If youre in Santa Barbara, love bouldering and hiking, and are up for a driving adventure, this is for you.I was in a rented Camaro Convertible and the kind valet at the hotel told me when I asked for a nice hike for my birthday to drive until I thought I was lost, and then keep going some more. That is pretty accurate. This hike is one of those you can blink and miss it if you dont have it in your GPS but itll bring you to the spot. Parking can be tight but youll probably be able to find a spot on the side of the road. Its beautiful when you come into the open rock clearing with a view of the coast and the city of Santa Barbara far below. You can easily boulder and hike around for a while and enjoy the views. Its so much fun!I have to say, if I didnt follow another couple to the Lizards Mouth rock, Id have never found it. Its not a clearly marked trail. But its super cool when you do find it off to the far right of the rock clearing when you come out to the viewpoint.
If you’re looking for something to do for a couple hours, here is the place. The entrance is not easy to find. GPS (Google map or Apple map) will not take you to the entrance. It’ll tell you you’ve arrived but you’re still in the middle of the road. Just keep driving up. You’ll start seeing views of rocks. The entrance is on the left but the sign is not curbside. If you reach the gun club, you go too far and must turn around. When you drive down, just keep looking on the right (not far from the gun club) and it’ll see the sign. The sign is easier to spot when driving down than driving up. Parking is off street and there are a couple areas with large space that could park a few cars. Just park in those areas and walk to the entrance. With a short hike (only minutes), you’ll reach the rock area like a vista point with beautiful view of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. You can climb around the rocks but be careful because it can be slippery with gravels. Wear sport shoes or Keen-like shoes for easy climbing. Also bring a light jacket or a windbreaker because it’s windy. Wear a hat, put on sun screen, bring water & snacks and enjoy the day.
When you see the sign for the hike, go to the RIGHT of it. We went to the left and wandered aimlessly for quite a while. : / Anyway, the hike is straight after that and pretty easy. After a short amount of time, youll get to the cliff with great views! To get to the actual Lizards Mouth Rock, its a bit more treacherous and we decided not to go with a toddler. But the view is good at the end of the easy part!
Loved this beautiful we are definitely coming back the surroundings were so nice sweet and humble people. Loved this coast area good memories made here!
Great place to go for a short hike and an amazing view over the Santa Barbara area. The trailhead might be a bit hard to find and the road as soon as you get off the freeway is narrow and winding. At the trailhead you can follow the trail a bit but it splits off into different path from which you can climb the rocks.
Lizards mouth rock has some great views, and getting to the views is not that difficult. It is rather difficult to find the entrance, as the sign is not easily visible from driving. There are cars parked near the area, and hiking in only takes about 10 minutes. There are some critters there, so if you are scared of snakes or similar, be warned.
That is a big mountan place with many rocks forments holes and figures like lizards mouth with a wonderful view to Santa Barbara and Isla Vista.
This a great spot to check out! I saw lots of families and older people doing it! The one tough part about the trail here is that a lot of it is rocks and theres not really a clear path there and back, you have to use your wits a little and just look at the rock to help guide you! Overall, a very fun adventure!
Great place to pull over and look over the city at night. Good place for climbers during the day, lots of boulders.
This is a great place to go bouldering! Met some new friends out at the crag while getting some sick climbing in.
Incredible view of Goleta and Santa Barbara on the top of the rocks. Its a short hike and its a lot of rock, you still need to be careful! (Careful if its raining : very slippery!!) All the rocks makes the land very unique, I really love being there. There is no indication panel or trail to follow but you can just go straight and turn left when you cant go straight. Also there is not a big parking lot (at all) on the road, so my advice is to not go in high season. And the road to get there can get you sick but its very beautiful too :)It can be very windy so bring some protection and eventually hair tie, you will thank me ;)
Just take a wander and see the wonder.
Lizards Mouth is a short and lovely hike in to an epic rock feature that sorta resembles a lizard, yet its the view that from the lizard that is the real treat. Great for a date or picnic and there is rock climbing for climbers of all calibers. Just dont get caught in the fog up there because the trail can be easy to lose.
