Absolutely beautiful views. Great views of the surrounding area during the day and beautiful light display from the cities below at night. Campground was well maintained although there is no water currently due to drought conditions. Well maintained and marked trails, some good workouts for sure. From the campground the summit trail has 1000 gain in a mile so a pretty good slope but they did a nice job of giving the trail some cover along the way. The drive up is definitely very windy, we have a 16 trailer and were fine taking it slow and steady but I think anything much larger would be quite a challenge
What a beautiful drive. We entered through Walnut creek and drove to the top lot where we proceeded to take the handy-cap paved trail for a short hike. The views were stunning and the view points were not crowded, in fact we were the only people on this trail despite the lot being full. There is a wooden ramp structure that serves as a viewpoint complete with public binoculars and telescopes. This specific trail gave a view the step pyramidal structure that is the quarry and sprawled out to beyond the delta.
Great park, at short driving distance from the East Bay. Grand Loop hike is totally worth for half day hike in the mountains.Although we probably chose a wrong day: too much sun!The park is quiet and not crowded owing to covid-19.And yes, if youre into ornithology, youll see a lot of birds on trails here. Hummingbirds, bee-eaters and jays! All worth for the beautiful views!
Fabulous park with scenic trails and views.
Its always nice to be at the park.
Beautiful drive. Great views, lots of wildlife
First time up to the summit at Mt. Diablo today. It was beautiful! The road wasnt too busy. People were nice when sharing the road. Its $10 to enter the park. I saw lots of picnic areas open. Restrooms were also open and fairly clean, no soap though so make sure to bring your open wipes or hand sanitizer.
Mount Diablo Located at Walnut Creek. Great place to hikes and exploring the area. This place is the highest peak in the Bay Area. Enjoy the the Majestic view. Drive all the way to summit and explore. The road to go up kind a curvy and sharp turn. Watch out for the bikers. $10 entrance fee.
The sunset are beautiful here to watch. Plenty of parking turnouts on the road to get a good view of you dont want to go all the way to the top.
Nice view of Bay Area and more. Go to the summit and check out visitor center. You will see an exhibit that tells a little bit of its history. Awesome place for a quick getaway. Watch out for bicyclists.
Absolute awesome place to go hiking while in NorCal. There are multiple paths in order to get to the peak and the trails are decently marked well. The terrain is smooth and there is good traction the entire time on the hike. At the very top there is a somewhat lighthouse monument that has some history to it. The views are great there and offers a 360 degree view at the peak.
Amazing variety Of inclined hikes with stunning views. If anyone wants to hike around the summit here is an outline of one I did that took close to 4 hours. I parked at Diablo valley overlook which doesnt come up on Google maps but if you go to Juniper campground its a huge pullout you cant miss just before the campground. I went counter clockwise which starts with a very steep incline and ends with a gradual but long incline. I think clockwise would have been the way to go . I went juniper trail (cut across road to continue)- summit trail -north peak trail - bald ridge trail- meridian ridge (fire road) - deer flat road(fire road). Make a stop at rock city on your way out of the park!
Went on the 4 peak hike starting at Mitchell Canyon. It started of drizzling in the morning but turned out to be a fantastic day for hiking. The views are amazing from all sides of the mountain and the clouds made for some cool pictures. Even got to see a couple tarantulas!! Loved it and will be back again often.
One can get 360 dergree view of bay area.Magical.
Great place for mountain biking and hiking, but be ready for big steep climbs and some very rocky downhills. When the flowers and everything is green its beautiful to enjoy nature. Can always see many birds, and saw multiple hawks today, in addition to many many turkeys, squirrels and lizards. Poison oak is prevalent all around the park, so keep an eye out, most double track trails are clear of it, but singletracks can have some threatening the trail goers. Be ready to spend a few hours exploring.
I recommend visiting Mt. Diablo. There is a beautiful view during the entire drive up, plenty of boulders to climb if youre careful. Overall just a beautiful place!
