This is one of my favorite spots near Santa Fe. I love the canyon walls and the sandy trail. It’s easy to hike and beautiful to look at.I bring friends from out of town here all the time. The river is super beautiful. But definitely watch out for rattle snakes. Especially if you’re bringing kids or dogs. We saw a gorgeous 3’ one the other day sun bathing on the sand on the side of the trail. (It was wide enough to keep a respectful distance though.)
This is the perfect scenic hike right outside Sante Fe. Best done in the morning before the sun hits its high, sun block is a must. Theres hardly any shade along the trail but reaching the end gives you a chance to cool off at the Rio Grande river. Unfortunately, off-road vehicle access towards the river allows lazy tourists to toss beer bottles and debris along the trail. My wife and I picked up a whole bag of bottles to carryout. It ruined the end of the trail for us a bit to see all the litter. Keep it clean!
Awesome spot, really enjoyable rock climbing and decent camping. The porta-potty was super full ( memorial day weekend ) but the area was quiet. if you like to rock climb this is the spot for you. Nice people and dog friendly. Bring your own toilet paper. The road is rough (lots of wash boards most of the drive) :)
Amazing canyons on the old Camino Real. My ancestors used to walk these canyons and now so do I.
Great spot for a hike or rock climbing. There are a few hundred routes along the cliffs. Camp sites and a portable toilet are available for free. The road here is dirt but hard packed and heavily washboarded. An SUV or off-road capable vehicle is not necessary to access the parking area but could make for a more comfortable ride.
Baeutiful area! Great easy hiking
Spectacular! Beware of the 8-mile dirt road drive in, but it was well-maintained. There were a few people there, some doing technical climbing. Bring your water and snacks. We saw a rattle snake and a tarantula so watch your step. The walk directly down the canyon is very easy, but you can do some scramble up the sides for views and exploring the side canyons.
If youre looking for a great free primitive camp site with lots of space to explore, this spot is simply spectacular. It has three individual sites and one large group site in the middle of the loop, all with fire pits and lots of room to spread out. It has no water or bathrooms, so come prepared or youll have to drive the super-bumpy washboard dirt road back into Santa Fe to re-up on supplies!Climbers come by the dozens to scale the canyon, and its a perfect day hike for families, dog owners, and nature -lovers, and theres plenty of room to share. You can easily walk the flat 4-ish miles round-trip through the canyon to reach the Rio Grande, or hike up to the top of either side of the canyon. The views from every hike are gorgeous.14-day max stay. We stayed all 14 days and would have stayed longer if we could!
The road is horrible but the walk itself is nice. Dont go in the heat of summer though as it is super hot and not much shade.
Great steep and long sport climbing on Basalt. Something for everyone.Hot in the summer perfect in the winter, late fall and early spring. Highly recommended.
Great area for camping and climbing! Out in the middle of nowhere and you look up and just see all the stars!!
Ansel Adams would have loved it here!Great hiking, outstanding rock climbing, Has RV, Tent camping, and group camping areas.Quiet, solitude, natureBring everything with you, no bathrooms, water, electric or other amenities, definitely worth the trip though! 10 miles of washboard dirt road. If you are in an RV be prepared to break some dishes!
Great walk to the Rio Grande.
Watch out for nails in the road. Got a flat on the way out.
Fun hike! Love the scenery!
The direction I was given take you on a long trip on a primative road. Not made for the regular car trust me. So I would suggest doing this by ATV or horseback. But what a cool place.
Out of the way and wonderful spot to access the Rio Grande.
Best choss in santa fe
Awesome place!
First part of the hike is beautiful. After that has blah.
Pretty spectacular. An awesome and pretty easy hike (a walk really) through basalt canyon walls and then it opens up on the way to the Rio Grande. If youre lucky youll see climbers on the canyon walls.
Very good place to go jogging...and sir seeing...
Beautiful canyon and all sorts of super fun rock climbing. A few too many drones though.
Santa Fe Jeep Tours is one of the best operations to get you to Diablo Canyon and back without getting dead.Kind of their specialty.
This place is so nice and clean it also has amazing views
Gorgeous place to dip your toes in the Rio Grande, a short drive from Santa Fe.
Beautiful hiking or camping spot not very far from Santa fe! I love hiking there, the scenery is breathtaking.
This is an excellent free campsite. Dont expect anything but a place to set up a tent or park your van however. To get here you need to take Old Buckman Rd (dirt washboard) from Camino La Tierra (paved), any other route is likely to fail and be a huge waste if time.
Absolutely stunning
Jeeezus!!!
I climbed winter wall and hands down, the worst climbing ever.
Great hike.
Interesting canyon and trail to Rio Grande
So close to Santa Fe, filled with silence.
