My daughter and I bored from the COVID-19 so we decided to just go for a drive and ran into this super cool nostalgic movie theater! We didnt get to go in due to COVID-19. Which is understandable but I have been on Mill Ave a hundred times and never noticed this place. When things open back up, my daughter and I will definitely watch a movie there.
With my student ID, I only paid $9!! This is quite the underrated--and not commonly picked--outing. If you enjoy more thought-provoking, artistic, or unique entertainment--something different from your average action film. If youre a Netflix n Chill type. You might actually get a kick out of this cinema, instead of the bigger crowded ones. It has everything youd still want: popcorn, drinks, comfy seats, etc. Granted, youre more likely to see a film not everyone is talking about, or less famous talent, but its no less quality!! Find something that seems your flavor, and it wont disappoint.
I love this cozy little theater on Mill Ave. I have seen so many great films there that no one else is playing. Step outside the box and give it a try!
Clean and intimate. The staff were friendly. Parking is paid and not the best. I got lucky. Turned into the small and narrow lot, which was full, and by the time I turned around, a spot had opened up.
Place still does what it does best, showcase upcoming indie and anime movies in a very limited manner, glad to have caught the movies I have seen here, otherwise wouldnt have been on the big screen
I expected old school valley art and what a nice surprise. Nicely remodeled to include stadium seating. Save the landmarks!
One of my favorite movie theaters. I’ve been coming here for years and it’s really an institution in Tempe. You must check it out.
Very cute vintage style theatre! There’s only one viewing room, but the seats are comfy and it’s well maintained. Ticket prices are definitely affordable, and they have lots of indie movies here which is great!
My Favorite times are 6:20 pm or 6:50 pm quick service n good workers wen I Go with My Family !!
This is such a cool movie theater! This is one of the original Harkins and it only has one screening room. The interior looks dated and the exterior goes for that nostalgic feel, they do it well and its really amazing! They do play Indy movies so dont expect to see the common top box movies here. Check their website for time and details!
The theater is a Valley treasure. It is clean and in good shape, although it does not have reclining seats. It regularly shows independent films you cant see anywhere else in AZ. I like the Harkins Theaters chain, the refillable cups, and reserved seating at many of the theaters. The Valley Art is a special place, thanks to Dan Harkins.
Such a cute indie movie theatre. They play movies you normally dont see and sometimes old movies. I came here to see Labyrinth and it was amazing!
Time machine! Built in 1940, this first-ever Harkins still looks and feels like it must have back in the day. Plus, they show cool indie films and stuff.
Lovely little theater from the outside but surprised by its size once you get in
Really cool place to catch a movie. There is only one screen due to how old the theatre is, so the daily movie selection is pretty small. I personally go here to see Anime films, but thats about the only reason why I would choose this Harkins. Some smells from restaurants located next door can leak into the theatre, which I dont find to be a terrible thing, but something to note.
Very nice theater. Great sound and comfortable seats
Great historical preservation! Old classic single theatre remodeled to modern standards with stadium seating, crisp digital projection and excellent sound.
This theatre is a gem, from the old school décor to the upgraded sound, picture and seating. The two employees that man the tickets and concisions are very helpful and theyll even give you great movie conversation. In my opinion, Valley Art theatre is the very best place to see an independent movie...anywhere in the valley.
A bit small and not a loud theatre but its good for its price
The 2 best things about this theater are: (1) theres never a line to get in or at the concession counter; and (2) they show lots of freebie films through ASU. You love freebies, dont you?!
Bring back Rocky Horror
Great place I wish they would bring back Rocky Horror!
The seating is not crowded. Nice sound system. Food, popcorn, drinks are very pricey. Id suggest smuggling you own goodies. Large popcorn and 1 large drink, $13.74........
I love it. So much fun.
Had some complications but the management for this place is amazing and the inside of this place is very beautiful I appreciate the Managements kindness and communication on our situation he was very kind. Thank you and we hope everyone has a good year and great movie seeing.
Vaxxed the movie was played at this theater. This was an eye opening movie which is a must see for parents that want to make educated decisions on vaccines. Thank you for opting to screen this thought provoking masterpiece!
I walked by here and saw a poster about some gay guy. Mill Ave is lit tho.
The theater itself is larger than expected with plenty of seats. Clean theater. Staff is friendly and helpful. You can get parking validated if you park in the 5th St Garage by the Marriott Hotel near 5th and Forest, which is a major plus.
Small theater but it brings back movie theater style and less mainstream movies. Food options in the area are excellent as well
Great theater for independent cinema
Great service. Small but nice. Old school feel.
Old fashioned theatre. Well maintained!!
Went to see From Up On Poppy Hill in 2013, it was a lovely experience. Very cozy and nice interior.
Such a fun way too see a movie! Next to tons of bars and restaurants, its an experience to visit a small, vintage theater
The building is clean and well-kept. The staff is courteous. Those two point dont require further explanation. But whats more, the management is courageous. This point I will further explain. They were one of a handful of theaters to initially agree to screen The Interview, in the midst of all the North Korean bombast and the Sony hack and all the rest. And now a year later I see that theyre screening Don Verdean, a movie that satirizes Biblical literalists. Theyre more likely to retaliate than North Koreans. Most media businesses, which only exist due to the 1st Amendment, fold like cheap tents at the first sign of controversy. Not so this place. Im voting for them with my wallet every chance I get.
The service was exceptional, the theater was big & clean, they were quick to address any disturbances while the movie was playing & they dealt with it quietly. They also have a wide variety of movies, I will be recommending this theater to all my friends & be sure to visit more often
I love this theater, as far as I know, its one of a kind. Playing old favorites, animes and all sorts of niche indie etc films
At the moment one of only 3 places on earth with enough backbone to show The Interview. Well done Harkins!
Best small theater I love this place. But watch out for parking though its super busy most days in this area.
Im kind of a dork for the historical aspect of this theater since apparently this is the original harkins movie theater wich is cool. Wait was a bit slow since you have to get food and print tickets all in the same line, but still a good theater.
I love all the different types of events they do here.
Best place in Phoenix to see foreign movies. Akira, mononoke, metropolis nausicaa to name a few.
Great evening in Tempe.
TEMPE, YOU ARE HURTING BUSINESS AND AGGRAVATING CONSUMERS WITH SUCH OUT OF CONTROL PARKING REGULATIONS ISSUING AS MANY TICKETS AS POSSIBLE DRIVING AWAY COMMERCE.LAST TIME I GO TO TEMPE AND SPEND ANY OF MY MONEY.
Best movies selection. Anime and more
