An eye opening experience. I wasnt sure what folks art was about and Im still left wondering about many things. But I walked away with a new appreciation for what people around the world are making. Also, throughout the museum there were neat interactive boards for people to post their own art and writings.
So pottery is the only Indian art and culture. I would have liked to seen other cultural items presented.
Interesting exhibits...if you can see them. Lots of items behind glass but very poor lighting on many of them. We went on a cool day but found the temperature in the galleries to be much too warm. Very nice, but pricey, museum store with excellent offering of Native American music. The cage next door is worth going to on its own.
Although we did not get to go into the museums, the scenery is beautiful.
Truly authentic. Unique and memorable. Learn more about the indigenous heritage that is quintessential Santa Fe. Honor and respect live here. Thank you for offering so many folks a way to understand the important culture of the past, present, and future of the native peoples, and their art that thrives here.
Huge collection of Native American culture. They have a nice display of Jewellery by Novajo people. You can get an idea of what kind of jewellery they used to wear and make and how Spanish culture influenced them. They have a dispaly of some contemporary paintings too. You should visit if you love history and arts.
This review is only about the staff, not about the rest of the museum which is so good. I arrived with my parents and asked how much the tickets are. Two men at the front desk answered tickets are $30 per person. So I looked around and saw something in a wall behind some hooks: New Mexico residents: $7. Non resident: $12. I told them this and they gave us the three of the tickets for $31. They wanted to sell us the Culture Pass which is valid for several museums and historic sites, but did not let us choose until I saw the prices. When we asked where is the Folk Art museum they said there is no longer in there. It does not exist anymore. But when we went out of the building we discovered it was just in front of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. Why they acted like this? I don´t know but its not polite to treat people like this when they come from many places in the world to see your museum
72 pints is The Wild on my grandmothers was in Indian Indian
Dont underestimate the time that you need to see everything in this Museum. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of squatting to see the exhibits in the lower parts of the displays. There is a whole section of pottery that is a must-see. Great place for archaeology inclined!
So much to see, so little time! Its an extraordinary museum, giving one the feel and insight into the native culture. Well worth the stop on Museum hill.
Outstanding exhibits presenting art and artifacts of the various tribes of New Mexico. Well worth two hours to explore hundreds of years of Indian life. Beautiful building, outdoor art and stunning views are a bonus.
This museum is amazing! It focuses more on anthropology than art, but the items they have and the contextual information they provide on the various first cultures and items really help to understand these peoples. This is one of the best museums on Southwest Native Americans I have ever encountered, and cant be missed if you have any interest in this subject!
Scenery around the museum is beautiful. The Hispanic portion of the museum looks similar to the Toy Museum in Nuremburgh, Germany. There is also a Japenese spirit exhibit and a musical instrument exhibit that are quite interesting. The gift shop is very nice and not very expensive that you should stop in to see.
Great museum. Have very old artifacts and lots of Native American history as you would expect. Some political slant in some exhibits. Fabulous gift shop. The music selection is A+ and you can listen to samples. A definite should do when in Santa Fe.
Reason for 1 star: on internet, it showed the museum is open. After driving there from quite far, we found out it was closed!!!
Beautiful Museum and great exhibit!
A lovely museum filled with tiny intimate details of both pre-columbian and contemporary native culture. Focused on the Southwest region, so dont expect stuff from all over North America.
I loved this museum! As I am not from the region myself I miss a lot of background in the subject our native America, who they are/are, where the live/lived and all other aspects of their culture (expect maybe the caricature in movies..). I was therefore delighted to learn much more about this in this museum and to be able to look at the nice art! The museum collection is thoughtfully made and teaches a lot.
Several museums located on the hill... great way to see them all! Lovely area.
Not what I expected. Very impressed with what I saw and was never bored. Too much to see in one visit.
Lovely museum of mid-century modern design and folk art featuring a lot of toys and miniatures. Cited with several other museums and a botanical garden. Beautiful location with views. The cafe is great for lunch.
Outstanding museum exhibits, lectures. New exhibits continuously installed. A timeline walk through the centuries of Native cultures and artifacts. Excellent tours, wonderful gift shop, outdoor sculpture exhibits too on the open plaza on top of the hill. I am a long-standing member of the NM Museum Foundation, too.
