Glad to have stopped and toured the Kansas Capitol building and its surrounding. Contactless temperature scanning and disinfectant dispensers provided at the entrance as part of COVID precautions. There is also an easily accessible, free 2-hours basement carpark provided for visitors at the building.
The Kansas State Capitol Building is a beautiful architectural site to see and tour anytime of the year. The rich history of the state is showcased very well throughout the grounds and building as well as the visitor center and museum.
We have been in 46 capitol buildings now and the tours here in Topeka could be the most comprehensive. First we went on the dome tour all the way up to the top of the cupola. Being terrified of heights, it was scary for me, but worth it. The last part of the stairs is 75 feet above the inner dome to a spiral stair case. Not very easy for someone with a height phobia. The views from the top were awesome though. At the bottom you can join a historic tour that takes you all over and gives tons of information about the building. It was the first tour we have been in that takes you to both chambers, the governors office, the Supreme Court and the library. The building has an original Otis Pullman elevator with an operator. This building has tons of history, free parking underneath it, lots of marble, statues and painting. A great place to learn some history and see the government in action.
We went on a Saturday so there were few visitors, which was great. We took the Historical tour, which I recommend. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared many facts and anecdotes which made our visit exponentially more interesting than if we just wandered around. It was basically a private your. Two of our friends joined my husband and me for the tour and there was only one additional couple in our group.I buried the lead because the Capitol is quite beautiful. The renovation was done very well and the visitor center is a wonderful addition. We parked in the underground garage, and again since it was Saturday it wasnt crowded. My husband and his friend took the tour to the top of the dome. They enjoyed it. I am glad we visited the Capitol building. If you are a Kansan and havent been, I recommend adding it to your to-do list.
Why have copied the Swedish region of Ångermanland’s anthem and made it in to your own song (home on the range). This is not acceptable!!!!!!!
A truly amazing experience! I also did the Dome tour which was just spectacular. Warning... A lot of stairs! But getting to the top is so worth it!
Definitely the most amazing capital I have seen to date. And Im up to 31states. Beautiful building with huge stone foundation blocks. Also a very rich history if you have the time to spend all day reading it. You can also climb to the top of the dome. Climb early though, it gets a little warm in the summer up top.
Absolutely beautiful building thats almost entirely accessible at all times. Theres a wonderful new visitors center with lots of displayed history that you can walk through before entering the main atrium. You can wander to all the buildings floors and get awesome views from up near the dome to the floor looking up. As a Kansans its a great place to visit and see where everything happens.
Very nice building nice staff . ground doo floor is great museum.very cool building.
Tours on the hour, dome tours every xx:15. Amazing State Capitol that took 37 years to be finished. Worth a visit and make sure you go up into the dome. Even allows you to walk around outside at about 290ft high.
For someone who doesnt get very excited about historical things, I was very impressed with the tour of the Capitol Building. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and well articulated. I really liked the fact that during restoration, they elected to leave the graffiti in the tower, which had been added over the years. Not trying to cover up the past, but allowing it to provide additional character, to an already impressive venue.
Have been to the Capitol building for many things
Tours are free and operate every 2 hours. Take a tour of the lower floors or take a tour up to the top of the dome. The dome tour is not climate controlled, so it gets hot climbing all 296 steps to the top.
Love to run them stairs. Nice place to walk.
Walk to the top with a tour guide. Seven tour times available M-F and six on Saturday. Its a little exercise but very doable. You will be happy if you do it.
I came here with my family to walk up the dome. It was free, which is always great. The tour guide we had did a great job of letting us explore and sharing history. The fire from the top was well worth it. If youre afraid of heights, this will challenge you, but Im very glad I did it!
Great tour guides. Rich history for current and future generations. Go to the dome if you can.
The Kansas Statehouse is one of the greatest in the nation. As a Kansan, I swell with pride when visiting. I love the history of John Brown and it is fun to see the great mural, Tragic Prelude, by John Steuart Curry. There are exhibits galore demonstrating the rich history of Kansas. This is a definite dont miss. To the Stars with Difficulty.
