(Read end of review ) Absolutely stunning architecture and artwork. You will be awed by the sheer size and care of this amazing church. From murals, carvings, stained glass windows to a gorgeous pipe organ it will leave you speechless. Mentioned to the guide a key difference between Stations of the Cross 10-12 and he said it has never been picked up on before and must have been an artist error. SEE IF YOU CAN FIND IT
Absolutely love the cathedral basilica of St John. Its been a long time since I stepped into a church like this and it didnt disappoint. So rich in history. Stop by here just to look around and talk to the locals about the place. Had such a good time and even got to walk up to the altar. The pipe organs were amazing too. Hope you can come and see it someday.
This place was beautiful. Fantastic architecture and great historical site to visit in Savannah. I hadn’t realized I had found it while walking downtown, then I looked up and realized how magnificent and tell the building is! You won’t be disappointed by visiting. Even if you don’t get to take a tour of the building, it’s worth even a quick stop to see this beautiful building inside.
Powerful. So appreciated the solemnity and grandeur. The story of the cathedral is a testament to the love for Christ the local community shared at the turn of the 20th century. Their steadfast commitment to rebuilding the cathedral after a boiler room fire destroyed it should serve as an inspiration to all people of faith.Im not Catholic, but I respect the parishioners who call this building their place of worship.
Wow-The Basilica is gorgeous! The paintings are breathtaking, the stained glass windows are beautiful-everything about the inside of the Basilica is simply spectacular. We have attended mass a couple of times and the organ and choir are wonderful, they make the mass even more beautiful than it already is! The priests we have heard both times we went were also really good. I highly encourage a visit to the basilica and attend one of the masses if you can!
If you are planning to visit Savannah, Georgia . I highly recommend a visit to The Cathedral Of St.John the Baptist. Honestly no words to describe this amazing Cathedral. Give your self plenty of time to walk around and be sure to have a great camera on hand. I have being to this Cathedral three times and every time has being amazing. I know some of the trolly tours stop off at this location. Just check with your tour guide before purchasing your tickets. The structure inside and out side is absolutely incredible. Lots of attention to detail went into building The Cathedral Of St John the Baptist. It should be noted I am originally from Dublin, Ireland, Traveled all over the World with the US Marines and the United States. I definitely know a great Cathedral from my Travels. The Cathedral Of St John the Baptist in Savannah, Georgia is a must visit and rates ten stars ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ ️ and more!!!
Such a beautiful place! Such attention to detail in everything! Hearing this history was amazing!
Such an amazing place to go. We loved seeing one of gods greatest creations. God bless
Gorgeous and worth the visit whether you are Catholic or just need a moment of peace. Wonderful architecture and inspiring art.
Magnificent. Definitely worth taking 20 minutes and visiting this gem. The interior is breathtaking. Everywhere you look is stained glass, a sculpture, and paintings of religious scenes. And the altar is beautiful. Wow wow wow. And hey, leave $5 in the donation box. It cant be cheap to a/c this place.
So beautiful! inside the church was very solemn... very nice architecture of the church...
Breathtaking architecture and art. And a wonderful place to have a solemn moment of prayer. No disrespect but, modern design lacks the symmetry and beauty achieved here.Dan
Such a beautiful place! I had the pleasure of staying a few blocks away and would visit in the morning and evenings to take pictures of the low angled light. The architecture and lighting makes for some amazing compositions.
Absolutely stunning. We arrived right before mass was starting, the staff was very friendly and let us sneak in for a quick couple of minutes.
Beautiful place! This was my 2nd time coming here this year. However the host and security guard this time were just a bit rude to my husband. The guy that was here before that told us the history on the building was not here this time, nor was the helpful book for tourist to gain information from. Just be prepared to look up most information your self if he is not present.
It is a work of art. A work of art is admired for its beauty. From Bibb lettuce to foot washing it has gone through it all. Monumental building was a global craze during the 13th century. Savannah partook of it. This is a sacred place dating back thousands of years.