Absolutely stunning views!! A real pleasure to visit. I went w my young kids and that wasnt a problem because you can drive to the summit. There are so many picnic areas and glorious views and abundant wildlife. The visitor center at the top was closed but there was a restroom and an observation tower w a 360 scenic view. I highly recommend!
Its a great place to hike, bike or just drove to the top. There are two ways you can drove. We took seperate ways while going up and coming down to enjoy the view from all the side. Once you are the top, you have an option to walk through the trail to explore more about the rocks and its history. There is a 10 15 minute video you can watch to understand more about the history. You can buy some refreshments at the top. They accept all cards and even apple pay. We went in December and had some breathtaking views. Make sure to drive slowly to have a safe trip.
Good hiking trails and views. Loved camping here
Absolutely amazing! This was just a quick trip for me, in town for work and wanted to do something Ive never done before. Im from Illinois where the closest to mountains we have seem to be speed bumps. So climb (drive) a mountain it is! Honestly, I was white knuckled the majority of the way up. But the roads are paved and maintained wonderfully. You need to be careful of the bikers (with calves of steel), and the random gang of HUGE turkeys and what I think were quail. Appreciate there are Bobcats in the area as well. Your drive up will be worth it when you get to the very top, and climb 2 small flights of stairs to the observation area. Unobstructed 360 degree views. It was breathtaking!Side note- the ride down is a lot quicker and more fun!Cost: $10. Worth it!
Nice place for a weekend trip. You have the picnic area, the hike trails, perfect for a family trip. Couldnt explore much this time because of the restrictions, will update later after visiting this place again.
I like hiking and hills. And this place covers both. There are a lot of trails for every one. You can find great views and interesting nature up there. Of course you can get the top by car but thats not very good. Much better start down the hill and go up to the highest point. :) It was foggy when I was there and I did see the valleys and places far across the mountain but trails were quite and mystical. Will go back for sure.
My friends say this is our backyard. Love it! Hiking in Mt. Diablo is enjoyable. Very good views, close to road, routes for all levels of hikers.
Long, curvy drive with lots of cyclists, so take your time. Informational video taught us so much about the area! Well worth the 30min. Elevator was not working, which was challenging for my 92yr old companion. Ranger kindly unlocked the accessible restroom for us. Rock City and the wind cave is worth exploring! Numerous shaded picnic spots along both North and South Gate roads.
Great views, great hiking, narrow roads. Ive been to the park many times over the years, and the roads can be a joy to drive with some amazing views as you get farther up the mountain. But pick your time and day.Caveat: I was on the mountain with a friend to help in one of the many radio towers, which didnt diminish the views, but did put some constraints on how long we could enjoy them.We were visiting on new years day, which the Ranger described as the busiest of the year. What he meant was . . . Bicycles. Hordes of them. Moving slowly up the hill, and coming down at speed and yelling at any car that dared cross the center line to get around a bike going up hill at a walking pace.If we had been there to enjoy the scenery and park, it wouldnt have been so bad. Or if we had been there at a time when the road was a bit clearer, it would have been fine. But as I said, pick your day. If you dont mind the crawl, and the views ARE worth it, any clear day is good! Otherwise, go on one of the off days when the road itself is enjoyable, and the views are fantastic.
A great park. Not crowded at all during COVID-19, and we didnt see anyone wanting us to pay, so I guess entrance fees are waived. Anyways, great park, just beware that on the drive up, lots of steep drops so be careful - no barriers. One wrong turn and DISASTER.
When you get to the top you have a 360 View and the views are awesome!!!!
Incredibly pristine Park. Views are beautiful and unspoiled. Unlike a lot of parks it looks like people dont really know about this park. Theres little graffiti if any on any of the structures and its all well maintained. I didnt get a chance to walk the trails but I could see from the road that they were gorgeous and would be a lot of fun to hike on.Theres a lot of bike traffic so you do have to drive slowly around the curves. There are also a number of incredible picnic spots. Your Google GPS may say it takes about 45 minutes to get to the summit, thats about right. The roads are very windy so you have to drive really slow to get to the top. But its worth the drive.
