Very cool place! First visit here and it was a great time. I HIGHLY recommend The Sponge Diver Supply Store. These people are the FRIENDLIEST on the entire strip. Actually took time to explain all of the different types of sponges and even gave us a little tutorial by dipping them in water and explaining the makeup of the sponges. DEFINITELY going back to that shop. All in all...Great history and great little town....Did I mention all of the Greek food and bakeries.
Living near the Sponge Docks back in the 1980s was great. How I miss the 20 minute drive each weekend. Now I have to make this is my destination every time I visit Florida. My vacation would not be complete unless I visit the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. So much to see and do here. Love the shopping, the restaurants, the Aquarium and dolphin/sunset cruises. It is the best place to be if you cant go to Greece. People are incredibly welcoming here and I love the atmosphere this area has. I will be back again and again.
The sponge docks are great and check out the shops along the way and the Greek restaurants are so good especially Hellas! Make sure you take the dolphin cruise boat tour its really fun!
So happy that this area has maintained its character and charm, even after so many years. Was a pleasant surprise to still hear Greek being spoken on streets. Come when you have time, so you can browse at your leisure. Theres lots to see and do, and its all low-key. Just dont come too late cause a lot of places close early.
Beautiful place. I like to arrive early to walk the sidewalks and go door to door treasure hunting.. One of a kind souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, decor. The list is endless. And the restaurants, ice cream shops, bakeries and cafes have something for everyones tastes.Deep sea fishing trips, dolphin watching cruises and sponge diving tours are available for memorable day outings. Or sit on a bench and look at the sparkling water and see the boats come and go, watch as they unload their catch of the day.I really enjoyed the Aquarium, a nice cave like place to escape the heat and see Floridas fish and wildlife up close.Touch a few in the touch tank or during the scheduled educational shows, even feed a few in the shark tank!A stamp allows you to come back at any point in the day, making it a great value.
This place is very picturesque. The boats in the waterway, and all the little shops. Hellas bakery in the center is the jewel on top!
A historic area with a primary Greek population. I have been coming here for over 40 years. When I was a child, my parents came there with out of town visitors. Pappas Restaurant was an area favorite for over 100 miles. Go on the sponge diving tours in class bottom boats. Dolphin cruises. Delicious restaurants with fantastic Greek food and much more. Take photos with real divers and authentic boats. Shopping for all local souvenirs. I bring many people here. Parking is an issue in high peak times. Enjoy!!!
Interesting place to visit. Lots of shops and authentic Greek food. Hellas Bakery is the best! Seeing the sponge boats and the history is very cool.
Great place to walk around. Lots of boutiques and eateries and boat tours available.
Love this place. Its a nice little Greek fishing village with some excellent restaurants.
Beautiful place to visit with a lot of tiny shops. The items in the shop are not overpriced either, so definitely check it out if youre looking for souvenirs. I love the view too. It is a clean great place to explore even if you live near the area. As you go down, youll see parking spots that are around $5 for the whole day. I recommend parking there than the $10 lot at the beginning of the main strip. Some restaurants may have parking for free if you eat there, but you may want to call them and double check!
Enjoyed strolling along the river soaking up the history. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Be sure to take one of the tour boat excursions.
Its a fun place to go with family and relax. Always good food to be had at 1 place or another. Capt Jacks across the bridge is the BEST!
Ive been here many times. Whats the reason I keep coming back by myself or with family and friends, love it here. The sponge boat tours are the best and so educational. Dont miss this place.
My kids and I love this classic American spot. A real favorite. The Greek food is great and there are lots of old style little shops and a nice area for walking. Try the sponge dive boat to see a classic sponge diver go get sponges underwater. A great family or date place.
So yes I like it here, but the street sales are a bit much. Youll be shouted at every 100 feet or so. Whats funny is we do go for the dolphin cruise out to Anclote island which is 90% of what they are trying to sell, its relentless. It is a cool town but be prepared...
Came for the gyro, food was good but not great, service was mediocre. The place is small and cozy. If you eat their you can park for free. Probably the best place in town for gyros.
We went to the Seafood Festival and had a great time. Tarpon Springs is just a great place to visit, buy things, and enjoy good food. I definitely like to go 3 or 4 times a year...