Absolutely beautiful! It is a must if youre in Savannah. Its very quiet and somber inside. Great experience. Knowledgeable staff of the history of it, dont be afraid to ask.
Beautiful place and you can tour it afterwards. Beautiful colors and lots of religious sites inside the church. One of the best I ever bin in.
Very gorgeous Cathedral. To see absolutely. Amazing organ and strained glass.
A beautiful cathedral. An architecture landmark and place of worship. A must see in Savannah
This place is absolutely beautiful. I took so many different types of shots, throughout our time in Savannah. It is also interesting to read about the history too.
They were nice but I’ve never been to a church where there was nobody to help you pray
Beautiful neo gothic Catholic church. Open to public for prayer and meditation. A little spiritual tuneup.
This sacred space is simply gorgeous! Every part of the Cathedral, from the beautiful sounds of the Noack organ to the lovely sculptures and paintings in the nave, culminates to form a divine setting for worship, weddings, and concert performances!
This is a must see when vizting Savanaha. The beauty inside the Cathedral is Awsome. Most Beatiful church ever entered.
Stunning church! The organ is amazing, they were practicing for a wedding when we slipped through on a tour, so we were treated to the organ and oddly enough, a bagpiper?
This place was amazing. Simply breathtaking.
Beautiful place side and out. They were doing organ practice while there. A man there told there are three thousand pipes to that organ.
Absolutely beautiful architecture! Friendly people, and just an amazing experience!
Most beautiful church that I have ever visited. Such history, every visitor to Savannah should definitely plan to visit.
Church is absolutely stunning. A must stop if your visiting Savannah.
Beautiful place...any one visiting Savannah should drop by to admire the beauty of this house of worship.
Beautiful architecture both internally and externally. The stained glass windows reflect a very beautiful light internally on sunny days. Very well maintained.
Beautiful place with a unique history. Catholics were originally prohibited from living in Oglethorpe’s colony but now clearly they have a presence in this town.We enjoyed a nice overview presentation from a very knowledgeable and interesting docent named Marcia MacBride.
An incredibly beautiful church with tons of history.
Wow, beautiful church and a very informative gentleman fills you.in on the churchs rich history. Well worth the visit
Very beautiful Cathedral. A must see when visiting Savanah.
Beautiful cathedral with history and a peaceful feeling.
Do not miss this place! This is probably the most stunning place of worship I have ever seen. We were lucky enough that a man who is a member of the congregation happened to be there, gathered a few folks around, and gave some of the history. Make a donation! This place is free, but it costs to keep it up and open to the public. Well worth your time.
Provided a very nice break from the heat. The air conditioning was fantastic! Very beautiful on the inside. 5/5 would pray here again
I dont understand places of worship where theyre not kind to people. I first moved to Savannah a year ago, and at that time a very passive aggressive lady said Im going to kindly ask u to leave as if she owns the place. Now a year later I decided to go to noon mass, and they have a sheriffs officer!! I arrived at the entry way, and he asked me as a f I were a nuance why was I there! I said -Im here for mass!- then he basically gave me the go ahead. The guy is getting paid from, and by the tax payers. Now the cathedral obviously gets some benefits from the tourists if they get security paid by the tax payers!!! Please be kind catholic church!! Oh btw the priest who officiated the mass was no better! Not even bye have a nic day, thank you for coming. Obviously this church needs some better leadership. Everything starts with the head of the family. Im catholic but boy, its difficult to find a good parish. It reminds me of when jesus kicked out the merchants out of the his fathers house. Hopefully Jesus will take care of this church so some day people will feel welcomed and appreciate it.
Stunning church in the heart of downtown Savannah. This outside of the church has wonderful architecture. A must see if in the area.
Amazing history and beautiful work done by German artisans. If you get the chance to see this cathedral in Savannah they have someone there to walk you through the history. The stained glass windows are from Austria and the stations of the cross were carved in Oberammergau, Germany. Having spent a couple years in southern Bavaria, I found this church to be a real delight.