This was my first time at Mt. Diablo State Park. We camped for one night at Live Oak campground with the plan to hike to the summit of the mountain. The drive up to Live Oak campground was enough to get me excited about the hike to the top. The view from the road was awesome the entire way to 1,450 feet, the elevation of the campground. The campground wasnt crowded and we chose a spot easily. All the facilities were nice, including tiled bathrooms and running water every few campsites. Some sites only had the old style stove instead of traditional fire rings but considering the fire danger was moderate we couldnt burn wood, only charcoal or those fire logs anyways so it ended up not mattering. Which was also a bummer. The summit trail leads right out of the back of Live Oak campground which was nice also. We did have some confusion because there seemed to be 100 different Summit Trail signs leading in every direction so we always chose the trail that went up!The hike was a butt kicker up to the top at 3,849 feet but the views and wild life were worth it. We saw two snakes, a fox, a deer, a rabbit, and plenty of lizards. The Trail through Time along the way was also cool with exhibits focusing on the mountains geological history. If you hike it, get ready for the Devils Elbow, the final push straight up to the top. On the way down about a half mile from the campsite a tick managed to find his way into my calf so beware!Since you can drive all the way to the top when we reached the summit there were tons of tourists up there which did spoil the We hiked to the top feeling a little but we found a less crowded area and ate our lunch with a spectacular view!We also hiked up to Sentinel Rock the following day which was a gnarly little 1 mile hike that had me feeling like more a billy goat than a human. You get to scurry up and over a lot of rocks until you get to the base of Sentinel Rock, which has guard rails up along the trail to the top because your literally climbing on chiseled steps in the sandstone.
I came here on a Monday in early May and it was practically empty. Be careful of cyclists climbing the mountain. On a cloudy day, the views from the peak will be obscured because the mountain is taller than the clouds. There were many wildflowers along the trail when I went.
We really enjoyed the drive up and down Mt. Diablo. Watch out for bicyclists. The view from the top is fantastic (especially on a clear day)!
Swirling drive up to the mountain. Every turn has a breath taking views, stop only at the designated place. Take some coffee, take a sip and dont forget to enjoy. Beware! Tons of cyclists on road, have patience do not pass them till it is permitted to do. Do not forget to cheer them- we did!! Its challenging to ride up on Diablo and they really appreciate. Lots of signs to guide drivers around to check out place. Also beware of rattlesnakes, we found few, keep distance and leave them in their natural habitat. Do not forget to go to rock city. Be a child again, climb all those small rock hill as no one is watching. Tip: Get lots of water, food, good shoes, hat(dress according to weather) no stores up at the visitor center. Best experience and a must place to visit with family and friends for picnic or for hike!!
A nice state park with a variety of trails and stunning views. There is amazing 360 degree views of the Bay Area from the summit of Mt. Diablo and a historical lookout tower with history of the park.
Classic spot for some the best views, hikes and camping in the East Bay. I would recommend the Rock City area if you have kids or just feel like exploring some cool wind caves. The summit offers the best views and sunsets around. The Mary Bowerman trail encircles the summit and features infographs and telescopes. The north side of the mountain is wild and features some challenging hikes as well as amazing waterfalls after rainfall.
One of my favorite places to bike. very little traffic and good solid climb.
This mountain has been considered a spiritual place for thousands of years, but on our overnight stay my group experienced something altogether different. Instead of the soothing sounds of nature, we were blasted by a loud music into the wee hours of the night (2:00AM), from from nearby neighbors just outside the park. Being trapped, as the park gate is closed overnight, with inescapably loud music, gives new meaning to Devil Mountain. Even a call to the authorities couldnt put a stop to the din. Otherwise, its a fine park for camping, hiking, cycling, and picnicking. We were in the Boundary, Stagecoach and Wildcat group campgrounds around the Junction Ranger Station, about halfway up to the summit - other campgrounds further away were probably spared the roar. I was initially concerned about the safety of camping behind locked gates, but found theres cellular phone coverage all over the park, so you can call emergency services if the need arises. Even with the locked gate, there was an occasional car on the road throughout the night - maybe a ranger patrol. Theres a nice little visitor center in an interesting depression-era stone tower, at the 3849 summit of the mountain. If youve heard that Yosemites Half Dome and the Farillon Islands can be seen from the top, dont be disappointed to find that the air quality is too poor for such good visibility on all but a few days each year. Still, theres a certain satisfaction to being at the top of any mountain peak, no matter the conditions, and youll get a grand view of the immediate surroundings, unless its completely fogged in, which is rare so far from the coast.
