Beautiful Catholic church built at the turn of the last century. The liturgy is rich and fulfilling. Lots of mass times. The Franciscans do it right.

I found this church while checking out moving to Syracuse. This has to be one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. I actually felt the spirit touch me. Something about this church is calling to me. I received all sacraments at a church Blessed Sacrament in Brooklyn. It is also quite beautiful. Look at both churches, I am on my way to Syracuse!

A fabulous Franciscan order Catholic churches. One of the finest architecturally speaking structure in the city. A hidden gem if havnt been inside. A nice place to pray, meditate or celebrate a Catholic Mass. The Fathers are wonderful, the services inspiring and a whole spiritual experience in my opinion. Parking is limited in a connected lot, plenty of free parking on street on Sundays but not other days. Cant say enough nice about the place.

Cold has returned to Genesee Street. The wind blew uphill, steadily, just strong enough to have a wind chill. We had a reprieve from winter, so I think, Okay, deal with it.A light dusting of snow sparkled under the street light.I enjoyed the pleasant weather last night, and I made a twenty minute walk up Salina Avenue to Little Italy, an enclave with small Italian restaurants.I wanted to have dinner at Francescas, which looked quaint and a bit secretive.I chose Biscottis instead because I could see the twin spires of Assumption Church from the cafes window.I ordered soup, a sandwich.Skipped the cannoli, saved the sandwich for later.Skipped the gelato, which I couldnt eat alone because I have good memories of gelato and companionship.I heard the bells of Assumption Church peeling at Six PM, ringing more than six times. The bells were calling the faithful to a mass observing the feast day of Saint Marianne Cope, who founded one of the great hospitals of Syracuse.I had interest in her story and had wanted to visit the church. Why not visit on a special occasion?I needed the weight of my body to open the front door.Nobody uses it that much anymore. The side door to the cathedral is more convenient to the parking lot.I hope a deacon locked the front door after I made sure with difficulty that it was closed properly. To call Assumption Church a church underestimates the immense structure.I took pictures of alabaster statues in numerous side chapels. The pulpit rose above the pews two stories. The cantor climbed to its high altar up a spiral staircase.A woman from Hawaii played a hymn from the islands.Mother Marianne Cope had established a colony in the late 1800s to care for Hawaiian lepers. The Hawaiian must have played in the organ loft high above us.I searched for a musician around the cathedral floor and I didnt find her.The priest identified who had played the ukulele, but the Hawaiian didnt so much as wave from the loft.As a mass, the service didnt seem too much different than a Sunday mass. And then the celebrant set out a relic of Saint Marianne and congregation lined up to adore it, each taking a turn. You may touch it. You may even kiss it, he instructed. The line was long.He hadnt granted permission to photograph it.The owner of Glazed and Confused has walked in with a few extra boxes of his decadent doughnuts.I heard him right, Please give your customers a free doughnut. The free doughnut was covered richly with shredded coconut.Feast of St. Marianne, indeed.I have my name tag on now as we leave the bus hub on the Fly.Twenty four minutes of travel shall bring me to work. The overhead lights are on so the surveillance cameras can film.Doesnt the bus company know people are trying to sleep?Im just glad to have some variety this morning.A woman marched into Cafe Kubal and ordered a brewed coffee to go.Then she asked for change for a twenty. And she got it.A man recalled when the buses waited for transfers at the corner of Fayette and Salina Streets, exposing passengers to hot sun and cold rain.Hes been taking the bus that long?A man was overheard asking a woman, You can get there from here?Yes, she affirmed. Absolutely!