Such a beautiful place! I wish they were already done with the renovations, but still a peaceful place to be.
This place is gorgeous. We walked in while a guide was explaining some facts about the building. Which was really nice to hear. I loved the respect people had for this place. For so many people in one room it was quiet. If I had come alone I could have sat here for hours just taking everything in.
I always love looking at beautiful old churches and Cathedrals. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, in Savannah Georgia, is a beautiful example of the Neo Gothic style. It remains one of the top ten historic sites in the U.S.
Absolutely gorgeous! Dont miss going inside! No photos can do this place justice.
Wow. All I can say is the cathedral is incredible. Just incredible
Probably the most breath taking church Ive ever stepped foot in.
This is such a breathtaking cathedral. The detail in the building is exquisite. The atmosphere is very calm and quiet.
This was a very cool part of our trip. Its jaw dropping!
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist becomes one of the focal points for the annual St. Patricks Day parade, which is held in Savannah on March 17th every year. There are people walking, riding in cars, army trucks, police and fire vehicles, and thousands of onlookers, too.
A beautiful neighborhood, truly. What goes better with a perfect place? A perfect church .Yes sir and yes maame, this here is one fine piece if architecture
Great place to see.. such beauty and is a need to see place.. even if you aren’t catholic it is still such a beautiful place to see.. I went on the old town trolley and they said it was top 20 of the most beautiful places in the world ... yes the world
Absolutely stunning! Be sure to talk with the gentleman at the photo album towards the front of the church, he was full of extra info and tidbits that made our visit even more fun and interesting! The lady at the front table was not so friendly however!
Beautiful gothic cathedral located in the heart of Savannah Historic District. This is definitely a little slice of heaven on earth. You must go if you’re in the area! There are 2 masses held a day and 4 on Sundays and is also open to the public. They suggest a $3 donation but you don’t have to.
Very beautiful. Need to stop in and look at all the stain glass windows.
Bueatiful place to take a tour thur historic event
Excellent choir. Lovely Latin services. A must go for any Catholic. Beautiful architecture and paintings if youre a tourist.
The cathedral is the most amazing and beautiful house of God Ive ever seen. A must visit if in Savannah.
Such a beautiful chapel. Everything was jaw dropping.
Another breath taking place to visit! Absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful building. Staff is a bit brash, friendliest person on site was the sheriff at the front door, who doesnt work there.Sad to see so much money dumped into buildings and the staff act like they are better than others.Heres a tip, save your tithe money and feed the hungry, give to mom having a hard time, this place doesnt have any needs besides an attitude adjustment.
Simply stunning architecture!
One of the most beautiful places in Savannah. I got off at this stop on our trolley tour just to take photos. Its my 2nd time seeing it but it never stops being impressive.
Just gorgeous! Highly recommend. I never get tired of going there.
Absolutely stunning. If you get the time to stay for mass I definitely recommend it.
Beautiful church well maintained. must visit on your trip to savannah
Gorgeous and a volunteer who explained much of the church history, very interesting and knowledgeable. Worth the 1/2 hour to 45 minute church history by a member volunteer.
Beautiful cathedral! A wonderful tribute to Christianity.
Beautiful! Church with a lot of history. Well worth the visit! We were in Savannah for a 60th BiRthDaY party and was doing some sight seeing. This cathedral is easy to walk to and is part of an historic square that is very pretty. They still give regular services so if you’re wanting to visit and take pictures make sure it’s not during those times as they will not allow you to.
Been here 4 times and it never gets old. It is just so beautiful.
Beautiful historic church with amazing architectural details both inside and outside.
I loved this church when I have been visiting.Staff is very friendly and answer a lot of questions. The Mass was very emotional.