Great views and nice trails. Can be a bit buggy down in the valleys in the springtime, but still nice.
Top of the Mountain ride and view! The curves and views cant get much better for two-wheel riders! But there are no guardrails and its a narrow two-lane road with lots of traffic, so take it easy and enjoy.
Very good workout. A few different trails. Unobstructed view of the bay area. Very hot in the summer. Spring is probably the best time.
Great for driving and scenic route.. picnic.. hiking biking. And view of bay area.. one of the best place to visit in Northern California..
Amazing views, and some nice trails to walk. The facilities are good, with a visitor center, toilets, and grills for barbecuing.
Its a little long drive, but worth a shot for serene sunset. Has 10-15 parking spots with a couple of them reserved blue ones. Additional parking lot is 10 minutes away by walk. Can be a lot windy up there. Its a relatively less visited spot. If youre lucky youll be able to see the whole of East Bay up to San Francisco city.Park to be vacated after sunset. $10 entry fees per car. Discount of $1 if you have anyone senior with you.
Waterfalls of Mount Diablo Loop Trail (Hard) 6mile loop from donner canyon road, falls trail then back home on the back creek trail. Great hike! 4-5 small waterfalls!
It is a beautiful park and great campground. I have gone camping in the winter and summer times and never had any issues. The worst part are the bicyclists, they think they own the road and are extremely rude. I travel to state and national parks three times a month and this park has the worst bicyclists. My most recent trip in was going 5 under the speed limit, I went to pass a bike and this other bicyclist is on my side of the road and he had the nerve yelling at me.As for the campground I prefer Juniper.
Unspoiled ecological gem holding on in our East Bay.
Wonderful Sunday drive! Lots of picnic areas and some hiking trails. Beautiful views on a clear day.
A beautiful 7.2 mile hike on Deer Flat Fire Road to Eagle Peak on Mt. Diablo. This trail is loaded with lovely views and lots of inclines to get a great workout! Because of all the rain we have had recently, the creek was flowing providing soothing sounds during our hike. Once we made it to the junction, we sat at the picnic tables and enjoyed a yummy lunch with this spectacular view. Highly recommend!!
Its very hot in summer. Accordingly, its not crowded on the summit.
Recommend coming here during any season. In the winter and spring, the mountain and surrounding areas become really green and its breathtaking. If you are lucky, you can even see the Sierras in the distance on a clear day. In the summer, the hills take on a golden hue and everything looks very different. You can easily drive all the way to the top, hike the entire way, or do a combination of both. The park is also well kept and there is an informative information building at the top. There are some restrooms at the top as well.
Great hiking place if you dare! Mt Diablo!
Loved the hike. I definitly want to go back with the family.
Beautiful camp ground. The restrooms are clean and the view is breathtaking. Its first come first serve so get here early (check-in is at 2PM, but the ranger allowed folks to check in and set up as early as noon). If youre an avid camper, then youll know what to bring. If youre a novice, then make sure you prepare yourself by bringing necessary things (lawn chair, lights, charger, water (there is potable water), warm clothing (fall & winter) and binoculars.Youll get a wonderful view of the Diablo Valley treated to a wonderful sunset (clear days), so bring a camera to capture the moment. The campsites are close to each other so thats probably the downside. If you want to get away from people, this is not the place to go. There are people and people will be people (loud music, talking late into the evening etc...). I usually wear ear plugs so this was not an issue for me but can be to those that are light sleepers. I secured our food in our car so we had no problems with raccoons. There were no mosquitoes but there were gnats and an occasional bee.Im an early riser so I was up at 4:30AM. As the sun rose, you can relax (before everyone wakes up) and listen to the sound of nature! Birds chirping, breeze blowing and ebb and flow of wind howling down the canyon. We camped mid-September and it in the high 80s during the day and low 50s at night. So bring appropriate clothing.Great experience for me and my grandson so I will definite be back!
