A great date idea for big laughs and entertainment. Its low budget but not without its charm. Every play and musical has a comedic element that has you falling out of your seat. We saw Rocky Horror and Scrooge in Rouge and thought that both casts were amazingly talented! This theatre has a warm place in my heart!
Support local theater! We were able to go see Tommy with friends yesterday evening. The casting was great. Very animated actors, great talent, excellent live musicians. The tech effects were well done and added to the plot. We met the owner, Bill, who was very cool.It might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the plot for Tommy before going as some parts of the plot are intense. However, they were handled delicately and sensitively. I would not advise taking young children to this show, but they do have more family friendly shows available at other times of the year.Street parking is hard to come by, so plan ahead and arrive early. There is a lot at the back of the theater as well. There isnt much storefront visibility from Newport, so keep in the look out. (see my photos below)The theater was clean, offered concessions, had bathrooms to the side, inside the theater, which I thought was kind of strange until someone explained to me that it used to be a club. Long enough intermission to accommodate bathroom breaks. The seating was a little tight, but that means more people can attend, so not too bad. There is a comfortable looking lounge bench to the right when looking at the seating area. Because its a small, intimate setting (only front rows are reserved from what we could tell), arrive early for your best pick at seating.
I saw Sweeney Todd last night. The performance was excellent! The actors/production used the space of the theater very well. I feel honored to have seen and heard such talent from the actors and musicians in this intimate setting. We sat at the second row table seats. It was like a private show. I will definately be attending other shows!!!
A wonderful neighborhood gem! Highly recommend!
Went to pageant last night. First time at the playhouse and experience was an absolute joy. This was not amateur hour but absolute quality and professionalism from the actors, musicians and support staff. One of the best theatre experiences ever.
Saw the 3 pm showing of Elf Jr on Saturday, Dec 3rd, 2016. Very heartwarming and fun. Nice little venue they have! They do a great job here.
I love working at this intimate playhouse in San Diego. Putting on the highest quality shows in such an intimate space is a dream come true. Save $6 using coupon code castoff
Only downgraded from five stars because they seem to not recycle bottles and cans, (is it not City law for businesses?), the two kind of small bathrooms are ok but unisex (you poor women!) - not much they can do about that - and their fridge with drinks for sale had beer displayed but a sign saying No alcohol sales - (strange..maybe for the cast members only lol). Just saw, Reefer Madness! They only rehearsed 1mo! 5of5stars! Well done! Great singing and very funny. Kudos. (Had an intermission.) Edit: by the way, it did not sound like anybody on stage had their microphone working! ((Edit2: Shaun on their staff wrote me. Bins are available but the venue will be sure in the future to pair recycle bins with each of their trash bins. Yeay! They do recycle. Mics are being rechecked. If you donate to the venue then alcohol is available to you.))
Small Musical Theatre Venue:Production level for such a small venue was actually quite high. We went to see Avenue Q (which is a great musical btw) and all of us left extolling the experience. One caveat, the chairs are uniformly painful on the olbooty. In the hierarchy of small musical theatre venues it is below Cignet but above, ummmm ... oh Ive got it. Better than the Lyceum theatre in Horton Plaza.
Love the small venue, easy to see and hear.
Awesome theatre in OB!
