Beautiful albeit slightly dated theater. Acoustics were not as good as I had hoped. Good views even from balcony and the show was actually very well produced and executed. Despite the feeling that renovations are due, it was a very pleasant experience. SD symphony and SC ballet were very great (watched the Nutcracker)!
Really great experience. The staff is very nice. Lots of good seats! Great shows. Pro Tips:.1) You may be able to save money by buying at the box office especially if you are buying a last minute ticket. Its a big theater so its not uncommon for a few weekday tickets to be open. 2) motorcycle and scooter parking is very close to the entrance. We love going here. Come and enjoy.
My husband and I saw Wicked here and it was amazing! One of the best theaters I’ve been to. Elegant architectural design from the staircase to the theater. There’s a lot of parking lots in the area. And the food? It’s on Hollywood Blvd so restaurants are a wide range of fast food to fine dining.
The seats are well placed. Wherever you are seating you can see clearly. It is rare nowadays in theaters and venues. Of course, there is no filming or photos allowed once the presentation starts. But Frozen was amazing, I think better than the movie. Excellent singers and amazing stage decors. Really first class.
Just saw Book of Mormon here. Nice venue. Plenty of leg room. Very easy to enter and exit. No center aisle, so it’s a little bit of a pain if you’re in the middle.FYI, odd seats are on the left and even on the right. Seat numbers increase from inside out. It’s clear some patrons were confused by this. The parking garage right next door is convenient, but good luck grabbing an elevator after the show. The stairs next to the elevator only go up one floor to the terrace level. Circle around counter clockwise and use the ramp and stairs on the opposite side.
Saw the Piano Guys tonight. Great show. Wonderful venue. Packed with a good San Diego audience that was energetic and appreciative. The theater was well staffed with competent and polite volunteers and employees. Restrooms were more than adequate and spotless. Everyone was helpful and we didnt see anyone not having a good time.
Definitely a great place to see a Broadway show! Came here to see Les Miserables. I really liked how they opened up the doors to the outside during intermission. Its nice to get some fresh air between both acts and get up and walk around. The staff was friendly, the seats were comfortable and the show was amazing! Will be back!
Great establishment. Took my three-year-old daughter to watch the nutcracker. Plenty of parking in the area, we have to pay for it of course is downtown, smooth check in and check out. Considering the theater business is a bad one, the management team here actually takes very good care of the facilities. It was clean, the staff was attentive, had a great time.
What an amazing evening at the performance of Evan Hansen. I cant explain how wonderful this event was for me and our family. The theater was large but felt intimate. The actors, singing and entire performance was perfect.
We love the theater! Particularly, going to the Civic Theater in America’s Finest City, San Diego. Red carpets, crystal chandeliers, wine, awesome seating, friendly staff, and the list could go on. Just recently, we had the pleasure of watching “The King and I” and “Hello Dolly”. Both, classic movie favorites. But, seeing it live, in person, just gives both musical favorites a whole new outlook. The theater line up for musicals and dramas in 2019 is amazing, and we plan on going to every single one. Take a couple of hours and go, you will not be disappointed.
Great theatre! All seats are good seats... although Mez and up can be difficult to see everything on stage. The staff is great, and drinks are reasonably priced for being what it is. Tip- even if you buy a drink st their outside vendors, you can’t bring it inside! If you’re getting a glass of wine, grab it indoors to bring to your seat!
We sat in the upper right loge. It was a great view of the stage for The Nutcracker. We could see into the pit too, which I thought was cool to see the musicians. The theater is atmosphere is very pleasing and the acoustics seemed good (from an amateurs perspective). The staff was helpful in helping us find our seat.
The presentation of the center was marvelous. The crowd was well controlled and the sections were very well organized. Elegant settings for outside waiting, concession stands looked great and up-to-date. Seats were easy to locate with staff available everywhere to assist. Perfect establishment for this event and look forward to more. JoJo Siwa was great ️
This is an awesome place to see a show. Seating is spacious and the view to the stage was all encompassing. Sound was just right to make the experience more enjoyable. Would like to see more Broadway type shows book here.
Definitely the venue for musicals and performances here in San Diego. The seats are on a good incline so you can have ample view of the stage. The decor is a bit dated, but it doesnt make much difference as far as your experience as an audience.
The musical Anastasia was exceptional! The costumes were beautiful, the set design fantastic and the talent was phenomenal! What an awesome day! The good thing about going to the Civic center on a Sunday is if you go early, you can find free parking on the street and then there are plenty of places to choose from to get a bite to eat before the show.