Most of the park is open during the pandemic except for the visitors centers. $10 parking fee to get in, $9 for seniors
My Diablo is truly an epic and mysterious place. Hills are steep trails are long and it is so massive. Views are incredible Diablo doesnt disappoint it is amazing!
This is really nice place to visit. Either if you are a biker or not. You can have access to My. Diablo trough two entrances either north entrance or south entrance either road turn to one single rd. It has so many beautiful views.
A gem in the Bay area. Such great views. Plus camping and serenity.
Awesome view from the top. Summer view is a bit hazy. If you wanna great view come in winter, or after a storm. Winding roads and bikers so be prepared to be slow and patient
20-30 minute drive one way from the base to the summit. Neat little educational museum at the top. You get a great 360 degree view around 10-11am of the area. On a good day you can see the bay area. Its cold so dress warm!
Great place, spectacular 360 views!
Juniper campground is right next to a gorgeous scenic lookout to view the sunset. Our group was in #22 and 18 and these sites were nice and shady. Good flat area for a tent. There are nice fairly new food boxes at each site. There is a hike to the summit visitor center thats about 45 min to an hour from the campsites depending on your pace. (Bring $ for an ice cream treat! They also take credit cards and Google/ Apple pay). The 360 View of the bay area from the top of the center is worth the trek!!! Cell service was really good throughout the park for at&t users but our friends with T Mobil had spotty coverage.
Sacred, it’s not a volcano. Do able tight two lane road all the way to the summit. At least $10.00 to drive up and love the bikers challenging their cardio fitness.
Did the Eagle Peak Loop Trail to train for our first overnighter through EBRP Wilderness, and this did not disappoint! The hike up was steep and exposed, and the hike down was a long and winding descent. But the views from the top were breathtaking, and worth every drop of sweat! Bring lots of water and sunscreen if hiking here in summertime, it gets HOT!
LOVE IT! Beautiful views and lovely little picnic spots scatter around.
We did the falls trail and it was a beautiful hike. The waterfall was dinky but the hike was still enjoyable. I can’t imagine hiking here during the summer because of the heat. Even on a cold day, we worked up a sweat. I think winter is the perfect time to hike here with all the green.
Great escape from the bustling city life. Highest peak in the Bay Area. On a clear day, you can see the Sierras from the summit.
The hike was pretty strenuous with moderately good views along the way. Some parts are particularly steep and difficult esp if you don’t have hiking shoes. But the view from the top is just amazing!!
Very nice place for trail work and bicycle riding. You need to watch out for many curvy roads.
Fun place for hiking. You dont need to be pro hiker to complete the summit trail. But, you need to know the basics. You also have option of driving right to the summit, not for me though
Great time to see snow in February
Great park. it made a bit of a come back since the previous fore
Love it every time I come to My. Diablo. Love the sun set view from here.
Nice staff they gave me first aid and were very sweet
Surreal sacred splendor from a distinctly devilish sierra.
Beautiful ride to the summit. Drive slow for bicycles, hiker,..etc. on this trip we visited the visitors center at the summit. Then went for a quick hike on the Mary Bowerman trail
The ~13 mile summit loop was a bit more than my group wanted to handle on a Sunday so we did the waterfall loop instead. Late-winter is a great time to do this hike because the temperature is low (but not too low) so you won’t fry and the waterfalls are likely to be active from recent rains. It is quite muddy at the beginning/end of the loop so plan accordingly. One person in our group found a tick on themselves at the end of the hike, so check yourself accordingly. Enjoy!