Simply a fabulous museum. The first hand (multi-media) accounts of Indian life which were interspersed throughout the museum were especially moving and insightful.
If you want to learn about the Indian culture of a variety of environments, then this is a mandatory stop.Well presented with just the right balance of words and objects. The trail for the past, present and future exhibit is one of the best ive seen during the past 8 days of exploring the area.Best way to see it is to get the $30 culture pass and visit the museums in Albuquerque, Taos, and especially museum hill in Santa Fe.
Great way to see histoical, precious pieces of expressive arts.
I enjoyed the history which gives a true understanding of the native American life.
I was disappointed to not really see a deeper story of the Native people I was hoping to see more of the trials and pain and issues that continue today from the horrific things that happened to them from the Europeans invasion. But it was just mostly vases and bowls. All beautiful but still.
Super fun look at local art and cultural influences from Europe that helped create this rich tradition of the Americas.
If you need a break from art and are interested in the history of the area then this is a good stop. The gift shop has a great book selection.
Was able to see the exterior only because of the pandemic.
Its nice i was not able to take pictures and the guards were nice to i had a good time it was smaller than I thought it was gonna be but there was alot to read to if u dont like to read alot then i would not go to it
We had a wonderful experience on a scheduled homeschool fieldtrip. They gave helpful information and a great hands on activity.
Absolutely delicious. Soup of the day exceptional
If you are in santa Fe a must see. The exhibition is amazing and you can photograph it. The views from the museum to surrounding area are spectacular.
Big disappointment. Poorly organized and illuminated. No guidance provided, turning what is probably a very interesting story into random free for all.
Inside the premier repository of Native art and material culture are the stories of the people of the Southwest.Developed through collaborating with tribes, the core exhibition “Here, Now and Always” presents stories of creation, survival and everyday life over 14,000 years in the Southwest. The Buchsbaum Gallery of Southwestern Pottery offers changing selections in a permanent display that represent the development of a community tradition in the pueblos of New Mexico and Arizona.Throughout the year, the museum serves a diverse, multicultural audience through many changing exhibitions.Families will enjoy the educational programs.
Native Americans shouldnt have to pay to see their ancestors art. Didnt go inside .
Best ever museum.beautiful.wonderful displays.beaytifully maintained huge lovely artifacts thoroughly appreciated
Lovely museum. Enjoyed the pottery collection and video on how one type of pottery is made. The exhibit on the Native American Standing Rock Protest in ND over the oil pipeline was very good. Another example of the federal government running roughshod over Native Americans.
GMaps will not believe that Ive never been here. But this is part of a very nice museum complex.
Great museum compound. Very friendly staff. Lots of displays.
They have 3 halls closed but the rest was very good
Very interesting and well executed visual art works created by contemporary artists. These works were the most interesting things we saw today.
Very nice and interesting.
Really colorful, beautifully displayed and great information. They have the most awesome little play area for kids and a coloring area in the back.My only suggestion would be to make it easier for kids to see the displays. Everything is high up and i only saw one step. Maybe these could be added all around?Other than that, this museum was really nice!
Wow! New Mexico and Native American cultural overload!! Beautiful venue for an event too.
Beautiful museum.
This one is a baaad money grab.I would like to re-name this Museum of Indian Arts & Culture for white people because where else do you get to see multiple modern kitchens belonging to First Nations people? Half completed & poorly designed displays of mostly pottery and many hallways and nooks darkened out (i.e. with no displays). For example, I needed a flashlight to read the tags that explain said pottery. Considering that theres another Native museum one block away (the Wheelwright) Id say this is a baaad money grab.
There museums are amazingly diverse, and the cafe had excellent food
It shows us people on how they do things way back then so Im very supportive of this place
Lovely but CLOSED!!
An incredible museum that shares historic and contemporary art by indigenous peoples. I have seen many wonderful exhibits in their temporary exhibit area. Photos by Lindbergh of historic sites and beadwork are my favorite.
One of the best museums in the country
It is very informative, well designed. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly
Beatiful pottery. Very interesting indigenous art history.
I loved this museum! I found it very informative and fun to see all the exhibits.. if you are in new Mexico make it a point to go visit it!
We ate at the Pueblo restaurant. The service was great and the manager checked with us a few times to be sure we were happy. The food was fresh and very well made and the portions were generous. The only negative was the bathrooms were freezing.