Out of all the restaurants my daughter and I visited on our San Diego trip this was the winner!! True it is very dark and loud. The food was a stand out! My daughter had salmon and I had Scallops! So delicious!!! Certainly worth a visit!
Amazing old theatre. Could use and update as it’s pretty dated. I would see more shows here for sure. Great sound and location
The civic theater is one of the better theaters here in Downtown San Diego. The acoustics are excellent and so is the seating area. The plays are top rate, as are the movies.
Its a fantastic broadway theater. The sound can be a bit off at times but for the most part its wonderful. It has beer, wine, sparkle water, and regular water at decent prices. Though if you sit high in the back, you can feel pretty far away from the stage.
The inside of the theater really needs an uplift. Theres no style or character, but, I like the fact that pretty much every seat in the house has a good view, from what I could tell. Hope they can get funding to make it more appealing inside!
ADA access is great here. You can swap out the ADA seats (which have arms) for armless banquet chairs from the lobby so people of all sizes can sit comfortably.
I have had season tickets for the last three years to Broadway San Diego and I love the shows. The one downside is that if you are not short and thin the seats, at least in the mezzanine, are not comfortable. My knees run out of space and I am only 58. I cannot imagine tall folks would be at all comfortable.
Beautiful theatre very easy to access handicap access is ready available from the curb. Just caught Jesus Christ Superstar amazing music and acoustics... definitely going back to see RENT.
Evan Hansen proves its possible to have crisp vocals at the Civic Theatre. The production was excellent and unlike many shows at the Civic Theatre, we could hear and understand every actor. Bravo!
Its a pretty good venue, but the sound was a little off when we went to see Bill Maher last week. I do appreciate the fact that they have brownies and beer, and I will go again. Parking at the adjacent structure is convenient, since its only $10 during a special event.
Just saw the Avett Bros concert here last week, it had been a long time since I saw a concert at the Civic Center and what a really cool venue it is. Plenty of room between the seats in front of you for walking and for standing room (as everyone stood the entire concert naturally). We were down on the floor near the stage and was terrific, the floor is sloped so that even standing it is easy to see over those standing in front of you. And lots of exits when its over, very easy to exit the building as well.
We went there for “Dear Evan” show. The theater parking is far better than I thought. There is small wait but is quick in general. The theater has small seats and can be uncomfortable for many people. We also bumped actors in a bar at gas lamp, and they were very friendly.
It was good. My seats were good. We were in section H about 5 seats from the end of the row. Im glad we didnt get end seats cause it would have been harder to see. We couldnt see when the performers were on the left back of the stage but overall we could see everything. They didnt sell alcohol which a lot of people complain about. I would suggest that you lyft downtown so you dont have to worry about parking.
Absolutely loved the performance but the seats are tiny. I do appreciate the leg room in front of the seats though! If you havent seen Shen Yun I would greatly suggest it. It was fabulous
Large beautiful theatre! Great acoustics. Friendly staff to help you get to your seat. Parking is convenient and close by but only takes cash.
The facility is nice, though dated, and the interior is pleasant and comfortable. My main gripe is the sound. It seems anemic and quieter than it should be. Perhaps Ive just been jaded by surround-sound at movie theaters, but the volume could be louder (with more bass), especially during musicals.
Decent theater awful stressful parking. Make a parking reservation and be prepared to go around the block a few times to be in the correct lane to enter parking lot. Obviously we didnt know where we were going. If youre a local maybe you will find it all more easily. Once inside, we had fun.
I can not say much about the theater itself. I had the sheer honor of being allowed to sit in the orchestra pit with my instructor and several other wonderful musicians. This is the view from the pit during Wicked!
I wish the city would update the civic theater - I attend a show atleast once a year and as I get older i notice that the theatre is too. The carpet is not as vivid as it use to be. The seats thank gawd are not squeaky but also can be updated. Future generations need to feel the magic that I felt seeing a broadway show for the first time. When Broadway was revived this theatre should have too. Please support
I attended a Citizenship Ceremony. It was great and well organized.
Wonderful venue for watching musicals that we have been doing for over three years. We, 8 of us with season tickets, sit in the mezzanine level. Hard to hear the shows at that level. Tonight there were speakers installed, but not working. WHY IS THIS DIFFICULT????? Ive been told by the staff that other complaints have been voiced, but what actions are being taken?