Great place to spend an afternoon in any season. Have time to plan ahead, call and set up a guided dome tour. Clean facility and well-organized exhibits. Knowledgeable and helpful personnel. Gift and curios. Free to the public. *Conference rooms can be reserved for a variety of social events.*
It was an aesthetically built building. The guided tour was extremely informative and detailed. I would highly recommend a visit of this place.
Free learning experience. Cool to go up into the dome. Tours are your best bet to get the most out of your visit.
I have visited 43 state capitols and the national one in DC. Recognizing it had been years since I had actually toured our home capitol in Topeka, my husband and I went today. In all honesty, I have to say that the KS capitol building is one of, if not the, nicest in the country. I have always thought it was attractive, but the renovations/restorations of a few years ago, regaining original colors and patterns, while adding more light, have made it absolutely beautiful. The museum area in the basement is also really well done and a big surprise. The best thing, however, is being able to go clear to the top of the dome and out on the encircling balcony as a guided tour. That is unique in our capitol experiences and the tour information was entertaining and informative. All of the staff members were pleasant and helpful. I highly, highly recommend visiting.
After a 15-year renovation costing $320 million (100 times the original cost), the Kansas State Capitol Building is an architectural and historical gem. I would highly recommend taking the 296 steps to the top of the Dome...amazing views and interesting perspective. The tour was free and hosted by a kind and informed guide. This building is a treasure!
Had the opportunity to visit when I was a senior in high school. I knew I would come back some day. Manifestation at its finest when I earned the opportunity to work on Capitol Hill as an adult. Tour guides are excellent. Such a great way to learn more about our nation. A must do when in DC!
We stopped here thinking we would only be here 30 minutes or so but there is so much more to see. Check out the guided tours and if you are brave enough there is a dome tour where you can go to the top of the dome and go outside. Its a beautiful and historic place.
I had a great time on the dome tour! The building was beautiful and the heights were not for the faint-of-heart. Our tour guide, Carl, was full of knowledge and fun facts! I will definitely come back and take the historic tour in the future!
Outstanding design and decor inside of the Capital building
5/22/20 - not open to visitors. It would be nice if one of many (still paid) public employees would update their google maps listing to show it as CLOSED.
I haven’t been there yet but I plan to soon. Just wondering why the Nebraska State Capitol photo doing on this website.
It is the capitol. Fun.
Great home atmosphere love my Topeka Kansas ️️

Fantastic! We love to walk around, inside and out, to take pictures. The Dome tour and History tour are both great.
A free visit with plently of old paintings and old kansas facts. its a very great place to roam around and learn kansas history. there are hourly tours to the very top of the dome and the tour guides are very nice and will answer any questions. hours of intertainment in that building and a great way to spend a few hours.
Capital FunI’m embarrassed to say that until recently, I had never stepped foot in the Kansas State Capitol. For six months I worked fifteen minutes away from it and always promised myself that I would and never did. But finally, during this year of my big birthday travel, I made it a priority.I took two family members, my ten-year-old grandson and his sister on this day trip full of history. This restored building is visually appealing from the moment you walk into the spacious basement level that consists of an information desk, gift shop and exhibits. Look down and notice the 105 counties in Kansas depicted in the stone lobby floor. The free, guided tour, starts in the well-lit and beautiful museum styled basement with exposed 10,000 pound limestone blocks, hosts wonderful pictures and mementos of each historical period. On the first floor you can ride in the 1923 cage elevator up to the fifth floor. Rotunda murals, a 256-glass paneled interior dome and 900-pound replicated chandelier can be viewed from the first floor. The Governor and Secretary of State ceremonial offices are located on the second floor. The third floor offers historical learning regarding the House of Representatives. Take a moment to look at the glass floor, polished brass sunflowers and white oak wainscoting that was hand-carved in the state library. The children had a chance to learn the protocols of the Senate and the Old Supreme Court. The insightful Brown v Board of Education mural located in the south wing, depicts the 1954 landmark case of desegregation with its tie to Topeka. Because of the intense heat that day, we were unable to climb the 296 stairs to the top of the dome. This is just a sample of some of the things we experienced during our historical tour. Surprisingly the children could answer questions posed to them when I quizzed them on some key facts learned.Overall: The State Capital visit is worth a day trip. My only complaint is that the tour guide didn’t ask who was present for the tour. He took a white family with him and began the tour as my family, who arrived early for the event, were dismissed. When we caught up with him, he looked surprised that we would want to do such a thing.