Went there for the Hippiefest!!! What a great time. The street was blocked off so you could walk freely on the sidewalks or street. They had all kinds of food vendors and beer tents!!! I had a fresh squeezed lemonade; it was so refreshing because it was about 105° with the heat index!!!I basically went to see a band called Umbra Luna who played right in the middle of the afternoon!!! What a treat that was; 3 piece band that was all instrumental. Each musician was excellent especially their guitar player, Joe Sanders!!!They also had a VW car show going on at the same time.
A blast! Reminded me of Key West a bit but definitely with its own flare and personality. The sponges sold here are a novelty and unique to the area. Not cheap but very unique and unusual. You can find good deals, which we did! Plenty of places to eat and plenty of shopping and sight seeing here! Be prepared to spend a day or two here! Loved it!!!
Cool story behind the story of the sponge docks from the origins of the sponges and the start from the Greeks. Tarpon Springs Fl has the largest Greek population in North America.
The docks are an interesting spot to visit for a few hours. There was an aquarium, a variety of shops, many boat tours, along with great options for both Greek fare and seafood. It is definitely a bit of a tourist trap, but its interesting to learning more about the areas history and a pleasant way to take in the waterfront. Be patient, as parking spots are limited and shop prices vary greatly.
Fantastic amount of charming fun! This narrow lane of shops has so many neat places and you can go on a dolphin cruise so you can rest after all that shopping cardio! Were local but it never gets old going there. Plan on three or four hours eating, shopping and dont forget the dolphin cruise!
Nice place for a walk. Lots of places to eat, Greek cuisine is wonderful. Interesting story behind these sponges
This place was so neat! Tarpon Springs is the sponge capitol of the world, and also has an incredible Greek culture!
Clean and welcoming. Parking was 5 dollars all day on a Wednesday. Ate at Hellas and shopped amongst all the shops. Great day trip.
Great place to spend a different time. Ice cream !Delicious!!!
A very interesting and quaint area to visit. Many little shops to visit and able to see many fishing boats and wildlife.
Lots of fun shops, great dolphin cruise options, we love to come here when we are in the area!
Interesting place to visit and there are unique Items for sale that one rarely finds elsewhere. The Restaurant Rusty Belly is located here and is an excellent place to eat. Some of the shops just off the main strip are owned and run by locals that are related to families that migrate to America in the late 1800s to early 1900s to start the sponge business here in the United States. They are very Interesting to visit with for a quick history lesson on the sponge docks.
I enjoyed visiting the area...Will be returning soon...more shopping & eating
It is a very nice town where you get to learn a lot about sea sponges. There are tons of shops. The bakeries are amazing. The only downfall is a lot of the clothing and touristy stores sell a lot of the same things and the clothing store seems slightly overpriced. I do think it is well worth it to visit the Sponge Docks and learn about sea sponges and eat some really good Greek food at the Greek restaurants and have some amazing Greek desserts from the bakery.
Tarpon Springs is my second favorite place in Florida. Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grille there is fabulous. Hellas Restaurant is great. Two Georges fishing boat is so fun. The shops and seeing all the sponges is relaxing. A great place for everyone.
This was the first visit to Tarpon Springs in many years. There are lots of shops, restaurants, boat rides and other activities available. There are lots of benches along the way for a rest or also several places to sit and have a beverage of your choice. The prices seem to be very reasonable. We spent a couple of hours or more just enjoying the scenery and people. It was a Thursday and there were a good many people. Lots of food choices from seafood to greek bakeries.
Very interesting history. Great little shops. Had a fantastic lunch at Hellas.
The Sponge Docks are awesome. Several cruises throughout the day. Local shops. Old history. Great food. I highly recommend this place I go often and Im a local.
Awesome historical place to visit with kids. Beautiful Greek community hidden in FL! A must to visit
If you get to this area go to the sponge Docks. So much to do. Spend two day exploring here. Great shops and food. Boat tour was fun. The island we stopped at has tons of shells. Beautiful location. Great specially wines.
Great eateries with great cuisine. A few very nice gift shops, but too many of the same-same shops.
Tarpin Springs is definitely historic! My first experience on the sponge divers boat was decades ago, more recently a couple of years ago. I highly recommend that trip and shopping for a souvenir sponge near the docks. This year we wandered through the market place and did a bit of shopping before having a wonderful sampler platter at Yiannis. Good food, excellent service despite a crowd. We also sampled a couple of desserts from the bakery across the street. Baklava was marvelous!