We are relatively new to rock climbing and ever since a friend took us out here, we have thoroughly enjoyed practicing up here, for bouldering and practicing grip holds, finger grips etc. Super windy and cold during the winter months, and we look forward to Tue spring and summer when its warmer. I would suggest you wear layers when you come out here. Still great views of Santa Barbara and IV. Its so green right now. (2/28/19)
Amazing viewpoint above the city of Santa Barbara! Its a lot of fun scrambling across the rocks if you are into climbing, and even if you arent, it is very easily accessible. Its a great location for hanging out, and its a favorite of mine for taking photos! Would highly suggest checking it out around sunset!
Take care on the road getting there, its very winding and narrow in some places.Great place for a little rock hopping and wonderful views of Santa Barbara and Goleta down below. It is a short hike (5 mins) to the Lizards Mouth overhang from the road. No designated trail and you have to watch your footing. The kids will have great fun exploring too.
I expected a hike, but it is more of a (large) rocky climb/jumps to the lizard mouth. Very nice place to have a picnic under some ledges. The inside of the lizard mouth is not accessible unless you are a climber who knows their ropes so please dont try because the drop from the top of the mouth is very high. Overall, it is a nice place to take in the view of SB!
Very short fun hike!
A beautiful place to hike in, camp in, or just cost. You can get views of the whole city from that area, and the rocks are great to scramble up. I come to Lizards Mouth very often, and I think it is a place everyone should go to. Below are photos of foggy day;
Beautiful ocean views and great climbs. Easy hiking options
Cool views, shirt distance from road, easy parking
Was the best Experience Ive had in a while defiantly worth the getting or into the wilderness to see nature in its best of beauty
I really liked this place, the drive there is on a very narrow mountain road, my girlfriend and I took a couple of RCs with us, we had a great time driving around.
Great views of the mountains, ocean, and islands from this large rock outcropping accessible from West Camino Cielo.
I have always loved exploring Lizards Mouth! Its such a beautiful area close to home.
Beautiful views, interesting rock formations, caves, and just plain outdoor fun. A great place to get away from the everyday of Santa Barbara. Take west Camino Ceilo almost to the end, park on the side of the road with the car completely off the road. Explore and have fun. Great place to see the sun sets.
A very interesting a cool hiking area and rock climbing spot. A lot of interesting rock featires amd incredible views of Santa Barbara amd the ocean. Also, a lot of reptiles in the area. I personally saw many lizards here and a young rattlesnake on the road.
Just go there. It’s gorgeous and doesn’t look like the central coast. Will likely have to do some minor clambering. Good for kids age 5 and up. Sunset is awesome there.
Good place to hike
Nice view to the ocean. Its just fun walking there because there is not real path. You just have to explore it by yourself.
Easy hike before the sunset
Looking forward to bringing my kids. Once you get to the sign for the hike head to the right of it to go towards the rock trail.
Fun, short and easy hike
Great hiking & views. Beautiful rock formations
If youre into graffiti covered rocks, trash everywhere, and dirtbag ravers, then this is the place for you. I swear, Los Padres Forest Service needs to install a locked gate down the road in an attempt to keep the human garbage out. This is why I go backpacking deep into the wilderness; to get away from terrible people. End rant.
Short trail with lots of great boulders to explore. Amazing spot for kid hikes.
Always beautiful. Perfect place for a dog walk in solitude especially during the rains.
Awesome place to climb! Beautiful views! Must climbing when cool out or kinda hard to climb. Other then that beautiful location!
Fun place to explore.
One of the most beautiful hikes you can make around Santa Barbara. You can drive almost completely up there and enjoy walking around amazing rock formations
I really enjoyed lizards mouth because of the scenery that you get to enjoy once you get to the top. I do wish it was more of a hike than a drive to the top of the mountain but overall its a fun little thing to go do :)
Great time first time hiking with my baby
Great view. Nice climbing opportunities.