What an amazing cathedral. I really love the stained glass and stone carvings. Keep in mind this cathedral is still being used and therefore you may have to wait while a funeral or wedding is taking place. Definately worth the time to see this amazing cathedral.
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is some place you have to see in person if youre in Savannah. It is one of the most beautiful places in Savannah. You will be in awe of the architecture and amazed once you step inside. Its hard to describe the feeling of warmth and calm that comes over you the minute you enter. The cathedral is free to visit but a $3 or more donation is suggested.
Beautiful Cathedral! Gives you that amazing feeling of smallness when inside.. exquisite ornate gothic arches and stained glass windows.. just breathtaking!
Just beautiful! Well worth a visit. It is called the Sistine Chapel of the south for good reason. The Cathedral had a major renovation and freshening up in the mid 2000s. The stained glass, stations of the cross and murals are spectacular. It is such a bright, light and airy cathedral due to its unique steel support structure. Make sure to listen to the 15 min lecture that is given continuously through the day. It is not on any time schedule but at the discretion of the person doing the lecture. Make sure to bring cash to make a contribution ($3 suggested) and to purchase books, CDs, postcards, christmas ornaments etc. There is not a bookstore but a table at the back by the doors. Just know that mass is performed a few times each day and you will not be able to tour during those times. Mass was at 7:30am and 12 noon the day I visited.
Not only is it a gorgeous cathedral, it is a gorgeous parish. We attended one of the finest masses that I have ever experience, the 10 AM Sunday service. Great homily, thundering organ, angelic choir. I left feeling blessed.
This Cathedral is beyond words. It is so amazing the most beautiful works of art I have seen.
Beautifull arquitecture, a very solem place of prayer, just bhreathtaking and impressive!
It is beautiful! Every where you turn the artistry is absolutely breathtaking! with a lot of history- His -Story. I sat down and said a prayer. If in Savannah, Georgia a must visit!
Quiet and incredibly pristine. Beautiful stained glass. 3 dollar donation requested to support but no feeling of pressure to do so. One of the big worth while stops in Savannah.Bonus that it has great air conditioning on a hot walking day downtown.
A must see when Im Savannah. Unbelievable wood carvings of Jesus crucifixion.
We visited Savannah 2 weeks ago and to see the beautiful architecture of this cathedral
Ive been to Notre Dame, St. Paul. and Westminister Abbey. All were mesmerizing due to their architecture and history. I didnt think such a place existed in the States until I stepped foot at St. John. There is something mysterious when you enter. You dont have to be Catholic to appreciate this place. Its beautiful and capitalizing.
Awesome place to visit during your stay in Savannah... no entrance fee ; donation accepted..
The ceiling and stained glass are GORGEOUS! A definite must see.
Awesome place. Reminded me of some of the cathedrals we saw in Europe.
This is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to! I wish we could have attended mass while we were visiting. We will be back...
Such a beautiful cathedral. Wish there was a handout about the features for those who are not Catholic. Stained glass windows were amazing.
Regardless of your religious beliefs or disbeliefs should you get the chance to see the cathedral you should take it. The Tiffany stained glass is awe inspiring in its detail and the artwork on the walls is stunning. Pictures do not do this place justice as they cannot capture the magnitude of the cathedral. Even with it under construction, it is a sight to behold. I highly recommend taking a look at the detail of the windows and the stations of the cross.
Amazing cathedral. Great architecture and Staines glass. Loves the view
Beautiful Cathedral in Savannah. A must see if you are touring the area. It reminds me of the churches you would find in Europe. Gorgeous stained glass artwork all along the sides of the building.
Such an awe inspiring place to visit! It is absolutely breathtaking! The architecture is amazing. I only wish you could see more than just the main sanctuary. I would love a full tour of this immense structure. This is a bit to miss stop in your tour if Savannah!
Very nicely built and maintained church. The nativity scene sure is a sight to see. As the locals suggest, count all the animals that don’t belong in Bethlehem.
This is a must see if you go to Savannah!!
Nice church.
