An interesting play about the relationship between a Boomer father and his transgendered son. The son is in a relationship with his editor; the father lives with the woman that broke up his marriage. The relationships develop as the father learns to accept the son. Wonderful dialog and excellent acting.

Love this mighty little theater! The community supports their work and the neighborhood supports their home in University Heights. Great work produced at this theater and theres no excuse to attend with their very reasonable prices. Just go.

A very uncomfortable theare. The seats are tiny and all jammed together, the theatre is on two unconnected floors. Do not go if you are more than a size 8. A Kind of Weather is an interesting play, but the supporting cast was uneven.

Ive been to two shows in the last few months: Hedwig and Significant Other. Both casts were fabulously talented and the intimate venue means every seat is excellent. If youre on the fence about going to a show,. Just buy the darn tickets. You will not regret it.

Havent seen a bad show yet, and have seen a couple that have amazed. A little heavy on the trans themes lately, but I suppose those have been overlooked for a long time. Would like the pendulum to swing back toward GL from BTQ before too long, though.

The boyfriend and I have been coming to Diversionary for years and have always had a wonderful experience. The space is nice, two stories with the box office and lobby downstairs and the theater upstairs. Theres a bar that offers a lot to drink and snack on during the show. Its a very cozy and intimate theater, which is great because youre that much closer to the stage so obstructed views are hardly ever an issue. The choice of plays or musicals they feature is always good. Life time customer here!

Just saw a great production there: The Hour Of Great Mercy. Enjoyed it immensely. The Actors were phenomenal. So great to see that talent in a smaller theater. It was like being on stage with them and story being acted out right next to you.

Ive seen most of the productions for the last 2 seasons, and have enjoyed them all. This is a small theatre, and it consistently puts on better material, staged correctly for the theatre size, and especially considering that this is a small theatre with a smaller budget, theyre punching WAY above their weight class.I was most recently there for pre opening show of the new play, loneliest girl in the world. It was truly outstanding, and I want to go to New York to see it when it opens on Broadway.I dont normally give 5 star reviews, as then theres no room to acknowledge the exceptional. This is a deserved five star review.

I have been going to almost every performance in the past four years. The originality acting, intelligence of each performance is staggeringly high. In my opinion, as a theater, it out performs all of the rest of them! I cannot say enough about the talent coupled with comittment that the Diversionary gives to San Diego.

Really awesome community theater in University Heights. Its nice to catch a show and then hit up one of the venues around the theater itself. San Diego has some really great community actors and that should always be supported. Before you go, make sure you join the theater. You need to be a member of sorts before youll be allowed in. Tickets dont seem to include this membership, its above and beyond.

Having enjoyed theater in San Diego for years, in many different locals, I can say with confidence that Diversionary Theatre is quite the best experience one can have. The shows are fresh and of excellent quality. The theater itself is both intimate and comfortable. The raised seating allows for clear view of the stage and the sound system is perfect.I have had the most memorable experiences at Diversionary Theater. Even better than at The Globe or The San Diego Rep. The attitude of this theater is fresh and daring.Street parking doesnt hurt either, nor the selection of cafes around the venue. And the price is very reasonable.Im purchasing my season tickets now.

Review №31

I love this theater and the plays. The actors are great. Too bad I cant afford to go anymore. I dont know why they raised their prices so high. Its almost as expensive as going to the Civic Center or Old Globe. By using Goldstar Im able to see Wicked at the Civic Center in Nov. for only $45. (not great seats but its Wicked) If you buy tickets on line for the Diversionary its near $45. I liked it when it was a local community theater. I go to the Moxie now. And some of the other local theaters. Some of the actors from the Diversionary are in some of the plays at the Moxie so I really like it. The Moxie also has a great set up. No bad seats. The plays are very edgy and the actors are fantastic. So if you want to go to a good play for a lot less money go to the Moxie. But if you can afford the Diversionary the plays never are a disappointment.

Im slightly late at posting this review, but better late than never. I saw Making Porn by Ronnie Larsen without the slightest idea of what I would be seeing. First off, within about five minutes, most of the people on the stage were completely nude. Im by no means a prude, but I was somewhat shocked. In all of my play-going days Ive seen brief moments of nudity and/or partial nudity, but Ive never seen all of the actors totally nude. I got over it though within fifteen or twenty minutes. The play is very good, the dialogue is at times hilariously funny and at other times very sad. The dialogue works like a silken screen blocking out the nudity as you become involved in the characters and the play.Making Porn is neither a trite nor an offensive play. I wont spoil the story, but the play is now approaching twenty years since its opening off-Broadway. It does, therefore, have some roots in the AIDS epidemic that swept cities like San Francisco, LA and New York. I had just left San Francisco as the word began to spread of this new, gay disease. Naturally, the Christian right blamed it all on the wicked practices of homosexuals, ignoring completely that heterosexuals were also dying.Back to the review...Ronnie was by far the best actor, writer and director. Seriously, he was totally in his skin. I was also taken in by Max Wesley who played a straight guy who inadvertently becomes the Porno Star! Max did a fine job of coping with his job of boy toy and stud. I dont know how his real parents would feel seeing the show?I wont name everyone, but I will say that everyone did a great job in their respective roles. The group jerk-off scene with milk as a substitute for ejaculatory fluid, even covered me as I was sitting front row, center. By that point in the play, it felt kind of good to be a part of it all simply because of where I was sitting.Im seeing A Gay Marriage next and I plan to see as many of his plays as I can. Ronnie Larsen is not Lenny Bruce, but he does manage to get in your face because he simply doesnt hold back anything. I admire his guts and his talents. Theater is more than The Sound of Music, so dont let yourself get judgemental when you havent even seen what Larsen can do. Not all of life is sweet and proper; some of it is fun and naughty!