I love walking here, getting lunch, shopping, site seeing, and people watching. The Greek food is excellent. Hellas is an awesome place to eat. I also love the natural sponges, and the goats milk soaps you can buy here. Some of the stores have really great deals on a variety of items.
Been coming here on and off since I was a kid. Always a great stop for tourists.
My family and I love this place!! So many shops and restaurants to explore. We live close by so we are always popping in. Seems like we find something new each time. I love Cal the violinist. So happy to see his health improving. Definitely a fun place.
Ahh the wonderful sponges that give man creativity beyond the immagination
The bakery is the absolute best!! Hellas! A lot of cute shops and fun to watch the boats come in.
Great atmosphere! Good Greek food. Lots of sponges and other crafts. Best fudge I have ever tasted at a small shop on the main drag
Very nice and distinctive place. I did notknow before about these sponges at all, while here they are sold behind every single door.
Okay let me tell you, something about sponges. I dont know what it is, but I am in love with them. I have them all over, and Tarpon Springs is the place to go if you have an obsession with sponges like I do. That can only be corrected if you use mood-altering medications! With that being said I had a wonderful experience with the crew that was Manning the cruise that I was on. We did not see any Dolphins, but I mean come on its kind of hard to tell flipper to come on over if he doesnt want to. We did manage to pick up a few shells. But nothing quite as large as you would see in the gift shops! But overall we had a wonderful time, and Tarpon Springs let me tell you its a place of magic! If you have a chance to visit, you most assuredly should. Thanks for listening, or reading. Take care.
Interesting sites, free movies about the sponge trade, good place for souvenirs.
Very cool little downtown. Good restaurants a great way to spend an afternoon
So much fun! Lots of authentic Greek eating and some awesome stores to shop in! Fun for the whole family!
Was very informative, lots of shops, boat rides, Greek restaurants and live music.
Best place in Florida to go get Greek food! Beautiful views of the river and the sponge boats. Great place for Greek families to go and enjoy a little taste of Greece. If you want a cigar go there if you want to buy a loofah go there if you want to buy a nice hat or some really cool plants or some ocean shells this is definitely the place to go shopping. The food at the restaurants, all the restaurants is amazing and they bakeries serve the best desserts around!
A quaint town with a lot of history. The place has a Greek history. Sometime around 1905 time period some 500 or so experienced divers from Greece found their way here to dive for sponges.
The area is really cool, tourist area! Fun little shops and Greek food! Definitely worth the time to visit!
I love everything about Tarpon Springs. This was the most beautiful cities in the state of Florida. Its worth an entire day or two. People are friendly the food is amazing and theres so much to do here I cant say enough about how much I love this city
Great place to visit! Lots of unique shops to browse through. They have a little bit of everything for everyone. Highly recommend!
We took a boat tour, where you look for dolphins or any wild life. They also take you to a small island to sea shell hunt. My daughter, her husband, 4 year old & 5 month old sons, my 25 yr old son & myself went. Captain Mike was very professional. His mate, was very funny. Together fabulous tour guides & very informative. Not only in regards to the area and all of the living but also the history of the area & things to do together as a family. Saved us money & time. The weather was rainy which made spotting dolphins hard. Overall would recommend.
The dockside town is lovely but very touristy.
Everyone that comes down to visit loves this location, almost always find the souvenirs they were looking for within a couple of quaint blocks, very walkable and tourist friendly. A bit more for the older crowd that would avoid the busyness of Clear Water and south, HUGH Greek presents, many Greek restaurants.
Great historic place you learn something new every time you visit.... The shops are cool but I like visiting with the locals
Great little shops. Amazing food.
What a great place to spend the day! Great shopping and dining. Cruises to see dolphins, learn how they dive from sponges, out to the island to pick up sea shells!
This area looks like a little Greece... too many shops, friendly people and so much to do there... from boat trips and services to Greek style kitchen and desserts... because I am from Greece this place was emotional for me when I first visited it and I loved it... the most of the place are clean with good and friendly service and reasonable prices...
Nice stroll and places to buy sponges
This place was neat. Tons of little shops of all kinds. Definitely a place to check out if youre visiting Florida and in that area.