Just saw Weird Al Yankovic tonight here and I gotta say this venue is pretty dope. The sound quality there is amazing especially since he had an orchestra. It was pretty easy to get out of parking as well. The only real complaint that I have is that it basically cost over $40 for crackers, cheese and a soda. Not cool. Other than that, great time at a great venue
Upon 1st arriving in the parking lot one feels as if they are in NYC paying a man cash directly instead of getting a ticket from a machine. Then opting to take the stairs instead of the elevator one must step over urine or vomit a couple times. The building from the outside has a future/retro look of the 1960s, and the chandeliers inside are just as chic.Entering the venue to go see MGMT they have tables to empty pockets/purses (no real alarm detector to walk through) as they ask if you have this or that on you, but you can easily get by with anything that can be possibly harmful to a large crowd.Even buying the best tickets available, we waited over 10 minutes for an usher to finally get around to helping us get seated, only to wait for them to move a group of people out of our section. Then once we were seated, some kids next to us started cursing (I get it, Im at a public concert). But then one continually smokes cigarettes without any employee saying a word. During the middle of the set I see a guy 3 seats to my left vomiting on the floor. So as we left we had to hop over vomit, the walls seemed to be decaying and the paint chipping off. In all honesty it reminded me of old concert buildings off Broadway or Colfax in Denver, and thats nothing to brag about.Thank you MGMT for being such a nice set of performers for your audience. But as far as the Civic Theatre is concerned; either start from scratch and rebuild or just close shop and leave it as a memory of yesteryear. Not impressed!
Went to get tickets for tomorrows performance staff was very helpful. Found us the best seats available, for the best price. Ask about available discounts there are several.
A very nice venue for lots of different events. This is a very elegant, classy theater, with lot of red carpet, good accessibility, as well as comfortable and roomy seats. Parking is very easy and convenient, taking about 5 minutes to get from your car to the theaters front doors. There is a little espresso stand outside, just in front of the main entry to the theater, and coffee and snacks are usually available inside as well.
Great venue for anything musical. Nearby parking, good fun in the plaza out front, wonderful sight lines and great acoustics.
We saw California Ballets Cinderella this afternoon & loved it! My first time sitting in the Dress Circle. Perfect placement!
We have been to this theater many times, mostly for plays/musicals. I like this venue a lot. The parking is decent (expect to pay around $10 for parking) and nearby. We have been up close and in the nose bleeds and both experiences were good. My only complaint is the crazy lines for merch sales. I wish they had a better set up for that. They will search your purse when you get there. Food and drinks are for sale (small snacks).
Fantastic. Went to see Wicked. Everyone was fantastic. We arrived 10 minutes late but didnt miss much. The theatre would benefit from slightly illuminated numbers, because it was difficult to find our seats in the dark. Fun time. Will go again for sure.
It’s a nice theater, it has good acoustics but I didn’t love the layout of the seats at the top levels because you can’t see the stage very well. The drinks are very expensive, the glass of wine $15 coffee $4
Went to a Jo Koy show tonight and was laughing the whole time.Seats were decent enough and the place was ventilated so it wasnt boiling. Although the elevators to the parking garage could be improved or increased to accommodate the flow of people. Lastly, the stairs tend to smell a lot so using the elevators is usually a must to avoid the smell.I enjoyed the experience and would probably go back to another show at the Civic Theater.
First Broadway show. Watched Anastasia. Impressive performers. Amazing effects. Very good show. Theater was nice but not easy to exit out of.
Love going there for my musicals and shows.
Civic Center is the hub of San Diego. The theater there is quite nice. It attack a lot of great performances. It is an up scale venue and requires booking in advance. There is pay parking structure next to it so no worries with that. Take time to invest in a chance of a lifetime and attend a concert or something at the Civic Center.
Weve seen several shows here and had an awesome time each time. The area outside is a great place to hang around before the show
This is an awesome venue...but hated how long it took to get past security to the seats. I have been to this theater many times and this is the first time they had metal detectors outside. I loved seeing Jo Koy here this year, and other operas and shows like Wicked here in the past. I would come again to see other shows here in the future and encourage others to do so as well.
A great venue for theater and Opera. Centrally located and downtown San Diego. Its a great venue for music and sound. It can be a little pricey but everything is these days. I really enjoy attending plays here. They have a fantastic schedule for 2019. I wish I could afford to attend more. I was able to see Aladdin a few weeks ago and I plan to attend cats tomorrow. For a total theater experience you couldnt ask for better.
Saw the Touring Aladdin show and it was great! I saw it on Broadway and wasnt sure how they would recreate the magic carpet ride and make it look like its actually flying, but they did it! Gotta love that Disney magic. The whole cast was phenomenal and I had a great time.
We were in the top tier, so we rented binoculars. Well worth it!! Every usher and worker was friendly and helpful. We had a great time.
Just a sad place that needs a major remodel. Tattered carpet, squishy uncomfortable seats and super expensive drinks and food. We deserve a better experience!
