A must on your first visit to Santa Fe. We did not know very much New Mexico State history, and left informed and enlightened. Our only regret was the Palace of the Governors was closed due to renovations and we were unable to tour that. (Aug 2019) Follow the timeline for the best experience. Wonderful displays. Beautiful gift shop. Highly recommend!
It is the merging of the old and the new! The New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors in downtown Santa Fe are now connected. The Palace of the Governors is one of the oldest occupied government buildings in the U.S. and has witnessed four centuries of history. A 96,000 sq.ft. New Mexico History Museum has been added next to it that displays ancient artifacts, modern-day films, different scopes of exhibits.Visit these two sites and learn about New Mexico’s native people — from the Spanish colonizers to the Mexican settlers.
We visited this museum the weekend after the Forth of July, 2019. In my opinion this museum lives up to many other attractions in Santa Fe, overrated and overpriced. We were charged the regular out of state admission rate, even though the Palace of the Governors was being renovated (meaning we could not view this exhibit). Yes, we were warned prior to being charged for admission. Yes, we were still charged the twelve dollar admission even though the Palace exhibit was closed. WHY?The rest of the museum was nothing special, especially the Atomic Age exhibit (where photography is prohibited, though Im not sure why since its such a poor excuse for a museum exhibit). That being said, the permanent exhibits DO NOT justify this admission rate.I do not recommend this museum to anyone. We will not be back, Palace or not.
Everyone was helpful and the exhibits were neat.
Although it looks nice, the collection is oddly composed. Text is often not well written or without clear details. A lot of awkward moments where Native American genocide is brushed over in favor of Euro-Christian triumphs. The Moon/Apollo exhibit was barely more than a high school book report and the atomic history exhibit was also strangely slapped together. However the place looks like it has a lot of funding and generic museum-like decor.
Okay, but leaves a lot of open questions about how the land was robbed from the natives an what happened with them. This shameful part of the history is underrepresented while there are 2 rooms about soldiers in both World Wars which feels misplaced in a museum like this. Unfortunately, it runs into the same patriotic trap as a lot of other museums in the states instead of taking care of a critical view on the own history. Such museums should take over this role and shouldnt run the patriotism way.
This place was fascinating. So much history in NM and it was amazing to be exposed to it. Also, kudos to them for giving me free admission for being a veteran. I didnt ask for it, but they went out of their way to ask after looking at my drivers license. Friendly staff, too!
Fascinating, and a super cool location. It’s in a historic part of town; and although parking is a bit of a challenge, there’s lots of fun galleries and places to eat within walking distance. The museum itself is informative and very well done. I can’t wait to come back and spend even more time there.
This is a great museum. So much history. There are so many things to see. Definitely a good place for children learning New Mexico history.
There are lots of artifacts in the museum. The museum is really big and hard to do in one day. There are a good amount of computer activities there which are nice. There is a Native American market outside where they have all sorts of things like leather and jewelry. It is very nice.
Free for military, and a great way to learn more about the area
Construction aside, it is a gorgeous building that doesnt look dated one bit. The Japan Art Deco exhibit was top notch. Great experience.

This is a very wonderful museum, I think the best in New Mexico. It has great interactive exhibits.
Today at the New Mexico History Museum I was asked to leave since the gift shop after doing nothing wrong. It is arrogant for an adult to think that just because someone is young means they are going to steal something. I felt that it was disrespectful for the employee to assume such a deed. This is not how you treat customers and individuals. I feel that an 18 year old should not have to be constantly monitored since they have done nothing wrong.
The historical timeline narrative of New Mexicos history in the main core exhibit was both thought provoking and informative to someone whom is unfamiliar with the states history.
For me, a must see when visiting Santa fe. Many active displays, and a very nice timeline of the New Mexican history.