This was our 30th state capitol. It has a great public Green space, easy to find the visitors entrance. Parking was also very easy compared to most capitols. Kansas should be very proud of this building.
I liked Kansas state capitol building the structure was amazing. There were few memorials down at the park which had a little history about the state and Kansa tribe
The man at the desk was wonderfully helpful.
The best time ever.. Loved the tour guide.
Make the climb to the top, its amazing! There is a guided tour that takes you above the inner dome, & outside to a 360 degree view from the top of the dome. It was hot up there, no A/C, not for anyone who has a fear of heights, but well worth the climb
Beautiful place to visit, great gifts at the Capitol gift shop. Dont buy the same old presents this year! Historical books, original jewelry, beautiful artwork, pottery and other handmade items. Something for everyone!
Beautiful building and typical architecture for Kansas. Not open in the weekend.
Stately building, very important to our great state of Kansas. Worth exploring if Kansas is your home state. Dome is quite tall and can be seem from underneath (inside of the building). My recall is that this was a free attraction to tour. Mural of John Brown inside leaves a lasting impression. Enjoyed my time here and intend to return.
It had beautiful art and if full of history. My personal favorite thing was the library. It was stunning and the second floor is made of glass, how awesome is that. The staff is very knowledgeable in the library and the tours of the capital itself. I have so many more I want to add, but I dont want to ruin your fun. Will definitely go again.
Theres a tour every half an hour to go to the very top of the dome. Do it!! Absolutely worth it, but a lot of stairs to climb
Beautiful capitol building. Great place to visit with kids or adults.
Recently took the Statehouse Tour with Larry as my tour guide. He was OUTSTANDING and the tour was TREMENDOUS. I would highly recommend the tour, especially the dome portion of the tour. THANK YOU Larry!
Stunning architecture and interesting historical artwork. Beautifully restored building!
Nice little spot to have lunch on a sunny day.
A great walk through halls full of history. The ground floor plus 5 upper floor are open to the public. Each level has different items, paintings, statues, etc from Kansas history. The upper dome is only accessible with three guided tours. There is an old cage elevator for floors 1 through 5 that is still I operation.
It was so beautiful and clean. The governors secretary was so hospitable while we waited to see the governor.
Had a fantastic singing your guide this time. Always learn something new. Great views from the top too!
Nice tour of the capitol. Always great to hear about the history and lore of a States beginning s.
Very clean, informative, staff were friendly and they all allow you to walk about without a chaperone.
Visited early morning, looks were stunning
Got there when they opened on the Memorial day weekend. Parking was easy on the weekend and the tour started promptly after everyone got in. The first tour is listed at the same time that the doors open and the staff are aware of that fact and give people a chance to get in before starting. The tour takes you through most of the building and gives you the history of the building and of how the Kansas state political system operates. Our tour guide was great and did an excellent job at describing everything. The Capitol was restored several years ago and is beautiful and going on the weekend allows you to see it without the interruptions of daily activities there.
The building is beautiful and we enjoyed wandering through the capitol, seeing the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court and the state library.
Had such a great time here! You can walk around at you leisure and even look at books in the library. The gift shop had a nice selection.
Interesting place with marvlous views on kind of soviet architecture of the town. the ascending to top of the capitol is a must.
Beautiful building and an awesome tour.
304 feet to the top...17 feet higher than the capitol building in DC.
