
Simply outrageous spot full of beauty and refreshing! woW... a must visit for everyone who enjoys an open space and want to see the beauty of Nature..
Awesome trails. Not too crowded.
Like the hike there, not really crowded.
Got to love this place! Plenty of rocks to climb and rest on. Always fun for the kids and dogs. More fun to be outside having an adventure!
One of my favorite places for an afternoon hike.
Overall great place for a hike. Theres quite a few different trails in the space, though not a lot of shade.
Beautiful place
It has a lot of trails to take. I didnt go far since it was hot and the dog is old. Dogs live playing up there. There is a water faucet and drinking fountain at the Sutherland entrance. If you bring bowl, you can gove the dog some water.
Nice mixed use area. Lots of dogs, hikers and some mountain bikes. The only downside is there is a lot of feces on the trail. But there are.also a few fossils!
Amazing hike spot you will have amazing
I love hiking with my kids and my dog
Theres several trails branching of of each other so you can make as large s loop as you want
Nice well used park. Has hills, flat trails and seasonal ponds. Not enough trees on hot summer days. Very dog friendly. Bicycles have average, non-technical routes.
Beautiful area to explore, run and walk with man’s best friend who isn’t confined to the length of a leash. We need more areas like this, where dogs and humans can coexist without the need for constraint.
Really cool place to rider and hike with friends or just by yourself. There is usually a little path for you to walk on throughout the entire trail. The trial is very long and consists of many different sections. The trial is bike and hiking friendly. The roses are pretty roughly made so only use a mountain bike on this trial. I have some videos that I made while riding there.
Nice to go on hikes! The views are amazing! Plus my dog loves this place!
Absolute best place in the area for hiking!
Love it. The dogs love it. Beautiful. Lets keep it.
Very beautiful park that you can bring your dogs to. And the shells in the rocks are just beautiful and amazing to look at
One of the best places to run for long distance and rolling hills.
There are plenty of hikes within the park. The one we did, it was an easy one. A loop that took us 40mins.On the way, we come across people biking, hiking and walking their dogs. Its a pet friendly park. You can find cows on the way... Watch out, cause they might walk towards you.Back at the ranch, there are several animals that you can visit.
It doesnt have the most dramatic views, but for a free city park, its great for an after work workout hike. Lots of trail intersections means you can adjust the length of your hike by doing shorter or longer loops. Climb up to the ridge to watch sunset, almost as good as going up Mt. Diablo.
When we moved into the neighborhood over 20 years ago, we didnt know what a treasure lay nearby. This is a beautiful and well-maintained hiking area with lots of inviting trails. My only complaint is that its home to lots of rattlesnakes.
Lovely hikes here, especially the top of the ridge itself. Very accessible and generally quiet + dog friendly. Wouldnt recommend going on a hot day if your dog has sensitive feet since there are some paved paths in the beginning sections, but theres plenty of other space to roam in the shade and on hilltops. Feels surprisingly secluded for being right in the middle of Walnut Creek.I like the Marshall Drive entry near the elementary school - very quick to the top.
Great neighborhood resource. Lots of looping trails where you can walk for as little or as long as you want. One can hike to Borges ranch or all the the way to Mt Diablo state park. Generally their are other people and friendly dogs around. Just be careful of the rattlesnakes during the spring and summer months. I’ve come across them sunning themselves on the trail during the day.
Walk or hike or bike here every day. Never gets old.
Great place to hike with a lot of trails, free parking, and dog friendly
Good place for dog walking, use care, lots of rattlesnakes, coyotes.
Always beautiful!
Visited mid-September and without the tree coverage, this hike was *brutal.* Thank goodness we aimed for a cloudy day. If its sunny, stick to ridge trail and Indian Creek trail.
Awesome place to camp. As a boy scout, I took a 3-day, 2-night campout here, and it was a blast. The atmosphere is usually a warm temperature and breezy, light winds. When you have the time, take a trip here.
Beautiful and open. Good for a cool morning hike. Not good for the summer, because there is little shade.