Absolutely loved going there for sunset!! There is so many places where you can sit and hang out while enjoying the amazing view. We brought a picnic and just watch the sun go down. There are many paths you can take to get to the rock. You can venture around and boulder hop.
Best views of Santa Barbara county with lots of big boulders for climbing on and cool caves.
Its a really nice for hiking
Best place ever
Nice sandstone bouldering. Tough stuff; lots of slope-y holds and delicate too outs.
I happened to find a 2nd Lizards Mouth.
Loved being here with my family hiking the views were beautiful and the hike is easy I would definitely recommend this for a day outside
The trail is not well marked, But if you keep to the right from the trail head you will find it. The trail is mostly scrambling over boulders, but not very difficult. The view was amazing. And Lizards Mouth Rock was cool. The return trail was much easier to find.
Really simple hike, anyone can do it and its a great view of Santa Barbara.
Nice short hike to a rewarding location and view. Be careful if bringing children though.
Great outdoor climbing and fun to hike in. Gets really hot though. The bouldering there is definitely fun
Awesome place to explore and great views!
Quick drive, and short walk to the best view in SB! From the road, follow the flat rock and black arrows on the ground to Lizards Mouth!
Fun for all ages, there are gorgeous views all around. Its a wonderful place to explore where you can have a gentle hike to lizard mouth rock, or you can spend half a day finding routes through the chaparral to other large rock outcroppings. One of my favorite places in the local mountains
Very cool build your own adventure type hiking spot. Fun rock climbing for the adventurous but good walking paths for those just looking to enjoy the view. And man the view is phenomenal.
I love it but remember it get really Hot here so make sure to bring water
Great place to watch sunrises and sunsets
Amazing place to go hiking. Beautiful views of isla vista, Goleta and the ocean. The rock formations are a lot of fun to explore and climb around. Bring good shoes and be careful. Not very hard hike/climb maybe a mile or less.
This place is magical. We used to have keggers here in highschool..
Fun
Worth the hike. Gorgeous views.
Fun hike and it would be something easy for anyone to do .
Great spot to explore! Great views! And great place to camp.
Great place to klhike with the Family!!!
Its good, too popular. Even though youre in the middle of no where, everyone is there. Hiking here is fun, if you try, you will be like everyone else. But its still beautiful for sunsets, just busy.
Awesome hike with great views
Great views. Especially for sunsets when sky is clear...
Its a perfect easy hike during day or night
Because you immediately realize youre on top of the world. This place is absolutely my favorite magical getaway from my own city
Nick Markowitzs body was found near here.
Beautiful view of ocean. My camera just kinda stinks
Amazing views of the Santa Barbara and Goleta coastline, great views of the Channel Islands on a clear day. There are lots of trails unmarked paths and ways around the rocks and boulders. Well worth visiting.
Amazing place so high
Great place
Gorgeous view of Santa Bárbara
Great easy hike. Great for kids and dogs too!
Very beautiful view and easy hike
Beautiful view and fun climbing on boulders. Not much of a path.
Needs more directions but great view
Easy hiking but the view is amazing and I highly recommend it at least once!!
Short easy hike with spots for bouldering
Best place to see the sunset! Beautiful views
Great fun to hike, rock hop, views of the ocean
I went here with a group of friends and had a lot of fun! We originally went to geocache but there was no GPS signal way up there. Didnt matter! There was so much to look at and the scenery was just amazing with great views, cave painting, and nice shade spots.
Beautiful view to Santa Barbara. Watch out for rattle snakes. We saw one. She was crawling on a rock crossing our path.
Top of the world
Very nice view and easy to acces! Bring a sweather, the wind is pretty intense at the top.
Beautiful 360 views of the ocean and mountains!
Great short hike with amazing views! Lots to explore and rocks to climb
Had a great time climbing around the rocks and finding lizards. If youre one of the people who made campfires and smashed beer bottles on the rocks, kindly step off the nearest cliff.
This place is so tranquil