Went to the domestic violence awareness rally
Cant wait to go back...hopefully when they are in session. We (my mom, my 12 yr old, 15 yr old and myself) all enjoyed visit the State Capital very much. Stayed the entire afternoon and actually had to rush the last 2 floors to get done before they closed. It is a beautiful building!
This is fantastic! The tour to the dome is quite the adventure and the history is very interesting!
We enjoyed our tour. Our guide seemed a bit overwhelmed and we had a fairly group just 15 kids with 4 adults.
This a good place to take the hold family.
Really well done refurb. Gorgeous chandeliers and interesting interior design. Easy to find free parking in underground garage and free for 2 hours. Definitely worth looking around.
Very nice capital, well taken care of and very clean
Do the done tour. Well worth the 296steps!
At Black Label Transportation, we love that we can partner to showcase what is routinely recognized and showcased as one of the most beautiful State Capitol buildings in our nation. You must definitely see and tour to truly appreciate this over-the-top structure.
I am trying to get my tax returns and my federal returns are fairly high, but the state of Kansas only wants to give me $8 back even after i paid a lot more.
Really high up at the top (I did not make it but my brothers did) I really love the setup and everything about it. It was amazing
Tour was very informative. Tour guide was amazing and answered all of our questions!
I’ve been to visit a few Capitals so far and this has to be my favorite trip. Finding parking was easy, Friendly staff, very informative and the steps to the top was a great experience.
Free learned a lot. Tighter hallways in places but given the age makes sense. Was a pleasant day trip destination all in all
Stoic. Cold. They looked at me crazy. This state attraction is set inside the capital with multiple photos of famous ks historical moments. It has an antigun policy and a gift shop which features an array of doodads and iconic memorabilia of the state. I went once and all I found was a security team and a woman in a wheel chair, a woman I felt inclined to assist. But altogether, the building was notably empty.
Beautiful state capital. Definitely worth going in and walking around
A beautiful building.
Phenomenal got to see and meet some people and we got some work done with a bill
The Capitol building is beautiful. Practically empty today. You can visit the courtroom where Brown v Board of Education was heard. The building was spotless. The grounds are attractive and well maintained.
Great place with loads of great displays! Staff is super friendly and engaging. Took my 7yo and he wasnt bored for a minute.
Got vertigo going to the top. Lots of cool history.
Do the dome tour if youre a lover of heights! Great views from the balcony. Fun and engaging new visitors center and gift shop since our last visit.
Wonderful time looking back at Kansas Historic past topped off by a almost 300 step climb to the top of the dome. Now if youre a little scared of heights theres a time or two this might be a little intimidating but I made it and the view at the top is pretty amazing.
An absolutely beautiful building. The visitor center is a wonderful addition with some really fantastic artifacts and displays that are worth an hour of your time alone. We visited the governors office and the time the staff took to show us around was inspiring. Its a shame that such a dysfunctional government is housed in this gorgeous building.
The dome tour is a must!!! 296 steps to the top, so you gotta be in at least as good of shape as me lol. Tour guide was super cool and even the state deputies made me laugh and were nice, Thanks Kansas. And to think I thought you were just an old 70s band.
A beauty. Made it almost to top, before I chickened on last segment. Go, and see what I speak of.
Beautifully restored. Great way to spend an afternoon with the kids that is fun and educational.
Beautiful inside. My friend met the governor. Held onto his pockets just in case. Lol!
Beautiful art, friendly staff, amazing architecture
Kansas is the only state that allows visitors to climb up and on top of the state building dome. This is not a tour for those afraid of heights. The latter portion of the tour takes you up hanging ladders and a spiral staircase at the very top of the dome interior. But the views from the outdoor terrace just below the statue are great. The tour is free and departs from the fifth floor by the caged elevator (easy to find).
Will defiantly go back and take the tour during the week. Inside the building is beautiful with all the murals.
Worth visiting even if just to see the huge painting of John Brown.TIFA 2003
If you want a great experience in Topeka, go see your beautiful State Capital Building. And when there make sure you visit the State Library of Kansas on the 3rd floor.
Beautifully restored. Professional, friendly staff. Worth a looksee.