Great place to explore. Amazing views to be had based on the length if your walk, and which oeak you decide to summit.
Lovely time of year to hike there. At least one easy access pointto a trailhead from public transit. (County Connection #1 bus stop at John Muir Hospital Walnut Creek) Not too hot or cold. Trails not muddy. Hillsides a beautiful green. Trail intersections well marked. Excellent choices for how vigorous a climb you want. Dont think it could have been lovelier or more peaceful.
This park has a great trail system. It has a large number of connecting trails which is perfect for building a route of any length. Lots of hills, but the grades arent too steep, and the myriad of trail options allow you to bypass some of the steeper routes. Go in the spring when the hills are green and double the beauty by starting just before sunrise.
Rolling hills hiking. Not a lot of people. Also you can mountain bike.Need water for the people visiting if possible to install.
Easy to get away yet be close to civilization. Great views. Either mountain biking or hiking, fun for all. Warning: bring plenty of water. No facilities for it in park. Recommended going early morning or very late afternoon, not mid day especially in hot weather.
Great open space with lots of spectacular views!
Great area for a hike and a picnic.
Amazing views. Great hike.
Looks better than anything in Los Angeles!
Love to hike here...so close to home but so far from every day life
Beautiful area with lots of trails, mostly pretty easy, wildlife, and tons of space to walk, hike, run, etc. Great place to take dogs.
Amazing! Such incredible beauty and trails. Trails are moderate.
Absolutely beautiful, especially during Spring and early Summer wild flower season.
Lots of trails for all levels.
We walked the Indian Creek Trail from the Mitchell Drive Trailhead, which was a fun, scenic and easy walk. More challenging trails, especially up to the ridge top, are also available. The Shell Ridge Recreation Area is a wonderland for locals and visitors who love hiking, biking and running with their dogs in a beautiful, inspiring setting. Be sure to pack water.
Peaceful, safe
Dogs are welcome off lease. Coyotes do roam here FYI but are seen rarely
Nice get away from the city hussle
Great trails and awesome views!
So many different trails, and dogs are welcome.
I grew up in the these hills. This literally was my backyard. I still hike and ride my horse here often. Lets prey that this open space will remain that and never allow it to become developed. It would a crime to see anything happen to these beautiful green and gold rolling hills.
Beautiful spring day with poppies on the ridge
Hiking, views, dogs. .....
I cant like this place any more. Some of it is open to dogs. Great place to hike near downtown Walnut Creek. Lots of local CA wildlife frequent the place.
Great hiking here! Well maintained trails in the whole area here!
Lovely open foothills of Mount Diablo with native plant restoration being done by volunteers. Not much shade, not many trees but many beautiful open Meadows and hillsides.
Great find, dog friendly, many options scaling from peaceful walk to aggressive hike. Beautiful gem in Walnut Creek. Only issue, get there early for parking.
Gorgeous rolling hills, many trails including ridgelines, not a lot of people. This area, like the rest of the east bay, can get a little hot in the dead of summer, but spring/winter/fall and early mornings are great times to visit this beautiful, expansive park.
Many trails of moderate difficulty with panoramic views.
Beautiful rolling hills, was once all under water so lots of sand and shell fossils. Great place for dogs!
Beautiful during winter and spring. Options for easy trails
Unbelievable views. Perfection.
Great place to hike. If you get off the main trails on the weekdays you will have the place to yourself.
Great hiking. Lots of steep trails! Love it!
Its beautiful and an easy 90 minute loop.
Great place for moderate hiking but be aware it is very popular place for walking dogs off leash
Great views, great hikes, great atmosphere. I love this place!
Lots of great multi use and hiking trails. Fun for easy mountain biking or a long hike.
Ride my Moutain Bike here all the time. The trails are great!
Fun, some single track, great for gravel bikes.
Great trails for morning / evening runs. Watch out for rattle snakes in the summer time.
So many trails and great scenery. Dogs loved it
No water and not enough benches to rest on. Terrible to hike when its even a little warm and the trails are far steeper than described
Not bad, but usually not much to do
Nice combination of flat and hill terrain.