See detailed review posted.
Parking fees could be better in the off season considering the lots stay pretty empty. Love the shopping and restaurants here. The foot traffic gets a little heavy in the summer but also makes for great people watching.
It was a fun getaway spot
I loved that they had the hippie Festival there and everyone had a wonderful time recently.
A place to go and see. The Greek people there are supper. Very friendly. Plenty of places to eat and drink. There is a husband daycare (the beer bar) so women can shop. There are fishing trips that leave from there. You can walk from shop to shop with bakeries in between. If you are in the Tampa Bay Area stop in.
Downtown square all kinds of activity going on.Quite a few Greek restaurants. Tampa olive oilshop, really interesting, if u are a foodie. A spice shop in the area also. These picture are from The Hippie Festival. Shrimpwreck restaurant .Great food, great service (michelle), fair prices, live music, family friendly, full bar and craft beers. On the water. Wide range of food. Inside/outside seating. Big smoker fired up outside. Dockside views. Casual friendly experience.
For the locals this place is a fantastic treat, a real get away from the average place to go with all the beaches. There are tons of restaurants from which to choose, shopping from artwork to your typical tourist trap junk to gorgeous clothing to the most amazing pastries on Earth and so much more. I live less than an hour away and anytime I have guests from out of town this is a must do afternoon. The area is absolutely beautiful!
Wonderful place to spend a day strolling through shops and trying new foods
Its definitely a tourist location. Lots of stuff to see and things you can do. The food we ate was decent. Wanted to eat at Stellaz but was a very long line. Instead we ate next to the place and was happy. For dessert we went to a desert shop and probably just ate everything inside that place. I had the Baklava Cheesecake. As for parking located right in the middle of the strip was $8 but good until 2am and can come and go as many times that you wanted.
Always love getting my Greek on for a day!
Its always fun to play tourist in Tarpon Springs. There are great places to eat and lots of interesting shops to walk through. You have to take the boat tour at least once.
The sponge docks at tarpon Springs is an awesome strip of stores and restaurants. Also the mini cruise that I went on was 10.00 for an hour ride. The atmosphere the food and the people here is great. Go and have a good time. You wont regret it.
This place ROCKS or should I say is SPOUNGY! Amazing!
Shopping on the ocean with the sun shining and a light breeze, moments of joy
Such a historic and authentic cultural center with many small shops and Greek restaurants on every block. Would highly recommend going here for a weekend day trip. Make sure you take a boat tour as well!
Good place for tourist shopping and eateries
Reminds me of Duvall street key west Fla in the 70s
Great place to visit and get a taste of Greek culture and food.
A nice tourist area for finding souvenirs. We come here sometimes to walk and browse the shops and if you are looking for some Greek food, this is the place to go. There is also a small aquarium you can check out if you need to get out of the heat.
This is one of my favorite places to visit and spend the day. Theres everything you need, including restaurants and bars, quaint shops with beautiful handmade items, plenty of activities to keep yourself entertained, local musicians and artists which sometimes perform outside ( other times at bars), and very nice people. This is one place youll want to visit!
Such a great place to check out. Many things to see and do. Beautiful area.
We live close to the docks and really enjoy walking and watching the boats and all the people. A lot of great shops to visit and food so much food! You must try Hellas.
This was a lot of fun. Its a neat place that we will visit again. We found the sponge harvesting component very intriguing and enjoyed seeing the boats. We did quite a bit of shopping and found the town to be quaint. The lady working in the visitor center was really personable and helpful. Grab a map from there and brush up on the town history and offerings. You wont be sorry. However, I didnt like being asked about 10 times to do a dolphin tour or to eat at this or that restaurant. It was overkill and the reason I cant give 5 stars. Otherwise, it was a nice trip!
Had a great time and a wonderful Greek lunch on the water.
This is one of my favorite places to go in Florida! I love Tarpon Springs and this town is incredibly unique easy to spend a lot of time here super quirky beautiful on the water awesome food people are amazing.... took my dad and had an awesome day together!
Outstanding. . Great fun place to visit.
I spent a lot of Summers here with my Yia Yia and Papou who lived just a few streets away and lived here for 15 years myself. I come back every year and I enjoy the hospitality, the food and the ambiance of my Greek heritage!#opa