One of the best peak in the entire Bay area . You can almost drive to the peak and if you want to hike, its quite challenging and certainly a good hike. Beautiful views and close to freeway.
Super, there a lot of social distance, there are bathrooms and they are by the way very clean and very well painted, everything green trees, bushes, 1 or 2 beautiful birds, grills, benches.
Amazing 360° views of the bay area & the sierras. Beautiful historic visitor center/museum. Perfect for selfies.
Spectacular views! Amazing rolling green hills here in April. Balmy temperatures and excellent hiking weather make this park nukber one Must for the area. You will not be disappointed.
First visit to this side of Mt. Diablo. We went for a tarantula hike sponsored by MDIA. I highly recommend this! Make reservations, as these hikes fill up. It was a great learning experience and we got to see spiders and scorpions. So cool! We only did a short hike, but the terrain on this side seems much flatter than the western side of the park. Apparently the spiders actually prefer the western side, so we will have to try an evening hike on that side to compare. Great park and great hike!
What a great place to see the Sacramento Valley all the way to the Bay!
Beautiful views, plenty of trails, parking, campsites, and picnic tables. Visitor center on the very summit can be driven to if you dont feel like hiking. $10 day use is worth it, highly recommended
Great views on the drive up and some fun applies for a picnic along the way
Beautiful state park the museum at the top is pretty incredible. Wonderful for trails and picnics. No dogs allowed so make sure you leave your furry friends at home. Pay no attention to the first picture.
Great parc with great amenities. We did the summit road from Rock City, there was water and toilets every two miles on the way up. There is not too much shade so important to have sun cream and hat for summer time. All the trails were clearly marked.
Always a beautiful but tough place to hike. Its especially nice during winter and spring months when everything is green.
The most AMAZING place I have ever seen. Beautiful does not adaquetly describe this state park. Perfect for hiking, strolling, biking and camping. I learned some California history too. A must see! If you bike it please be prepared for a long, slow climb. Please see Rock City following your visit here. Its at the bottom of Mount Diablo!
Nice place for hike and picnic. But could be hot during the summer because almost holes are in the open. So I recommend carrying enough water.
Great trail system with good markings and trails in good shape even with some recent rain.
Great place for a casual hike! In summer the hiking can be a little brutal. Take lots of water. I would suggest parking toward the base and hiking to the summit. Driving to the summit can be a little nerve wracking as its a very popular biking route.
Always great trails in amy direction!
Great place to visit and hike. Cycling there is fun.
Mt. Diablo has something for everyone. Road cyclists will get a challenging climb. Mountain bikers wont find much true single track but there are plenty of trails. Hikers, cyclists, and equestrians will be rewarded with amazing scenic vistas. There is ample rustic camping. The visitors center at the summit is a great place to visit with a family.
Awesome views.. worth visiting
Great hike but DOWNLOAD THE INTERACTIVE MAP!! The trails are not clearly marked and it is easy to get lost. We went on a day that was over 100 degrees and there were very few other hikers and no one to ask directions. The train is very steep depending on which way you go and Rocky and can be slippery or the gravel is at. It is definitely moderate or advanced and I would suggest a walking stick. In hot weather bring plenty to drink as well as a cell phone for the interactive map and a charger. The hike takes roughly two and a half hours. It is beautiful and there are waterfalls and small creeks throughout depending on what time of year you go.Choose another hike if you are a beginner! When we were there they had to have a Helo and two fire trucks go up to rescue someone and there were four fire trucks waiting at the entrance along with an ambulance. As a side note, this is not covered by your insurance and you will get the bill.
Beautiful day, beautiful park. We met a young rattler on our walk. No problems... he went his way, we went ours.
Its infested with cyclists going 2-5 mph. Theres no way you can enjoy a ride up there without having to stop and pass someone every 30 seconds.
Hiking at this state park was great here are some pictures of my journey Saturday and it was a lot of hiking. 4 hours up and 5 hours down.