Beautiful theatre. Great location to good parking structure.
Great place to see plays and musicals.
It is a nice, comfortable and well located place. The AC was on, the environment was great all the time.
Incredible shows here and an incredible venue. Even the least expensive seats feel as though youre right there in the experience
We went to see the Blue Man Group. Parking is downtown, so at a premium. However, you can find parking withing a few blocks for evening shows. Theater was clean and staff was friendly. They also had booster seats for the kiddos. My only complaint is needing a ticket for children of all ages including infants and toddlers. My son who is 2, of course wanted to sit on moms lap.
The theater is ok. I wish the seats had cup holders. This is the view from the dress circle. The set and costumes for the Anastasia show was amazing.
Great place, we went to Opera AIDA by Giuseppe Verdi, expect great acoustics, comfy seats and nice A/C. Food and beverages outside the venue. Definitely an awesome experience.
Had a lot of fun at all the different musicals and plays they do. they give out playbills for musicals so great for expanding your collection :)
I was there to watch the Daniel tiger musical. Good for kids
The hosts, food and drink selection was nice. The seats were comfortable and the whole place was very clean. We enjoyed a comedy show here but was very disappointed with the sound quality. The microphones were poppy, they made that reverb sound and where we say under the balcony did not have extra speakers shop all the sound died at the front of the balcony. We couldnt hear about 1/3 of the jokes which was very disappointing for $70 dollar tickets. A music concert here would be fine, but I would not recommend a comedy show if you are sitting under the balconies.
AWESOME BRIT FLOYD CONCERT. IT WAS INCREDIBLE AND I WOULD GO AGAIN AND AGAIN! THAT BAND COVERED PINK FLOYD SONGS SO WELL AND THE GRAPHICS WERE AMAZING,THE LIGHTING WAS AMAZING, THE SOUNDS WERE THRILLING AND YEAH...ALL OF THAT!
Good theater and a wonderfully show
Saw Hamilton and had an amazing time! If you get seats further away you can rent binoculars for five dollars. The beer is way too expensive! Eight dollars for a 12 ounce can, and thats if you get a Bud light. The staff here is very helpful and exteremely nice though.
As always a great experience. Great show!
First time to the Civic Center. Had a great time watching The Nutcracker. Awesome performance.
Went to see Jesus Christ Superstar. Excellent show and concert in one. Easy parking. A pleasure and would go again.
Been there twice. The events that my wife and I saw were the greatest shows ever.
This is my third year of season tickets for Broadway SD and going to the Civic Theatre for the shows is always a pleasure. Ive also taken my son to a few concerts there and always had a great experience.
Nice staff. Great stage and convenient location for bar, concession stands and restrooms.
Awesome place to go to if you need groceries gets remember to have patience
Modernly styled music and theatre stage. Next door parking facility. Good views even from our perch along the far right wall. We saw Book of Mormon and laughed our butts off. Nice that youre in downtown SD near the Gaslamp District for after / before show dinner, drinks, and hotels.
Enjoy the theatre. Friendly staff, comfortable seats
LOVE PERFORMING ARTS. The beauty of dancers and actors is MAGICAL to me. I ordered Pita/ veggies with hummus dip. With a Superstar cocktail.
Just be careful of all the upselling, the sneakiest one was, do you want your coffee iced or hot? I went with iced which did not occur to me would be extra $$ a cool $6 compared to regular hot $3 with all the suggested add on I avoided this one by far was the sneakiest. Otherwise good service and yummy food.
An awesome venue for performances. I just wish they could get the aggressive homeless folks away from the streets leading to the Civic Center
Beautiful theater and friendly service. Incredible show options. Good lighting and sound systems. A wonderful evening out experience! Fun!
Overall, this is the most satisfying production of Bizets Carmen the San Diego Opera has presented in the last 25 years. It vividly brought the story to life. All four of the main female singers had very strong voices, and the mezzo-soprano who performed the role of Carmen was a superb actress as well. The male singers also performed well, if not with quite as much distinction as the women. See this opera before the run ends.
Loved it!!! Been there 3 times and will definitely return.
Love it here. They have really great shows. Tip: If you can, Uber here and back. It is so much easier and takes much less time than finding parking and/or getting out of the garage.
Helpful employees. Clean, great ambiance. Sound was a little off for the Eddie Izzard show, dont know if that is the Theatres staff or Eddies people. Had a great experience, hopefully you host another favorite performer soon.
One of the best theaters in the San Diego area. Good location, ample parking in area, good variety of productions.
Elegant theater with very good acoustics.