This is a special resource for the SouthwestI attended two classes, ine on Southwest Jewelry and another on Navaho rugs. Very informative and worth my time.
Fascinating exhibits especially loved the jewelry
Came here fer Standing Rick exhibit.WATER IS LIFE yall. ya cant drink oil... will be returning fer de masterpieces o Pueblo pottery. thatll be an all day deal, gladly seaux! de knowledge n collection here is non parallel.
I actually didn’t get to see much of the exhibits due to the time restrictions but got to purchase some unique items Native artists from NM created. Definitely worth a visit.
Especially appreciated the video of Maria Montoya Martinez at work. The Pottery Room is beautiful and very informative.
Great day with my students! We all loved making our puppets! I made the doll from Lilo and Stitch for my son, so much fun!!
Enjoyed seeing all of the exhibits. I especially found the Standing Rock exhibit very powerful
Deeply inspiring, powerfully educational, and dramatically beautiful!
Fascinating museum. Interesting exhibits.
This is a beautiful, spiritual experience. This represents the stories of the 22 Native Peoples of New Mexico (2-Apache tribes, 19- Pueblos and Navajo) a must see
They had a very well-planned layout showing all of the Indian crafts clothing, housing, trade goods and how they constructed their housing. Also showed some of the problems with interaction with past and present government intervention in their lives.I am not sure how long I was there but probably an hour and a half.
I’m not sure why this place is called the museum of international folk art because it really should be called something like the museum of international he gone wild in miniature collections or something like that. Yes there is a folk art component and some of the exhibition halls, but the real focus of the museum is an utterly and completely a fantastic collection of miniatures. What? Yes I said miniatures. It really is something to see, and if you feel bad about collecting anything at all, after going to this museumYou should feel good and you’ll want to collect even more.
This museum is well designed and has an amazing collection of Native American artifacts.
Great exhibits. One of the volunteers saw us come in and even though she was on her way home approached us and asked us of wed like her to show us her favorite thing in the museum. We learned a lot from her in the short amount of time she was able to take out of her schedule.
Great for quality time with the family. Everyone enjoys plus the kids!(:
They have always been here and will always be. No photos allowed
Well worth the visit. Learned what brain tanning is; dont ask.
Ancient and modern indigenous art and craft. Well worth many visits.
The museum has lots of interesting exhibits there. They have lots of old artifacts there and they date them so you know how old it is. Also lots of displays and recreations of things. I would recommend this museum and it will be even better because they were doing work to some parts of it while I was there.
I thought I knew a lot about the New Americans art but here you can see the expanse and depth of the rich and very diverse tribes culture.
Well thought out, very well displayed.
Incredible New Mexican experience! The museum presents a fantastic blend of culture, art, and history in a respectful way. I enjoyed the various video interviews and testimonies exhibited throughout the museum. Definitely worth the visit.
A great place. Some exhibits were closed.
Beautiful objects, wide variety of displays, learned a lot.
Lots of hands on stuff, exhibitions! Loved it!
We really enjoyed our visit there. The tour guide was very knowledgable.
Wonderful and interesting exhibits with very knowledgeable and friendly guide. I LOVE the Tramp art exhibition. Great gift shop. Plan to spend several hours here.
Everything in this musuem is interesting and would be interesting to kids as well as adults. Just the right size to fill up a couple hours in and the gift shop is great for getting a unique gift youll never find anywhere else.
Museums are always interesting to stroll through, and I try to make it a point to check them out when I visit a new place. Every take is different. This one stood apart from many others Ive been to.Not only were the exhibits tasteful and creative, they did an amazing job communicating their story and the emotion behind it. Joy in community, the struggles of surviving, and the immense sadness permeating where many stand today.I left feeling privileged to have seen a glimpse of the past, and humbled by the new tint to the colors of the world.
So much beautiful folk art to see!
I was told there is no photography that was upsetting the tour guide was very rude!it eas a Camino real fild trip..
Stunning museum. The exhibits give you a chance to hear Navajo and Pueblo people telling their own history. Great collection of contemporary art by Native American artists.
Great place to visit to see Native culture. Very sacred artifacts, hundreds of years old. Really amazing. Well worth the time.
Went to see an art show with a friend and it was the best. This is a very friendly space with works that create culturally friendly conversations. Would recommend more than one visit.
